Police officer feared dead as armed men attack check point

Two armed men operating on a motorcycle on Wednesday reportedly killed a police officer and made away with his AK47 riffle in Onitsha, Anambra.

The incident occurred barely three weeks after a police inspector was killed at a road block at Ugwunwasike round-about, Ogidi near Onitsha.

An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said Wednesday’s incident occurred at about 3.30pm at a check point near Nkpor junction.

The source said the hoodlums shot the policeman at close range, collected his riffle and sped-off, adding that the incident made people around and other police officers scamper for safety.

Efforts to get further details of the deceased and the mortuary where his body was deposited from the Ogidi Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr Mark Jafaru was not successful.

Jafaru said the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Nkeiru Nwode was in a better position to comment on the development.

However, when Nwode was contacted on phone, she said “I have not been brief on that; when I am fully briefed, I will brief you people.”

Wednesday’s incident makes it the third reported case of gun snatching around Onitsha this year by armed men with police officers being allegedly killed in the process. (NAN)

•They want my land, suspect alleges

The police in Lagos have arrested a 53-year-old pastor, Helen Akpopori for allegedly running an illegal orphanage.

Akpopori’s Ile Iwe, Meiran residence was raided on Monday after residents alleged that she had many malnourished children there.

She said her accusers sold one of her seven plots of land and encroached on another.

Akpopori said she adopted them because she loves children, adding that she took care of them from the money she generates as a pastor.

According to her, those she prayed for, who got breakthroughs usually came to her church for thanksgiving with cash and other gifts.

She said: “I usually pray for people who have one need or the other. When they see result, they come to me with their testimony and they also do donations. I do not ask them. They usually bring it on their own. It’s the money and gifts they bring that I used to take care of the children.

“But things have not been really good recently, that was why they looked malnourished and people started accusing me of running a baby factory. I do not run an orphanage, and I do not do baby factory. All my kids were legally adopted from the Ministry of Women Affairs in Asaba. I have shown them all my documents. They are legal. I have told them to verify. They are just accusing me because some people are interested in my land. They want to take my land from me.”

The Nation gathered that Akpopori was granted administrative bail at NAPTIP but was detained until she meets her bail condition.

A source at NAPTIP said investigation was ongoing.
