Ile-Ife crisis: Falana, OPC flay Police over parade of suspects

Activist-lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC) (Reformed) have berated the Police over the recent parade of the detained members of the Peace Corps of Nigeria and the 20 persons arrested in connection with the crisis in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

They described the parade of the suspects as illegal and a violation of their fundamental human rights.

Falana asked the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN) to order the arrest and prosecution of law enforcement personnel who engaged in the media parade of the suspects.

The OPC Reformed chided the governors in the Southwest for keeping silent over what it termed selective parade of the Yoruba.

Falana said the detained members of the Peace Corps and the Ile Ife 20 who have been paraded by the Police Authorities are at liberty to sue the Federal Government for aggravated and exemplary damages.

He recalled that when the police on February 26 conducted a media trial and parade of the detained 49 members of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, he condemned their action and pointed out the fact that “the parade of criminal suspects by the Police in the country is illegal and unconstitutional.”

The lawyer also recalled that shortly after the incident, there was a violent clash between the Yoruba and Hausa communities in Ile Ife, Osun State during which 20 suspects arrested by the police were paraded before the media in Abuja last week, noting that since the suspects are of Yoruba extraction the Afenifere has condemned the selective arrest by the police.

He noted that though the courts have repeatedly cautioned the law enforcement agencies to desist from parading criminal suspects before the media, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris has justified the illegal practice.

Falana, however, described the IGP’s defence as that “which smacks of official impunity and insensitivity. Notwithstanding that such media parade is prejudicial to the fundamental right of criminal suspects to fair hearing, the ruling class has not stopped it because it is part of the humiliation of lowly placed citizens. Hence, while it is not unusual to parade poor criminal suspects who are accused of stealing handsets whose value is less than N10,000 it is infra dignitate to parade rich and powerful criminal suspects who loot the treasury to the tune of several billions of Naira”.

The OPC Reformed, in a statement  by its President, Dare Adesope said the group will stage a massive protest through out the entire Southwest states and it’s going to commence on same day, same time and for same hours, if the Southwest governors fail to do something about the incident urgently.

“After waiting for this long without any governor in the Southwest saying anything, we found it very compelling to tell our governors in the western part of this country that we  are saying enough of this nefarious acts across the country by the Hausa/Fulanis.

“We of OPC ( Reformed) voted for PMB inspite of threats, oppression and intimidation from some angles. We voted him so as to bring about a positive change to the whole country and not to run a government that will favour a particular tribe at the expense of other tribes in the country.

“In as much as we appreciate what he is doing in the area of corruption, he should be fair to all other tribes as well.

The group challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to make his stand known concerning Ile Ife crisis where Yoruba were arrested to favour the Hausa/Fulani and taken to Abuja.

It raised four issues for which it requested the Federal Government to provide answer :

“Since the Fulani Herdsmen have been encroaching people’s land killing, rapping and destroying their farms, how many have been arrested and taken to Abuja? Who identified the Yoruba people that were arrested as suspects during the crisis?

“Is it fair to arrest only the Yorubas in a crisis that affected the Yoruba and the Hausa/Fulanis on our soil?. Is it constitutionally right to arrest them in Ife,Osun State and take them to Abuja?”

They asked the Federal Government to instruct the Police to transfer the suspects back to Osun State.

  • Boy beheads 72 years old woman over land

The Ogun State Police Command on Monday said it has arrested one Adeoye Ikugbayigbe for killing a 72year old woman, Funmilayo Shada, and severed her head.
Adeoye was said to have attacked the woman last March 17 in the farm, took her severed head but abandoned it on the way when he sighted the victim’s son.
The Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the arrest of Adeoye Ikugbayigbe followed a report by the son of the deceased Mr Ekundayo Shada who complained at Abigi Divisional Headquarters on 17th of March 2017 about the incident.
Giving account of the arrest of Adeoye, Oyeyemi stated that while the deceased’s son was on “his way to the farm at about 10am of the same day to meet his mother who has earlier gone to the farm, he met Adeoye Ikugbayigbe on the road holding a polythene bag.
“As soon as he sighted him, the suspect dropped the bag and ran into the bush. This aroused his suspicion and he quickly ran to check his mother but could not find her.
“He later came back to check the bag dropped by the suspect only for him to discover his mother severed head and her wrist in the said bag. He quickly reported to the case to the Police at about 1445hrs and immediately the DPO Abigi Division, SP Komolafe Omoniyi led detectives to the scene, combed the surrounding bush and finally got the suspect arrested.
“On interrogation, he confessed to the commission of the crime claiming that he has beden having running battle with the deceased over a portion of land. The severed head and the remains body of the deceased has been deposited in the mortuary while the cutlass he used has also been recovered,” Oyeyemi said.
According to the Police Image maker, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has directed that the suspect be transferred to the Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligent Department (SCIID) for further investigation.

  • Police discover grave of kidnapped chief security officer

Police discover grave of kidnapped chief security officer

The Enugu State Police Command has discovered a shallow grave where the remains of the former Chief Security Officer for Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State Ejiofor Enechi were buried.

Enechi was kidnapped by a syndicate in December, 2016.

Two top kingpins of the gang, Chijioke Ozor alias Earthquake and Anselem Ngana were arrested in February 2017 after a fierce gun battle with the police anti-kidnapping unit in Enugu.

The suspects were trailed to their hideout in the Aniocha forest nicknamed “Malaysian Forest” in Nimbo, Uzo-Uwani local council of Enugu State where kidnappers allegedly dumped their dead victims.

Spokesman of the Enugu State Police Command Superintendent Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the arrest of the two suspects and consequent discovery of Ejiofor’s remains in the forest to newsmen.

According to him, Ozor and Ngana were members of the banned Oda Nimbo Vigilante Group in the area involved in the kidnap of over 20 persons along the Nsukka- Uzo-Uwani – Onitsha road in recent times.

“They were among about 30 other members of the dreaded group who were being hunted by security agents following the kidnap and murder of Ejiofor, after his relations had paid N2 million ransom for his release.

“Ozor, who hails from Ugwunani village in Aku, Igboetiti Local Government Area of the state, led the police to the shallow grave in the forest where the remains were exhumed.

“Our detectives discovered the shallow grave and the shrine where the gangsters took their victims to at the Aniocha Forest which stretches to Eshi River in Kogi State.

“Apart from Ejiofor’s remains, they found several motorcycles of other victims who must have been killed by same members of the vigilante group.

“Each time they kidnapped their victims, they blamed the action on Fulani herdsmen but it is clear that the allegations against the Fulani herdsmen were diversionary.

“The forest is popularly known as Malaysia or Ugbo Ekwuru behind the Ugwuijoro Village in Nimbo.

“Ngana is from Akpama Nimbo and he was one of those in charge of monitoring Ejifor’s movements for other members of Oda Nimbo Vigilante group.

“Earthquake (Ozor) was among those who took him to the bush where he was allegedly murdered inside of the shrine.

  • Controversy over nursing mother allegedly brutalised by police

Controversy over nursing mother allegedly brutalised by police

There is outrage in Ekiti State following the alleged brutalisation of a nursing mother, Mrs. Toyin Adeyeye, by policemen at a checkpoint over her alleged refusal to offer them bribe. Interest groups and human rights bodies are furious with the police and the demand a high-powered probe into the incident. ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA reports.

MRS. Toyin Adeyeye never bargained for what he experienced on Friday, March 17 just ten days after she arrived from the United States of America where she was delivered of her baby.

After being successfully delivered of the baby, she was looking forward to returning home to nurse the baby and look after the business she left behind for about six months she stayed abroad.

On that fateful day (March 17), she went to the market with her brother, Adeniyi Dada, on the wheels with the new born baby, Heritage. Little did they know that they would pass the night inside a dingy cell in a police station away from the comfort of their home.

    Capture

Not only did they sleep in detention on that day, they allegedly received the beatings of their lives from those who are supposed to protect them from criminals and were feasted upon by ‘appreciative’ mosquitoes.

They were accosted by a team of policemen who mounted a checkpoint in front of Ekiti Parapo Square otherwise known as the Pavilion, and demanded for vehicle documents as well as driver’s licence which were promptly supplied and were found to be valid.

Interestingly, the incident happened few meters away from the official residence of the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abdullahi Chafe.

The police impounded the black Kia Picanto car with registration number LAGOS FKJ 221 EE with which they were coming from the market.

The woman was breastfeeding her baby last Saturday morning when our reporter visited the police station on a fact-finding mission.

    Capture3

The woman’s husband, Mr. Akanni Adeyeye, decried the alleged brutality meted out to his wife with lacerations on her body and bruises on the face.

Adeyeye, who slept in the police station in solidarity with his wife and his baby, explained that the policemen requested for vehicle particulars and driver’s licence of his brother-in-law who drove the car which are still valid.

He alleged that one of the policemen withheld the documents, demanding that they be “settled,” a euphemism for bribe, which Mrs. Adeyeye and her brother refused on account that the vehicle’s papers were valid.

Adeyeye added: “My wife and her brother were returning from the market at about 3.00 pm on Friday and on arrival at the checkpoint in front of the Pavilion very close to their station, they (policemen) asked for all vehicle papers and driver’s licence which were produced and they are valid.

“After checking all the documents, the policemen were demanding for money to be given as ‘settlement’, which my wife and her brother refused. My wife drew their attention to the baby that was crying in the car.

“Five of them were beating her at the point of arrest and on getting to the station, the beating continued. After thoroughly beating her, they obtained her statement around 10.00 pm. There are wounds on the back of my wife and face to show for it.

“On getting to the station, they now cooked up a story that my wife slapped one of them and tore his uniform, which is a lie. They are telling this lie to justify their cruelty to my wife, my baby and my brother-in-law.

“Neither my wife nor her brother slapped any policeman or tore any uniform. The question to be asked is, how would somebody who is not armed, attack an armed policeman in the midst of his colleagues who are equally armed? They are coming up with this falsehood to cover up their brutality.”

When contacted on phone, the state Police boss, Abdullahi Chafe, insisted that the detainees slapped a policeman on duty and tore his uniform, adding that the matter was still under investigation.

Chafe said: “Those people slapped my policeman on duty and tore their uniform. Uniform is an authority and what those people did was against the law and it is not good for a civilian to slap a policeman.

    Capture2

“It is not good for somebody to prevent a law enforcement officer from carrying out his lawful duty. Somebody wearing the uniform? It is not about his age but the authority he carries. I don’t allow my men to do something contrary to the law.

“I don’t want a woman to be detained with baby or with pregnancy. I don’t want an old woman or a minor to be detained. I have taken note of this and we will take the right action on the matter.”

There was a massive outrage expressed by Nigerians on the various online editions of the major newspapers and many news portals, as many of them poured invectives on the police for the alleged inhumanity to defenseless citizens.

This prompted a reaction from the spokesman of the state police command, Alberto Adeyemi, who posted the pictures of the officer allegedly “slapped” by Mrs. Adeyeye. The officer in question had the left side of his head and the neck plastered.

Adeyemi said in the online statement: “The attention of the Ekiti State Police Command has been drawn to a report on the Internet that a nursing mother was brutalised. We want to put it on record that our personnel stopped a Kia Picanto driven by one Dada Adeniyi and one Toyin.

“When the patrol team requested for the particulars of the vehicle, they told the team they were in a hurry. When the driver came down to open the booth of car, the woman alighted and threw the particulars at the officer.

“She then slapped the officer, the driver also used a plank to attack the officer. The DCO of the new Iyin (Road) Police Station was also attacked when he came to rescue the officer.

“His uniform was torn; the two of them were arrested and brought to the station. They refused to be detained and the policewomen on duty had to use minimum force to compel her to be detained. Later that day, her baby was brought to her. I want to appeal to members of the public to cooperate with the police. The two of them will be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed.”

The incident attracted the attention of Governor Ayo Fayose, who expressed anger that an harmless woman could be brutalised under his nose just few days after his administration celebrated International Women’s Day with fanfare.

The governor, who said his administration would not condone violence against women, promised to launch an investigation into the alleged attack on Mrs. Adeyeye and bring all perpetrators to book.

Fayose, who spoke during his monthly media chat, “Meet Your Governor” for the month of March, vowed that manhandling of women in any guise will no longer be condoned in the state.

He said no responsible man should beat a woman or manhandle or brutalise her for whatever reason, adding that it was unlawful for any policeman to raise his hand against a woman. The governor explained that he was actually coming from a meeting with the state commissioner of police over the matter.

Fayose said: “It is highly irresponsible for any man to brutalise a woman for any reason. The law that forbids violence against women is still operative in this state.

“And I can never allow any form of brutality of women under my watch as governor in Ekiti State. Women are even described as the weaker vessel. As such even if you marry her, does that deny her  rights?

“It is particularly sad that such a report was coming barely a week after we celebrated International Women’s Day in an unprecedented style in this state. I have already ordered investigation into the matter.

“Anybody found culpable in the case will face the court of law. I am also using this opportunity to sound a note of warning to policemen who take people’s vehicle particulars, put them under their armpits and demand for bribe. Such cannot be allowed any longer in Ekiti State. We will get to the root of the matter and make justice to prevail.”

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in Ekiti State has vowed not to allow the matter to be swept under the carpet, describing the alleged beating and detention of the woman and her baby as “wicked, inhuman, barbaric and uncivilised.”

The association called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, to order a high-powered probe into the incident. FIDA also called for the the prosecution of the policemen who participated in the beating of the woman, her brother, Adeniyi Dada. Mrs. Adeyeye, and her baby.

Leaders of other women groups including National Council of Women, Societies (NCWS), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Women Wing, Trade Union Congress (TUC), Women Wing, Market Women Association, National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Nigerian Bar Association and Women in Colleges of Education (WICE) joined in condemning the attack on Mrs. Adeyeye and her detention with her two-month-old baby.

The women groups who carried placards with various inscriptions threatened to march on the state police command headquarters if the erring officers are not brought to justice to serve as deterrent to others.

The groups claimed that following the beating received by Mrs. Adeyeye from the policemen, she has been readmitted at a hospital on account of the injury she received at the point of her Caesarian Section (CS).

They urged the state police command to hand over the policeman, who led other policemen attached to New Iyin Police Station in assaulting Mrs. Adeyeye both at the checkpoint and inside the station.

Some of their placards read: “CP Ekiti, Investigate This Crime,” “We Say No To Detention of Innocent Baby,” “We Demand Justice for Mrs Adeyeye,” “We Say No To Police Brutality,” “Violence  Against Women is Violence Against All,” “Women Deserve Respect,” among others.

Anoma, who spoke through FIDA Vice Chairman Mrs. Seyi Ojo, revealed that Mrs. Adeyeye was delivered of her baby through Cesarian Section and the brutality affected her stitched abdomen. According to her, FIDA has commenced the process of filing a fundamental human rights enforcement suit on behalf of Mrs Adeyeye and her baby in the law court.

She said the women lawyers’ body appreciated the intervention of Governor Ayo Fayose, who ordered a thorough investigation but expressed regrets that the state police command was yet to take any action against the culprits.

FIDA boss said: “We observe with disdain the efforts police is making in covering up this lawlessness of its officers and the injustice to a law-abiding Ekiti woman and her child. Ekiti women are saying no to all forms of violence against women and children.

“Governor Fayose has ordered for a thorough investigation; however, the Ekiti State Command has flagrantly disobeyed and disregarded this order. The CP has refused to investigate this matter and that is why we are holding this press briefing to draw the attention of the whole world to this case.

“After stopping Mrs. Adeyeye and her brother  that day, they tendered all vehicle papers which are still valid and while searching for vehicle’s documents, dollars dropped from the car and the policemen demanded for dollars.”

The chairman, Human Rights Committee, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Ado Ekiti Branch, Vincent Adedara, also called on the Force Headquarters to launch an investigation into the incident because Ekiti command was allegedly shielding the culprits.

Adedara, who is also the state NBA Vice Chairman, further called on the Police Service Commission (PSC) to discipline Waheed and other policemen who participated in the alleged brutality, while the New Iyin Road Police Station Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) should be queried and disciplined.

He said: “What justification did the police have to brutalise a woman and how would a harmless woman assault a fully armed policeman? We believe that the CP has not handled the matter professionally.

“Their action negates international standard of policing because they have gone ahead to plaster the head of a policeman to portray Mrs. Adeyeye as an aggressor and that is why we want the IGP to constitute a high-powered panel to investigate the matter.”

It is sure that that the controversy over the alleged brutality won’t go away soon as it is generating questions among residents of Ekiti State and other Nigerians.

“Can an unarmed woman with a baby in her hand slap and attack a policeman among five of his other colleagues at a scene just near their station? Can the slapping cause deep injuries on the face and the neck of the policeman? Will the woman and the ‘injured’ officer be subjected to medical examination to ascertain who was injured among them?

“If it was true that the woman slapped or tore the uniform as alleged, does that warrant the beating she was subjected to? Was the baby with her at the time of the incident or was he brought to the station as alleged by the police? Where are the dollars allegedly seized from Mrs. Adeyeye?”

Definitely, the case is heading to the court of law and the judiciary will do well to find answers to these posers to stem the tide of brutality at checkpoints, police stations and other public places in Nigeria.

  • Police foil kidnap attempt as suspect denies threatening his victim

The Anti-Kidnapping Squad of Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 33- year- old kidnap suspect, Samuel Ogunleye aka Ilaje boy.

The suspect had allegedly threatened to kill one Dare, if he failed to pay him the sum of N400,000.

According to the officer in charge of anti-kidnapping squad, Mr Akinade Adejobi, a Chief Superintendent of Police(CSP), the suspect was being held for attempted kidnap adding that police would fish out others, while culprits would face the wrath of the law.

Recalling how he made attempt to kidnap his victim before the operation was foiled by police operatives, Ogunleye said: “I am an Ilaje boy because I am from Ilaje area of Ondo State. I attended Stadium High School, Surulere, and later worked as a dockworker in Apapa. When my work at Apapa was not going well, I changed work. I started working as a Lotto agent. I am married with two children and my wife sells Ghana bread. I live with my family at No. 47 Giwa Street, Ijora area of Lagos State.

‘’Let me tell you what really happened that fateful day. My landlord had been disturbing me for money. I live in a room self-contained apartment with kitchen and toilet at Ijora. The landlord wanted me to pay one- year rent which is N60,000, but the only money I had to pay him was N21,000. He refused to accept the money insisting that I must pay him N60,000.

‘’Luckily for me, I heard that one Mr. Oseni, a banker and a big brother to Dare would be celebrating his birthday and that his brother Dare had been helping the needy. I did not know how to contact Dare, so after dining and drinking together in celebration of the birthday, I saw a commercial motorcycle rider (okada man) who used to carry the banker to work. The name of the okada man is Yendu. I told Yendu about my plight and asked him whether there was a way he could help me to pay my house rent as my landlord was disturbing me every now and then. He told me that he was also facing financial problems and he promised to introduce me to one Dare. He explained that Dare had been helping people and he also gave me his phone number.

‘’When I called Dare on phone, he said he did not know me. Later same day he, Dare asked me to send my bank account number. Later, one boy whom I do not know his name called me on phone and said I wanted to collect money from Dare.

‘’I did not mention any amount and if they insisted I mentioned any amount, let them kill me. I only sent a text message to Dare, wherein I told him that my landlord was threatening to eject me from my apartment; I did not want to kidnap Dare. When I discovered that he did not want to help me, I left him alone, I had even forgotten about him until police operatives came to my house and picked my sister.

‘’I did not threatened to kill Dare. Check the text I sent to him. It is clear in the text message that I did not tell him that I will kill him, neither did I tell him that he should give me the sum of N400,000 as ransom. I never said such a thing.

On how he was arrested, he said: “I met them (detectives) on the way as they were taking my sister to a police station. I asked them what happened and my sister said the policemen were looking for me and they picked her because they did not see me. It was on a Monday afternoon. The police then arrested me and took me to their station.

Explaining his ordeal, the victim said: ‘’My name is Dare. I finished at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Lagos. The suspect said it was one of my close friends that sent him to me to kill me. He had been calling me on phone for a week. At some points I was not picking his calls until he told me on the telephone that he had been paid to kill me. He said I had helped one of his younger brothers before, and when he showed my picture to him he advised him not to kill me. I later went to the headquarters of the Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Ikeja, to report the case. The moment I got to SARS he called me again; he said if I didn’t pay the money, he would kill me. He even raised the ransom from N400,000 to N500,000.

Expatiating further, Dare said: ‘’An operative with SARS called collected the phone and asked the suspect on phone what his brother had done to him. He told him that the former officer in charge of SARS was his friend and that he must pay the money. They told me not to worry that they would track him. He (suspect) then sent his bank account number to me, that I should deposit the money there and called again to find out if I had deposited the money.

‘’When the detectives who were tracking him asked him where they would meet him, he told them to come to Ijora or Surulere and boasted that he would kill those behind me one by one no matter the guns they might possess. I then gave his number to the anti-kidnapping squad and they tracked him.

Dare added: “I am happy now. I used to be afraid when he had not been arrested. At times I will see young men, two or three passing by and looking at me and I would get scared to even come out of my house. Now that he has been arrested, I feel relieved but my fear again is that he is connected with powerful people who may fight for his bail. If he is released my life is not safe. There are more of his kind in our society and Police should arrest them for residents to have their peace.’’

  • Police not biased in its handling of Ife crisis – Idris

Police not biased in its handling of Ife crisis – Idris

The police responded on Friday to the accusation partiality in the investigation of the recent communal crisis in Ile-Ife, Osun State, that claimed at least 46 lives.

The clash pitched Yorubas against the Hausas in the ancient city.

The police moved in and arrested several suspects majority of whom are Yorubas.

The development drew sharp criticism from prominent Yoruba leaders and groups, who accused police of favouring the Hausa people in the investigation of the crisis.

They wondered why only the Yoruba suspects are being arrested and harassed over the clash.

However, the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has dismissed the allegation of bias by the police.

“Crime has no tribe,” he told State House Correspondents after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari on the security situation in different part of the country.

He added: “if you are a criminal you are a criminal.

“Crime has no face. We don’t look at crime in the identity of where you are coming from.

“As far as you are a criminal and the police find you wanting, we apply the law.”

Idris expressed doubts over the involvement of Fulani herdsmen in the recent killings in Zaki Biam, Benue State.

He said indications point in the direction of a wanted hoodlum, Gana.

He said, “No I don’t think its Fulani herdsmen. It was a criminal who is using members of his criminal gang in the state to harass people.”

  • IGP briefs Buhari on Zaki Biam, Ile-Ife, other crises

IGP briefs Buhari on Zaki Biam, Ile-Ife, other crises

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris on Friday briefed President Muhammadu Buhari on security crises in the country.

This included the Zaki Biam crisis in Benue State and Ile-Ife crisis in Osun State which resulted in the death of many Nigerians.

Speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, he said “I came to see the President to update him on the deployment of the police in our effort to ensure that we have security all over the country.

“Obviously it’s to share with him our deployment strategies on ground our deployment to some of these flash points all over the country, especially Benue which is the current one, deployment to Kaduna state which started some few weeks back and deployment to the Ile-Ife crisis where recently we have a lot of police officers both special squads and investigation team on ground to conduct investigation on the matter.

On allegation that policemen only arrested people from one section of the country during the Ile-Ife crisis, he said “You know we are police officers, crime has no tribe if you are a criminal you are a criminal. Crime has no face; we don’t look at crime in the identity of where you are coming from. As far as you are a criminal and the police find you wanting we apply the law.

Speaking on the crisis in Benue State, he said “We deployed mobile police unit on 16th of this month and of recent that incident that happened at Zaki Biam there are allegations on that Gana, one of the wanted man, this man has been in the police wanted list I now decided to deploy some special unit both investigative to go after him and get him by all means, like I said earlier definitely that man we are going to get him.”

He also ruled out the possibility of Fulani herdsmen being responsible for the Zaki Biam crisis.

He said “No I don’t think it’s Fulani herdsmen, it was an activity of a criminal who is using some of his criminal gangs in the state to harass people that I have assured the governor when I met with him few days ago.”

On the alleged dissatisfaction of the President over resurgence of crimes in the country while he was away in the United Kingdom, he said “I think we are all in this country, the crisis in Kogi axis is not kidnapping, it’s a case of militants wanting to disrupt the peace in that state and we are out to get them.

Asked to speak on the specific directives given to him by the President, he said “Obviously there should be a specific directive to ensure that all of us use all the facilities at our disposal to make sure that some of these incidents we are talking about are brought under control as soon as possible.

“I gave the President my assurance that we are going to do that. Like I said earlier we have deplored a special squad to Benue and we are surely going to get that Gana  within a short time.” he said

On the claim that the police has no strategy for fighting crimes in the country, he said “You know some of these crisis, we have to look at the origin of these crisis and the immediate cause for you to make a proper classification of these crimes,

“If you follow some of these crimes, they are just crimes that happened without any warning, if you look at that Ife crisis, if you see how it started its just a disagreement between two people selling food along the road, so you have to look at the dynamics of the country itself.

“Obviously when you have such situation we have to react to it. We had to move in to ensure we provide some security to the people,” he added.

Threat to life: Obiano, PDP chairman trade words in Anambra

…We’re on the matter, says DSS

Anambra state governor, Chief Willie Obiano and the state chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Ken Emeakayi, are at daggers drawn following allegations of threat to life reported to the police and Department state service (DSS) by the later.

While Emeakayi has insisted that Obiano threatened to kill him on phone if he continues to propose his administration, the governor, has described the allegation as neither here nor there.

But, the State Director of Department of State Service (DSS), Yusuf Isyhaku says the command was on the matter and had gone far, while the state commissioner of police, Mr. Samuel Okaula has continued to keep mute over the issue.

Before now, the PDP chairman had written a letter to the two security agencies, intimating them on the development between him and the state governor.

After waiting some time without response from the security chiefs, Emeakayi decided to storm the police and DSS commands at the weekend to find out the situation of things.

Emeakayi alleged that the reason he was being pursued by the governor was as a result of the letter he wrote to the state house of Assembly, the police and DSS to call the governor to order for traveling out of the state for 30 days without transmitting to his deputy.

In the letter written about a month ago, the PDP chairman described Obiano action as unconstitutional, adding that anything he did now as the governor of the state was illegal.

Also, the letter calling for Obiano’s impeachment to the state Assembly, was equally endorsed by 27 other political parties in the state under the aegis of Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) led by Hon. Kate Oby Okafor, who is also the state chairman of African Congress of Democrats (ACD)

But in his reaction Obiano’s senior special adviser on research, strategic communication and legislative matters, Prince Oliver Okpala said the allegation by Emeakayi had no basis.

According to Okpala, “When did mere telephone calls transform to violence? That is why I said they are neither here nor there. Since he has reported to the police and the DSS, he can now wait and see the outcome of the investigation”

As a result, Emeakayi during his visit to the DSS and Police,  requested security protection from the police and DSS, also for the security agencies to investigate his allegation and to get a call history of his conversation with the Governor from the service providers.

Police: no bomb at U.S. Consulate in Lagos

No bomb was planted at the American Consulate in Lagos, Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni said yesterday.

Owoseni told reporters the bag suspected to contain an explosive and kept in one of the vehicles at the Consular General Office on Victoria Island, had medical equipment in it.

“We got a call at about 7.40a.m concerning the strange bag. I immediately dispatched the anti-bomb team, Marine Police and Anti-Terrorist personnel to the scene.

“The anti-bomb team professionally removed the bag from the vehicle. After scanning the bag, they discovered that all items inside were medical tools.

“We are, however, investigating the reason why the bag was left there and who is the owner. We don’t want to leave anything to chance.

“We want to also allay the fears of people in Lagos and the diplomatic communities that there is no cause for alarm. There is no bomb planted at the American Embassy in Lagos.

“The police in Lagos assured foreigners and citizens of their safety. We are ever ready to live up to our constitutional responsibilities.

“Since the bag was removed from the embassy, normal activities have resumed,” Owoseni said.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the items in the bag displayed before reporters by Owoseni, included bandages, scissors and plaster.

The content of the bag was taken to the anti-bomb office for further investigation.
