  • Police arraign cultists for murder

    Four suspected cultists have been  arraigned   for allegedly killing two persons at  Mushin, Lagos State.

    The incident happened at about 9.30pm Itire Road  Junction, Mushin around 9.30 pm on February 14, 2015.

    Jamiu Eniola, 34; Benjamin Wilson, 38; Wale Odukoya, 25, and  Taiwo Adewumi, 27, are facing  an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s   Court on a  four count charge  including conspiracy, felony and  murder.

    They are alleged    to have shot   dead Femi   Egbekunle and Saliu Maja on the day of the incident.

    Alleged to have aided them in the act were  one Onbe and one  Nurudeen, both of whom are on the run.

    Jamiu, a fashion designer; Benjamin, a barber; Taiwo, a  tailor and Wale, a   jobless man  had clashed  with   Egbekunle and Maja during   which the suspects shot the victims.

    The charge sheet reads: “That   you Jamiu   Eniola,  Benjamin Wilson; Wale Odukoya; Taiwo Adewumi and others at large  on February 14, 2015 at about 0930 hrs at Itire Road  Junction, Mushin in the Lagos magisterial district did kill one Femi Egbekunle and   Saliu Maja by   shooting him with a gun on his chest and thereby committed   an offence   punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos  State, 2011.

    “That you Jamiu Eniola; Benjamin Wilson; Wale Odukoya; Taiwo Adewumi and  others at large on the same date, time and place in the  aforesaid magisterial  district did belong to an unlawful society called Eiye Confraternity and thereby committed and  offence punishable under Section 42 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    Their plea was not taken.

    The police prosecutor, Elizabeth Ekuma, applied for the   remand of the   defendants in prison custody pending legal advice from  the state Director of Public Prosecution  (DPP).

    The   offences according to the prosecutor are punishable under  Sections 221 and 42  of the Criminal Law of Lagos State,  2011.

    The presiding magistrate, Mrs M.O.Tanimola,  ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison custody   while the case  was adjourned till May 18.

  • Police arrest 18 year-old lady, 2 others for kidnapping

    The Kano state Police command has arrested an 18 years-old lady, alongside two others who partake in the kidnapped of 4-year –old child last Tuesday in Tudun Wada Local Government Area.

    The kidnappers demanded a ransom of 3 Million Naira and threatened to kill the innocent child if they refuse to adhere to their demand.

    This is just as the kidnappers said they wanted to use the ransom demanded to establish a poultry farm.

    The suspected female kidnapper, Fauziyya Bala, 18 years-old resident of Tudun Wada town, in Tudun Wada local government connived with two others and kidnapped 4 year-old Umar Aminu Ibrahim.

    The state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Idris, noted that the kidnap victim was under the care of his grandmother, when he was taken captive by Fauziyya and the duo that assisted her to hatch and carry out the criminal act.

    His words; “On the 14th of April, 2015, Bello Wada criminally conspired With Aliu Tasiu and Fauziyya Bala to kidnap Umar Aminu Ibrahim of Tudun Wada town.

    “Aliyu Tasiu, who is the second suspect, is a brother to the grandmother of the kidnapped child.

    He blocked the view of the child’s grandmother, while the child was being taken away by Bello Wada, who handed over their victim to Fauziyya Bala, who conveyed their victim to Tarauni LG.”

    Mr. Idris disclosed that their victim was whisked away and hidden at a location in Tarauni local government area in Kano metropolis.

    According to him, the trio put a call through to the grandmother of their 4 year-old victim demanding for N3 million as ransome.

    He said, the three man gang threatened to kill their victim, if the grandmother fails to pay the 3 million demanded.

    “The case was reported at Tudun Wada division, the two male suspects were part of those who accompanied the grandmother to the station to report the matter.

    “The police promptly started investigation and successfully arrested the suspects and rescued the victim without any harm or injury,” Idris said.

    The trio, who were paraded at the Kano Bompai state headquarters of the police force, told newsmen that the allegations slammed against them by the police were true.

    Aliyu Tasiu, 25 years-old, sibling of the grandmother of the victim admitted that they conspired and kidnapped their victim.

    “Everything the police have said is true, I did it because I knew for sure that the parents and grandmother of the boy we kidnapped can afford to pay us the N 3million we requested, I am aware and sure the money is available,” Tasiu stated.

    The NATION gathered that, the matter has been referred to SCID for detail investigation and prosecution.

  • Police chief to traders: be security-conscious

    Aba Area Commander of the Nigeria Police, Mr. Peter Wagbara has called on traders and shop owners in the commercial hub of Abia State, and its environs to be security conscious.

    Speaking in his office during a meeting with stakeholders, chairmen and their executive from various markets located in Aba, Wagabra urged them to be vigilant and report to the police within their markets of suspicious objects and strange faces.

    The Aba Area Commander said it has become necessary that traders tightened up security around the markets and their shops and to be able to identify strange faces in the market owing to security reports that some people were planning to perpetuate mayhem in one of the markets in Aba.

    He said: “The police warn anyone who wants to cause disaffection among traders which would bring civil unrest in the market to desist from such act.

    “We have tried to ensure there is maximum security of lives and property in our markets and will not just seat and watch unscrupulous individuals to come and breach the peace existing in Aba, because they want to achieve their selfish aim.

    “I want to urge you to strengthen your internal security, know when to open and close the market. It will enable you to monitor the movement of people in and around the market.

    “You must guard your markets jealously and avoid acts capable of breaching the peace, law and order in your markets. Your property in the markets is worth millions of Naira and if for any reason it was destroyed, you will be the one that will bear the loss.

    “So, you are expected to collaborate with the police and report every incident and suspicious movements to the police so that police can take prompt action. Things dropped where they are not supposed to should not be neglected. Call and tell us. The police anti-bomb detecting department will be alerted to inspect such items before it will be disposed.

    “We have a robust patrol team that will always respond promptly to your emergency calls. All we are asking is for you to do your bit and alert the police whenever you are in doubt or suspecting anything around you.”

    In their separate speeches, the chairman Ariaria International Market, Mr. Lucky Akubueze, Director of Taskforce Ngwa Road Market Chief Friday J. Nwulu and Chief Agbawo Chidi thanked the police chief for his concern over the security of the traders.

    They promised to pass the message across to their members as soon as they go back to their respective markets, even as they promised to co-operate with the police in protecting their lives and property and also in ensuring that there was peace in various markets in Aba and its environs.

  • Police arrest 15 over election violence in Kogi

    The Police Command in Kogi on Thursday said it arrested 15 persons for various offences during the April 11 Governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

    The command’s spokesman, ASP Shola Adebayo, in a statement in Lokoja said the suspects would be charged to court after investigation.

    He said that two of the suspects were arrested in Ofu Local Government with ballot boxes and ballot papers and one suspect at Ankpa for unlawful possession of firearms.

    According to Adebayo, 12 of the suspects were arrested at Gegu-Beki community in Kogi Local Government for post-election violence.

    “There is a case of someone arrested with eight stolen explosive detonators by the police on the eve of the election.

    “This is a situation that would have spelt doom for the state but salvaged by the police,” he said.

    The police spokesman assured that all issues related to security breaches during the polls would be thoroughly investigated.

    He described the election as generally peaceful, attributing it to the proactive measures put in place by the police and other security agencies

    Expedite action on Orekoya kids rescue, police urged

    A non-governmental organisation, Al-Mu’minaat Social Advocacy Project (SAP), has called on security operatives to expedite action in securing the release of the Orekoya kids who were kidnapped last Wednesday.

    A statement by its coordinator, Mrs Sherifah Yusuf-Ajibade, expressed dismay that the three abducted boys are still in captivity.

    The kids – Ademola (6), Adedamola (4) and Aderomola (11 months) were abducted by their housemaid on April 8, a day after she was hired.

    The housemaid, Mary Akinloye, a 23-year-old indigene of Ibadan, Oyo States, was hired through OLX, an online trading portal.

    The agency, formerly known as Dealfish, deals in buying and selling; it is also a free classified advert website where one can easily post adverts including vacancies for free.

    Akinloye was said to have told the kids’ eldest brother, Michael (10), that she was going to buy his siblings’ biscuits.

    The group said the innocent children have a great future and must be protected.

    “Parents,” they said, “must see this as a lesson on the need to be security-conscious and be watchful on whom they hand over their children to.

    “Technology is a great innovation but it is still very important to be critical and security conscious in our interactions, especially when bringing unknown people into our homes.

    “It is important to always keep in mind that children are a trust from God which we will be accountable for and it is important we keep this in mind in raising them.”

    The SAP coordinator said Islam lays emphasis on the home and mandates parents to make the best decisions for the family by placing the interest of the children and the home above individual interests.

  • Polls: Edo police arrest 13 over electoral offences

    Thirteen persons have been arrested by the Edo State Police command over several electoral offences committed during the conduct of April 11 State House of Assembly elections.

    Spokesman of the police, Joseph Edogiawerie, who disclosed this in an interview, said the suspects were arrested at various locations in the state for ballot snatching and other electoral offences.

    Edogiawerie noted that 10 of the suspects were arrested at Auchi while three were arrested at Iguobazuwa in Ovia South- West local government areas.

    It would be recalled that eight suspects were arrested during the March 28 presidential and National Assembly elections in the state for electoral offences.

    Edogiawerie said the suspects would be charged to court after investigations.

    Meanwhile, Edo state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Patrick Aisowerien of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode federal constituency.

    Aisowerien polled a total of 21,759 votes to beat his closet PDP opponent, Larry Ogieva who scored 16,519 votes.

    James Idonigie, the returning officer of the election declared the APC candidate as the winner of the election.

    Police arrest eight for post-election protests

    Eight persons are being held by the police in Kwara State for alleged post-election protests in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

    The suspects, mainly youths, were allegedly caught wielding guns, knives and charms. They reportedly embarked on a shooting spree yesterday to harass people.

    It was learnt that the trouble began when news of the All Progressives Congress (APC) victory in the governorship election was broken in some parts of the state about noon.

    The Nation gathered that youths believed to be supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Niger Street, Ikokoro Street and Taiwo Isale, armed with weapons, trooped out to protest the outcome of the poll.

    Sources said the hoodlums allegedly engaged security operatives in a shootout on Niger Road in Ilorin about 9am, but they were overpowered and arrested by the police.

    Also, supporters of a party went on the rampage at Osi in Ekiti Local Government to protest APC’s victory.

    The thugs were said to have invaded the palace of the Osi monarch, Oba Ibrahim Arowobeku II, vandalising his car.

    Two other cars parked in the community were also destroyed.

    Police spokesman Okasanmi Ajayi confirmed the arrest of the suspects. He said they would be prosecuted.

    According to him, nobody died in the violence.

    Assistant Inspector General of Police, Joseph Mbu on Sunday made a surprise appearance at the INEC collation centre in Lagos.

    Mbu, who was quick to spot a shabbily dressed Police man, retrieved his gun and matched him out of the centre.

    Speaking at the collation centre, Mbu said that the Saturday elections were free and fair.

    “Whoever won was based on merit, no one should cast aspersions on the Police.”

    Ebonyi police uncover plot to disrupt guber election

    The commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, Mr. Maigari Dikko, has raised the alarm over plots by some politicians to disrupt today’s governorship and state assembly elections in the state.

    Accordingly, the command would be deploying over 4,500 police officers to provide security across the state during the polls.

    The state commissioner of police CP Maigari Dikko, made the disclosure in Abakaliki, the state capital yesterday while briefing news men on the level of preparedness of the command towards ensuring hitch-free polls.

    “Intelligence report at the disposal of the police command also indicates that politicians are procuring the services of all shades of characters to disrupt the forthcoming elections and assist them achieve their political ambitions,” Dikko said.

    The CP added: “The result of these self help efforts has in recent times led to some incidents of grievous harm, arson, as well as willful and malicious damage to properties of innocent citizens and perceived political opponents who are all Ebonyians.”

    He said that “necessary arrangements have been put in place, in terms of logistics/equipment and materials distributed to their designated areas.

    “The State Police Command, in conjunction with other security agencies, has taken into consideration issues of security concerns that arose during the last presidential/National Assembly election, as well as the concerns of the political parties and their candidates, and has put measures and strategies in place to address such complaints.”

    Dikko said that security operatives drawn from the Nigerian Army and other para-military forces had been evenly redeployed to all nooks and crannies of the three senatorial zones in the state.

    He appealed to the political class for restraint and caution, particularly with regards to public utterances and statements in both the print and electronic media, which he said could have far reaching negative impact on the relative peace being enjoyed in the state.

    “Abide by the peace accord signed by the candidates of political parties in the course of the electioneering period at both the national and state levels,” he maintained.

    On the restriction of movements during the election, the police boss said that joint patrol teams comprising the police, the army , the Directorate of Security Services (DSS) and the National Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) will be prowling every nook and cranny of the state to enforce the no-movement-of-vehicles order.

  • Police impose curfew on Adamawa after elections

    In an attempt to forestall a breakdown of law and order, the Adamawa state Police Command, has imposed dusk to dawn curfew on the State beginning from Sunday, the 12 of April 2015.

    The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Gabriel Adaji made the announcement while briefing newsmen in his office Friday in Yola as preparatory to Saturday’s Governorship and state Assembly elections.

    But political parties have reacted sharply to the development, insisting that it was wrong to impose curfew when collation of results were yet on-going.

    The police command’s action, it was learnt has generated tension among candidates and the political parties standing elections this Saturday.

    The police Commissioner who announced that the curfew would run between 12th and 14th of the month beginning at 6 Pm to 6am, however, said there was no reason for anybody or political parties involved in the election to entertain any fear.

    He said the measure is to ensure peaceful and orderly conduct of the governorship and state House of Assembly elections in the state and forestall attempts by anyone to breach the peace even after the elections, especially while celebrating party victory.

    “After the last presidential and National Assembly elections, we had some nasty and ugly experiences in the state, hence the present measures,” Adaji explained

    The police Boss also announced the ban of Keke Napep, wheel barrow, truck-pushers and any other hawking materials and moveable objects, warning that the law will take it cause on any person or group who violates the order.

    Adaji lauded the people of the state, especially politicians for their peaceful and orderly conducts during the presidential and National Assembly elections.

    However, some political parties in the state have reacted sharply to the imposition of curfew, particularly as collation of results of the election are suppose to be on- going.

    The publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ahmed Lawal said the party does not see reason why curfew should be imposed on the state if there is peaceful election.

    Lawal said the police should review the matter in the interest of all parties involved in the election.
