    Police debunk killing at Old Oyo National Park

    The Oyo Police Command has said no life was lost during a gun duel between some suspected bandits and vigilante members inside Old Oyo National Park in Saki East local government.

    The Police stated though three members of vigilante group were injured during the incident, efforts were in top gear to apprehend the culprits.

    Three persons were said to have critically injured in a gun duel between armed bandits and local vigilante at Sepeteri in Saki East local government area.

    The incident, which occurred inside the Old Oyo National Park on Monday, threw the entire people in the neighbourhood into panic.

    Several shots were fired during the clash that lasted for several hours before the intervention of the security operatives.

    It was gathered that residents mobilised against the bandits.

    A statement by the spokesman of the Command, Adewale Osifeso said: “Preliminary investigations revealed that some local vigilante groups around the aforementioned location, while in pursuit of alleged abductors engaged the latter in a gun duel which led to the injury of three  vigilante members who were part of the team.”

    “Consequent on the above, it is important to note that no live was lost and the injured are presently responding to the medical intervention availed to them at the hospital.”

    “Furthermore, there has been an increase in the level of deployment of Police operational and tactical assets with other relevant security services in a bid to forestall any untoward occurrence(s) within the area and its environs.”

    “While urging all law abiding residents to go about their lawful business(es) without any fear or hindrance as the Police and other security agencies remain firmly on top of the situation, members of public are encouraged to provide credible and timely information to the Police and other law enforcement agencies at all times to help nip crime in the bud.”

    Police kill two cult-suspects in Rivers

    The police have killed two cult-suspects who invaded the Odiemerenyi community in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, killing five persons at the weekend.

    The cultists were said to be loyal to a cult leader, David Gift, aka, 2Baba, who reportedly led the murder of Divisional Officer, SP Bako Angbashin in Odumude community.

    Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that the police arrived the community following a distress call.

    She said: “Operatives of Ahoada Police station received a distress call about 01:00hours on November 12, that suspected cultists invaded Odiemerenyi Community in search of suspected informants.

    “They immediately swung into action and mobilised with other tactical units to the scene. The hoodlums, who, unfortunately, had killed five residents, opened fire on sighting the police. They were however overpowered by and two of them fatally wounded.

    “The Commissioner of Police has also ordered the Ahoada Division and other tactical units to redouble effort to ensure the arrest of David Gift and other fleeing suspects.

    “He also urges residents to go about their legitimate business as adequate security is in place to counter any security challenges.”

    Kwara police arrest seven suspected kidnappers

    The Kwara State police command has arrested seven suspected kidnappers.

    Commissioner of Police Victor Olaiya said the arrest was made possible by a team drawn from the Counter Terrorism Unit, Anti-Robbery, Anti-Kidnapping, Anti-Cultism, Anti-Narcotic, Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD), Police Mobile Force (PMF), and Police Medical.

     The suspects are Umaru Mohammodu aka Yellow, Mohammodu Mohammodu aka Kerimi, Garuba Abubakar, Iliasu Usman, Ibraheem Abubakar, Usman Haruna and Umaru Bello.

    Olaiya said over of N1.7 million was recovered during a search of their hideout.

      He added: “The seven suspects have been arraigned in court and presently remanded in prison custody. This singular effort resulted in the lull experienced in the activities of these undesirable elements until the incident of November 10, when a cleric and another person was kidnapped in Agbeku area of Ifelodun Local Government Area.

    “The command would not relent in its pressure on the criminals until they relocate from the state. The command is committed to rescue all victims sooner than expected.”

    PSC chair to police: forestall any crisis after announcement of election results

    The chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Solomon Arase, has advised the police to remain on guard and prepared to forestall any breakdown of law and order after the announcement of election results.

    Arase, who monitored the election in Kogi state commended the three Deputy Inspectors General of Police who supervised Police operations in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States for their quick responses to the Commission’s intermittent requests for Police intervention in troubled areas.

    The DIGs were, Frank Mba; Sani Habu, and Daniel Isokari-Pedro.

    The PSC boss advised that the police: “should remain on guard and prepared to forestall any breakdown of law and order after the announcement of the election results.”

    He also directed that in the few places where there were pockets of Police misconduct, the Police Management should quickly investigate and forward its recommendations to the Commission for immediate disciplinary action: “since every act of misdemeanour must have commensurate consequences.”

    Arase said the Commission will continue to monitor police conduct during elections as it serves to put the police on its toes for optimal performance.

    According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Head Press and Public Relations, PSC, Ikechukwu Ani: “The PSC Staff Monitors operated from the nine Senatorial districts while the National Coordinating team partnered the Civil Society groups and operated from the Situation Room in Abuja.

    “The Police Service Commission Staff Monitors deployed to the nine Senatorial districts of Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states says the policemen on election duty were courageous and fairly contained intermittent cases of attempts to hijack the elections.

    He said: “The Officers in several of the Polling Units visited were said to be courteous, approachable and professional. Although there were incidents of attacks on voting units, some arrests were recorded in many places, especially in Kogi State.

    “The Police were said to have also contained pockets of attacks in Brass and some other locations in the riverine areas of Bayelsa State.

    “There were however reports of vote buying in the three states but without the connivance of Police officers on election duties.

    “The Commission monitored five of the eight local governments in Imo West. In Imo North and East, there were visible patrols of Policemen in collaboration with the Military on the major roads with Police helicopters said to have hovered over the voting space throughout the election period.

    “Police officers were said to have arrived in most of the voting units in Bayelsa very early, properly dressed and exhibited a high level of professionalism.

    “PSC Monitors sighted an average of two policemen in most of the voting units while in few others one police personnel was seen.

    “The Police were said to have sent early signals in Kogi State where it reportedly arrested several miscreants who attacked Polling Units. The Officers on election duty were complimented by Officers from sister agencies.”

    From the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) Kano state chapter, a sociocultural group has come a word of commendation to the Kano State Commissioner of Police Mohammed Usaini Gumel for his professionalism and dedication to service.

    The Chairman of ACF, Goni Farouk Umar, PhD, who expressed his appreciation on behalf of the group in a letter personally addressed to the police chief.

    The letter a copy of which was cited by our correspondent reads in part: “Your life has been hallmarked by service to humanity as you fought against phone snatching, thuggery and many illegal activities within the state through the instrumentality of awareness and sensitisation campaigns that rekindle the hope of our people and bringing everyone into a better and stronger disposition of ensuring that secured and prosperous Kano state and entire Nigeria at large is in place.”

    Police detain grandmother for battering granddaughter

    The Niger State Child Rights Agency and Police has arrested a grandmother and two others for battering an eight-year-old girl in Minna.

    The Nation learned that the grandmother identified as Safiya Azumi who lives in the Daru Salam community in the Kpakungun area of Minna was in the habit of beating the little girl and locking her inside a room to starve her for several days.

    The acting director general of the agency, Mallam Suleiman Shehu, was alerted by neighbours about the situation on Friday, November 10, and he mobilized some staff to rescue the victim.

    The girl was rescued with several dislocations on her hands and several bruises on her body and face.

    The Agency called the State Criminal Investigation Department where the suspects were taken to the GRA police station where they were detained while the victim was taken to Minna General Hospital for medical treatment where her dislocated hand was adjusted.

    Speaking to the victim at the hospital, she identified the woman whom she stayed with as her maternal grandmother and the other two people as her aunt whom she called Tani, and her husband whom she identified as Ndagi Bala.

    She stated that the three individuals acquired her from her mother, expressing confusion over why she faced mistreatment despite consistently putting forth her best effort to complete any assigned task.

    Kogi 2023: Police bar security escort for VIPs at polling units

    The Police last night said no security personnel would be allowed to escort any important personality to the polling units in Kogi State during voting.

    The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Kogi State Governorship Election, Habu Sani, gave this order according to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Kogi State Police Command, Superintendent of Police, William Ovye Aya, in Lokoja.

    According to the statement the DIG “ordered that on no account should any Security Personnel attached to VIPs, Political and Public Officers or any personality across the State will be allowed to move or escort their Principals during the period of restrictions of vehicular movement.

    “He warns that any Officer who is caught violating this order by accompanying any VIP, Political and Public Official or any other personality to the Polling Unit will be arrested and dealt with accordingly.

    “The DIG appeals to VIPs, Political and Public Officers to note this order so as to avoid any embarrassment that might befall them. Nothing that, the Police and other Security Agencies will not allow any security breach during the period of the Election.”

    Police warn protesters against attempt to burn court

    The Plateau State Police command yesterday warned hoodlums against any attempt to burn down Court of Appeal complex, Jos division and other sensitive infrastructures in state.

    The warning by the police came a day after supporters of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), staged protest around Maraban Jama’a, Secretariat junction and old Airport Junction in protest to the Appeal Court Judgment which sacked all PDP lawmakers in National Assembly from Plateau over lack of party structure.

    The Nation reports that supporters of the PDP on Wednesday, gathered around the strategic areas to vent their angers over the court Judgment against their party.

    The police in a statement by spokesperson of the command, DSP Alabo Alfred, condemned the activities of the PDP supporters, saying they wouldn’t allow any unlawful protest in the state.

    He said the police commissioner has observed with dismay the way and manner in which some aimless group of persons clustered and unlawfully blocked the public highway around Old Airport junction, Mararaban Jama’a and even attempted to set ablaze the Court of Appeal structure, Jos, in the name of protest against the judgment.

    “In order to maintain peace, law and order in the state, the CP has warned individuals, or group of persons protesting under any guise, whose reaction could truncate the peace currently being enjoyed in the state to desist from such actions or else, the police command will not hesitate to take decisive action against the perpetrators in accordance with the extant laws.

     “The CP therefore warned parents, traditional/religious leaders, to warn their wards and subjects, to steer clear from such unlawful protests to avoid being apprehended by the law enforcement agencies,” he added.

    The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has ordered the posting and redeployment of 40 Senior Police Officers comprising 14 Assistant Inspectors General of Police and 26 Commissioners of Police to various Commands and Formations in the country.

    Egbetokun said the development is part of mandate to have a professionally competent, service driven, rule of law compliant, and people friendly Police Force, and to reflect the new status of senior officers who were just recently elevated to their next ranks.

    Findings also revealed that the posting and redeployment is part to efforts to have a free, fair and credible governorship election in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states.
