    Police carry out free eye check in Enugu

    Demonstrating that they are indeed friends with the public, the police have provided free eye checks in Enugu State.

    The medical unit of the command held a one day free eye check to mark the 2015 World Sight Day.

    No fewer than 500 members of the public were attended to. Police officers and men as well as their relations were also administered.

    According to the coordinating police medical Unit optometrist Dr. Ituko Ogie, the programme which took place at the police Headquarters Enugu was an annual event celebrated every October 8.

    The exercise was aimed at creating awareness on blindness and vision impairment, she explained, adding that the theme for this year’s celebration is Vision for All.

    She further maintained that this year’s exercise was unprecedented as it was the first of its kind in the history of the command by reaching out to the members of the public  as a way of community service.

    The state commissioner of police, Abubakar Adamu Mohammed told participants that the programme was amongst the laudable programmes of the Inspector General of police, Solomon E. Arase   to reach out to the members of the public by way of community service through the Force medical services Unit Under AIG  Dr. Grace Okudo.

    He enjoined all and sundry to make effective  use of the one day free eye check to discover the status of their eye since it is an important organ of the body.

    Some of the participants who spoke , expressed joy and satisfaction in the programme.

    A beneficiary, Mrs. Martha Amah pointed out that  the gesture by the Nigeria Police Force was the first of its kind where police eye doctors will examine patients medically and give proffer solutions.

    She was optimistic that this would go a long. Way to prevent sudden blindness as well as other eye related problems.

    Police recover N137m in Rivers foiled robbery

    The police, on Wednesday evening, foiled an attempt by some hoodlums to rob a bank in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

    This happened barely 24 hours after suspected robbers in military camouflage killed a mother and her 14-month-old daughter and stole millions of naira from a bank at Festac Town in Lagos State.

    It was learnt that N137,212,000, allegedly stolen by the hoodlums, was recovered in the Port Harcourt robbery, following a shootout between the police and the suspected robbers.

    Police spokesman, Mohammed Ahmed, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the incident yesterday.

    The spokesman said the robbers attacked the bank at the Trans-Amadi Industrial Area at 5pm.

    He said the police rushed to the scene, following a timely tip-off from the public.

    Ahmed said nobody died in the shootout, although some of the suspected robbers might have been injured during the shootout.

    According to him, one of the vehicles recovered from the hoodlums had blood stains.

    The police spokesman expressed the command’s readiness to protect the residents and their property from criminals.

    He urged the public to always cooperate with the police for the state to remain peaceful.

    The police said they recovered two Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), 160 rounds of 7.62mm calibre live ammunition, among others, from the hoodlums.

    Son hacks mother to death in Jos

    Residents of Jenta Magoro in Jos North local government of Plateau state, were thrown into shock following the news of a young man who matcheted his own mother to death.

    The incidence which occurred at about 6am Thursday morning was said to have come after a heated disagreement between the victim and her son.

    The Plateau Police command who confirmed the incidence gave the name of the dead woman as Mama Wollo Inde.

    According to the Police Public Relation Officer DSP Abu Emmanuel, “The 63 year old son known as Bravo Kunde attacked her 75 year old mother Wollo Inde with machete.”

    Close neighbors confirmed that they heard the voice of the old woman crying for help as early as 6am.

    “We rushed to the old woman’s room to discover she was attacked by her own son with whom they have been living together for long.

    “Another neighbor who pleaded anonymity said, “We noticed a very deep cut on the head of the old woman with blood rushing from the cuts when we came in to help her. Some of the neighbors rushed out to look for vehicle to convey her to the hospital but the old woman died before the vehicle could come.”

    A family member, Moses Yakubu, said, “My elder brother has been behaving strange in the last few days and we were suspecting him to be under the influence of hard drugs, but we never knew he could go this far to kill his own mom, we are all in shock.”

    The Police spokesman said, “The suspect was about to escape after the incidence but injured himself in the process. He was immediately apprehended and is currently receiving treatment at Plateau Specialists Hospital Jos.

    “The body of the old woman has also been deposited at the morgue in the same hospital and we have commenced full investigation to unravel what led to the victim committing the crime.”

    Man declared missing in Ondo

    A 30-year old man, Vincent Igiri from Benue State has been declared missing in Ilu-Alaye near Araromi-Obu in Odigbo local government area of Ondo State.

    Sources hinted that the man who is a part-time commercial motorcycle operator carried passengers to Abigi village in the water side area of Ogun state on the last ‘Ileya’ day and have not returned to his base since then.

    One of his brothers, Egbodo Phillips told The Nation that the missing father of three children left his home around 7pm on the fateful day to pick the unknown passengers.

    He said the family members have contacted Police in Abigi and Araromi-Obu on the matter but yet to get inkling on his whereabouts since.

    Another relative of the missing man, Sunday Silas said they had combed several adjoining villages in Ogun state waterside, stressing that he personally reported the case at Ijebu-Ode Area Command.

    He however said the Area Commander-in-charge directed him back to Araromi-Obu Police Division in Ondo state.

    Silas said Vincent’s disappearance since about three weeks ago has brought untold hardship to his wife, children and other family members.

    He urged the Police and other security agents to rescue the missing man.

    Sources at the State Police Command in Akure, the state capital said the case has not been reported at the Command for necessary action.

    We’ll get robbers, say police

    LAGOS State police Chief Fatai Owoseni yesterday vowed to arrest the Festac Town bank robbers, whose stray bullets killed a woman and her 14-month old daughter.

    A statement by the command’s spokesman, Joseph Offor, urged residents to go about their business.

    He said the gun battle between the police and the armed robbers forced them to flee.

    The statement reads: “The Area ‘E’ and the Divisional Police Headquarters both at FESTAC Town received information of sporadic shootings at 4th Avenue FESTAC Town, Lagos.

    “In a swift reaction, the Area Commander, Area ‘E’ mobilised a joint Team of Area ‘E’ and Divisional Headquarters, FESTAC that engaged the armed robbers.

    “Numbering over 40, dressed in military camouflage and armed with military assault rifles of various calibres, they robbed two banks simultaneously.

    “The gun battle forced the robbers to abandon over N27 million and 240 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition. No life was lost on both sides.’’

    The case, Offor said, had been referred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad for investigation. Security, he said, had also been beefed up within FESTAC Town and environs.

    Edo Police, hunters rescue three kidnap victims

    Three passengers who were abducted on Monday by suspected kidnappers along the Benin-Lagos express road have been rescued.

    They were rescued on Tuesday night by a combined team of Edo State Police Command and local hunters.

    The three passengers comprising two males and a female looked traumatized and exhausted when they were presented before newsmen.

    Names of the victims were simply given as Humphrey, Ruth and Kester.

    Edo Police spokesman, DSP Stephen Onwochei, said the victims were abducted after the driver conveying them stopped to check a flat tyre.

    Onwochei explained that the police joined by local hunters pursued the kidnappers until the victims were forcefully released.

    He said clues left by the kidnappers revealed their identities and that they would so be arrested.

    The victims said they trekked through hills and valleys and slept in the bush.

    They said their abductors numbering eight could not demand for ransom because of the constant movement.

    They praised the police for securing their release.

    Meanwhile, a robbery suspect whose gang snatched an Audi car has been shot dead.

    The suspect was killed in a shout out with the police shortly after they robbed a woman of the car.

    DSP Onwochei said other suspects who fled with bullets wound would soon be arrested.

    Owner of the Audi car who gave her name as Mrs. Okungbowa said she just closed shop when the armed men accosted her.

    She said they took her car and money and expressed joy over prompt response by the police.

    Police smash five-man robbery gang

    THE Lagos State Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has smashed a five-man armed robbery gang. Four members of the gang were arrested and their leader simply named Lekan reportedly escaped.

    The suspects are Tayo Abiola, 36 from Ikale Village in Ondo State, Bala Shaibu, 33, from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, Tayo Olajide, 25, from Osun village in Ekiti State and Jessi Garba, 36 from Damboa village in Borno State.

    According to the police the five-man armed robbery gang went to rob in Ajah and branched elsewhere to share their loot when SARS operatives swooped on them.

    Garba confessed to the crime, saying: “We were five in number. We went there to rob but police came and arrested four of us. It is only our gang leader Lekan that escaped. My role is to beat up stubborn victims”.

    Olajide said: “I am a barber and the owner of the hotel where the gang members usually lodge. They have not given me a dime since I knew them. My role is simply to provide accommodation for the gang”.

    Shaibu claimed to be a taxi driver, saying he used to follow Garba on patrol as friends not knowing that he was an armed robber.

    On why he could not leave when he found out that they were robbers, he said it was too late to do because it could cost him his life. He said he is the gang’s operational driver.

    Abiola said their victims included one Navy Captain Overt and one Omobolanle Babatunde and that the operation was carried out on July 20 at Ilaje Ajah.

    Abiola said his younger brother, Sunday, was an armed robber.

    He said he was with Sunday’s gang when the police arrested them while sharing their loot.

    He said he was arrested along with them, adding that a gang member was shot dead in a gun duel with the police.

    Police dismiss Lagos explosion claim

    The Lagos State Police Command on Monday dismissed claims making the rounds that there was an explosion at the Oworonsoki area of Lagos on Sunday, saying it was a minor fire incident.

    The command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Joseph Offor, said in a statement in Lagos that “Lagos did not record any explosion incident as being erroneously circulated.

    “Rather, a minor fire incident occurred at L & K Bus-Stop, in Oworonshoki area of Lagos State at about 2 p.m.

    “A wine shop went in flames and this was caused by leaking refrigerator gas.

    “No life was lost but three persons suffered burns and were taken to the hospital.

    “Two were treated and discharged at a private hospital, while the third, is admitted at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Idi-Araba,’’ the statement said.

    The police also said that it was dedication to pro-active policing by putting in place measures to increase police visibility in the state.

    “In line with the Inspector-General of Police policy thrust of pro-active policing, the Command will continue to put in place measures to increase police visibility in the state

    “This will help to nip in the bud any untoward incident, please,’’ it added.

    Police arrest Falae’s suspected abductors

    Five of the suspected abductors of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae, have been arrested.

    Falae was kidnapped on his farm, three weeks ago, at Ilado Village in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

    The elder statesman was released four days later.

    Family sources confirmed that three of the hoodlums were arrested in Niger State last Sunday; two others were picked up at the weekend.

    It was gathered that the suspects are in the custody of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the State Police Command, Akure, the state capital.

    Policemen are still on the trail of the other fleeing suspects.

    A source said: “Five of them were arrested, three in Niger State on Sunday. Two others were arrested somewhere I cannot say for now but the suspects are in SARS custody.

    “The police are still searching for the other seven suspects and I am sure they too will be arrested very soon.”

    Police spokesman Femi Joseph said the kidnap of the former Minister of Finance was being handled by the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase.

    He said: “I don’t know anything about the issue again; it is the IG who has taken over the issue because it is a national issue.

    “He is likely to brief the press about the development today.”

    Ogun police to quiz KWAM 1 over shooting of undergraduate

    Ogun State police will quiz fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde (KWAM 1) over weekend’s shooting of a university undergraduate at a party in Ago-Iwoye.

    The victim, Kofowora Azeez of Department of Business Education, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, was believed to have been hit by the bullet allegedly released by the musician’s bodyguard during the party at about 1:00 a.m, according to Premium Times

    The 21-year.old victim was in a car near Nasfat building opposite Limelite Hotel when the bullet pierced her buttock. She is receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode.

    A guard of the hotel has been questioned and released by the police. Ogun Police Spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi was quoted to have said: “We are going to invite the musician for questioning because the police will not condone violence in any form.

    “We are inviting him for interrogation and possibly to get the perpetrator who fired the innocent lady.”
