  • Truck driver docked over alleged reckless driving

    A truck driver, Olalere Habeeb, who allegedly drove his truck into an office building, destroying property worth N2.2 million, was on Thursday docked in a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Habeeb, 33, whose address was not given, is facing a two-count charge of reckless driving, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    The Police Prosecutor, ASP Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the accused drove his Iveco truck with registration number Lagos, KJA 236 XA in a reckless manner on Nov. 24, 2018 along Murtala Mohammed way in Sabo area of Yaba.

    He said that Habeeb drove his truck into an office building; Greenwich Trust Properties Ltd., causing the destruction of property worth N2.2 million.

    “The office generator, the fence, the gate, the diesel tank and pumping machine were all destroyed beyond repair.

    “A woman, Mrs Toyin Akinyemi, was in a mobile toilet in the compound when the truck ran into it, she sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital,” he said.

    The offences contravene Section 19 (1) of the Road traffic law of Lagos, 2012.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 19 (1) stipulates two-year imprisonment for reckless driving.

    In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs K.B. Ayeye, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

    Ayeye said that the surety should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned until March 19 for mention.

  • Court remands labourer for allegedly disrupting ‘elders meeting’

    A Minna Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, ordered the remand in prison of a 24-year-old labourer, Adamu Zakari accused of disrupting an elders’ council security meeting and slapping a titled elder.

    Zakari is being tried on a 4-count charge of criminal conspiracy, possession of dangerous weapon, inciting disturbance and assault.

    The Police prosecutor, Insp Ahmed Ali, told the court that one Sani Barde arrested and brought the accused person to the Chanchaga Police station on May 30.

    Ali alleged that the accused accompanied by seven others, invaded the venue and disrupted the security meeting been held by elders of Chanchaga.

    He told the court that the accused allegedly slapped both the complainant and one of the titled elders of Chanchaga.

    The prosecutor told the court that a horn was recovered from the accused by the police.

    However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Magistrate, Mr Jibrin Zabo, ordered the accused to be remanded in prison and adjourned the matter until June 26, for further mention.

    18-year-old charged to court for ‘stealing’ three phones

    18-year-old man, Tope Ojo, on Wednesday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for alleged theft of three phones valued N20, 000.

    Ojo, whose address was not given, is facing a charge of stealing.

    Police prosecutor, Sgt. Monica Ikebuilo, told the Court that the accused committed the offence on October 14 at Atikankan Street, in Ado-Ekiti.

    Ikebuilo said the accused went to the shop of one Yahaya saadi and stole one Nokia phone, valued at N8, 000 and two Itel phones valued at N12,000.

    She said the accused has been stealing phones with charger in that area, and was apprehended by the complainant with his friends.

    Ikebuilo said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2012.

    She urged the Court to adjourn the case to enable her study the case file and assemble her witnesses.

    Counsel to the accused, Mr Simeon Ojo, urged the Court to grant his client bail and promised that the accused would not jump bail.

    In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs Omolola Akosile, granted the accused bail in the sum of N20, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until Nov. 9 for hearing.

    Woman in Court for breaking husband’s nose

    For allegedly headbutting her husband in a street fight which resulted in injury to his nose, a 38-year-old wife, Mrs. Kehinde Alade, was on Monday charged before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court.

    Police Prosecutor, Johnson Okunade, told the court that the headbutt she gave her husband, Mr. Adebodun Alade, resulted in blood gushing out from his nose after which he landed in a hospital.

    Okunade revealed that the accused committed the offence at about 8.00 pm on October 19 at Onala Area A, off Afao Road, Ado-Ekiti under Ado-Ekiti Magisterial District.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a charge of assault. Apart from battering his nose, Mrs. Alade is also facing trial for allegedly engaging her husband in a public fight.

    The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravened Section 252 and punishable under Section 355 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor asked for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

    The accused pleaded not guilty, and his lawyer, Mr. Busuyi Ayorinde, urged the Court to grant her bail, promising she will not jump bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Adesoji Adegboye in his ruling, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum ‎and adjourned the case till December 4 for further hearing.

    Woman inserts pepper into private part of minor

    An Oredo Magistrate Court has remanded one Amadin Eurice to prison custody for allegedly inserting pepper into the private part of a minor, a six-year-old simply identified as Patience.

    Police Prosecutor, Patrick Agbonifo, informed the court that the offences were punishable under section 355 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48, Vol. II Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 as applicable in Edo State and section 23(1) of the NAPTIP Act 2015.

    In his ruling, Presiding Magistrate F.E Akhere said the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.

    He, however, directed that the case file is forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

    Court remands seven for shooting Herdsman, Killing four cows

    An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday ordered the remand of seven men in prison custody over alleged suspected terrorism act.‎

    Police prosecutor, Sgt. Bankole Olasunkanmi, told the Court that the suspects committed the offence on May 19 in Igogo Ekiti in Moba Local Government Area of the state.

    The seven accused persons are Bamisaye Kehinde (35), Sunday Oladele (24), Bamisale Olawale (37), Obembe Richard (30), Tunde Agbetoye (39), Afolayan Sunday (30) and Onipede Michael (28) who are all indigenes of Igogo-Ekiti.‎

    Olasunkanmi alleged that, the suspects were suspected to have terrorised the community unlawfully in an attack that disturbed the peace at Igogo-Ekiti.

    He said that they were docked for being suspected to have terrorised Igogo community by unlawfully engaged in an act to unduly compel Government of Ekiti State to perform an act.

    Governor Ayo Fayose ordered the arrest and prosecution of seven men said to have allegedly attacked a herdsmen, simply identified as Ibrahim and killing four of his cows.

    The accused shot the herdsman with a local rifle but he did not die. They succeeded in killing four cows in his herd in a violence that rocked the community.

    The prosecutor said the offence committed was punishable under Section 11 of Kidnap and Terrorism Law, Laws of Ekiti State 2015.‎

    Olasunkanmi subsequently applied for a date of adjournment to enable him duplicate the case file and sent to Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

    The plea of the suspects were not taken, while their counsel, Busuyi Ayorinde, expressed the intention of seeking their bail at the high Court.‎

    The Chief Magistrate, Idowu Ayenimo, ordered that the suspects should be remanded in prison, till the outcome from DPP office.

    He adjourned the case to June 1 for mention.‎

    Police arraign Fayose’s Commissioner for ‘Stealing’

    The Police on Wednesday arraigned an aide to Governor Ayo Fayose, Dare Omotoso, for allegedly stealing granite worth N5 million.

    Omotoso, who is Commissioner 2 in the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), was docked at an Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

    The 64-year-old commissioner pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him by the court clerk.

    The charge sheet reads: “That you, Dare Omotoso, sometimes in the month of August 2016 and September 2016 did steal granites and stone dust valued about Five Million, One Hundred and Forty Thousand, Eight Hundred Naira (5,140,800:00) property of Primadet&Co.Ltd thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 390(9) of Criminal Code Cap C16 Laws of Ekiti State 2012.”

    Police Prosecutor, Inspector Caleb Leramo, told the court that he has lined up five witnesses to give evidence against the accused person including the complainant.

    He, however, applied for an adjournment to study the case file and documents relevant to the case.

    Defence counsel, O.B. Farounbi, pleaded for bail for his client in accordance with Section 15 of Ekiti State Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2013.

    Farounbi urged the court to grant the commissioner bail on liberal terms promising the court that the accused would always make himself available for trial whenever the matter is called.

    The lawyer described his client as “a well-respected person in the society who is serving as a commissioner in the state.”

    Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye granted Omotoso bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties with verifiable addresses in like sum.

    One of the two sureties, according to the magistrate, must be a senior civil servant.

    He subsequently adjourned the case to June 9 for hearing.

    Man jailed for stealing credentials

    Osagie Otabor, Benin

    A 46-year old man identified as Emmanuel David has been jailed by an Oredo Magistrates Court sitting in Benin City for stealing credentials, cash and clothings.

    Emmanuel was jailed to 12 months imprisonment after he was found guilty of the two count charges preferred against him.

    Police prosecutor, ASP Sylvester Omor,  told the Court that the convict committed the offence on July 16, at No. 10 Wire road, where he stole the sum of N17, 000, a lap-top bag valued at N3,000, two pair of jeans valued at N5,000 and T-Shirt valued N5,000 from one Okereke Uchena.

    The convict pleaded guilty to the two count charge against him bothering on stealing and malicious damage.

    Presiding Magistrates, Mr A.P Saiki, in his judgment sentenced Emmanuel to six months imprisonment without an option of fine in each of the charges.

     

     

     

  • Man jailed for stealing stabilizer

    An unrepentant thief, Blessing Obazuwa, who previously served two years jail term, has been jailed again for stealing a 500 KVA stabilizer.

    Blessing, aged 40, was jailed by an Evboriaria Magistrates sitting in Benin City.

    Presiding Magistrate, Mrs Esther Aimofumhe, said the accused person was not ready to change his lifestyle and repent after spending time in prison.

    Police Prosecutor, Inspector Violet Soyemi said the accused person committed the offence at No 21, Nova Road, Ugbowo in Egor local government.

    Inspector Soyemi informed the court that the accused person was found at her residence of one David Osaghae and stole one stabilizer valued at N35,000.

    Soyemi said the accused person was found with a knife with intent to commit felony and when arrested, confessed to the crime

    Blessing who pleaded guilty to the crime admitted the exhibits, but plead for leniency.

    The Presiding Magistrate, however, sentenced the accused person to six months imprisonment with an option fine of N50,000 in count 1, and one year imprisonment in court 11 with an option fine of N50,000

    Court jails man for stealing blackberry

    An Evboriaria Magistrate Court sitting in Benin has sentenced one Unity Agbonifo to 18 months imprisonment for attempting to steal a black berry phone valued at N35,000.

     

    The convict, aged 25, was said to have committed the crime on March 21, at No. 16, Sapele road in Benin City.

     

    He was said to have damaged a PVC ceiling worth N17,000 while attempting to escape.

     

    Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Olatoye Oluwaseun, informed the Court that the

    offence contravened section 509 and 451 of the criminal code cap 48 vol. II laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 as applicable in Edo.

     

    Presiding Magistrates, Mrs C.E Oghuma, sentenced Unity to one

    year in count one or an option of N20,000 fine and jailed him for six months in count two with an option of N10,000 fine.
