  • Police avert crisis in community

TO prevent the breakdown of law and order in the ancient town of Igboye land in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State, the police have stopped the annual sacrifice to the ancestors of the primordial town till further notice.

Last Thursday, some persons (names withheld) suspected to be sympathetic to the embattled traditional ruler of the town, Michael Onakoya, had attempted to offer sacrifices to the ancestors (Osi Ilu) of the town at the shrine, claiming to be acting on divination by an oracle.

It was gathered that these persons cleared the bush surrounding the shrine and hired tents, chairs and bought a goat with which to make the sacrifice.

The attempt to make the sacrifice came days after the monarch returned to the community following reprieve granted him by the Lagos State government last month.

The monarch, who came back to the community as “an ordinary citizen”, it was learnt, has since kept a low profile as part of the conditions laid down by the government for his return, pending final determination of various cases in court.

The Lagos State government, had earlier on May 17, last year, banished Oba Onakoya from Igboye, following two judgments by Justice Habib Abiru in October, 2008 and Justice Iyabo Kasali in April last year deposing Onakoya as the Orijeru of Igboye land.

The deposition letter signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sanuth J.A.B., ordered the monarch to stop parading himself “as the Orijeru of Igboye with immediate effect until another judgment setting the two aside is obtained.

“I am to also advise you to stay away from the community in order to prevent any breakdown of law and order until the situation is reversed.”

However, before the sacrifice could commence, youths of the community, in retaliation, were said to have swooped on the shrine, stopped the ceremony and chased away the people they met there.

It was gathered that they insisted that no sacrifice would be allowed to take place at the shrine until there is a substantive king on the throne, more so that the community has not selected and installed a new Olisa after the death of Chief Fatai Mustapha.

Investigation, however, revealed that those sympathetic to the monarch had earlier in March, this year, prevented some members of the community from celebrating Kilajolu Festival spear-headed by one of the ruling houses and during which they normally make offerings to their ancestors.

It was learnt that a breakdown of law and order was prevented in the community following the intervention of Alara of Ilara, Oba A.A. Adesanya and the police.

As a result of the new development, one Alhaji Rasaki Azeez and the youths’ leader (Olori Odo), Mr Toyin Sangosanya, leading some of the youth of the community, lodged a formal complaint at the office of the Department of State Security Services (DSS) and the Divisional Police Station at Oke Oyinbo, Epe.

During an eventual meeting with the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), Mrs Akinbo, the monarch reportedly insisted on having nothing to do with the attempt to offer sacrifices in the community.

The DCO, thereafter, ordered that no sacrifice, under any guise, should hold in the community unless it has the support and approval of all the four ruling houses and until after the Muslim fasting season.

Oba Onakoya did not pick his phone when contacted on his GSM line for comment on the matter.

Head of the ruling houses (Olori Ebi Gbogbogbo) and also Head of Osikadewa Ruling House, Chief Safiriyu Bakare, who also confirmed the development, insisted that there is a reigning king in the town.

Chief Bakare said the monarch left the town a year ago to allow peace to reign.

He insisted that the monarch has nothing to do with the attempt to offer sacrifice to their ancestors at the shrine but that a new date would be fixed after the Ramadan for the conduct of the sacrifice.

Acting Head of the Ewade Ruling House and Baba Adinni of Igboye and Odoyangusen, Alhaji Mikhail Kadiri confirmed the events in the town. He alleged that those sympathetic to the embattled monarch breached agreement reached at the police station in March that no family should make any sacrifice until there is a king on the throne.

“If at all it must hold in the future, it must be subject to the agreement of the four ruling houses on equal terms”, he said, adding “any meeting to which Ewade Ruling House, for instance, is not validly invited on equal terms cannot be in the interest of Igboye land and would not be acceptable”.

When contacted for comment on the matter, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr Ajimuda Olatunji also said   the issue in Igboye land is being handled at the level of the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja.

  • Police name London terrorists

    Police name London terrorists

The police yesterday named two of the men who carried out Saturday night’s terror attack in London.

Scotland Yard said Pakistan-born Khuram Butt, 27, from Barking, east London was known to police and MI5 but there was no intelligence to suggest an attack.

The other attacker was Rachid Redouane, 30, from Barking, who police said claimed to be Moroccan-Libyan.

The pair and one other man were shot dead by police after killing seven people and injuring 48.

They drove a hired van into pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing people in the area around Borough Market.

A vigil was held at Potters Field Park near London Bridge also yesterday to remember the victims.

Thirty six people remained in hospital, with 18 in a critical condition

Assistant Commander Mark Rowley said: “Inquiries are ongoing to confirm the identity of their accomplice.”

He said the investigation into Butt began two years ago but “there was no intelligence to suggest that this attack was being planned and the investigation had been prioritised accordingly”.

He added: “Work is ongoing to understand more about them, their connections and whether they were assisted or supported by anyone else.”

Butt once featured in a Channel 4 documentary about Islamist extremists with links to the jailed preacher Anjem Choudary.

The attacker, who had at least two older siblings, can be seen in last year’s TV documentary arguing with police officers in the street.

An online CV seen by the BBC shows that he got an NVQ Level 2 In business administration and went on to work in an administrative role for a company called Auriga Holdings based in East Ham which manages Kentucky Fried Chicken outlets.

He had also worked in a customer services role for Transport for London and was the sole director of a now-dissolved company called Kool Kosmetics.

The vigil began as a sombre and quiet gathering under the trees in Potters Field Park, where people stood in quiet contemplation looking out over the Thames.

So many did not have the words to describe how they were feeling but spoke of their desire to stand together with others and show love.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s speech roused the quiet crowd of thousands into hearty applause of agreement when he spoke of his disgust of – and defiance at – the horror of Saturday’s events.

After a minute’s silence, many went forward to lay flowers beneath the flagpoles of City Hall and lingered to speak with one another.

It was a dignified show of solidarity and strength in the face of fear and hate.

Counter terrorism police have made two fresh raids on addresses in east London in connection with Saturday’s deadly terror attack in London.

The Metropolitan Police said officers entered properties in Newham and Barking at 4.15am on Monday and “a number” of people had been detained.

Searches were continuing at both addresses, police added.

Residents reported hearing “loud flash bangs and gunshots” in the early hours of Monday morning.

Terrorists brought carnage to the streets of Britain for the second time in as many weeks, killing seven and leaving 21 fighting for their lives.

Pedestrians were mowed down by a van on London Bridge before attackers stabbed a police officer and revellers around Borough Market with 12-inch knives.

One of the attackers shouted “this is for Allah” as he knifed a man near a pub – while the Islamic State militant group claimed its fighters carried out the attack.

BBC home affairs correspondent Dominic Casciani said two people in Barking raised concerns about him.

One man called the anti-terrorism hotline in 2015, while a woman went to the local police station because she was scared Butt was trying to radicalise her children.

Security planners made him a lower priority than other targets because of lack of information that he was involved in attack-planning, the correspondent said.

Sources in Dublin said Redouane was understood to have been carrying an identification card issued in the Republic of Ireland when he was shot dead, the Press Association reported.

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said he was not a member of a “small group” being monitored by Irish police for radicalisation.

Six women and four men arrested by police after the attack are still being questioned, police said.

  • Police arrests council chairman, others over council secretary murder

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested the transition chairman of Ukanafun Local Government Area, Mr. Abasiono Udomfu and three others over the killing of the council’s secretary, Mr. Ime Atakpa.

An aide to the chairman, Mr. Akaninyene Ibout, was said to have been arrested on Wednesday after the visit of the wife of the Akwa Ibom State governor, Mrs. Martha Emmanuel to inaugurate building for widows on Tuesday.

A sister to Atakpa’s wife, who did not want her name in print, told newsmen  in Uyo yesterday that Udomfu, during Emmanuel’s visit, raised up his hands saying: “God knows that my hands are clean concerning the murder of the LG secretary.”

She said that after the chairman had made the declaration, Ibout also said that his hands were clean and that he did not have anything to do with the killing of the late LG secretary.

It was learnt that the police intelligence who were in the area at the time they were making the statements, arrested Ibout on Wednesday.

He was said to have named the chairman and two other people of involvement in the alleged murder of the council secretary.

Our correspondent gathered that Udomfu had made attempts to bribe the policemen that arrested him, asking them not to disgrace him.

The two other people were said to have been arrested from Port Harcourt, Rivers State. They were said to have confessed to the police that Udomfu gave them N300,000 to kill the LG secretary.

On April 16, 2017, four unidentified gunmen shot and killed Atakpa.  He was said to have been shot when he was in his farm, an Integrated Farming scheme, which is a boys’ quarter in his house in Ukanafun on that date.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Chukwu Ikechukwu, who confirmed the arrest, explained that all the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

He said: “Investigation is on and soon as we conclude it, the matter will be charged to court.”

  • FG vows to prosecute purveyors of fake news

FG vows to prosecute purveyors of fake news

The Federal Government on Sunday said that it will not relent until it has exposed those behind the fake news phenomenon in the country and bring them to justice.

In a statement in Abuja, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said that those behind the fake news had the intention of destabilising the polity and causing disunity among the country’s various ethnic and religious groups.

The statement was signed by Mr Segun Adeyemi, the Special Adviser to the Minister.

The minister urged Nigerians to be extra vigilant in view of the worsening cases of fake news being spread by the unscrupulous persons.

Mohammed noted that over the weekend alone, several major cases of fake news were recorded, each of them capable of causing panic, triggering chaos or setting one group against the other.

He said that a gory video of a blast that occurred many years ago was being circulated along with the false news of a bomb blast in Abuja, while news of a non-existent bomb blast in Lagos was also widely circulated.

He said the Police had however debunked the fake news.

Mohammed said the latest strategy being employed by the purveyors of fake news was to attribute to top government officials, improbable statements capable of destabilising the polity, causing tension and threatening the country’s unity.

”This is why we are appealing to Nigerians not to ever engage in a knee-jerk reaction to any news, and to subject every information to a very serious scrutiny by checking with security agencies and government spokespersons,” he said.

The Minister described the fake news phenomenon as ‘the scourge of our times’ noting that it would “probably get worse in the months ahead”

He, therefore, called on all Nigerians to be very vigilant so that fake news purveyors do not succeed in their quest to sow the seeds of chaos and confusion.

He also appealed to the traditional media, which has a reputation to protect, to join the campaign against the purveyors of fake news.(NAN)

Video of alleged bomb blast in Lagos false – Police

The Lagos State Police Command has allayed the fears of a bomb blast in Oshodi.

The State Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous- Cole in a statement said reports being circulated on social media in respect of the security situation at Mafoluku-Oshidi and environs is false.

” Oshodi is relatively calm and not “boiling as being erroneously peddled. It is mischief and callousness to put people in fear.

” Video footage being circulated to back the false information is that of the bomb incident around Banex Plaza, Abuja in 2014.

Lagos and other Security Agencies to ensure safety and security of life and properties,” Famous- Cole stated.

  • Police arrest suspected militants, foil plot to rob five banks

Police arrest suspected militants, foil plot to rob five banks

Attempts by suspected militants to attack several commercial banks in Lagos have been foiled by the Inspector General of Police’ (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

This is just as four suspected members of the gang of notorious kidnapper, America, and a guard attached to one of the banks were arrested at Ajah and Ikorodu areas of the state.

The banks targeted, the police said, were Zenith and First City Monument Bank (FCMB) in Lekki, as well as FCMB, Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB) and Keystone Bank in Ajah.

It was gathered that the gang was behind Thursday last week’s abduction of six pupils of the Lagos State Model College, Igbonla.

According to the police, Abiodun Olaroye (Gbeleju), 38, Ebipatgh Tuwei (Segun), 47, Benjamin Powei (Ben), 42, Samuel Chinedu (Hitman), 30, and Samuel Innocent Ikechukwu (IK), 33, were arrested on Tuesday.

It was gathered that the suspects were picked up following credible intelligence and they confessed that plans had been perfected to attack five banks in the state.

The police said Tuwei confessed to have participated in the ambush that killed four policemen and an Army Captain.

Their arrest, the police said, followed days of unrelenting tracking by the IRT.

The five militants were said to have been sent by America, their leader, from the creek to survey the banks and hire two operational buses that would be used to convey them to and fro the river banks in the course of the attack.

It was gathered that the banks were marked because of their proximity to river banks.

“All the suspects arrested confessed to the planned bank robberies and confirmed that they were sent by their boss in the creek, America, to survey the five banks together with the guard who tipped the militants off.

“They also said America fixed Wednesday June 1, for the attack, but his boys were arrested before then. The suspects are cooperating with detectives in the Investigation. Serious efforts to arrest the gang leader, other members and rescue the school children, the police said, were in progress.

Tuwei, a suspected member of the deadly gang, however, said he was sleeping in another of the suspects’ house when he heard that the gang, led by America, had shot an Army captain and four policemen in Isawo area of Ikorodu, Lagos.

Forty-seven-year-old Segun Tuwei, however, said he did not know that the shot soldier and police officers died until he and other members of the gang heard about it from the news media after an exchange of gunfire the gang had with some securitymen.

A police source said that following the death of the Army captain and police officers, the Inspector General of Police, Idris Mohammed, immediately directed the officer in charge of his intelligence Response Team (IRT), Abba Kyari, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), to fish out the members of the gang responsible for the heinous crime.

They went into action immediately and their effort resulted in the killing of America’s second in command simply addressed as OC.

A member of the gang named Benjamin was said to have escaped when the IRT operatives arrived his house, but his wife was arrested.

From his hideout, Benjamin was said to have sent Segun Tuwei, a suspected member of the gang, to the police station to secure his wife’s bail.

The police was said to have honoured his request for bail, which later helped them to arrest Benjamin.

The suspects revealed that the gang used to set ablaze any car or bus it used for operation to avoid the vehicles being traced to them.

They also admitted being in possession of a Land Rover SUV belonging to a member of the gang named Saheed.

Confessing his role in the gang, Tuwei said: “There is no need to lie. It has happened and it has happened. We are members of the gang that is led by America. He is our gang leader. They killed the captain and the police officers in an exchange of gunfire, but I did not follow him to the operation in which an army captain and four police officers died. That happened at Isawo area of Ikorodu.

“It was America that always selected the members of the gang that would go for particular operations as they required high level intelligence, smartness, time consciousness and bravery.

“I was sleeping in Ben’s (Benjamin’s) house when it happened. They operated from Ikorodu to Maridon that night.

“In the morning, I ran to Ojota. That was where one of our members said they had gone to kill some military and police people at Isawo. They said an army captain was among the soldiers they shot dead. We heard that they killed a Police Inspector also.

Continuing, Segun said: “I am from Arogbo village, Ondo State. I am married with four children. I was doing Timber Work at Itoko village around Epe Road. The village is after Agbowa town. I live there with members of my family.

“I don’t follow them to kidnap people. My role is to do surveillance with Abbey and Ben. If we wanted to rob a bank, the three of us would first go and survey the bank. After we had done our surveillance work, America and others would go for the operation, robbing the bank of any money they found there. “Once we had followed the gang up to waterside, America and other members would climb to the bank. “I was arrested in my shop at Itokin where I sell local gin called ogogoro on May 13, 2017, being a Saturday.

They just called me on the phone. It was the only surveillance I had helped them to do since I joined the gang.” Benjamin on his part also confessed to being a member of America’s deadly robbery gang. He said: “We robbed banks and individuals, but I did not follow them to the operation on that fateful day they killed an army captain and four police officers. It was America and others who exchanged fire with the military and police. America used pump action riffle to kill them. “I am from Biagbini village in Eseodo Local Government Area, Ondo State. I used to do fishing and sand dredging. I am married with four children. “I wanted to marry the second wife but suspended it because I had no enough money, and that was what pushed me into looking for money that way.

“I met OC when we were doing oil bunkering at Maridu, Abule Oba. The Navy people came and took over Magidun and I moved inside the creek where we were fishing. “One day, Abbey came and told me that there was work. I told America and he said I should follow them to Isawo to kidnap a woman. “I was given N20,000 and Abbey was given N10,000. We kept the woman in Ajegunle creek until we released her. America used to stay at Ore. The woman’s husband paid N3,000 000 before she was released. There used to be six of us in the gang. Four of us used to carry pump action guns and AK 47 rifles. “From the second operation, I got N100,000. America is our leader and he carries pump action rifle.

It was Abbey who brought the job. He was given N80,000 to survey the place before she was kidnapped. We used to feed her with garri, noodles, bread and egusi soup. “America employed a cook. It is the victim that dictates what he or she wants to eat or drink. We treat victims like kings and queens. “The second operation, which was bank robbery, failed and it led to our arrest. They first arrested Abbey and he deceived me on the phone. I called America and he said he had sent Samuel to go and show us where the bank is.” In his own confession, Olaroye said he was a native of Okitipupa in Ondo State. He said: “I am single. I was in Apapa, Lagos selling tokunbo (fairly used) fridge before I joined the gang. I live in Abutoyo Ikorodu. I have been in this business since 2005.

“I was arrested on the May 13 while coming back from Ajah. We went to check the bank on May 12. My work is to carry out a surveillance on people to be kidnapped or banks to be robbed. We kidnapped the wife of a naval officer who seized our fuel. They paid N3.4 million ransom and I got N80, 000.” Another member, Chinedu, said: “I am from Apoma after Umunede, Delta State. I was doing poultry work in Ekpoma. “When I came to Lagos, I had nothing doing. I met one Phillip who asked me to follow him to Marobo to do fishing. But instead of teaching me how to fish, he taught me how to rob and kidnap people.

“There, he told me that America was their leader. America gave me N14,000 to go to Lagos to meet Ben. He said Ben would take me to a bank where he would deposit N5,000. That was how I followed them for bank robbery. I am married with two children.” Ikechukwu said: “I am from Ikumano Local Government Area, Abia State, and I am married with a child. “I do security work in Tana Security Company at Lake side, Ibeju Lekki. It was Abbey that lured me to join the gang. My role is to show them the bank to rob. I showed them First Bank and Zenith”.

Land grabbing: Family takes case to lawmakers, police

The Imran Asade family of Akasun Village in the Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State has sent a Save-Our-Soul (SOS) petition to the Ogun State House of Assembly over their expulsion from the village by land grabbers in the area seven years ago.

In a petition written by the solicitor to the family, Mr Tunji Busari, dated May 22 and sent to the Chairman, House Committee on Land and Housing, Hon O. Adebiyi, a copy of which was sent to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, stated that the land grabbers challenging the family over their land in the village sent out thugs against them after their victory at the Supreme Court.

According to Busari, “the distruption of public peace started when our clients were about reaping the fruits of the judgment of the Supreme Court dated 18th December, 2009 in suit no Sc/129/2005 in favour of the Asade descendants’ family. All efforts to enforce the said judgment had been vehemently resisted by the aforementioned culprits”.

The culprits, he stated, resorted to violence when they failed woefully in their bid to take over the village from the Asade family from the customary court to the Supreme Court.

A day after the Supreme Court judgment in favour of the Asade family, it was stated, the culprits went on the rampage in the village with hoodlums and set the village ablaze causing breach of peace and stampede.

“Our client had to flee for their lives in order to escape being lynched to death by the blood thirsty vampires”, he said.

The violent activities of the hoodlums which went unabated, according to the petitioner, culminated in the kidnap and murder of  Kabiri Asade and Lateef Firinso who were both slaughtered like rams in the village on August 30th  and October 2nd 2010 respectively.

“All these led to the petition written to the Inspector General of Police who drafted some of his men to the embattled village, but to our clients’ chagrin, the culprits overwhelmed the police and hijacked the police vehicles and set them ablaze. This was published on Monday, September 20th, 2010 on page 16 of a national newspaper:”

The last attack, according to Busari, “which forced our clients to flee away from their village, their ancestral heritage and confirmed by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, was the heinous attack unleashed on our clients on 27th of October, 2010 when Akeem Ajani, a member of our clients’ family was seriously beaten into a state of coma and his hut set ablaze by the hoodlums while sleeping at night.”

Consequent upon this, the family solicitor noted that “our clients have been put in perpetual fear in their village as they had been chased out of the village totally and barred from reaping the benefits of the judgment of the Supreme Court confirming the Asade family as the land owner. The culprits had been going around boasting to kill our clients, if they should make an attempt to enforce the Supreme Court judgment handed over to them.

“We, therefore, implore your honourable offices to wade into this matter in all earnest to bring the culprits to book. They had been defying all the authorities and power of the law enforcement agents to the point that four vehicles of the police were burnt by the hoodlums and wounded the policemen who were admitted in hospitals for treatment of the wounds sustained during their lawful operations in the village”.

  • Police station torched as police, Navy clash in Calabar

Hoodlums suspected to be arsons have torched Akim Police Station on IBB Way in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

This followed the clash between the police and men of the Navy last Tuesday night.

A misunderstanding between a policeman and a Naval rating at the traffic light on IBB Way by the U. J. Esuene Stadium snowballed into a clash between the two security agencies.

Men of the Navy stormed the police station and shot severally at the structure.

Two policemen and a naval official were reportedly killed in the shootout.

    Several others sustained gunshot wounds.

Navy and police authorities did not open up on the number of casualty on either side.

It could not be immediately ascertained if any civilian was caught in the crossfire.

The police station was set ablaze, a police patrol vehicle and another vehicle inside the station were also burnt.

It was gathered that the police, fearing that the station might be razed, opened the cells for suspects in custody.

The walls of the police station were riddled with bullets.

The gun battle engulfed most of IBB Way – from the police station to the stadium, about half a kilometre away.

Residents said the gunfight lasted over three hours.

Vehicles and other property of people nearby were damaged.

The situation led to a Security Council meeting between Governor Ben Ayade and service commanders in the state.

The governor urged them to restore normalcy to the area.

He regretted the incident and promised to take responsibility for the damages on both sides.

Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory in Calabar, Commodore Sid Jubril, also regretted the incident.

He said the Navy intervened promptly to check the face-off from escalating.

The naval officer said the incident would be properly investigated and perpetrators sanctioned appropriately.

Jubril said the incident was not an indication that the police and Navy were rivals.

Police Commissioner Hafiz Inuwa said: “Yesterday’s (Tuesday’s) fracas has nothing to do with the relationship between the police and Navy. It was just a misunderstanding among our junior officers.

The police chief said the command quickly stepped in to address the situation.

He said: “All the service commanders in the state are one and active partners in progress, particularly on security and protection of life and property of the citizenry.”

Inuwa assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and the culprits brought to justice.
