Osun: Police warn politicians against disrupting resumption of LG workers

The Police in Osun have warned politicians from disrupting the resumption of local government workers in the state on Monday, Jan. 5.

The Police issued the warning on Friday and advised non personnel of the councils to steer clear of the local government secretariats.

ASP Giwa-Alade Emmanuel, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer in Osun, in a statement issued in Osogbo, said the command had received credible intelligence on plans by some persons to disrupt the workers’ resumption.

“The command has received intelligence indicating that certain unscrupulous politicians are planning to disrupt the peaceful resumption of duties by local government employees at various council secretariats.

“Such malicious plans will not be tolerated and will be met with resolute and decisive action by the command to maintain law and order,” he said.

Emmanuel quoted the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, as warning non personnel of the councils to steer clear of the local government secretariats on Monday.

“Personnel have been directed to deal firmly and professionally with anyone attempting to incite unrest or cause disturbances,” he said.

The deputy PRO said the command would not permit miscreants to undermine the peace and tranquility that have been diligently sustained in the state.

The CP reassures law abiding residents of unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property, Emmanuel said.

“The police will continue to discharge its constitutional duties with vigilance and professionalism.

“Residents are to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and cooperate with security agencies, and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police,” Gotan said.

He asked residents to also contact the police through their dedicated numbers and social media handle.

Local government workers in Osun had boycotted work since Feb. 17, 2025, on the directive of National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Osun chapter.

NULGE said the order was a precautionary measure, following the Feb. 10, 2025, judgment of the Court of Appeal, Akure.

Following the judgment, the PDP in the state claimed that the court did not reinstate the sacked APC chairmen and councillors elected in 2022, while APC insisted on their return to office.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) consequently directed the council workers to stay away from work citing security concerns.

Again, police suspend enforcement of vehicle tinted glass permit

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has again suspended the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy across the country.

The policy was expected to take off today, but the police halted the enforcement pending the determination of a substantive suit before the court.

The NPF had announced on December 15, last year, that enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy would resume nationwide with effect from today as part of measures to enhance public safety and internal security.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) Benjamin Hundeyin, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), reads: “The force was subsequently served with an interim court order issued on December 17, 2025, directing the police to suspend the enforcement of the policy pending the hearing and determination of the suit or until the order is otherwise vacated.

“In response, the Nigeria Police Force entered an appearance in the matter, filed preliminary objections, and applied for the vacation of the interim order. The court has adjourned the case to January 20, 2026, for further proceedings.

How over 30 gunmen invaded, attacked Police Divisional Station in Ondo community

The calm of New Year’s Eve in Ipele, an agrarian community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, was shattered on Wednesday night when gunmen stormed the town, setting the Divisional Police Station ablaze.

According to an eyewitness, the attackers—said to be more than 30—invaded Ipele around 10:00 p.m. on motorbikes, firing rifles and detonating explosives at the Divisional Police Station, which was razed.

The police facility, built in honour of the late High Chief S. E. Dairo, the Olukowajo of Ipele, and inaugurated on October 19, 2016, by former Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Hilda Ibifuro Harrison, was reduced to rubbles.

Official exhibits, patrol vehicles and motorcycles were destroyed in the inferno.

As gunshots echoed through the community, doors were flung open and shut abruptly, lights went off, and terrified residents fled their homes into nearby bushes to escape harm.

One of the residents, who craved anonymity, said: “It was a terrorist attack. The attackers, numbering about 20, came into Ipele community in a commando style and started shooting before attacking the Divisional Police Station.

“Many of us had to flee into the bush. The sounds from the attack were terrifying, and no one could withstand it,” he said.

Another resident, Olorunfemi Oladotun, said: “It was a very critical one. We heard gunshots. They threw dynamites. Nobody died. We thank God for life. Everywhere was scattered.

“We were not happy about what happened last night (Wednesday), which was December 31, 2025.’’

President of Owo Youths General Assembly, Comrade Obadaye Temidayo Samson, said: “The news got to us last night that bandits attacked Ipele Police Station. The level of destruction was so much and we condemned it.’’

He appealed to the government to help them to rebuild the police station and arrest the perpetrators.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Jimoh Abayomi, described the attack as an assault on the peace and security of the state.

According to him, preliminary findings indicated that the armed men invaded the station.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal had ordered the deployment of more operational assets, including Tactical Teams, Explosive Ordnance Disposal-Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) units, and Police Mobile Force personnel to the area.

Abayomi, however, added that the situation had been brought under control, while a manhunt for the attackers was ongoing, urging the public to remain calm.

The police boss, who visited the affected station in the company of other officers of the command, further affirmed that no life was lost and no church was destroyed during the attack.

He explained that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had held a meeting with the security chiefs – which included the police, the military, the Directorate of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Amotekun Corps – to get a proper briefing of the attack.

Police clamp down on hoodlums, arrest 43 suspects in Delta

‎The Delta State Police Command has decisively quelled violent disturbances orchestrated by hoodlums and criminal elements who attempted to hijack the New Year Eve celebrations in parts of Asaba metropolis.

‎Police spokesman SP Bright Edafe said in a statement on Thursday that about 12.00am on Thursday, January 1, 2026, Command operatives led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations engaged in a robust township patrol comprising Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Commanders and their men to guarantee the safety of law-abiding residents and commuters during the festivities.

‎He said during the operation, miscreants, touts and hoodlums, emboldened by the large crowd during the celebrations, engaged in acts of lawlessness by blocking major roads, illegal car races, reckless and dangerous driving, knocking down some commuters in the melee, throwing fireworks at innocent members of the public and causing widespread public disturbance.

He said the situation degenerated further as those hoodlums resorted to violent attacks on police patrol teams, hurling stones and other dangerous projectiles, while also burning tyres at key junctions, thereby deliberately obstructing free and safe movement, especially for worshippers returning from New Year church services.

‎Edafe stated that the police, acting swiftly and professionally, deployed lawful crowd control measures to disperse the violent mob, restore order and prevent further breakdown of law and order.

‎He said as a result of the operation, forty-three (43) suspects were arrested and items recovered from them include twenty-five (25) motor vehicles, eight (8) tricycles, fireworks, various hard drugs, and other dangerous offensive weapons.

The spokesman said, “The suspects are currently in custody while investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of their involvement, after which they will be charged to court accordingly.

‎”The Delta State Police Command unequivocally condemns these criminal, reckless and unruly acts and wishes to issue a clear warning that any attempt to exploit festive periods to foment violence, obstruct public roads or attack security personnel will be met with firm and lawful resistance.

‎”‎Normalcy has since been fully restored, and the Command remains calm and under effective police control. Continuous monitoring and intensified patrols are ongoing to forestall any further breach of the peace.”

Edafe assured the residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and urged the public to celebrate responsibly, obey the law and promptly report suspicious activities.

JUST IN: Police arrest Anthony Joshua’s driver

The driver of the vehicle in which former boxing heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, lost two of his associates following an accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has been arrested, The Nation has learnt.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ogun Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed the driver’s arrest.

The Nation reports that Joshua had been discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos, late Wednesday night after doctors confirmed he was clinically fit to continue his recuperation from home.

On Monday, a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his team rammed into a stationary truck along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Two of Joshua’s close associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele, his personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach — died in the accident.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said five adult males were involved, with two fatalities recorded, one person injured and two others escaping unhurt.

FRSC officials attributed the crash to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, factors they described as among the leading causes of fatal road accidents on Nigerian highways.

In a terse statement on his verified X (formerly Twitter) page, Babaseyi on Thursday said, “The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing.”
