    Police arrest herbalist, others for killing 16-year-old girl

    •Two fresh human hearts, life tortoise recovered

    A herbalist, Tunde Banjo and a Muslim cleric, Nurudeen Adeniyi, have been arrested by the Police in Ijebu-Igbo, the Headquarters of Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State, for allegedly killing a 16-year-old girl identified as Olayinka.

    Also arrested is 19-year-old Tobi Ogunkoya, who is suspected to have lured Olayinka into the hands of Banjo and Adeniyi.

    They were arrested by policemen from Ago-Iwoye and Ijebu-Igbo yesterday, following frantic search for Olayinka’s whereabouts.

    Acting Police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi told The Nation at 2.30p.m. that Serifat Adebanjo reported the abduction of Olayinka to the Police Station in Ago-Iwoye.

    She mentioned Ogunkoya as the suspect in the abduction.

    Oyeyemi added that acting on the information, policemen stormed a house behind Baale house in Imosan community and apprehended Ogunkoya, who confessed that Olayinka was in the custody of Banjo in Ijebu-Igbo.

    According to the police spokesman, Tobi took the police to the home of Banjo in Ijebu-Igbo, where security agents met him and Adeniyi.

    They were arrested; and two fresh human hearts and a life tortoise were recovered from them.

    Oyeyemi said Banjo confessed to the police that the girl had since been killed, her breasts and other vital organs harvested.

    He added that her body was thrown into Ogbere river, Ogun State.

    SEVENTY-year-old Halilu Maikudi, and his three sons – Bello Halilu (25), Suleiman Halilu (18) and another, were among 22 suspects paraded yesterday for kidnapping, cattle rustling and other crimes.

    Commissioner of Police Rabi’u Yusuf paraded the criminals at the state headquarters.

    Maikudi blamed poverty and the devil’s manipulation for the act, promising to turn a new leaf if he was forgiven.

    Another suspect, 78-year-old Mohammed Tukur, claimed to be innocent.

    “I have lived in Falgore forest all my life as a peasant farmer and cattle rearer. It is true that suspected cattle rustlers were operating from a spot close to my residence and I have, on several occasions, cautioned them to refrain from their actions, but they refused.

    “I am not a cattle rustler, I am not a criminal,” he insisted.

    But when asked why he refused to report the criminals to the police, Tukur said: “How can I give information to the police when I have been severally threatened by the cattle rustlers. They had their eyes on me and I was afraid because they were ready to kill me if they found out I was working with the police.

    “Again, I must say that the police should be aware of the activities of these cattle rustlers. There is a check-point close to the black spot where they operate.

    “The traditional leaders are also aware of what is going on. Tell them to release me because I want to go home and continue with my farming.”

    Ten kidnappers, who invaded a house in Karasa and kidnapped a 70-year-old housewife, were also paraded.

    “On receipt of the information, anti-kidnapping operatives pursued them, exchanged gunshots, and arrested Alti Abubakar, alias Maiduna. Investigation showed that the syndicate was led by Alti’s elder brother, Abdulmumini Abubakar Maiduna, a notorious kidnapper now at large, while Abubakar Abubakar and Shumo Alhaji Idi Barume, all of Karasa village, are members of the gangs,” Yusuf said.

    The commissioner added that Abdullahi Idris and Abdulrahman Ishyaku of Gidan Tofa village in Sumaila council were also arrested for possessing two fabricated AK 47 rifles suspected to have been used for kidnapping in Gomo Forest.

    Items recovered include four fabricated AK47 rifles, 96 cows, 33 sheep, dog, 56 rounds of live ammunition, nine motorcycles, two expended cartridges, two mobile phones, two face masks, bows, arrows, illicit drugs and N200,000 cash.

    Police investigate alleged suicide, say victim was killed

    The police in Lagos have dismissed reports that a motorcyclist simply identified as Tunde committed suicide following disagreement with his wife.

    Tunde, a resident of Tokyo Street, Edun, Aburo, Agbado Oke.was found by his neighbours on Sunday morning dead at an uncompleted building on Aluko street.

    There was a long rope hanging his neck to the decking of the building.

    It was gathered that the deceased had scuffles with his wife who moved out of his home, leading him to depression.

    It was learnt that the miegjnours who discovered his dangling body contacted the police who took photographs of the crime scene and evacuated the corpse.

    Reacting to the incident, the command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP) told The Nation that prelimanary investigations have revealed that the deceased was murdered.

    She said: “We have ruled out the possibility of suicide because prelimanary investigations show that the man was killed. We do not know him. We only know his name is Tunde. He was strangled from our findings and we are trying to get to the bottom of the matter.

    “For now, the case is under discreet investigation. All I can tell you is that it was not suicide. Police investigation will reveal more in due time.”

    The police in Lagos have arrested the guard who allegedly killed his employer, Mabel Okafor, 50, at J68B, Close 9, Victoria Garden City (VGC) on August 17.

    The suspect, Tanko Abdulateef, 22, was tracked to Bali in Taraba state and arrested.

    He was said to have stabbed Okafor, a Bureau De Change (BDC) operator on her stomach, ripped it open and left her to die following her alleged refusal to increase his salary.

    The suspect was alleged to have threatened to deal with the woman, an allegation that led to his becoming the major suspect in her murder. It was gathered that the police suspected him following the disappearance of the deceased’s phones, valuables as well as the guard.

    It was learnt that crack policemen from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) went to Taraba in search of the suspect after the deceased’s phones were tracked to the state.

    It was gathered that the police recovered three phones, trinket and a lot of clothes all belonging to the woman.

    According to a police source, the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Panti-Yaba.

    “The woman had a House guard but the guard was nowhere to be found. The body of the victim was examined and it was noticed that she was stabbed in the stomach and her stomach ripped open.

    “She was moved over to the mortuary and the policemen from the division did necessary scene of crime investigations they were supposed to do, while the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

    Contacted, the command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP) said: “The Commissioner of Police called on the Decoy Team of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in charge of tracking and tasked them to deal with the matter. The team swung into operation and after about one week of serious work on the matter, they were able to identify the suspect to be the house guard of the victim and they tracked him to Bali in Taraba State.

    “After about three days in Bali, they were able to recover some of the phones stolen from the victim before eventually arresting the suspect where he was hiding.

    “There is no escape route for criminals in Lagos State. Any crime committed in Lagos will be unravelled. If you commit a crime in Lagos and run to anywhere in Nigeria, the Police in Lagos will come after you,” she said.

    Police declare war on Victoria Island miscreants

    The police have warned miscreants who use uncompleted structures in Victoria Island as abode to vacate or face onslaught.

    Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Victoria Island, Olusegun Ajamolaya, a Chief Superintendent (CSP) stated this at the inauguration of the Eminent Persons Forum (EPF) for the division, while reacting to the complaints raised by a resident, Alhaji Fatai Fashola.

    Earlier, Fashola urged the police to collaborate with Iru Local Council Development Area (LCDA) to dislodge miscreants, who hide and use uncompleted buildings to perpetrate crimes.

    Assuring residents that the area will no longer be safe haven for hoodlums, Ajamolaya said the police have intensified surveillance and patrol around uncompleted structures.

    “Majority of the owners of these buildings have relocated outside the country. We have the map of the buildings and have taken the statistics with photographs which we have sent to the state government. We have also written to the owners of the houses to secure their properties. On our part, there are foot soldiers that patrol those areas. Whenever, we patrol there and we arrest anyone near the uncompleted buildings, we take them to court. Already, some of them are in jail,” said the DPO.

    Continuing, Ajamolaya said the EPF was inaugurated to make Victoria Island impregnable for criminals through the collaboration and support of residents.

    ‘’The essence of this is to place the security of the community within a think tank of eminent persons in partnership with us on issues relating to prevailing crimes and proffer proactive measures to solving major and other crimes within our area of responsibilities,’’ he said.

    Another elder, Oyi Jaleyemi called on the police to increase patrol of Eko Hotel area, alleging that kidnappers disguise as taxi drivers, as well as ‘one chance’ robbers operate in that axis.

    He said: “Some others who operate in that area fall victim to ‘one chance’ syndicate. My own driver was once a victim. Regular patrol of that area will reduce crime.”

    In his remark, Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni who was represented by the Area Commander, Salem Dogo, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), said a suggestion box will be placed at the council for people to drop in ideas on how the police can serve them better.

  • Police arrest cable vandals

    The FCT police command has arrested members of a syndicate that specialises in vandalising armoured cables.

    A statement by the command’s spokesperson, Anjuguri Manzah, said Nafiu Zayanu, Yushau Kabir, Iliasu Abubakar, Ashiru Sani, and Aliyu Usman were arrested on August 25 at Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse II, while vandalising cables belonging to the Abuja Electrical Distribution Company (AEDC).

    The items recovered include 87 pieces of electrical cables, giant cutting machine, and a red-coloured Golf 3 (AH 972 KRV).

    Policemen attached to the command, on August 21, also intercepted hoodlums who were vandalising armoured cables at Maitama road by Yakubu Gowon House.

    The police said the suspects abandoned their operational car and the cables when they noticed police presence.

    Commissioner of Police Muhammad Mustafa, however, assured residents of proactive measures to secure and protect electrical installations and all critical infrastructures in the FCT.

    The Commissioner has  also ordered the transfer of the suspects and exhibits to the Command’s Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CID) for discreet investigation that will lead to the arrest of their cohorts and possible prosecution.

  • Police arrest 14 suspects in Sokoto 

    The police in Sokoto State, at the weekend, arrested 14 suspects after a raid on their hideout.

    Spokesperson El-Mustapha Sani spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto, yesterday.

    He said policemen raided the hideout located between the wood and grains market on Friday following complaints about unauthorised activities at an illegal “one hour market”.

    “This notorious market harbours suspected burglars, thieves and other petty criminals, and the traders are suspected to be dealing in stolen electronics, handsets, jewellery and household items.

    “That was why we acted swiftly and burst the gang, most of who were youths,”” he said.

    Sani said seven of the 14 suspects were cleared and released, and others charged to court.

    “The raids would be routinely sustained and replicated across the state to make the state more secure.

    “We are also appealing to residents to render useful intelligence reports to help security agencies become proactive and nip crime in the bud,” he said.

    Police parade four suspected fake NSCDC members

    The Abia State Police Command has arrested and paraded four young men suspected to be fake members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps [NSCDC] who specialised in hijacking petroleum tanker drivers for ransom.

    Speaking in Umuahia while parading them yesterday [Monday], the state Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade, said his men intercepted a Passat car with registration number NKR 271 AA with four men inside the car.

    He said when they were interrogated; they claimed to be members of the NSCDC but on a mission to hijack tanker trucks with Premium Motor Spirit [PMS] otherwise known as petrol and other petroleum products.

    He gave the names of the suspects as Thankgod Ani, Chinedu Ezekwem, Peter Onyemechi and Chimezie Nnadozie, while items recovered from them included two pairs of NSCDC uniforms, a jack knife and two pairs of safety booths.

    Answering questions from newsmen, Onyemechi said he organised the other members of the team to go for the operation and that they sew the uniforms, stressing that the Passat car belongs to him.

    The Abia police boss said his men also received a distress call from residents of St Paul area in Umungasi, Aba that armed robbers were operating in their area. “My men moved in and gave them a hot chase and during the exchange of gun shots one of the robbers was shot.”

    The CP said, “The man who was shot and wounded was Rowland Davidson Iweka of Ogba in Doli Egbeme Council Area of Rivers State. He was taken to the hospital for treatment to enable us extract information from him, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.”

    He gave the items recovered from them as one pump action gun, one rifle suitcase, and two lady’s bags containing ladies items, nine different phones, one HP laptop, one DVD player and cash of twenty-two thousand naira.

    Oyebade said the gang his team smashed had been on their wanted list, stressing that they had killed one Abraham Willy of Etinan in Akwa Ibom State and wounded Okoro Peter Sopuru ‘m’ and Ifeanyi Ijeoma ‘f’ both students of Abia Polytechnics, Aba.

    The police boss said his men within the period recovered one locally made pistol from a tricycle that was carrying three men, with the registration number IMO RLU 315 WH.

    He said that on sighting the police, the men in the tricycle stopped the tricycle and took to their heels. “On searching the tricycle, we recovered one loaded locally made pistol; we are looking for the owner of the tricycle to enable us find the gang members.”

    He also said his men rescued one kidnap victim at Ohuru Isimiri in Obingwa council area of the state, “We received a report from Mrs. Beauty Ogbonna that her husband has been kidnapped by a seven man gang who made away with their vehicle with registration AKD 925 CY.”

    “Our team of operatives moved in and gave the suspected kidnappers a hot chase, which led to their abandoning their victim unhurt with the vehicle. The victim has been reunited with his family, we after the fleeing suspects.”

    The Abia CP said his men have also smashed a child trafficking syndicate which is situated at No 2 St Bridget Road, Aba, where one Ifeanyi Agbasonu and his wife Oluchi have been operating.

    Oyebade said that when his men arrived there, the husband escaped while the wife, Oluchi, was arrested along with two teenage pregnant girls, Esther Odum and Ebere Ejimadu, both from Imo State, were rescued.

    Answering questions, Esther said she came to the place for the treatment of an undisclosed infection.

    Oluchi, however, said she sells vegetables while her husband is a homeopathic doctor, who travelled out when the police came.

    Community elects ex-police officer as king

    After a long spell without a leader, the people of Isingwu community in Umuahia North, Abia State, now have one, in the form of a former police officer. Chief Daniel Iheanyichukwu Ukaegbu has been chosen as the Ngwu IV.

    His first love was the police, in which he rose to the rank of inspector before he retired. His people have prayed for his reign to be peaceful and long.

    The community had elected Eze Charles Ezebuiro as the first Ngwu I but he died soon after and was replaced by Eze A. N. Ihuoma (Ngwu II) who also died during the reign of the former governor, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, and was replaced by Eze Sam Uzor Ebule (Ngwu III), who died four years ago.

    After the mourning of the death of their last traditional ruler, the people decided to elect another Eze, in the person of Chief Daniel Iheanyichukwu Ukaegbu as the Ngwu IV.

    The new Eze who hails from the Umuokoro clan in the Isingwu community, was the immediate past Palace Secretary to the last traditional ruler. He became the consensus candidate of the entire community and was presented to the Isingwu Welfare Union (IWU), which in turn presented him to the people with overwhelming acceptance.

    Presenting the new Eze-elect to the people of Isingwu, the president-general of IWU, Elder Onyeoforo Igwe thanked God for his mercies and protection for them to witness the day of the emergence of their new king and prayed God to continue to protect and guide their people both at home and in Diaspora.

    All the people who spoke at the presentation ceremony from the president of the women wing of the IWU, Mrs Nneona Ihuoma praised the people for the peaceful way they chose the new traditional ruler which has set them out as peaceful community.

    The youth wing president of the IWU, Sunny Chimaroke urged the people not to leave the new king alone as no one is an island of knowledge, stressing that he needs all the advice that would help him to lead the community.

    In his acceptance speech the new Eze-elect, HRM Eze Ukaegbu promised not to disappoint the people of Isingwu who have placed their destiny and kingdom in his hands, stressing that he will always strive to keep to the tenets of their custom, culture and tradition.

    Eze Ukaegbu also pledged to take the Isingwu community to the level where it will be the envy of other communities around, “I want to assure you the people of Isingwu community that I will not bring shame and disgrace to my people, rather I will ensure that we are at the position we deserve to be and remain there for the good of all”.

    The highlight of the presentation ceremony was the handing over the new traditional ruler to God by His Lordship. Rt Rev F. O. Ekeleme, who is also the chaplain of the Eze-in-council with prayers and asking God to keep him a life and give him a long reign for the benefit of the people of the community.

    Abia police chief warns against extortion

    The new Abia State Commissioner of Police (CP) Adeleye Oyebade has warned officers and men of the state command to desist from extorting residents of the state or face prosecution.

    Oyebade said that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris has zero tolerance for corruption including extortion from motorists and suspects.

    Addressing officers and men of the state command in Umuahia on his maiden interaction with them, Oyebade who is returning to the state after leaving it as deputy commissioner of police said that it will no longer be business as usual for any corrupt officer.

    Oyebade said that the era when police is seen as reactive, corrupt and lethargic institution is over, “The new police are committed to changing the perception people have about us, and we want to be seen as purely professionals”.

    He said, “It will be dangerous for a police officer that is not ready to imbibe the culture of professional best practices, diligence and discipline to remain in the present Nigeria Police Force”.

    “My advice to such police officers is that they should kindly change their attitude or else they will be fished out, the new police under IGP Idris is a people’s police which will be proactive”.

    “The new police order is community based, intelligence-led and dynamic police institution, alive to the responsibility of ensuring public order, prevention of crimes and protection of lives and property”.

    Oyebade said that policing is a collective responsibility of all well-meaning Nigerians, adding that it is only when there is a reciprocal trust that the appropriate support and cooperation will be gotten from members of the public.

    He charged his men, “We should perform our duties with the fear of God, in our patrols, while investigating crimes and even when handling suspects, the job should be done, but we must be fair and firm. We must respect the fundamental human rights of the people in the line of duty”.

    The CP called on the Divisional Police Officer (DPOs) to create an environment that will be conducive for those working under them to work effectively, “We should realize that our subordinates are our greatest assets, as no man is an island of knowledge”.

    Oyebade said, “I am a team player and we all are members of the same team, this team must be able to identify and map out effective strategies to defeat the opponents, we must conduct our investigations with professional dexterity.”
