    Police Games:  Ayienugba claims women’s  tennis gold medal

    Winners have emerged in the tennis event at the ongoing 14th  biennial Police Games tagged ‘Oluyole 2024’ at the Ibadan Recreation Club with Funke Ayienugba of Zone 2 claiming the women’s singles gold medal.

    In a one-sided match, Ayienugba defeated Dike Osinachi  of Zone 4 6-0, 6-0 to emerge champion, while in the men’s doubles final, twins Paul and Peter Alakwem of Force Headquarters defeated duo Idris and Aminci of Zone 2 6-1, 6-1 to win the gold medal.

    Also, Agnes Ogar and Charity Philips of Zone 7 defeated Adedayo and Oyelowo 6-0,6-0 to emerge champions in the women’s doubles.

    The men’s singles final scheduled for Thursday (today) has Paul Alakwem of Force Headquarters battling Eloh Timothy for the gold medal.

    In karate individual kata (female category), Rita Edejoh emerged champion, while  Zinab Absalam clinched the silver medal, with duo Hamzat Olayinka and Holiness Iyoba ending up in third and fourth positions respectively.

    Ebounde Emmanuel claimed the gold medal in the individual kata male category, while  Ebenezer Unoren emerged second. Victor Olabiwonun and Ebadtor Emmanuel came third and fourth respectively.

    Also, Zone 1 emerged champions in the team kata event, while Zone 6 clinched the silver medal with Zone 11 and Zone 7 coming third and fourth respectively.

    Karateka Ama steals show  at Police Games

    Inspector Justina Ama of  Force Headquarters was the cynosure of all eyes   yesterday   at the of the ongoing 14th  biennial Police Games tagged Oluyole 2024 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, after  she grabbed  gold and silver medals in the karate event .

    Ama won gold in the individual category and silver in the team category.

    The elated Inspector, who had represented Nigeria at the African Games in the past, said karate was a disciplined sport that helped to keep athletes psychologically, physically and emotionally fit.

    Meanwhile, the Chairperson, Nigeria Police Netball Association, CSP Ololade Babatola, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to supporting netball in the country.

    In the netball event, Zone 2 defeated Force Headquarters 5- 3, while Zone 11 lost 3-2 to Zone 17.

    Speaking with newsmen in Ibadan, Ololade said: “Netball is back and we want to showcase it to the whole world in order for people to key into it. Although it is a female game, the males are now interested in playing it.

    “With the talents that abound in the Nigeria Police, the country will benefit from it. I’m very sure this will form the bedrock of athletes that will win laurels for the country in international competitions.”

    Police Games : Over 4000 participants set for Oluyole 2024

    More than 4000 athletes are expected to participate  as  the 14th  biennial Police Games tagged ‘Oluyole 2024’ kicks  off tomorrow in Ibadan.

    The eight-day sports fiesta will be rounded off on March 2 at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan.

    According to the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, the aim of the competition was to discover talents for the country and also for the fitness of their personnel.

    The IGP who was represented by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the theme of the competition is ‘Competing for peace, unity, stability and development of Nigeria.’

    He disclosed that the IGP will lead other management team to Ibadan as Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde serves as chief host.

    “We know that the Nigeria Police force has a very good history when it comes to sports development in Nigeria. For many years we’ve been at the forefront of producing and projecting talents in all sports arenas of Nigeria and beyond this country globally, Nigeria Police force has produced a very large number of athletes, in football, wrestling and talk of any games in the whole world.

    “So, we are coming together to converge on Ibadan, the Oyo state capital to have the 14th  Biennial Police Games.

    “We know that if you are not mentally fit, you cannot discharge your duty as a police officer or as a security agent. Our intention is to make sure we come together to stage these games and to identify good talents again that will support the Nigerian government in producing good hands and good brains that will develop our sports in Nigeria.

     “Oluyole 2024 will bring together over 4000 athletes that will participate in various all recognised games across the globe except the games that we will not have facilities for in Ibadan here.

    “Participants will compete in football, basketball, boxing, mixed martial arts, swimming, lawn tennis, table tennis, badminton, and wrestling, among other sports.

    “We are doing this in preparation for our ability to attain our  … in the internal security of this country. When you are physically fit, you are good to go to do the job.”

    In her remarks, Oyo State Sports Commissioner, Wasilat Adegoke hinted that everything is set to make the sports fiesta a memorable one.

    Also, Chief Press Secretary to the Oyo State governor, Pastor Sulaimon Olanrewaju, in his remarks said the state is glad to have the IGP and other police officers and men in Oyo State for the game.

    He said the state has put in place logistics to make the programme a huge success.

    “It’s going to be an exciting eight-day event and I urge people to come out en masse and see policemen outside their primary assignment,” he said.
