    • Beachway Homes boss Adeyinka pleads not guilty

The police have arraigned a real estate developer, Adeyinka Lawal, at the Federal High Court in Lagos over an alleged N1.33 billion fraud.

The Force Criminal Investigation Department (Force CID), Annex, Alagbon–Ikoyi, charged Lawal, the Chief Executive Officer of Beachway Homes Limited, alongside his company, before Justice Deinde Dipeolu. The charge is numbered FHC/L/392c/2025.

The prosecution alleged conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, money laundering, fraudulent conversion and fraud.

Prosecuting counsel, Samuel Ogala, told the court that the 60-year-old defendant, his company and others now at large allegedly committed the offences between 2020 and 2023 at Elegushi, Lekki, Lagos State.

According to the prosecution, Lawal, with the intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N1.33 billion from one Mr. Ifeanyi Nweke under the false pretence that the money would be used to build a 52-unit estate at Ilesan–Elegushi, Lekki.

Ogala told the court that the representation was false and that the defendant knew it to be so.

He further alleged that upon receiving the money, Lawal fraudulently converted the funds to his personal use.

The prosecutor said the alleged offences contravened Sections 8 and 1(1)(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and were punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004.

He also told the court that the defendant’s actions contravened Section 7(2)(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, as well as Section 20(b) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The prosecutor informed the court that the defendant had yet to fulfil the bail conditions earlier granted by the court.

He urged the court to remand the defendant in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) pending compliance with the bail terms.

Defence counsel told the court that he had been indisposed since his client was arraigned and released to him in July 2025, explaining that this accounted for the delay in perfecting the bail.

Justice Dipeolu ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions.

The case was adjourned to March 18 for trial.

The charges against the defendants read in part:

“That you, Adeyinka Lawal ‘M’, Beachway Homes Ltd. and others now at large, between the years 2020 and 2023 at the Elegushi–Lekki area of Lagos State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony, to wit: obtaining money by false pretence, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 8 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.

“That you, ADEYINKA LAWAL ‘M’, BEACHWAY HOMES LTD. and others now at large, between the years 2020 and 2023 at the Elegushi–Lekki area of Lagos State, did with intent to defraud fraudulently obtain the sum of N1.33 billion from Mr. Ifeanyi Nweke under the pretence of using same to build a 52-unit estate at Ilesan–Elegushi, Lekki, a representation you knew to be false.

“That you fraudulently converted the sum of N1.33 billion belonging to Mr. Ifeanyi Nweke to your own use.

“That you laundered, transferred and retained the said sum of N1.33 billion, thereby committing offences contrary to and punishable under the relevant provisions of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.”

Adeh said, “The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command is aware of a planned peaceful protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) FCT Council, scheduled to hold tomorrow, Tuesday, 3rd February 2026, within the Federal Capital Territory.

“While the Command recognizes and respects the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and protest, and remains committed to providing adequate security for all lawful activities, intelligence reports at the disposal of the Police indicate plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest for purposes inimical to public peace and security.

  • Police illegally released my husband’s body, widow alleges

Police illegally released my husband’s body, widow alleges

Widow of the late businessman and politician, Bamidele Akingboye, Mrs Christiana Akingboye, has accused the Lagos State Police Command of unlawfully releasing her husband’s body.

Citing the Coroner’s System Law of Lagos State, she maintained that the police’s role is investigatory and ends upon completion of the post-mortem and issuance of legal advice by the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).

According to her, following the family’s exoneration by the DPP, there was no authority for the police to release the body to third parties.

In an appeal to President Bola Tinubu, the Senate and Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mrs Akingboye alleged that the conduct of the Police after her husband’s death amounted to abuse of power, breach of due process and a deliberate marginalisation of the deceased’s immediate family.

She stated that following investigations, the DPP issued legal advice exonerating her and her children, effectively bringing any lawful police involvement to an end.

According to her, there was no criminal justification for further interference by the Police.

Mrs Akingboye alleged that confidential investigative documents, including the DPP’s legal advice, were leaked online and circulated by a foreign-based blogger before the police communicated the outcome to her or her children.

“The police have not communicated the outcome of the investigation to us till date. We only read about it online,” she said.

The widow further accused the police of mishandling her late husband’s personal effects.

She said her husband’s mobile phones were collected from her as evidence, alongside his medications.

According to her, the phones were later released to her estranged stepson, while the drugs collected from her have not been returned.

She added that repeated demands for the return of the deceased’s belongings were ignored, raising concerns that investigative protocols and the chain of custody were compromised.

Mrs Akingboye said her lawyers wrote to the Police and morgue, warning that neither her husband’s body nor his personal effects should be released to any person without the consent of the immediate family or an order of court.

Despite this, she said officers at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Lagos, invited both parties to a meeting on January 23.

She explained that the only issue concluded at the meeting was the return of her family’s passports, which were handed over, adding that the Police promised to convene another meeting the following week to address outstanding issues.

“Till now, no one has called us,” she said.

Days later, Mrs Akingboye said the family learnt from a family source that the remains of her husband had been released quietly to her estranged stepson and unknown persons, without notice to her, her consent and any court order.

She added that the phones and medications collected from her are also yet to be returned.

Citing the Coroner’s System Law of Lagos State, she maintained that the police’s role is strictly investigatory and ends upon completion of the post-mortem and issuance of legal advice by the DPP.

She argued that following the family’s exoneration, there was no lawful authority for the police to release the body to third parties.

Mrs Akingboye alleged that while her estranged stepson enjoyed preferential access and outcomes, the widow and children of the deceased were misled and kept in the dark.

She said several petitions were written to the Inspector-General of Police, but none resulted in restraint or accountability.

Expressing concern for her safety and that of her children, Mrs Akingboye called on the President, the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions and the IGP to order an independent investigation, insisting that Nigeria must not allow power to override justice, even in death.

Operatives of the Oyo Police Command have arrested seven members of the dreaded 10-man banditry gang, including the alleged mastermind and ring leader of the attack that led to the death of some forest rangers and operatives of the Old Oyo National Park.

The spokesman of the Command, Ayanlade Olayinka, in a statement, said upon receipt of the report of the attack, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Femi Haruna, immediately directed deployment of necessary operational assets to the affected area and ordered that the Command Monitoring Unit take over the investigation.

He said: “The suspects were apprehended at their various hideouts across different locations in the country through painstaking, intelligence-led investigation.

“Flowing from the arrests, the three suspects initially apprehended were identified as Mohammed Dangi – Male, 52 years; Abubakar Abdullahi – Male, adult, and Sheu Usman – Male, adult

“During sustained interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime and provided detailed accounts of how ten (10) members of their armed banditry group, riding on five motorcycles, carried out the attack. Crucially, investigations revealed that the primary intention of the assailants was to forcefully free members of their armed banditry syndicate who had earlier been arrested and were in the custody of forest guards for various criminal activities within the National Park and adjoining communities, which they successfully did during the attack.

“Building on these confessions and intelligence disclosures, further discreet investigation led to the arrest of four (4) additional members of the syndicate on 25th January, 2026. They are: Toro Malami – Male, 43 years; Usman Alhaji Ummaru – Male, adult; Laolo Muhammadu – Male, 22 years and Usman Alhaji Isah – Male, 32 years.

“Operatives of the Command Monitoring Unit, in collaboration with other security agencies, are intensifying efforts to ensure that all remaining suspects are tracked down and brought to justice.”
