Bayelsa: Police arrest man for aborting pregnancy of minor

The ‘quack doctor ‘ who allegedly aborted the four-month pregnancy of 12-year-old Bayelsa State girl, identified simply as Queen, has been arrested by the police.

The minor was allegedly raped serially and impregnated by her father, Bamekpa Ademe, who is currently being held at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Bayelsa police command.

The police later launched manhunt on the man who crudely aborted the minor’s pregnancy under the instruction of Bamekpa.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Asinim Butswat, Friday, identified the arrested quack doctor as Mr. Fredrick Osai, who is 38 years old.

Butswat said Osai was arrested at his community in Otiokpoti, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

The abused teenager earlier said her life became more traumatic when her father commenced the process of aborting the pregnancy.

She said the method was crude and opened a chapter of health problems in her life.

She said: “My father after knowing I was pregnant took me to do an abortion. He took me to Elebele and handed me over to his female friend called Peace. Peace then took me to Otu-Aba. The place was an ordinary house.

“They didn’t allow me see the process but I saw the instruments. It was very painful. After that day, I started bleeding because he didn’t abort the pregnancy completely. I was taken back to Otu-Aba on December 5 and from there we went to Otu-Asiga to flush the remaining one.

“I discovered later that my body system had been messed up. I noticed I was no longer menstruating. It was just recently that I was taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) where an operation was done on me with something like a container inserted into me. They called it a minor operation. I went back to remove the container”.

Having arrested Osai, the PPRO said the attention of the police was focused on apprehending Peace who took the minor to Osai for the abortion.

But the teenager’s nephew David Apigi, said unknown to the police commissioner, some members of the team in charge of the case were demanding money from the victim’s family to effect the arrest.

He said such persons even threatened to dismiss the matter and release the suspects if the victim’s family failed to give them money to conclude their investigations.

He said: “The first time we met with the Commissioner of Police, we told him that the policemen in charge of the case were complaining of lack of logistics. He promised to make logistics available to the team.

“I learnt that they collected money from our people before undertaking the mission to arrest the doctor. They are now asking us to bring N20, 000 to enable them go and arrest the lady. They even threatened to leave the matter and release the suspects if we failed to bring the money.

“Now, there is a rumour in our community that the suspect has been asked to bring N400, 000 for the case to be quashed. We are asking the commissioner to monitor what some of the persons handling this matter is doing”.

Butswat, however, said the police were fully committed in getting to the root of the matter adding that all the persons involved in the case would be arrested.

He said: “We are still investigating and we will surely arrest the lady. The command is taking the matter seriously and we have achieved a lot within a short period. We will arrest everybody involved and charge them to court.”

Meanwhile there is jubilation in the Imiringi community, Ogbia, following the arrest of Bamekpa. Apigi said people were happy that the alleged randy man had finally bitten more than he could chew.

“Many people are happy that the law has finally caught up with Bamekpa. They are begging the police to diligently prosecute the matter and ensure that justice is done. They are saluting our courage because we stood our ground to challenge him.

“We are also happy that the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police have shown interest in the matter,” he said.

  • Lawyer battles to regain sight after police assault

Lawyer battles to regain sight after police assault

A Lagos lawyer identified as Sunday Elimihe, 42, is currently battling partial blindness after he was allegedly beaten up  by some policemen attached to the Onipanu Division in Lagos.
Elimihe was rushed to the Shomolu General Hospital Thursday, after he was assaulted by some policemen because he refused to give them N1,000 bribe.
The lawyer also claimed that his attackers collected N150,000 he kept in his car’s pigeon hole and urged President Muhamadu Buhari and Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to rescue innocent Nigerians from daily police brutality.
Trouble was said to have started after a certain Corporal Alonge accused the victim of using forged tinted glass permit.
Reliving his ordeal from his hospital bed, Elimihe said that he was beaten for 30 minutes inside the cell, after a policewoman collected Alonge’s gun who had threatened to shoot him.
He said: “On my way coming from Lekki where I went to check a property with my client, I decided to use the Onipanu police station road, by Apata.
“Immediately I drove into the street close to the station, one Corporal Alonge stopped me, demanded for my vehicle particulars. I gave them to him, then he demanded for my driver’s license, which  I also gave him.
“When he discovered I did not commit any offence, he asked for my tinted glass permit which I gave him. He told me I was using a forged tinted glass permit. I told him I could not have forged a police document as a lawyer.
“He became furious and said he was going to arrest me. He jumped into my vehicle and insisted I must give him N1,000 to bail myself. I said I was not going to give him any money since I have not committed any offence.
“He pounced on me and cocked his gun threatening to shoot me if I make a move. Another policewoman who sighted us came and dragged the gun from him.
“The policeman after being disarmed descended on me and gave me the beating of my life. He pushed me into the cell and another policeman came inside the cell, locked up the cell and beat me for 30 minutes.
“I see this as intimidation of the highest order, not because I am a lawyer, but because I am an average Nigerian. I was humiliated like a common criminal.
“This is oppression. One of my eyes is partially blind. I have been vomiting blood since yesterday. It was the intervention of a good policeman in the station who warned them not to kill me. I would have been dead by now,” he said.
Efforts to get the command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police  (SP) for official comment failed as at press time
However, it was gathered that the state Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni has summoned the officers at the command’s headquarters for interrogation.

  • ‘Police didn’t arrest cooks for picking used pads’

‘Police didn’t arrest cooks for picking used pads’

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Akure, the Ondo State capital, yesterday denied a report that two cooks were arrested for picking used sanitary pads.

Last Friday, the pupils raised the alarm that some cooks allegedly picked their used sanitary pads.

The school suspended them and they are in police custody.

But the PTA  said investigation showed that the suspects were seen at the incinerator site, gathering waste products.

It added that the waste products include spoons, a pair of slippers, a cooler and three used tablets of soap.

This was contained in a statement by the Chairman, Akin Ashimolowo, in Akure.

The PTA blamed a freelance broadcaster, who it said “blew” the matter on his radio programme last Sunday.

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to several newspaper reports of the arrest of two cooks for allegedly picking used sanitary pads of pupils at the Federal Government Girls College, Akure.

“We are compelled to respond to the issues raised in the reports to set the record straight.

“Our investigation revealed that some girls saw the cooks at the incinerator site, gathering waste products.

“They were accosted by the girls who searched their bags and found a spoon, a pair of slippers, a cooler and three used tablets of soap.

“The girls then called their house mistresses to the scene, who also searched the bags and found the items listed above.

“The cooks were led to the management, which on initial investigation concluded that they be suspended.

“At this stage, the PTA Chairman was invited and he appealed to the pupils to conduct themselves properly and allow further investigation.

“Protest from parents on visiting day, April 2, led to the invitation of the police.

“The police team was led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police  and two Divisional Police Officers (DPOs).

The cooks were arrested and taken to the Area Commander’s office.

“As at today, they are still  at the police headquarters.

“We were alarmed when a prominent freelance broadcaster on a radio programme  said the cooks allegedly made away with several bags of used sanitary pads.

“This is junk journalism as nothing of such happened. It was this radio programme that led to the panic by parents.

“It was later discovered that the said broadcaster’s daughter had been a pupil of the college but failed the promotion examination in JSS 1, leading to her being withdrawn from the school.”

Thug, Wasiu Akinwande (aka Oloriesho) has been arrested by the police over the death of a 29-year-old trader Anene Utazi and a nine-year-old Aminat Lateef.

He was nabbed last Tuesday by operatives from D9, State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) at Panti, Yaba, Lagos Mainland following a gun battle at his Mosalashi Street, Mushin hideout.

Sources said Oloriesho has been on the police wanted list for long, following gang-related killings in Mushin since 2009.

He was allegedly linked with almost all gang-related killings in Mushin, Fadeyi, Somolu, Bariga and Ilupeju.

A source said Oloriesho and his gang were recruited in 2009 by a faction of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

Five members of his gang were arrested by SCIID operatives in January and an AK47 snatched from a slain policeman at Daleko on Isolo Road, Lagos, recovered from them.

The source said: “Since his arrest, there has been no news of violent clashes or killings within Mushin; to make sure they achieve lasting peace in the area, the operatives went all out for Oloriesho because he is the leader of the gang that has been terrorising Mushin and its environs.

Few months after they killed nine-year-old Aminat, they also killed, one Akeem Adeleye (a.k.a Cherokee) who was attacked close to his house in Idi-Oro.

“One year after, while his friends were observing his remembrance, Oloriesho and his boys allegedly  stormed the place and  opened fire into the crowd; they  had a shootout with some  operatives  who  were around that area and killed one Niyi Ehindero, who is said to be  a nephew to the former Inspector-General of Police (IGP). He had once deceived the public with his obituary posters in the past.”
