    ‘Evans’ detention was justifiable’

•‘Interpol probing suspects’ activities in Ghana, South Africa’

The rate of kidnapping has dropped following the arrest of Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (a.k.a Evans), police said at the weekend.

Police spokesman Moshood Jimoh, who spoke with The Nation in Abuja, said the International Police (Interpol) was investigating  Evans’ activities.

He said: “When we paraded him (Evans) in Lagos, I told the public that the arrest of Evans marked the beginning of the end for kidnapping.

“Since that day, the rate of kidnapping has seriously gone down and that shows that we were able to hit the right target.

“As for keeping him (in custody), we have been able to secure three months’ remand warrant from the Federal High Court, Abuja to enable us to round off our investigations.

“At present, the contacts and crimes he committed in other countries, including Ghana and South Africa, are of interest.

“We have series of complaints that border on murder, several kidnappings and armed robberies against him and these are all capital offences that are not bailable at the level of the police.

“They are not even ordinarily bailable in the courts.”

Jimoh said Evans’ detention was justifiable and there would be no need to rush his case and make mistakes that would disappoint Nigerians.

“In his alleged offences, the lives of Nigerians were at stake and we must be able to get everything to ensure that we don’t lose the case in the courts.

“For any sensible police force, it won’t be appropriate to rush to court in a complex case like this because the investigation is a scientific approach to actually situate a suspect at the scene of a crime and convince the court that this is the person that did this and that.

“That is why it is important that we are meticulous in putting details together and explaining how someone committed atrocities such that at the end of the day, Nigerians will be happy with us if the suspect is convicted of all the offences he committed alongside other members of his gang.

“Nigerians will not be happy with us if we rush to court and lose the case on mere technicalities.

“We are mindful of that as well as his fundamental human rights. That is why we approached the courts for a three-month remand warrant to keep him in police custody,” Jimoh explained.

He stated that Nigeria’s membership of Interpol and its platform’s responsibilities necessitate active collaboration on the Evans case and the investigation of associated issues.

“We are very active on the platform of Interpol. If you can recall, it was revealed that he (Evans) has a Ghanaian international passport and the passport is still very valid.

“There are clear indications of the level of criminality that goes across the border.

“So, we will do what is just in that circumstance and after completing investigations, we will be able to know where we will share experience and ideas with various jurisdictions involved and we will all know how to deal with the matter.

“Yes, Interpol is already fully involved and we are all out to do a thorough job and it is in the interest of the public because such high-level suspects should not continue walking the streets and committing such atrocities.

“We hope to ensure that the cause of justice is served at the end of the day,” Jimoh said.

  • Police arrest 100 as three more ‘Badoo members’ are killed

Police arrest 100 as three more ‘Badoo members’ are killed

Three more suspected members of the notorious Badoo cult fell yesterday as angry Ikorodu residents led by the local vigilante group, Onyabo, went after the gang.

The police have confirmed the arrest of 100 suspected Badoo members during a raid in Ikorodu at the weekend.

The suspects were burnt to death in their Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) on Oju-Emuren Street, Odogunyan.

They were said to be dressed in black suits.

The deceased were said to have been found with three big grinding stones, charms and oil.

They were lynched when they could not explain what they were doing with the items.

The deceased, it was gathered, claimed they were on their way to tow a broken down vehicle when they were caught.

A resident said: “The men looked like bouncers and they wore black suits. Their vehicle was stopped by Onyabo for interrogation and they said they were going to tow a broken down vehicle.

“When a search was conducted on their SUV, three grinding stones, oil and charms were found. They could not explain what they were doing with them. Onyabo called residents out and that was how the suspects were instantly roasted alive.”

Their death is the latest in the series of killings of suspected Badoo cultists in the past one week.

Ten persons have so far been killed in different areas of Ikorodu for allegedly being Badoo members.

The police and other security agencies could not rescue the suspects as the mob stoned them.

Yesterday’s killings sparked an outrage as many said the residents might be killing innocent people.

Hameed Sanni said: “I cannot understand the way our people are handling the situation of Badoo.  Honestly, they are allowing their emotions to betray their judgment. Our actions towards judgment are barbaric. How can you say you are an innocent person and you act in this manner? I couldn’t stand this (the killing). Oh my goodness! We have a long way to go; believe me. I am not against apprehending them, but hand them over to the relevant authority. We should not take laws into our hands because it doesn’t resolve anything.”

Also yesterday, the police said over 100 persons were arrested in a raid on Ikorodu at the weekend.

Led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of Operations, Edgal Imohinmi, Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives, Onyabo and Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) members swept Igbogbo/Bayeku, Ibeshe, Ijede and Imota for Badoo cultists.

The police, it was learnt, also met with traditional rulers, residents and vigilante members on the need to shun mob justice.

The command’s spokesperson, Olarinde Famous–Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of police (ASP), said 40 police and RRS vehicles were deployed in the operation.

He said: “We can confirm the arrest of 100 suspected members of the dreaded cult group, Badoo and they are helping with ongoing investigation into the activities of the gang.

“Government is on top of the situation and we like to use this medium to caution the people to desist from jungle justice.

“We also like to assure residents that they are free to go about their normal activities without let or hindrance, as the police and other security agencies in the state are poised to make the state uncomfortable and hot for criminal elements to perpetrate their nefarious activities,” Famous–Cole said.

A source said formation indicated that Badoo members usually sold the handkerchiefs they wiped their victims blood with to prominent people at N500,000 each.

“We heard they sell one handkerchief containing the blood of their victims for N500,000 to highly placed Nigerians. Police should investigate and put an end to this so that residents will not vacate Ikorodu,” he said.

An OPC member, Abiodun Akerejola alias Ojolebua, said the raid, followed a closed-door stakeholders meeting.

He said: “The issue of Badoo and other cult activities in Ikorodu and environs should give everyone concern, not only the police. We do not know the next family or person they might attack. We appreciate Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his support and assistance.”

The exercise was a follow up to a meeting which the National Coordinator of Odua Peoples’ Congress, Chief Gani Adams and Onyabo leaders held with security chiefs in the State last Friday.

Confirming the operation, Public Relations Officer of Lagos State Police Command, ASP Olarinde Famous–Cole said about 40 police and RRS vehicles were used for the operation, adding that the exercise was part of the ongoing efforts to rid the State of the activities of the dreaded cult group.

Police parade vigilance member for alleged ritual killing

The Police in Anambra State yesterday paraded a vigilance group member alleged to have killed an unidentified person for ritual purposes.

Parading the suspect in Awka, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Garba Umar, alleged that the suspect later buried the remains of the victim in a shallow grave.

The alleged offence was committed on the night of June 22, 2017 on the premises of a beer distributor at Ekwulobia in Aguata Local Government Area.

“The suspect buried the corpse in a shallow grave within the premises and failed to report the incident to anyone including his employer and co-workers,” Umar said.

According to him, on June 26, 2017, workers who perceived an offensive odour within the premises searched and uncovered an unusual sight at a portion of the premises.

Umar said workers confronted the suspect with their findings and forced him to dig out the area after he denied knowledge of what was in the ground.

“He did and confessed to killing an intruder into the premises on the night of June 22.

“Preliminary investigation revealed the suspect beheaded the corpse, burnt it, before burying it in the shallow grave.

“The suspect is helping in the investigation as ritual killing is suspected,” Umar added.

He said items including a pump action, revolver gun, cell phones, SIM cards, blood-soaked blanket and wrapper, among others were recovered from the suspect, who would be charged to court.

The police commissioner said that his administration owed the people of the state a duty of ensuring a peaceful and crime-free society; and was determined to make the state a no-go-area for criminals.

Umar said the command had put in place intelligence-led policing and crime prevention strategies to clamp down on criminals.

  • The police is your friend… we are the friends of the police!

The first time you saw the mounted signboard with the slogan – The Police Is Your Friend – I know exactly how you felt, yes (!!)  But for the Princess’ Files today, I will enjoin you to be friends to the police, with special reference to the officers I will mention here whose diligence, gallantry and self-sacrificing action sets them apart.

I have always had special admiration for the professionalism of three notable policemen.

    (1)         Mr. Frank Odita for his deep love for people’s safety.  Even after retirement he has kept a long-running television program, teaching on how to remain safety conscious at all times.

    (2)         U. Usen of blessed memory, and the former Commandant of the Police Staff College Jos.  His rules were across board, no exceptions for anyone.  In his household, the latest time for his young sons to be out was 10.00p.m, he had one of his sons kept in the guardroom of the college overnight for flouting the cut-off time.  Another son is now a serving policeman!

    (3)         Mr. Mike Okiro.  A lover of peoples security, and a performer.  He was posted to Lagos as Police Commissioner when armed robbery there was at an all-time high.  On his arrival then, he announced that he would catch a certain, dreaded armed robber who had terrorized the entire city.  And in no time, Okirobecame a hero in Lagos when he caught the said young man and his gang – behold the man was the son of a retired policeman.  Okiro’s devotion to the job made him saw him rise to the position of Inspector-General of Police, and one of his sons is now a cop.

Okiro is very concerned about the security of the populace, and his easy-to-read books on safety give readers practical tips on how to remain safe, vigilant and alert.

Today though, I want to pay tribute to two gallant policemen, one in England, one in Nigeria, who have put the safety of the public first – without a thought to their own lives.

This story in Part 1 is all about the bravery of one British Police Officer P.C. Wayne Marques, who, virtually unarmed, took on a dangerous set of terrorists:

London is said to be one of the very few capitals in the world whose policemen are essentially unarmed.  One of their officers is Police Constable Wayne Marques, a British Transport Police.  His instant response to calls for help from the public on the night of Saturday, June 3, 2017 had him singlehandedly tackling around terrorists, just near the London Bridge terror scene, quite unexpectedly.

Marques rushed to the scene armed only with the legendary baton of the British Police upon receiving reports of stabbings in Borough Market Area close to London Bridge.  Marques had no idea that the men he was tackling that night were terrorists.  Marques was one of the first on the scene, minutes after 10.00pm, and on witnessing two men stabbing one person, he used his baton and brought one of the attackers down.

In a radio interview later, he said he then just swung his baton and brought down the second man whose knife was dangerously close. Then he felt a sensation in his eye before a seeming blackout – but kept telling himself – Don’t go Down.  By then, he had been stabbed in the face enough to temporarily stop his vision in one eye.

Marques still did not surrender; he made to chase after the third terrorist, only to find that his life just would not move.  It was then he discovered that the first man had managed to get up and stab him in the leg in an attempt to bring the cop down.

The three attackers stood and faced him shoulder to shoulder.  It was only then he realized they were terrorists as they started their now famous chant.  Marques was stabbed again, in the hand before the men turned and continued their killing spree, attacking other people around.  Then, minutes later, the terrorists, YoussefZaghba, KhuramBult and RachidRaduane were shot dead by police marksmen who arrived the scene.

Sadly by then, the terrorists had killed eight innocent people and wounded several others.  Over in nearby London Bridge terrorists there have killed seven people and injured forty-eight others just minutes earlier.

Mercifully now, after series of operations, Marques has regained sight in his right eye, but has lost feeling in the right side of his head where his nerves were severed.  For now he cannot walk unaided.  Marques, an instant hero, says he all he wanted to do was to save peoples’ lives.

…Part 2 is the story of the Nigerian Mobile Policeman Sergeant ChukwudiIboko who lost his life bravely tackling the gang of bank robbers (of the trending CCTV footage).

    Police apologize to assaulted journalist

The Kaduna State Police Command has apologized to Ibraheema Yakubu, the journalist that was assaulted by police officers during a clash between Shiites and members of a Kaduna community.

Yakubu, who was arrested while covering a peaceful procession by the Shiites in Kaduna penultimate Friday, said he was beaten and slapped by police officers, before he was thrown into detention.

The journalist, who reports for the Hausa service of the German Deutsche Welle, DW radio, was arrested as he covered a scene in which locals attacked the Shiites and tried to force them to disperse.

At least two people were injured in the attack, witnesses said, while authorities said 10 people were arrested.

Yakubu was released on bail to officials of the Kaduna council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) at about 7:30 p.m. six hours after his arrest by the police.

He returned to the police station on Wednesday as directed.

On Thursday, the state Commissioner of Police, Agyole Abeh, made a verbal apology on behalf of the command to Yakubu.

Evans seeks N300m damages from police

Suspected billionaire  kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike  aka Evans, has again sued the Inspector General of Police, and three others before a Federal High Court in Lagos over his alleged illegal detention.

Other respondents in the new suit are the Nigeria Police Force, the Commissioner of Police Lagos State and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command.

In the new suit filed yesterday by his counsel, Olukoya Ogubgbeje, through an originating summon, marked FHC/L/CS/1012/ 2017, Evans is claiming N300m as general and exemplary damages against the police for what he termed ‘ illegal detention and unconstitutional media trial”.

In an affidavit deposed to by his father, Mr Stephen Onwuamadike, in support of the suit,  he averred that the applicant has been subjected to media trial without any court order by the respondents.

Onwuamadike further averred that the media trial and news orchestrated by the respondents have continued to generate reactions in both print and electronic media without his son being afforded fair hearing before a court of law.

Evans argued that his continued detention by the respondents since June 10, without a charge, or release on bail, is an infringement on his fundamental rights.

Evans  is seeking a declaration that his continued detention since June 10 without arraignment, violates his fundamental rights as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution.

He is also seeking a declaration that his parade on June 11 before journalists in Lagos, at the Lagos Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja, without any court order, is unconstitutional and illegal.

He prayed the court for an order, compelling the respondents to immediately arraign him before a law court, or release him from custody forthwith.

‘Evans’’ is also seeking an order, compelling the respondents to jointly and severally, pay him the sum of N300m as exemplary damages for illegal detention and alleged harm caused by the alleged media trial.

The suspect is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the respondents from further arresting, detaining, harassing, investigating or inviting him in relation to the facts of his case.

He is also seeking further orders as the court may deem fit, to make in the circumstances.

No date has been fixed for hearing in his latest suit.

Evans contended that his continued detention by the respondents since June 10, without a charge, or release on bail, is an infringement on his fundamental rights.

In his new suit also marked FHC/L/CS/1012/ 2017 and with the same persons as respondents, the applicant is seeking a declaration that his continued detention since June 10 without arraignment, violates his fundamental rights as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution.
