Bayelsa United urged to up their games

The management of Bayelsa United have warned players to raise their games if the club is to achieve its set goals this season.

The Restoration Boys have managed to garner a point out of possible nine in three games played this season.  The team’s only point was against Lobi Stars at home.

The coach Solomon Ogbeide-tutored side also lost state Federation cup final to city rivals, Nembe City.

The team’s media officer, Edi Ohis told SportingLife that the club is not happy with the team’s performance and had handed a last warning to the players to be determined and focused.

Ohis informed further that the club have kept the players busy with series of friendly matches with local clubs in the state to keep them fit for the next home game against FC Taraba.

“We are doing everything within our reach to see that the club meet its set target this season. We believe that the club will bounce back. What they need to do now is to up their games. We have arranged some  friendly games for them during the break to keep them busy ahead of the week 4 league game against FC Taraba.

“We drew our first home game against Lobi Stars and we don’t want the repeat of that again. We want to win all our home games and also pick points away too that is what I think will propel our aspiration this season,” Ohis told SportingLife.

Maikaba wants gradual reduction of players

Wikki Tourists head coach, Abdu Maikaba has revealed to SportingLife that he doesn’t oppose the plan downsize of the players of the club but that it must be progressively done so that it doesn’t hamper the club’s chances in the league this season.

The Chairman of the Bauchi based club, suleiman Chindo recently told sports writers that the team would be culled down to 25 as against the present 35 but Maikaba argued that the decision may be premature if not done with the future interest of the team in mind.

He said it made be possible to observe the chop by mid season when some matches would have been decided noting that if such is done now it would derail the club’s chances of getting a continental ticket at the end of the season.

Nonetheless he also added that the players and technical officials of the team who have proceeded on a break because of the 2015 March 28 general elections are expected back in Bauchi on Wednesday in readiness for the Match Day Four where they will be away to Abia Warriors.

Amuneke blames players for CAF U-17 shame • Says God ‘willed our defeat’

Coach of the Nigeria U-17 Eaglets, Emmanuel Amuneke  says his team’s dismal performance in the third place play-off against Guinea on Sunday, was entirely his players’ fault and it was God’s will for the team to miss out of a podium spot.

Amuneke, who was a member of the Golden Eaglets’ coaching crew at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, was commissioned by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF to lead Nigeria’s title defence in the 2015 World Cup in Chile.

Although the team had already booked a World Cup ticket after it went top of its group and qualified for the semi-final, prompting the coach to suggest that the World Cup qualification was the primary target, Amuneke said it was God’s will that Nigeria missed out on a title in Niger.

“We have qualified to Chile, but I understand our standards and how much Nigerians want titles. We’ve dominated on the continent in the past and it’s understandable if the fans demand more titles.

“At this stage most of the countries are growing, it’s a developmental stage and Nigeria has been doing same to ensure players grow. We played a draw in the group stage but they were better than us in the third place meeting, Though we took the lead in the game our players lost focus and conceded cheap goals.

“Against South Africa, we had several chances coming off the bar and at that point we knew it was just ill luck and it wasn’t God’s will for us to win the tournament,” Amuneke offered.

U-23 national team coach Samson Siasia will hit Abuja tomorrow from his base in the United States where he celebrated the Yuletide with his family.

Siasia, who confirmed his return to Abuja tomorrow from the United States, also told NationsSport that he was elated with the excitement of some Nigerian players  in the United States to play for the Dream Team VI.

He said: “I hope to be back to Abuja on Tuesday unfailingly by the special grace of God. We are starting the crucial phase of our preparations for the African qualifiers for the All African Games against Gabon and next month is just around the corner.

“I have been keeping in touch with my players and the foreign based ones. I can also tell you that there are many players here in the (United) States that have called and even met me to signify their interest in playing for the nation, which to me is a welcome development.

“They have shown real interest in playing for the team and they are very eager too. But we will find a way around it to see if they can join us when we finally settle for a playing tour.” Siasia spoke yesterday to NationSport from the United States.

  • Crown FC suspend five players

    Crown FC suspend five players

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) outfit, Crown FC, have suspended five of their playing personnel indefinitely following their implosion in Wednesday’s match at Warri Wolves, supersport.com can report.

Crown FC suffered a disappointing and heavy 1-7 loss to title-chasing Wolves, which has put the club’s chances of survival in dire straits.

Following that humiliating defeat in mid-week, the club suspended their captain, Ayo Segun as well as the goalkeeper on the match day, Ayobami Ojo. Three outfield players, Benson Omodukwu, Mende Daniel and former Nigeria under-17 defender, Aigbe Oliha.

The players were, however, not handed letters of suspension but learned of their punishment from the club’s information board in their Ogbomoso camp.

A backroom staff of the club hinted supersport.com that the players were suspended on allegations of throwing the game against Warri Wolves leading to the team’s implosion.

“The management of our team has suspended five of our players. Our captain, Ayo Segun is one of those suspended. Benson Omodukwu, Mende Daniel, Aigbe Oliha and goalkeeper Ayobami Ojo are also suspended. The management put up the information on the notice board in our camp on Thursday. From what we were told, they (the management) say they believe these players sold out in the game and allowed Warri Wolves to win the match by 7-1 against us.

“It is quite unfortunate because what happened before that game was something that will put the conditioning of any player under test. We were made to trek for several minutes to the stadium due to the traffic jam in Warri since a political gathering was going on that day. We got to the stadium just 20 minutes before kick-off and the referee was magnanimous enough to give us five minutes extra to warm up before the match.

“Apart from that, how do you motivate players who are owed up to five months salaries as a coach to give their best? Surely they will be distracted by such because they don’t know when the next pay day will come,” the Crown FC backroom staff told supersport.com.

Crown FC occupy the 19th position in the NPFL standings with 36 points and will play host to one of the new boys in the premier division, Abia Warriors, this Sunday.

AFCON QUALIFIERS: NFF denies inviting 66 players

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied reports in the Nigerian media about the invitation of 66 players by new Super Eagles coach Amodu Shuaibu for AFCON 2015 qualifying games.

The body denied the reports through the Super Eagles of Nigeria Twitter handle, but confirmed to SL10 the listing of a pool of players from which Amodu Shaibu is expected to pick players.

“Coach Shaibu has not invited 66 players for 2015 AFCON qualifiers in November. NFF tech department only gave him a pool of players as guide,” reads a tweet from the handle.

“It is the normal procedure for NFF tech department to give such guidance for any new technical crew for all national teams.”

The coach is, however, at liberty to pick any player out of that pool he/she feels has something special to offer his/her team.

Furthermore the statement confirmed that the Super Eagles will play a friendly match with a yet-to-be-known team in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State to formally open the Akwa Ibom Stadium where they will play South Africa in their last group game of the AFCON 2015 qualifiers.

  • OCTOBER 2014 FIFA RANKINGS: Nigeria drop five places

OCTOBER 2014 FIFA RANKINGS: Nigeria drop five places

•Now 42nd in the world; 9th in Africa

Nigeria have dropped five places from their  previous 37th position, and are now placed 42 on the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday.

The Super Eagles’ uninspiring displays have seen the team plummet to number nine in Africa below countries like Cape Verde and Senegal.

The Les Fennecs of Algeria, who have won four out of their four AFCON 2015 qualifiers, are the number one team in Africa with 989 points and 15th on the world ranking ahead of England.

Nigeria are behind several countries, including Ivory Coast who are second, Tunisia, Ghana, Cameroun and Cape Verde. Egypt and Senegal make up the remaining African top ten spots.

Evidently, the goalless draw in South Africa and the 1-0 loss to Sudan didn’t do the Eagles any good in the latest rankings.

World Cup winners Germany still maintain the number one spot in the world. Argentina and Colombia are in second and third respectively while Brazil, who hosted the FIFAWorld Cup lie in sixth place on the world rankings.
