    Plumptre, Ordega battle for Saudi Women’s League’s monthly award

    Super Falcons’ duo of Ashleigh Plumptre and Francisca Ordega are in the race to become the Saudi Women’s Premier League Player of the Month for March after their nominations following a series of standout performances for Al Ittihad Ladies.

    During the period under review, Al Ittihad secured two wins and suffered one narrow defeat in three matches, scoring an impressive 13 goals and conceding just twice. They cruised to a 3-0 victory over Al-Amal, endured a hard-fought 2-1 loss to league leaders Al-Nassr, who extended their unbeaten run to 16 games, and bounced back in emphatic style with a 9-0 demolition of Al-Taraji.

    These results lifted Al Ittihad to seventh on the league table with just two games left in the season.

    Plumptre was outstanding at the back, while also making key contributions going forward. She scored the third goal in the win over Al-Amal, and was instrumental in the 9-0 rout of Al-Taraji, opening the scoring and providing three assists in a commanding display.

    Ordega also impressed with her dynamic play and attacking presence throughout the month, reinforcing her value to the team’s resurgent form.

    The Nigerian pair will battle for the award against Al-Ahli’s Naomie Kabakaba, who was equally sensational, netting five goals in three games. Her contributions helped push Al-Ahli to second place in the standings with 37 points.

    Falcons’ Plumptre laments missing Olympics

    Super Falcons defender, Ashleigh Plumptre has expressed her frustration at her inability to make the Paris 2024 Olympic Games cut with the Nigeria’s team. 

    Plumptre who was sure to make the team was ruled out of the competition due to an injury she sustained while on club duty with Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia and the Nigerian stated her disappointment at the circumstances behind her omission.

    Earlier this week, head coach Randy Waldrum named his squad for the Paris 2024 Olympics event where Nigeria will return to the Women’s football tournament after 16 years wait with Rasheedat Ajibade, Oshoala, and Nnadozie among the selected players.

    While admitting that the timing wasn’t perfect for her regarding her recovery from the injury she however wished the team well in Paris and she confirmed that she would stay glued to her television set rooting for Nigeria.

    “Timings haven’t aligned to be in contention for the Olympic roster – a dream I’ve held since I can remember,” Plumptre wrote on her X account. “Since having my surgery, I’ve worked in every area of my life to be in the best position to recover, but one thing I’ve learnt is how to listen to my body.

    “While on a personal note, it’s a shame to miss out, I cannot put into words my excitement and pride in knowing I’ll be watching my Super Falcons girls representing this flag on the Olympic stage.”

    Plumptre excited joining Saudi Women’s Premier League

    Nigeria defender Ashleigh Plumptre has said her desire for adventure beyond football was the reason she decided to move to Saudi Arabia Premier League.

    The former Leicester City star  who played all four Nigeria matches at the Women’s World Cup, is one of the Saudi Women’s Premier League’s most high-profile signings.

    The 25-year-old joins the Saudi Women’s Premier League team following three years with WSL side Leicester City.

    Plumptre posted on X (formerly Twitter) that she was “grateful to have signed for Al-Ittihad.” She added: “I am excited to start this journey alongside some incredible human beings. My journey of stepping into more of myself continues … It’s more than football.”

    Plumptre has been recruited by the former technical director of Championship side Lewes, Kelly Lindsey, who is now head manager of the Saudi Arabian side. Lindsey is a former US international who has previously been head coach of the Afghanistan women’s national team and Morocco women’s national team.

    Plumptre impressed for Nigeria at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, with the African side narrowly missing out on a place in the quarter-finals, losing to England on penalties after the game was goalless after 120 minutes.

    The defender represented England at Under-15, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-23 levels but chose to represent Nigeria at senior level, whom she qualifies to play for through her paternal grandfather.

    Plumptre followed Venezuela’s Oriana Altuve, fellow Nigerian Rita Chikwelu and Sweden’s Nor Mustafa into the league for its second season.
