Police: display of foreign flags, clamour for coup treasonable

The Police described the display of foreign flags by some protesters and calls for a military takeover as an acts of treason.

It was a reaffirmation of the statement made on Monday by Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Musa after their meeting with the President.

Security sources said what you have seen in some parts of the North where so-called protesters are wielding Russian flags in the name of protesting is the handiwork of Shi’ite Islamic group.

Some of these people under arrest are being interrogated.

The Police said ongoing investigations revealed that the protest organisers in Kano, Kaduna,   Katsina, and Bauchi states lure children into participating in unpatriotic and criminal acts.

90 in custody for waving Russian flag

Spokesman for the Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi, added in a statement that over  90  persons, including tailors who produced the flags, had so far been arrested.

Adejobi’s statement partly reads: “The display of foreign flags and calls for a military takeover constitute a clear treasonable offence, revealing the motives of protest organisers to destabilise Nigeria’s democratic government.

‘’These align with actionable intelligence on the tactics of fifth columnists and non-state actors exploiting economic hardship protests to further their nefarious goals.

“Tensions from the ongoing protests have eased following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s address on August 4, 2024. However, some groups persist in subversive campaigns in the form of violent and unlawful protests, characterised by the destruction of public infrastructure and private property, looting, display of foreign flags, and calls for a military takeover. These individuals and groups will be treated as subversive agents and charged accordingly.

“The Inspector General of Police has directed Deputy Inspectors- General of Police for the Northwest and Northeast,   DIGs Bala Ciroma and Bello Makwashi to take charge of operations in the two geo- zones where subversive campaigns are ongoing under the guise of protests. They are tasked with stabilising the situation and preventing further violence in the affected states.

“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates that the use of foreign flags during protests and openly calling for a military takeover of the government is a capital offence under Nigerian law.

‘’The Police caution Nigerian youths to be wary of individuals and groups turning protests into business ventures, funded by local or foreign sponsors aiming to destabilise the country.”

‘’Evidence shows that these sponsors have paid significant sums to exploit the hardship protests, brainwashing, and misleading innocent children into aiding this campaign against the government.’’

Police beef up security as protesters march pass Wike’s house, Hyper City in Rivers

The police in Rivers state beefed up security on Tuesday, August 6, around major areas where multiple hardship protests held in Port Harcourt, the capital city.

The presence of policemen prevented the protesters from nursing any plan to  attack the private residence of the FCT Minister and former governor of the state, Chief Nyesom Wike.

The protesters marched along the popular Ada George road where Wike’s house is located and on getting to the front of the courtyard stopped and chanted some songs in solidarity.

While some sat on the major road in front of the house, others were pointed their fingers at the mansion saying, “see Wike’s house.”

But policemen, who cordoned off the area with an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) prevented them from going close to the walls of the house.

The entire stretch of Wike’s house is located directly opposite the Ada George Police Station making the protesters to abandon any ulterior motive.

The protests were spontaneously held in different parts of the city including the popular Aba Road.

The protesters also created tension when they passed close to the new Hyper City Mall, but were discouraged from invading and looting the facility because of heavy presence of policemen around the area.

The protesters did not spare the signpost of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Secretariat along the Aba Road.

They vandalised the billboard and reportedly torched the Secretariat.

At Rumuigbo Junction, the angry protesters barricaded the road with used tyres and made bonfires.

There was an internal rivalry among the protesters along Aba Road, close to the Federal Secretariat as they fought over allegations of financial inducements.

Rivers police vow crackdown as protest turns violent in Rivers

The Rivers Police Command has warned the ongoing protest in Rivers State is assuming a frightening dimension.

The police said the protesters were engaging in unlawful acts such as extortion, destruction of vehicle and harassment of business owners.

On Tuesday, there were fears among residents of some areas in Port Harcourt following warnings by protesters on Monday.

The protesters warned residents, motorists and shop owners to either join the protest or stay indoors.

Many shops that opened on Tuesday were seen attaching braches of trees and leaves on their shops and businesses premises to show solidarity to the protesters.

At Rumuokoro area of Port Harcourt, protesters were seen going violent and setting up bonfires.

The police said the lack of clear leadership among the protesters was gradually leading to a breakdown of law and order and vowed to arrest and prosecute any one infringing on the rights of others.

Rivers police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, in a statement on Tuesday morning confirmed that the  protest was turning another shape.

Iringe-Koko said the command was closely monitoring the protest in the state and was providing security.

The police in the statement expressed worry over the call by protesters on traders and motorists to stay at home or join the protest.

The statement said:  “On August 5th, 2024, the command observed that the protest in Rivers State has taken a concerning turn.

“The protesters were earlier advised to conduct their demonstration peacefully within designated locations, while the police would provide adequate protection and isolate any criminal elements.

“However, the command has noticed a lack of identifiable leadership or coordination among the various groups, leading to a breakdown of order.

“Regrettably, the protesters have resorted to unlawful acts, such as burning tires, extorting motorists, blocking roads, damaging vehicles, harassing business owners, and stealing from innocent residents.

“Furthermore, a group has threatened that the pattern of the protest will change on August 7th, 2024, calling on traders and motorists to stay at home or join the protest.

“The Rivers State Police Command affirms the constitutional right of citizens to protest and express their views.

“However, the command has observed clear indications that the organizers are losing control of the protesters, who are resorting to more violent and criminal conduct.

“Therefore, the police will act decisively to arrest and prosecute any individual who attempts to infringe on the rights of others or engage in criminal activities under the guise of the protest.

“The police will take necessary and decisive action immediately the protest stops being peaceful.

“The police advise that protesters should remain in the designated protest areas, Pleasure Park and  Abali Park . They should refrain from disrupting the free movement of citizens or engaging in any unlawful activities.

“The command is committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all residents during this period.”

UPDATED: Security operatives disperse protesters in Abuja

    … Police arrest three

Security operatives made several attempts to disperse protesters in the Karu area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The protesters had just begun assembling when security agents went after them and arrested three individuals.

An eyewitness, Ibrahim Sani, who spoke to our correspondent, said that the police had to fire tear gas to calm the situation before making the arrests.

He said: “I was shocked when I saw some people gathering at Karu. I thought the gathering was supposed to be in town. The police came and dispersed the protesters with teargas. They arrested about three people that I saw.”

Security operatives are all over the nation’s capital monitoring the situation to forestall the breakdown of law and other.

Police also shot tear gas to disperse protesters in Gede, Jikwoyi area of the nation’s capital.

In the Nyanya area, the protesters were out in large numbers.

It would be recalled that on day 1 of the protest, the protesters started looting and molesting commuters in the axis.

This is coming less than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu addressed the nation on the issue.

Meanwhile, there is an increased vehicular movement on day 5 of the nationwide protests in FCT.

But government offices are still deserted as petty traders wait with bated breath for patronage.

The Federal secretariat in Abuja is open but most officials of ministries, departments and agencies are at most few in the offices.

This may not be unconnected with the fear that protesters may return and clash with security operatives.

Security operatives also fired teargas at protesters at the Moshood Abiola Stadium over agitation to move to town.

Former Country Director, ActionAid, Ene Obi who also joined protesters at the Moshood Abiola stadium lamented that the situation is getting out of hand.

She said the government should urgently intervene over the high cost of living, adding: “In places like Lagos you have a lot of adults like that but in Abuja, you leave your young people to be telling you how to live your life, it took the young people to come and advocating for change, and you cannot come in but you are the one going to the market. You can’t buy Garri; Garri is now #1500 per mudu.

“As at the last time, three weeks ago that I bought it, you have seen that it is almost N2,500, then you have a tuber that is about 5 thousand naira. Yam, that is for the poorest of the poor is not for the poor again”.

Also, a trend of protesters waving foreign flags during the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest has continued.

Protesters were sighted holding Russian flags near the Nyanya Bridge, a suburb in Abuja, on Monday.

The trend was first observed in Kano, northern Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, on the first day of the protest.

On Saturday, the protesters defied a 24-hour curfew and marched through the city, urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to intervene in Nigeria.

Some of the youths who spoke to reporters said they were leaning towards Russia because of a lack of trust in the present government.

On Sunday, more Russian flag carriers were also spotted in Kano.

  • We only arrested riotous individuals during nationwide protest – Police

We only arrested riotous individuals during nationwide protest – Police

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, says the police operatives only arrested riotous individuals who were engaged in criminality during the ongoing nationwide protest.

Adejobi said this during the monthly news conference organised by The Strategic Communication Inter-agency Policy Committee (SCIPC) hosted by the Department of States Services (DSS) on Monday in Abuja.

He said that there were differences between protests and riots.

Adejobi said that while there were peaceful protests in some states, there were riots and criminalities in others on the first day.

“So, arrests of certain individuals who have been riotous should not be seen as the arrest of protesters.

“Let us get it clear. There are some states in Nigeria they have been having peaceful protests and security agencies have been engaging them.

“I am sure and I know you are aware that some governors and public office holders have been engaging them.

“You can only engage in a gathering, an assembly that is friendly and accessible, where you have individuals wielding stones, offensive weapons, dangerous weapons and all the likes.

“I don’t think a reasonable man will move close or be in the middle of such a gathering,” he said.

Adejobi said that the police, military and other security agencies engaged the protesters professionally across the country.

He said that the protesters in Abuja had violated the court ruling that restricted them to the main bowl of the National Stadium.

According to him, some persons have deliberately and willfully violated the court ruling.

He said the presence of the police was not to harass or intimidate anybody but to protect the national assets, adding that the barricade at the Eagle square was to protect the three arms zone.

“You will agree with me that in some areas in Abuja, we recorded riots and this protest was violent.

“Anywhere we have these engagements, I don’t think we should refer to such an assembly or a gathering or a procession as peaceful anymore.

“I want to confirm again that those that have been arrested so far, to the best of my knowledge and with the records I have from all the states, are criminally minded individuals.

“They went out, who actually engaged in various criminal offences ranging from armed robbery, homicide, mischief, or the one we call malicious damage of private and public facilities, owners are in pain as I speak with you.

“So I don’t want us to use the word protesters for those who are actually, to the best of our knowledge and based on our findings, that are rioters and of course, criminally minded individuals.

“We have arrested 873 suspects so far  and these suspects are those who are directly connected to one criminal offence or the other,” he added.

Adejobi also denied that the police and other security agencies attacked journalists who were covering the protests, adding that they only prevented people from gathering at unauthorised places.

He said the police had also apprehended some individuals for treasonable felony for carrying the flags of a foreign country on the Nigerian soil.

“We are profiling him, we want to get other sponsors like him and as I speak with you, the same thing has happened in Kaduna.

“We have been able to arrest 30 of them with the same Russian flags and I don’t want us to believe that for now, at this stage, we are still having a protest.

“The undertones of this protest, based on our intelligence before it commenced on Aug. 1, have begun to manifest,” he added.

Police sources said the hoodlums attempted to attack some divisional police stations.

The officers on duty resisted  the assault.

An eye witness said: “the clash began when groups of youths hit the streets in continuation of the nationwide protest that has been marred by violence in Kano and many other states.”

“At least eight people were shot in our area including females and children. An elderly woman is now dead alongside three others while many have sustained serious injuries,“Abdulkadir Musa, a resident of Rijiyar Lemo, said.

“What really happened was, you know the curfew is still in place, but some guys defied the restriction and came out protesting and that’s when the security operatives swooped into action to disperse them.

“In the process, there were shootings .”

A Facebook user Omar Khalid Saleh said a  teenager was shot  at Kofar Nasarawa in Kano metropolis.

The Nigeria Police yesterday dismissed as false reports of deliberate action by security operatives to kill participants in the  #EndBadGovernance protest.

The police particularly took exception to claims by Amnesty International that13 individuals have lost their lives since the commencement of the protest on Thursday.

Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi said that contrary to the claims by AI, the security operatives had no hand in the seven deaths known to the authorities so far.

According to Adejobi four individuals died in Borno State on Thursday in “a terrorist attack by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP elements who infiltrated the crowd of protesters and detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).”

Thirty-four other persons were injured in the incident, he said.

“Additionally, an incident occurred involving an unregistered Honda Prelude car that ran into the protesters, resulting in the death of two civilians.

“The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Although the vehicle was vandalized after the incident, it has been recovered and is currently in police custody.

“Efforts are ongoing to trace the driver and bring him to justice.

“There was another incident reported in Yauri, Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, where a group of individuals mobilized to loot a shop.

“In the process, a local vigilante man shot and killed one of the looters.

“The Commissioner of Police in charge of Kebbi State is currently investigating the incident.

“This brings the total number of deaths recorded during the protests to seven.”

Continuing, the police spokesman said: “It is important to state that there were no other recorded fatalities during the protests apart from those mentioned above.

“However, incidences of armed robbery, arson, mischief, looting of public institutions and private businesses, destructions of both public and private property were recorded during the protest.

“Arrests were made with respect to these criminal incidents and a number of recoveries made from the suspects while the protest was going on.

“The Nigeria Police personnel deployed to manage the protests have acted professionally, refraining from using lethal weapons.

“In instances where protesters became riotous, the police employed teargas to disperse them.

“Even when our officers on lawful duty were attacked and injured, the police effected arrests, using only teargas, demonstrating utmost restraint.

“In an effort to combat the trend of crimes and criminality, the police have arrested a total of six hundred and eighty-one (681) individuals who committed various criminal offences such as armed robbery, arson, mischief and destruction of both public and private property.

“Dangerous weapons, including two AK-47 rifles and assorted live ammunition, were recovered from the so-called protesters.

“Additionally, stolen items such as furniture, electronics, phones, other various shop items and vital infrastructures worth billions of naira were recovered from the arrested persons.

“Contrary to circulating news, organisers of the protest or protesters were not arrested. Those in police custody are under investigation for clear connections to criminal activities.”

Thirty-eight of the arrests were made in the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday, 17 in Gombe State, 75 in Jigawa, 24 in Kaduna and 326 in Kano.

Katsina recorded seven arrests, Nasarawa 50 and Sokoto 81.

Sixty-three additional arrests were made on Friday, 57 of which were in Kano and six in the FCT.

Adejobi said nine police officers sustained various degrees of injuries during attacks by protesters.

He added: “One of them, who was initially reported dead, miraculously survived but remains in critical condition.

“The ongoing protest has obviously turned violent. We therefore advise law abiding citizens taking part in the protest across the country to immediately withdraw from it.

“This advice becomes necessary in view of the violence that has characterised the protest in the last two days.

“It is reasonably expected that peaceful protesters would have withdrawn from the protest that has turned violent.

“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to providing accurate information and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens during these challenging times.

“It is essential to recognise that the strategic deployment by the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, and the decisive clampdown on criminal elements exploiting the protests for unlawful activities, has been highly effective in quelling tension and curbing the violence and anarchy witnessed on the first day of the protests.

“During this challenging period, the Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its commitment to performing its lawful duties with professionalism, maintaining law and order, and preventing anarchy throughout the country.

“The Nigeria Police urges all citizens and residents to disregard unfounded and psychologically manipulative reports circulating about incidents during these protests.”

Say no one was killed in Kubwa

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command in a separate statement yesterday denied the killing of a teenager by security operatives in Kubwa.

Spokesman for the command said operatives deployed to the axis “were not issued lethal arms but only with anti-riot equipment not capable of occasioning the death of the teenager.”

However, Police Commissioner Benneth C. Igweh has ordered an immediate investigation to ascertain the remote cause of the victim’s death.

NLC President alleges killing of protesters

Citing ‘unconfirmed reports’, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, alleged that 40 lives have been lost to the protests.

He said: “With unconfirmed reports putting casualties at 40+ in two days of managing the EndHunger protest across the country, we have sufficient reasons (backed up by reports and video clips) to call to question the professionalism of our security personnel as this represents nothing but massacre of citizens.

“Had the security personnel deployed the same thoughtless brutal precision against bandits or other criminals, our country would have been an el dorado.

“As the lead-agency in internal security management, the police bear the burden of this massacre.

“Kaduna State police command represents the worst case scenario in which one of the fleeing protesters was heard on camera desperately appealing to deployed police personnel to not shoot until his voice was drowned by a hail of bullets with the resultant death of a protester on the spot and several injured.

“In the same breath, Edo State Police Command under the personal command of COMPOL Funsho Adegboroye represents the best in crowd management as he could be heard interacting and cajoling the protesters and almost effortlessly bringing them under control.

“It might be convenient to argue that the two states do have different socio-cultural milieu, however, an incontestable truth common to both, and indeed all the states, is that human life is sacred and should NEVER be taken.

“We are deeply saddened by this wanton taking of life by trigger-happy police personnel.

“In Asokoro, Abuja under the command of Compol Bennett Igweh, protesters were heard querying why the police were shelling or tear-gassing them as they were marching solemnly without breaking a twig.

“One noticeable pattern was that once police personnel introduced violence, all hell broke loose in fulfillment of the credo that violence begets violence.”

Police barricade Abuja stadium with vehicles, disperse protesters

Efforts by protesters to continue their action beyond the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja yesterday was frustrated by the police who fired tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd.

The police also barricaded the stadium with armoured patrol carriers and patrol vehicles.

Some protesters claimed the police fired live bullets at them.

No life lost in Katsina — Police

The Police Command in Katsina State said there was no loss of life recorded in the state during the protest.

The command’s spokesman, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), said in a statement in Katsina that social media reports to that effect were untrue.

He said:“The command wishes to address a misleading viral video circulating on social media platforms of a security agent lying motionless on the ground alleged to have been shot dead by a police officer while trying to disperse protesters,.

“The video is manipulated and taken out of context as there was no such shooting incident throughout the command during the protest.

“The fact is that the security agent shown in the video is an officer of the NSCDC who fell from a patrol vehicle due to an accident involving the vehicle at the scene of the protest.

”He was immediately rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital (formerly Federal Medical Centre), Katsina, where he was treated and discharged,” Sadiq-Aliyu said.

He asked the public to disregard what he described as a ‘misinformation’, and always verify information through the official channels.

According to him, the command assures them of the strength of their synergy with sister security agencies in the state as they work together to maintain public safety and order.

“We are also assuring the public of our highest level of professionalism in the discharge of our duties, and we will continue to work tirelessly to maintain peace and stability in Katsina State,” he assured.

Strategise with us, Kwara police chief tells protest leaders

The Kwara State Police Command requested organisers of the protest in the state to meet with the Commissioner of Police to strategise on security measures and ensure the safety of all participants.

Command Spokesperson, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, in a statement, advised protesters to restrict their activities to court-designated venue in Ilorin, the state capital.

The advice came in the wake of the hijacking of the protest in Niger, Borno, Kano and Yobe states by hoodlums.

The police said:”Citizens wishing to exercise their franchise must comply with the recent court ruling in the state.

“We urge all groups to follow the court ruling, which stipulates that protests must take place at the Metropolitan Square along Asa-Dam Road.

“The Post Office is not an approved location for such gatherings.

Your cooperation is essential towards maintaining public order and safety.”

    Protest loses steam

The crowd of protesters appeared to have thinned down considerably yesterday in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, although some youths returned to the streets of Kano waving Russian flags and calling for intervention by Russian President Vladimir Putin..

Protesters who had gathered at Ojota, Lagos made an attempt to block a section of the Ketu-Ojota axis of Ikorodu Road but were stopped by the police.

In Port Harcourt, the protesters were entertained by artist Sky B at the Rumuobiakani Roundabout.

There was a further improvement in socio-economic activities in the major cities yesterday.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde hailed the youth and parents in the state for keeping the peace.

The governor, who spoke through Information Commissioner Dotun Oyelade, appealed to residents to continue to be law abiding and ensure that their agitation is without rancour and incitement throughout the period.

Governor Makinde also called on Nigerians in states where various degrees of violence have been recorded during the protest to allow peace to reign as the search for good governance continues.
