  • Lagos police arrest woman for “killing” neighbour

The police in Lagos have arrested a woman identified as Ndifreke Femi, 30, for allegedly stabbing her neighbour to death.
Although the incident allegedly occurred at Block 109, Ikota Housing Estate Ajah, the suspect is currently being held at the Homicide Unit, State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti-Yaba.
The Nation also learnt that the police have launched a manhunt for the suspect’s husband who has allegedly fled his residence since the incident occurred.
It was gathered that the mother of two stabbed her neighbour identified as Ayomide Ayenuwa, 28, on the neck with a kitchen knife when he attempted to settle a rift between her and her husband.
According to their neighbours, the deceased had gone into the Femi’s home to pay his electricity bill but met the couple having a scuffle over N20,000 the woman claimed her husband had stolen.
He was said to have made efforts to broker peace between them to no avail and as he was leaving their apartment, the angry woman rushed to her kitchen, picked a kitchen knife and stabbed him on the neck.
It was learnt that other neighbours rushed him to Peninsula Hospital in Ajah but he was referred to the General Hospital, Akodo. He died on their way to the general hospital.
A neighbour who gave his name as James Peter while narrating the incident said it occurred at about 5pm.
“When he got to their room, he saw the husband and wife quarrelling. Ndifreke was accusing her husband of stealing the N20,000 she hid under their mattress. Her husband denied the allegation but she was ready for a fight.
“It was at this point that Ayenuwa made efforts to settle the quarrelling couple but they kept fighting each other. Ayenuwa appealed to Ndifreke to take the matter easy but she descended on him and started calling him names. She told him to mind his business.
“That was how Ayenuwa left the couple to their trouble. As he was walking away, Ndifreke ran into the kitchen and brought out a kitchen knife which she used to stab Ayenuwa on his neck from behind. Neighbours made efforts to save Ayenuwa’s life while others held Ndifreke down and almost lynched her.
“The neighbours with Ayenuwa’s family rushed him to the Peninsula Hospital at Ajah for treatment but he was referred to the General Hospital at Akodo. Sadly, he died on his way to the hospital.”
But in her statement to the police, the suspect claimed she acted in self defence, adding that it was the deceased who attacked her first by punching her on the head.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP) Fatai Owoseni yesterday reiterated the need for dialogue and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.

He stated this during a visit to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch, to pacify the association, following the alleged assault of its member, Sunday Elimihe, by some policemen attached to Onipanu Division.

Owoseni, who praised the lawyer as well as the NBA for not letting the issue escalate, emphasised the importance of dialogue in resolving issues.

The police boss also assured that he would investigate alleged malpractices engaged by personnel of the Onipanu Division, just as he urged the lawyers to follow due process when seeking policemen to aid in judgment execution.

“We are not here to judge who is wrong or right. I came to visit you people as I promised and to also commend you for not letting the issue go out of hand. I told the lawyer that I will foot his hospital bills and my concern is for him to be healthy.

“The lawyer has his fault, which I will tell him when we see again. But no matter what, the policeman should not have assaulted him. The police are not 100 per cent clean, but we have done so much to improve professionalism.

“There are bad eggs everywhere and the police are products of the society,” he said.

The NBA chairman, Yinka Farombi, noted that there has been decline in crime rate under Owoseni.

He, however, decried the treatment meted him by the Onipanu Division after he went there to see the Divisional Police Officer.

    Police cage 200 hoodlums

THE police have flushed out over 200 hoodlums from Lakowe Village in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos.

The action followed the villagers’ complaint about the hoodlums’ activities. They were said to have unleashed terror on the village, raping, looting and maiming.

Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives from the Zone 2  Command in Onikan, Lagos, stormed Lakowe on Tuesday to weed out the hoodlums, sources said yesterday.

The operation was at the instance of Assistant Inspector-  General of  Police (AIG)  in-charge of  Zone 2, Bala Usman. Some of the arrested hoodlums are being interrogated.

The villagers’ spokesman, Otunba Yemi  Adeoye, said the hooodlums had been terrorising the community for long.

“Sometime last year, these people came here and caused  mayhem and we went to court to seek redress’’, he said.

He said the hoodlums were trying to deprive a firm, Toll System Development Company Ltd., of its ownership of land in the village.

According to him, a court has ruled that the land belongs to the company.

The court, he said, in a ruling in suit LD/4320/2014, Toll System Development Co. Ltd. vs Unknown persons, by Justice Muftau Olokooba, on Wednesday July 6, 2015, held that : “ Exhibit  Toll 2 shows that the claimant was the one issued a certificate of occupancy over the land registered as No 17 page 17, 2003 situate at Lakowe village, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos State.

“The claimant has therefore possession. I am therefore satisfied that this is a proper occasion for the exercise of the court’s power to grant the order of possession sought

“It is hereby ordered that the claimant herein do recover possession of the parcel of land measuring 1,581.20 hectares covered by certificate  of occupancy registered as No 17 page 17 in volume 2003T situate at Lakowe village, Ibeju, Lekki, Lagos State from any person who occupies same without the consent or permission of the claimant’’.

Two policemen who participated in the hijack of a trailer loaded with auto spare-parts last Saturday in Ogun State have been dismissed from the service.

Lagos State Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, disclosed this during an interaction with reporters on Wednesday, adding that the suspects will be prosecuted.

Inspector Durojaiye Taiwo and Sergeant Victor Omorokai attached to the strike unit of the Special Anti-Robbery Sqaud (SARS) Ikeja, on Saturday night led two other cops to hijack the trailer carrying goods worth N30million at Shagamu.

Omorokai was later arrested at Okokomaiko , Lagos, after the police through the tracking device on the trailer, monitored the movement of the suspects and ambushed them.

Owoseni, who said the command was resolute in its war against crime and criminality, disclosed that the suspects have been handed over to the Ogun State police command where the crime was committed.

“We did not deny the story, it was all over the media. Some bad fellows committed a crime and it is the stand of the Inspector General of Police that all bad eggs in the Force be exposed and made to face the law like other ordinary criminals.

“We arrested them and the ones that are on the run, we are going after them. Exhibits have been recovered.

“The crime was committed in Ogun State police command and we have handed the ex-policemen to that command to prosecute them in the court of law.

“In the same vein, I want to state that we have not covered anyone of them. They would be tried in the court of law. The Nigeria police would not spare those who are not worthy of wearing the police uniform,” Owoseni said.

The police commissioner paraded over 15 suspects, arrested for various crimes since last week.

Among the suspects were six juvenile cultists arrested at Lagos Island on April 18, during a clash between “Happiness cult” and “Owonikoko cult” groups.

  • Police petitioned over land dispute

    Police petitioned over land dispute

The police have been asked to intervene in a land dispute in Richard Estate at Sapati on the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos.

In a petition, a landlord, Mr Steve Ajose, is accusing a businessman of encroaching on his land.

Ajose alleged that the businessman converted the 20 acres of land he sold to him in 1999 to 22 acres.

The conversion, he claimed, was done in 2005 without the owners’ consent.

Ajose, in the petition sent to the Area J Police Commander by his lawyer, Mr Dotun Adewole, said when his client confronted the businessman, he pleaded for understanding.

But Ajose, he said, rejected his plea, adding that his client sheathe his sword following the intervention of a former police chief and some elders of the community.

Things were said to have got to a head when, at the businessman’s instance, some miscreants destroyed the fence demarcating his land from others.

The petitioner alleged that the businessman is now ‘’forcefully acquiring’’ land in the area and harassing those who challenged him.

  • Why I reported Wizkid to police, by Linda Ikeji

Why I reported Wizkid to police, by Linda Ikeji

After several exchanges of flames on social media, Linda Ikeji has come out to reveal why she reported popular music act Wizkid to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police in a lengthy post on her blog.

According to Ikeji, she reported the matter to the police because Wizkid publicly threatened her and because she wanted to set an example for other women in similar situations.

While the blogger claimed she’s been a fan of Wizkid and had no dislike for him contrary to some online comments making the rounds, she said she noticed Wizkid passed snide remarks on her about a year ago.

The current squabble started when Linda Ikeji published a story that Wizkid was given a quit notice from his Lekki home.

‘When I reported that he was served quit notice at his Lekki home, I stated fact and I didn’t write it out of malice. It’s not every day you get exclusive stories…and I’m sure any other blogger who got the story first would also have published it. So, there was no beef, I was just doing my job. A day or so after I wrote this story, Wizkid went on my Instagram page to call me names and lied that I slept with some director of his … which I have said before is 1000% lies! But the insult and lies is not why the police is now involved.

‘Here’s the thing; You can insult me, insult my family, call me any names you like, even lie that I slept with your forefathers … but don’t threaten me. If you threaten me, I will act!

She disclosed that some comments that said she reported Wizkid to police because she was afraid of him was wrong.

‘No, my darlings, I am not afraid of Wizkid,’ she wrote, ‘Though I do not take his threats lightly.’

Urging young boys to pay attention, she continued: ‘You see, violence against women and threat of violence against women is not okay. Threatening harm to someone in a public space is a criminal act in every country of the world, including Nigeria. I bet some of you didn’t know that, yeah? You cannot publicly threaten someone with harm. You will only get away with it if your victim doesn’t report to the authorities. If they do, you will have a case with the police and I promise you, the police take these things seriously.

Decrying violence and threats of violence against women by men, Ikeji vowed that ‘as long as I have my voice and my platform, I will speak up.’

The popular blogger also said she reported to police to serve as an example to other women in similar situations.

‘The second reason I filed a police report is to encourage other women in similar situations to do same. My dear ladies, if a man threatens to puts hands on you, and you feel the threat is real, report to the authorities. Don’t wait until he does it. What if you don’t survive it? If he’s picked up and may be charged to court (yes, you can be charged to court for making threats…it’s a misdemeanor with a prison sentence), then he will think twice before making threats against you in the future or any other woman for that matter.’

Ending the post, she wished Wizkid the best, saying, ‘I have nothing but love for his craft and hope that one day, we will put this behind us.’
