    Police destroy N50m seized drugs

The police in Lagos have destroyed banned drugs worth N50million.

Acting Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal, who set the drugs ablaze at the Task Force Yard in Ojota, ordered the arrest of anyone found peddling banned substances.

It was, however, unclear whether the destroyed drugs included the 38 bags of marijuana worth N20million which were recovered on October 5 during a raid at Idi-Araba.

Edgal, who led reporters to the site, said it would assure residents of his commitment to rid the state of drug peddlers.

He said: “You will recall that during the town hall meetings I held that I promised to rid Lagos of drug peddlers.

“This exercise is to clamp down on drug peddlers and also to assure members of the public that our youths have no access to hard drugs.

“Drug fuels crime and deviant behaviour and that is why the police have decided to rid every nook and cranny of the state of illicit substances.”

Continuing, Edgal noted that Codeine, a cough syrup sold at pharmacies was one of the drugs being abused.

Describing the wrong use of codeine by young people as worrisome, the police chief urged pharmacies “to sell cough syrups only to those with doctor’s prescription”.

Imohimi added that the command had partnered different groups, especially the Student Union Government (SUG), not only to fight cultism but to end to sales and consumption of hard drugs in the state.

Imo CP charges new intakes on professional conduct

Imo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike, Tuesday charged new Police intakes posted to the Command to promote the image of the Police by shunning unprofessional conducts.

Receiving the 229 intakes who are all indigenes of the State, the Commissioner of Police said the idea is in line with the community policing agenda of the Inspector General of Police,  Ibrahim Idris.

According to him, “you have a moral burden of protecting the lives and property of Imo people. I therefore urge to be vigilant as you are posted to your various divisions, keep your eyes open and your lips sealed. Don’t engage in any form of criminality that will undermine the image of the Police Force”.

He charged them further to be fair but firm in the discharge of their duties, warning them not to harass or intimidate the public they were supposed to protect.

In his words, “you have just started a journey of 35 years, it is a very long journey and how far you can go is determined by your attitude towards the job.  We are going to mentor and monitor you using the stick and carrot approach. When you do right, we commend you but when you do wrong, we reprimand you as a deterrent to others”.

  • Lawyer accuses police of frustrating court order

Lagos lawyer, Kayode Fasetire, has accused the police of preventing the execution of a court order.

Fasetire appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, to call the concerned individuals to order.

Fasetire, who is counsel to Redorn Realtors Limited, told journalists that his client obtained a court order for the possession of a property located at 31a & b, Gafar Animashaun Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

He claimed that since the firm took possession, some mobile policemen have been trying to illegally reinstate the former owner into the property.

Fasetire said his client bought the said property from Sterling Bank Plc in 2015, but that all efforts to gain entry into the property has been continuously frustrated by the police “on the orders of someone within the top echelons of the police force”.

He explained that the former owners of the property, Tonique Oil Services Limited, lost its ownership after failing to pay back a N2billion loan facility it secured from Sterling Bank Plc.

He said his client subsequently decided to buy the said property, which was on sale from Sterling Bank Plc at a cost agreed by both parties.

Fasetire further noted that his client duly obtained a court order from a Lagos Magistrate’s Court for possession of the property, which was served on the occupant.

He said: “On August 18, we took possession of the property only for the Managing Director of Tonique Oil Service Limited, Tony Adejuigbe, to storm the property three days later with some policemen and some persons suspected to be thugs.

“We reported the matter to Maroko Police Station and he was subsequently arrested, but later released on bail.

“We were shocked when on Friday another set of Mobile police officers again stormed the property. We have been unable to know who sent them and what their mission is on the property. But we believe someone high up in the police is using them to undermine the court orders.

“Currently, some guards, who were mandated to secure the building by my client are being held hostage by the mobile policemen stationed in the building.”

He urged the IGP to investigate the matter to aviod a break down of law and order.

Alleged billionaire kidnap kingpin Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (a.k.a. Evans) has accused seven senior police officers and others on the Inspector-General (IG) Intelligence Response Team of extortion and sexual assault.

He alleged that the investigators forcibly obtained his cash in local and foreign currency, phones, wrist watches, jewelry, television, cars and trucks.

Evans claimed that his girlfriend, Amaka Offor, “was roundly sexually molested and abused by the above policemen of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team”.

In an October 13, 2017 petition written on his behalf by his counsel, Mr. Olukoya Ogungbeje, he called for “appropriate sanctions and dismissal of the culpable police officers and policemen”.

The lawyer claimed that the policemen “forcefully and corruptly extorted” N50 million from Evans and his wife was also forced to part with another N5 million.

A sum of $10,000 was also allegedly forcibly taken from him.

He listed other items to include a Brigade wristwatch, valued at $117; a $70,000 pendant cross; a necklace of  $25,000; a Virtu phone worth $30,000; a Virtu Signature phone valued at $17,000; and five pieces of Saphono Ruccu diamond rings worth $100,000.

Ogungbeje also accused the police of taking away from his apartment, his 85-inch Samsung television set, worth N6.5 million.

Other items were 25 Mack trucks; a Lexus 470 jeep; a Grand Cherokee jeep; a L400 Mitsubishi Bus and a gold-colour Toyota Highlander jeep.

The lawyer alleged that Evans’ girlfriend, one Amaka Offor, “was roundly sexually molested and abused by the police team”.

But Force spokesman CSP Moshood Jimoh and Head of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) ACP Abba Kyari  described Evan’s lawyer as  someone on deliberate misleading allegations of extortion against the police.

In separate interviews with The Nation yesterday, the two officers expressed disgust over Ogungbeje’s claim that IRT operatives had extorted expensive telephone handsets, vehicles, money and other valuables from his client.

Jimoh said it was unfortunate that a handful of people, who claim to be very knowledgeable easily resort to desperate name-calling against the police when officers and men are only carrying out their basic statutory duties in the interest of millions of citizens.

“As for the allegations being made against policemen, who are investigating the kidnap suspect, I can assure you that they are unfounded claims.

“That notwithstanding, our officers and men will neither be intimidated nor distracted from performing their statutory responsibilities,” he stated.

Kyari expressed grave disappointment, stressing that policemen, who risked lives and limbs to bring notorious criminals to justice, did not deserve such despicable treatment.

He said: “Several of the items that he (Ogungbeje) was referring to were items that we publicly displayed and these were given adequate media coverage across Nigeria.

“Besides, does it make sense for anyone to have expectations that the proceeds of grievous crimes like kidnapping or murder should remain in the hands of a suspect, who can use such resources to further his own ends?

“The telephone handsets that clearly linked the suspect to crimes and other relevant exhibits displayed before are still intact in custody; nobody is doing all the things being unfairly alleged.”

  • Attack on ex-IG: Police trail suspected armed robbers

Detectives have launched manhunt for suspected armed robbers, who made a botched attempt to enter the home of a former Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Ahmadu Coomasie.

The police said its preliminary findings pointed to a case of armed robbery and not assassination attempt.

But it, however, asked its detectives to leave all clues open in order to track down the suspects.

The Katsina State Police Command released the details of how the robbery suspects were repelled, leading to the killing of Sgt. Musa Ibrahim attached to 27 Police Mobile Squadron in Katsina.

A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Preliminary investigation so far pointed to the case of armed robbery, which was repelled by policemen on guard at the residence.

“So far, we are on the trail of the suspects and we are confident that we will arrest these culprits as soon as possible.”

But the Katsina State Police Command, through its spokesman, DSP Gambo Isah, in a statement, said: “On 14/10/2017 at about 20:00hrs, two armed hoodlums riding on a motorbike attacked mobile policemen posted on guard duty at the residence of former IGP Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmadu Coomasie, the Sardaunan Katsina and Chairman, Arewa Consultative Forum.

“The hoodlums met a stiff resistance from the mobile policemen, who prevented them from getting access into the residence.  However, during the gun duel, one Force Number 264505 Sgt Musa Ibrahim attached to 27 police mobile squadron, Katsina, paid the supreme sacrifice and gallantly lost his life during the encounter.

“Police patrols teams led by the Commissioner of Police BD Gwana arrived at the scene but the hoodlums have already escaped through the dark alleys.  A stray bullet also met one Force Number 270124 Cpl Shitu Maikudi attached to 27 police mobile squadron on his leg, who was coming out of the residence in mufti. He was rushed to General Hospital Katsina for treatment.

“Eighteen empty shells of expended ammunition were recovered at the scene. The command is assiduously making efforts to arrest the fleeing hoodlums and recover their operational arms.

“Citizens are hereby assured to go about their lawful business without any fear as the command is on top of the situation.”
