    Police arrest suspected robbers in Jigawa

    The Police Command in Jigawa on Wednesday said it had arrested four suspected armed robbers in Dutse Local Government Area of the state.

    The command’s Spokesman, SP Abdu Jinjiri, said in Dutse that the suspects were arrested in Nerawa village at about 3:30 a.m.

    Jinjiri said the suspects, aged between 22 and 30, were arrested by a joint team of police and a vigilance group operating in the area.

    He said the suspects allegedly attacked and robbed one Alhaji Umar Maiwake at his residence in Kudai village at about 3 a.m.

    “The three suspects were arrested over alleged criminal conspiracy, trespass, causing grievous hurt and armed robbery.

    “The incident was reported at about 3:30 a.m. by one of the residents of the area that a group of 11 armed robbers stormed the residence of the victim at about 3 a.m. and robbed him of two mobile phones, unspecified amount of money and inflicted injuries on him.

    “Footsteps followed by joint patrol team between police and vigilante to Nerawa village led to the arrest of the four of the suspects,” Jinjiri said.

    He said one cow and two motorcycles ( Bajaj ) suspected to have been stolen were recovered from the suspects during the arrest.

    The spokesman added that the victim was rushed to Federal University Dutse ( FUD ) Teaching Hospital, Dutse, for medical attention.

    He said investigation into the case had begun, after which the suspects would be charged to court.

    Police investigate explosion in Enugu market

    The Police Command in Enugu State has commenced investigation into an alleged heavy explosion that occurred in the former New Artisan Market on the outskirts of Enugu.

    The command’s Spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed this in a statement Tuesday  in Enugu.

    Amaraizu said the explosion took place at the former New Artisan Market, along Enugu-Port Harcourt Road on Monday night.

    He said the command had dispatched its crack team of investigators, mainly from its Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD), to the scene of the incident.

    Amaraizu said the EOD team was currently combing the entire area and its environs in order to ensure that it was safe and secure for all.

    He, however, said that no life was lost in the incident. “The command through its operatives has commenced full scale investigation into the alleged incident of explosion at the scrap site of the former New Artisan Market in Enugu.

    “The cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained and no life was lost. “However, the incident is alleged to have caused minor destruction in a nearby food shop, including two vehicles parked near the said shop,’’ he said.

    He advised residents of the state and travelers along the road not to panic as “the command is on ground and on top of the situation to unravel the causes of the incident’’.

    “The command is advising the good people of the state, particularly residents of that axis not to entertain fear or panic, but to go about their normal lawful businesses.

    “All hands are on deck, the command is working in partnership with relevant sister security agencies and stakeholders to ensure a safe and secure Enugu and its environs,’’ he said.

    Abia police smash kidnap syndicate

    The Abia State police command has smashed three kidnap gangs. The success resulted from quickly following up on tip-offs from members of the public.

    According to the police, two of the suspects, who were among 30 paraded, were nabbed in a hotel room as they were sharing the ransom paid by a victim’s family on July 27.

    A military rifle and loads of ammunition used by another fleeing kidnapper were recovered after officers were led to a hospital where a suspect had died while being treated of bullet wounds he sustained during gun battle with the police. After the gun duel, a kidnap victim identified as Onyemaechi Mbamaonyeukwu Ijeoma was rescued.

    Three members of a gang had earlier been killed on July 18 at Osisioma Ngwa, where they had abducted the Managing Director of Mba Hotels, Aba, and held him hostage at an uncompleted building in Umuajuju Ovungwu, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area while negotiating for ransom.

    Abia State Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Adeleye Oyebade attributed the increasing success story of his men to the growing support from members of the public.

    He said: “Operatives attached to the Command’s Dragon Squad in Aba, while acting on a tip off, arrested two men, Samuel Akoma and Kenneth Ananaba in a hotel room in Aba where the hoodlums lodged after collecting ransom to release their hostage. Two vehicles including that of the released hostage were recovered.”

    A victim identified as Ijeoma Okereke was also rescued by the police from another gang of kidnappers at 1:00 p.m. on July 22.

    Oyebade said: “The victim was rescued when PMF 55 men on nipping point duty, at Owerrinta acting on a tip-off, intercepted a 14-seater Mitsubishi L300 bus with registration number SB 639 WER painted white and green. They arrested the duo of Chinemere Amamba aged 39 and Nnamdi Monday, both from Nmelele Isiala Ngwa South.”

    The victim identified as a student at Imo State University (IMSU) was abducted at 12 noon along Emekuku Junction, on Douglas Road Owerri.

    On the suspected kidnapper found dead at a hospital, Oyebade said: “The deceased suspect identified as Charles Ndubuisi Nwaichi of Eziudo, Ezinihitte Mbaise in Imo State was, on information, traced to Abia State Teaching Hospital in Aba where he was taken to by his brother, one Obioma Monday Nwaichi for treatment. He eventually gave up the ghost on July 22. Prior to this development, one Military-type AK 47 rifle with bayonet, double magazine and 10 rounds of live ammunition were recovered on July 24, during further combing of a bush in search of wounded suspects.”

    Other suspects at the parade included burglars, cultists, motorcycle snatchers and members of various robbery gangs.

    Oyebade said, “There was a robbery incident at Akwette in which a motorcyclist was shot by one of his Fulani passengers as he resisted attempt to snatch the motorcycle from him on June 20. The next day, one of the suspects was arrested following the combined efforts of the police and vigilance group in the area and one locally-made gun recovered.

    “During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime. He said the gun belonged to his cohort, one Suleiman, who had used it to shoot the victim. Following the lead from the first suspect, Adamu Abubakar, the said Suleiman Muhammed from Zamfara State was arrested on July 14 at DE-DORIS Hotel, Omuma Igurita in Rivers State by operatives attached to Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) Obehie. The suspect has also confessed to the crime and both will be arraigned in court soon.”

    It was gathered that two suspects identified as Ugochukwu Ugwumba, 22, and Goodnews Uwem, 18 were arrested after their gang allegedly snatched a N500, 000 handset, at gunpoint, from a lady who was receiving a call on the road.

    Two others named as Onyekaozuru Emenike and Chibuzo Okoroafor were identified as members of a four-man gang that used machetes and daggers to snatch cash and GSM phones from three victims.

    The police also revealed how a brave passenger had assisted them in smashing a gang of robbers when he grabbed one of them as they were escaping after raiding a commercial bus marked ETU 66 XA. The victims were said to be travelling to Arochukwu for a traditional wedding.

    The suspect, identified as Maduabuchi Ekeleme, led detectives to a hide-out at Ubakala area in Umuahia South Local Government Area where a man identified as Bright Iroakazi, and two women, Chizoba Ede and Adaugo Onuoha were arrested at a hideout in possession of substance suspected to be Cocaine.

    The police also paraded three suspected cultists accused of killing a man simply identified as Prince.

    The suspects arrested by the Divisional Crime Officer, Isuochi, were identified as Samuel Chukwuemeka, Abdulazeez Mukaila and Obisike Ekezie, all members of ‘Red Barger’ confraternity.

    Oyebade said: “The suspects have confessed to the crime; search was conducted in their houses during which the following items were recovered: three red caps, four bangles, two daggers, one Samsung TV with its remote.”

    Firm donates six vans to Anambra police, FRSC

    The Anambra State police command and the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in the state have taken delivery of six patrol vans donated to them by Anheuser-Bush InBev (AB-INBEV).

    The keys to the L-200 Mitsubishi vehicles were handed over to the state police commissioner, Mr. Garba Baba Umar and the state sector commander of the FRSC, Mr. Sunday Ajayi by the group’s managing director in Nigeria and Ghana, Mr. Andries du Plessis.

    The pick-up patrol vehicles, according to AB-InBev, are powered by Mitsubishi’s 4N15 turbocharged and intercooled diesel engines. Also, The Nation gathered that the vehicles detect moisture on the windscreen and activate the wipers automatically.

    Plessis noted that the donation of vehicles was in keeping with AB InBev’s commitment to creating a better world.

    The Legal and Corporate Affairs Director for AB InBev, Nigeria and Ghana, Otunba Michael Daramola said that a responsible organisation will always strive to create a better world in line with its corporate belief.

    He said that their better world policy was hinged on a growing, cleaner and healthier world.

    He said, “This principle has guided us as a company in deciding how to be an active participant in our immediate community, as this policy has seen us meaningfully engage the young people so they would grow and stay out of crime, while growing the economy.”

    Speaking with The Nation, the FRSC sector commander, Mr. Sunday Ajayi, said the donation would help his command in carrying out their duties such as preventing and minimising accidents on the highways.

    Umar, while receiving the vehicles, commended AB InBev for its kind gesture, recognising that the policing community is important and needs help. He said that the command would maintain its collaborative efforts with corporate bodies, government, and citizens just like the company had displayed, as he put it.

    Umar further said that the vehicles would go a long way in ensuring that the communities were safe, especially as Anambra governorship election approaches.

    He lamented that funding had always been a major setback to the police, while enjoining the private sector to always partner with the government so as to have a safe community.

    NMA commends Police in Ondo

    The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ondo State Chapter has commended the Police Command in the state for its swift response in recovering member’s vehicle snatched by armed robbers.

    Dr Gbelega Dolani, Chairman of NMA in the state, who made commendation at a news conference on Tuesday in Akure, said the gallant performance of the police was worthy of commendation.

    Dolani said a Honda Accord car belonging to one of its members was snatched on April 30 at gun point in Oba- Ile area of Akure at 3.30p.m but the police recovered it hours after they were alerted.

    Dolani advised residents to always report crime, promptly, to the police to enable them do their jobs effectively and reduce crime to the barest minimum.

    “To us, doctors, this swift and gallant effort displayed by the police is worthy of commendation.

    ‘’We sincerely appreciate this effort of Ondo State Police Command, especially the Commissioner of Police, Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison.

    “From this incident, it shows that with appropriate and timely information, plus adequate security gadget, the Nigeria Police has the capacity to show excellence,” he said.

  • Enugu: Police warn masquerades against recklessness

    The Police Command in Enugu State has warned masquerades and their assistants against assault, molestation and intimidation of Nigerians in the state under whatever guise.

    The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, gave the warning in a statement in Enugu on Monday.

    Amaraizu said that the police would arrest anyone caught committing any offence under the guise of masquerade shows.

    He said that the command had continued to say that people’s rights should not be infringed upon in any show or festivity.

    He advised communities to celebrate their culture and masquerade festivities within the confines of the law.

    “The Police have frowned at the report received concerning the alleged recklessness of some masquerades and their assistants on the issue of assault, molestation and intimidation of good people of the state.

    “Anyone caught committing offence or wrecking havoc on members of the public under the guise of masquerade festivities will be promptly arrested and prosecuted,’’ he said.

    In a related development, the command through its operatives in Nsukka Police Divisional Headquarters has nabbed one of the assistants of Oriokpa Masquerade, Nnamdi Okoro, in Nsukka on March 26.

    Okoro was alleged to have assaulted Mr Ezeugwu Lawrence, which caused him injury on his head at Ugwuoye axis of Nsukka.

    “Okoro is now helping police operatives in their investigation.

    “He will be arraigned properly in court after investigation,’’ the police spokesman said.

  • 4 policemen die in fatal accident

    Four policemen attached to the `A’ team of the Police X Squad at the Lagos State Police Command  died on Sunday from a fatal accident while on surveillance and patrol duty.

    The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the command, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said the accident occurred on along Isiwu Road in Imota, near Ikorodu in Lagos State, at about 1p.m., in a statement.

    “At about 1p.m.on Sunday, a police truck with Registeration No. NPF 409 D with five policemen on board was involved in ahead-on collision with a 911 tipper lorry with no Registration number.

    “The driver of the Nissan frontier 911-van who could not be identified fled the scene.

    “It was disclosed that both vehicles were coming from opposite directions and had a head-on collision at a point near Isiwu.

    “Three policemen died on the spot.

    “An ASP and an inspector who sustained serious injuries were rushed to LASUTH, Ikeja, where one of them was later confirmed dead.

    “The fifth officer is currently on admission,’’ he said.

    Famous-Cole said that the corpses of the deceased had been deposited at the General Hospital, Ikorodu where they would be taken to LASUTH, Ikeja, for autopsy.

    He said that both vehicles involved in the accident had been towed to the Ikorodu Police Division as investigation was ongoing

    “As the Lagos State Police Command mourns the death of some of its finest officers who died in active duty, the command will not leave any stone unturned to bring justice to the lost souls,” Famous–Cole said.

    He also urged the general public to come forward with any useful information that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of the fleeing suspect.

    He advised Lagosians to be very cautious and alert while driving on the road. (NAN)

    A Kaduna based businessman, Mallam Abubakar Adamu and his wife Fatima Abubakar have been arrested by the operatives of Kaduna State Police Command for stealing two kids Nasirudeen Mahmoud (5 years) and Zainab Sultana Umar (5 years)

    The Police Public Relation Officer, Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Aliyu Usman disclosed this while parading the suspects in Kaduna Monday.

    The Police Spokeperson further said Mallam Abubakar a resident of Ungwuwan Shekara, Malali District of Kaduna North Local Government Area, during investigation informed the police that the first kid Nasirudeen Mahmoud (m) whom he rechristened ‘Ibrahim’ was taken by him along Liberia road, Malali, while Zainab Sultana Umar (f) was taken on her way back from Islamic school a month ago along Jajere road, Badikko, Kaduna South Local Government Area.

    The suspect was also said to have obtained International Passports and Birth Certificates for the two kids because he intended to travel with them to Saudi Arabia before he was nabbed by the police

    He added that contrary to speculations he did not have the intention to sell them off to the highest bidder.

    “My wife, Fatima Abubakar who is an Igbo woman has been childless since our marriage; and whenever I see children, I get attracted to them especially when they’re beautiful and intelligent. I have already spent more than $1,000 on them to buy toys for them and they’re all registered at a private school in Malali.

    “So, if I have intention of selling them I shouldn’t have bothered myself enrolling them into school. I want the best for them because I see them as my own children.”

    When asked why he didn’t go to the Orphanage Homes to adopt a child, Mallam Abubakar said the pressure from family and friends was too much on him, so he cannot think in the right direction.

    The wife of the suspect, Hajiya Fatima claimed she is not aware that her husband stole the kids because he told them he adopted them from an orphanage.

  • Panic as community storms police command with monarch’s corpse

    rate indigenes of Barako community in Gokana local government area yesterday took the corpse of Chief Levi Korgbara to headquarters of the Rivers Police Command to protest alleged connivance of police officers in a communal crisis that has reportedly claimed eight persons.

    Korgbara was killed by unknown gunmen on Friday on his way to honour the invitation of Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Kpor, for peace talks.

    It was learnt the monarch, who was Chairman of Council of Traditional Rulers of Barako, was invited for peace talks with others chiefs from the warring community, Nwebiara.

    Yet-to-be-identified attackers killed him on the way to the Police Divisional headquarters.

    This killing sparked tension in the area with indigenes taking his remains to the police headquarters.

    Some police officers at the command advised the protesting community to return to the divisional headquarters to obtain a police report and deposit the corpse in a mortuary.

    The officers in charge of the Police Control Room assured the community investigations into the killing and other incidents in the area would commence soonest.

    At the police headquarters, Kimanyieke Kesiop, one of the community leaders, said the community was not happy with the involvement of police in the situation.

    Kesiop, who regretted that the chief would not have been killed if he was not invited by the police, said the community had lost over eight indigenes within last week to attacks from the neighbouring community.

    When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police Nnamdi Omoni described the death as mysterious.

    Omoni said it was not possible that a police DPO would work with a community to killing people.

    He added that the police officers in Kpor were not indigenes of the area.

    According to him:  “The DPO should not be blamed for the death. No DPO will invite people for a peace talk and send gunmen to kill the person. It is unprofessional; so it is inconceivable.”

    Robbery suspects kill lecturer, one other in Gombe

    The Police Command in Gombe State has confirmed that a gang of armed robbery suspects killed a lecturer and a Cameroonian at Kashere junction on the Gombe-Kumo Road.

    This is contained in a statement issued by DSP Ahmed Usman, the command spokesman, in Gombe on Monday.

    The statement stated that the incident occurred at about 11:45p.m., on Sunday night.

    It named the lecturer as Malam Sulaiman Umar of the Department of Arabic Studies, Federal University, Kashere and the Cameroonian as Malam Zainab Mahmuda without giving further details.

    The statement stated that the suspected robbers were about eight in number, adding that investigation into the incident had commenced.
