    Soldier, police officer stabbed to death in Nasarawa

    A military and police officer stabbed each other to death on Sunday at Agyaragu in Obi local government area of Nasarawa State when attempting to separate a fight.

    An eye witness, Musa Shuaibu, told The NATION the deceased soldier was trying to separate a civilian and police officer on duty when the incident occurred.

    It was learnt the police man and the military officer stabbed each other to death in the process.

    According to the eyewitness, when relatives of the late soldier came and saw his body on the ground, they razed the nearby police station in Agyaragu.

    Nasarawa Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), DSP Ranham Nansel confirmed the incident to The NATION.

    According to him, the Command received an information from Agyaragu Divisional Police at around 1pm that a soldier serving in Borno State came home and a special constabulary had a fight at an Agyaragu market.

    The soldier stabbed the police special constabulary with a knife and the special constable stabbed him in return.

    According to him: “They were both rushed to the hospital but the soldier died while receiving treatment.

    “Consequently, the relatives of the soldier mobilised and came to the police station to attack the police station but the police officers on duty repeled the attack.”

    According to him, the Commissioner of Police Umar Shehu-Nadada has visited the scene of the incident adding that normalcy had since been restored.

    He said investigation into the incident has begun while manhunt was ongoing for attackers of the police station.

  • Woman arraigned for allegedly posing as police officer

    A 54-year-old woman, Olabisi Olawoye, who allegedly posed as a Police Superintendent (SP), has appeared at an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The defendant was brought before the court on a charge of impersonation. She, however, pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Inspector Kehinde Omisakin said the defendant committed the offence last August at Magistrates’ Court 1, Ogba, Lagos.

    She alleged that the defendant impersonated as a police superintendent attached to the Surveillance Section, State CID, Panti, Yaba, in a bid to defraud Chief Magistrate Yewande Aje.

    The offence, Omisakin said, contravened Section 380(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Chief Magistrate A.O. Komolafe, however, admitted the accused to N100, 000 bail with two sureties each in the like sum, with evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government for the last three years.

    She fixed June 6 for further hearing of the case.

  • Six accused of killing police officer

    Six men have been remanded in Ikoyi  Prison  by an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, following their arraignment for allegedly hacking a police officer to death.

    They will be in custody, pending  advice by Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The police charged Olamide Abayomi, 19; Ibrahim Folami, 35; Ibrahim Opeyemi, 35; Oluwatobi Olabode, 22; Boniface Ekemezie, 60 and Gafar Akintunde, 40, with conspiracy, misdemeanour and murder.

    Chief Magistrate O.O. Olatunji declined to take their plea andordered that they be remanded in custody.

    Olatunji adjourned till May 21.

    Prosecuting Inspector Oladele Adebayo alleged that the defendants committed the offence on March 20 at Mile 12, Ketu.

    He said the defendants prevented the enforcement of the environmental law by Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences Unit officials.

    Adebayo alleged that while preventing the task force from enforcing the law, the defendants caused the death of Sergeant Damilola Adeojo with F/No. 431882 by  macheting him on his head and body.

  • Court remands dismissed police officer

    A Wuse Zone 6 Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, yesterday ordered that a dismissed police officer, Ishaya Amos, be remanded in prison custody for alleged unlawful possession of 930 AK-47 ammunition.

    The Magistrate, Mr. Ahmad Ndajiwo, who gave the order, said the defendant should be remanded until March 13 for hearing of the case.

    Amos of CTU Barracks, Bukuru, Jos, is charged with unlawful possession of AK-47 ammunition, unlawful dealing in ammunition, unlawful sale of Ak-47 ammunition and joint act.

    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecutor G. N Jinalimba had told the court that on September 28, 2017, the Inspector General of Police received information that Amos, a police officer attached to CTU Base 2, Jos, illegally had in his possession 930 AK-47 ammunition.

    He was allegedly arrested with the bullets which he was going to sell to Jubrin Mamuda.

    The prosecutor said during police investigations it was discovered that the defendant had allegedly sold 750 of the ammunition to Mamuda previously.

  • Man in court for ‘assaulting’ police officer

    A 39-year-old sheriff of the Lagos State High Court, Usman Osakwe, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

    Prosecutor Peter Nwangwu alleged that Osakwe assaulted the police officer, Insp. Bolarinde Muyide, by pushing him.

    He said Osakwe committed the offence on December 17 at 10am, at 6, Oladele Street, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos.

    Osakwe is facing a three-count charge bordering on assault occasioning harm and breach of the peace before Chief Magistrate Mrs. Y.O Aje-Afunwa.

    Nwangwu alleged that the defendant pushed Insp. Muyide roughly against the wall, thereby causing him grievous harm on his left hand.

    He said the complainant, attached to Area ‘G’ Police Command headquarters, Ogba, Lagos, was assaulted by the accused while performing his duties.

    Osakwe pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Aje-Afunwa granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in the  like sum.

    She said the surety must be employed and show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Aje-Afunwa adjourned till February 14.

  • Police officer, Man, 75, killed on farm

    Ondo State Police Command has apprehended a middle-aged man for allegedly killing a 75-year-old man, Olusegun Oyadele and a police officer, who tried to arrest him.

    The Nation learnt that the suspect is a farmer popularly called “At all at all.”

    He lives in Sabo, but his farm is at Onipetesi camp.

    Sources alleged that the suspect hacked the septuagenarian to death with a cutlass last Saturday morning when he was drying cocoa seeds on his farm.

    It was gathered that there was no disagreement between the suspect and the deceased before the suspect killed him.

    The incident reportedly occurred around 6:30am and the police were informed.

    A source said: “The suspect caught the old man unawares and attacked him with a cutlass several times before he died. The suspect threatened to kill other people on the farm before he ran away into the bush.”

    Police spokesman Femi Joseph said officers and men from Enu Owa Police Station were mobilised after the case was reported by Veronica Olawale.

    He said four officers went to the camp, but in an attempt to arrest the suspect, he killed one of them and attacked four residents.

    Joseph said the command, led by Commissioner Gbenga Adeyanju, later visited the camp, but the suspect had escaped.

    He said after searching for him for over 18 hours, he was arrested with the assistance of a vigilance group about 3am yesterday.

    Joseph added: “The suspect was apprehended yesterday morning by the police with the assistance of a vigilance group.

    “He was nabbed in a forest near Tekunle village in Bolorunduro Local Government.”

    The spokesman said the body of the police officer had been deposited at the morgue, adding that the injured residents were in hospitals.

    He said the suspect would be arraigned after investigation.

  • Gunmen kill Police Sergeant in Imo 

    Unknown gunmen Tuesday killed a Police Sergeant in Owerri, the Imo state capital and made away with his AK47 Riffle.

    According to eye witness account, the slain Police Officer, Christian Nnamani, was said to be on duty with other of his colleagues at the Assumpta Catholic Church roundabout when the gunmen opened fire on them at about 9am.

    Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, a Superintendent of Police, said the assailants fled with the Riffle belonging to the victim after killing him.

    Enwerem also disclosed that a passerby was also hit by bullet from the hoodlums and was rushed to Federal Medical Center, Owerri, where he is receiving treatment.

    He stated that the Police had commenced investigation into the matter, adding that that the Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi “had given marching orders to the investigators to quickly arrest the fleeing killers”.

    According to him, “it is true; we lost a Police Sergeant last night (Tuesday). Sergeant Christian Nnamani attached to Mobile Police 18 Owerri was a -stop-and -search duty with his colleagues at Assumpta Catholic Church Roundabout when the incident happened”.

    He continued that, “on sighting the Sergeant who was the last guard man, the hoodlums who were in a green golf car shot him dead and made away with his AK 47 riffle.

    “A passerby (civilian) was equally hit by bullet. He was quickly rushed to Federal Medical Center Owerri, where he is being attended to.

    “We are on the trial of the criminals. The Commissioner of Police who is pained by the death of the officer has activated the Tactical Units of the Command to go after the fleeing criminals. I assure you that we will get them.”

  • Applicant arraigned for allegedly beating up police officer

    A 31-year-old applicant, Adamu Hassan, was yesterday arraigned at a Daura Road Chief Magistrates’ Court, Kaduna, for allegedly beating up a police officer, Sgt. Victoria Danjuma.

    He was, however, granted N200,000 bail.

    Magistrate Zainab Mohammed ordered the defendant to produce one surety.

    The case was adjourned till May 24 for hearing.

    The defendant, who lives at Shagari Low Cost Housing Estate, Kaduna, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of criminal intimidation and assault.

    Prosecutor Sunday Baba told the court that the accused on April 24, assaulted the police officer at Ungwar Sarki, Kaduna.

    He said while the police officer was performing her duty at FCMB, near Ugwan Sarki, Kaduna, the defendant assaulted her.

    Baba said the defendant during an argument with the officer, slapped her, beat her up and pushed her down.

    He said the offences contravened sections 377 and 239 of the Penal Code Laws of Kaduna State, 2017.

  • Police officer injured in cult attack

    The Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) of Oporoma Police Division, Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa State, was injured after an attack by suspected cultists.

    A source said the officer had been hospitalised.

    He said cultists, on Tuesday, attacked the division, setting ablaze the building, to protest their leader’s death.

    The Nation learnt that the leader, on police wanted list, was shot dead when he tried to escape from police custody.

    It was gathered that Police Commissioner Mr. Don Awunah evacuated officers in the division, who went into hiding.

    Sources said other policemen had been deployed to restore peace.

    Spokesman Asinim Butswat confirmed that the DCO was injured.

    He said a female sergeant  was also injured, but is stable.

    Butswat said the police had profiled the suspects, adding that they will soon be arrested.
