    • Victim confirmed dead, pistol, ammunition recovered as police take custody of hospitalised suspect.

    The Cross River State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit has prevented a mob action against a suspected armed robber who was allegedly attempting to rob a lady in Calabar.

    The incident happened in the early hours of yesterday.

    Police sources said the operation led to the recovery of a Beretta pistol with three 9mm rounds of ammunition and arrest of individuals involved in the attack.

    The suspect, prior to the arrival of the Police, was beaten unconscious by the mob at Abangasang, Mbora Street, Calabar, and rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for medical attention.

    The victim, whose identity was unknown, was pronounced dead at the hospital in the early hours of yesterday.

    Three suspects are in police custody and are assisting with their investigation.The victim’s body has been evacuated and deposited at the UCTH mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident continued.

     Commissioner of Police Rashid Afegbua, described the operation as, “a clear demonstration of the Command’s commitment to crime prevention, protection of lives, and strict adherence to the rule of law”.

    The Police boss reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for violent crime. He condemned action and emphasised that suspects  must be handed over to the police for prosecution..

    He appealed to the public to cooperate with the police by providing timely and useful information, and to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

    The Command’s spokesman, Assistant Superintendent of Police Sunday Eitokpah, reassured the good people of the command’s resolve to ensure safety and security.

    Police foil kidnapping attempt, rescue victim in Oyo

    A kidnapped victim, Haruna Lawal, who was abducted at Olorunda village via Oyo, has been rescued by operatives of the Oyo State Command of the Nigerian Police.

    The victim, who was abducted alongside his motorcycle to an unknown location, was rescued after his sister, Alimot, made a distress call to the Police to alert them of the invasion of the residence by suspected kidnappers who were said to be armed with dangerous weapons.

    Confirming the rescue in a statement, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Oyo State Command, Ayanlade Olayinka, said the prompt response and aggressive bush-combing operation by the police exerted pressure on the suspects.

    He explained that, as police operatives advanced into the area with patrol vans and sirens, the kidnappers, realizing that security forces were closing in on them, abandoned the victim and fled, adding that the kidnapped victim was consequently rescued alive.

    Ayanlade said, “We wish to inform the general public of the successful rescue of a kidnapped victim following the swift and coordinated response of police operatives, reflecting the Command’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property.

    “On 24th January, 2026, at about 0210 hours, the Command received a distress call from Alimot (female) of Ojongbodu Area, Oyo State, reporting that suspected kidnappers armed with dangerous weapons had invaded her brother’s residence.

    “During the invasion, the assailants abducted Haruna Lawal (male) of Olorunda Village via Oyo and escaped with his motorcycle to an unknown location.

    “Upon receipt of the report and acting on the directives of the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Femi Haruna, operatives of the Command immediately swung into action and deployed to the area. The prompt response and aggressive bush-combing operation exerted pressure on the suspects.

    “As police operatives advanced into the area with patrol vans and sirens, the kidnappers, realizing that security forces were closing in on them, abandoned the victim and fled. The kidnapped victim was consequently rescued alive.

    “The victim sustained a head injury during the ordeal and was promptly conveyed to the General Hospital, Oyo, where he is currently receiving appropriate medical attention.

    “The swift rescue, achieved within hours of the abduction, underscores the professionalism, vigilance, and dedication of the Oyo State Police Command in responding decisively to threats against public safety.”

    He, however, assured that efforts have been intensified to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects, while the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

    A senior police officer and public relations expert, Nwode Nkeiruka, has donated desks, school sandals, school bags and other educational materials to a public primary school in Ishimkpuma Ndiezi Okpoto community, Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

    The donation by Nwode, a Chief Superintendent of Police(CSP) is said to have brought the much needed relief and renewed hope to pupils, teachers and the host community.

    The donation, which included 51 classroom chairs, 98 pairs of school sandals, 40 school bags and other learning materials, was described by community members as a long-awaited intervention that has significantly improved the learning environment of the school.

    The items were distributed across classrooms, with eight chairs allocated to each class.

    Speaking on the gesture, CSP Nkeiruka said the initiative was part of her commitment to giving back to society and supporting the education of children, especially in underserved communities.

    “So few days back, I decided to make a small change in the school not because chairs, the school bags and shoes I got for them would solve everything, but because every child deserves comfort, dignity, and the chance to learn without unnecessary hardship.

    “May this be a reminder that sometimes, kindness begins with noticing. And impact doesn’t have to be loud to be life-changing”, she said.

    She noted that while the donation might appear small, access to basic learning materials plays a critical role in shaping the future of children

    “It may seem small, but access to basic learning needs makes a real difference in the lives of our children. I am grateful to the school for allowing me to contribute in this small but meaningful way,” she said.

    She also acknowledged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for what she described as the opportunity and institutional support to serve communities beyond her official duties.

    She reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to community partnership, describing the police as friends of the people.

    The donation attracted commendation from community leaders, teachers and parents, who expressed deep appreciation for the intervention after years of unsuccessful appeals for government assistance.

    Many described the visit as historic, noting that it restored dignity and confidence to the pupils and created a more conducive learning environment.

    27-year-old woman slumps, dies in boyfriend’s house

    Residents of Die-Die in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja were thrown into confusion when a 27-year-old woman, Esther Akwaji, was reported to have collapsed and died under mysterious circumstances.

    Akwaji was said to have died at her boyfriend’s house while eating.

    Findings revealed that the deceased’s boyfriend, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, allegedly fled shortly after the incident, sparking suspicion and prompting police investigation.

    It was gathered that Esther Akwaji, who was a resident of Nasarawa State, travelled to Abuja to visit family members.

    On January 21, she reportedly left her family’s home, telling relatives she was going to a bank in Dei-Dei and never returned.

    Hours later, family members were reportedly contacted by a man who identified himself as Esther’s boyfriend, using her mobile phone.

    According to a source who pleaded anonymity, the man said Esther had come to visit him and that he had bought food for them to eat.

    He allegedly told the family that while eating, Esther suddenly started vomiting.

    The said boyfriend claimed he rushed her to Kubwa General Hospital where medical personnel reportedly confirmed that she was dead on arrival.

    The man was said to have fled the hospital shortly after doctors pronounced her dead and has remained unreachable since the incident.

    Confirming the incident, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the command had commenced full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Esther Akwaji’s death.

    “The corpse has been deposited for autopsy to determine the actual cause of death, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect,” Adeh said.

    Adeh also said the incident was reported on Thursday around 11:am by one Mr. Peter Akwaji who claimed to be Esther’s brother.

    According to her: “On 22nd January, 2026, at about 11:00 a.m., a distress call was received at the Dei-Dei ‘A’ Division from one Mr. Peter Akwaji, who reported that his sister, Ms. Esther Akwaji (27 years), left home on 21st January, 2026, at about 3:00 p.m., stating that she was going to a bank in Dei-Dei but never returned.

    “He further disclosed that at about 10:30 p.m. the same day, he received an anonymous telephone call from an individual who identified himself as the deceased’s boyfriend. The caller stated that Esther had visited him at his residence, where he bought food for her, which she ate, after which she began vomiting. He claimed that she was rushed to Kubwa General Hospital, where she was confirmed dead while receiving treatment.

    “Following the report, a team of Police operatives from the Dei-Dei Division immediately swung into action and proceeded to Kubwa General Hospital, where the lifeless body of Ms. Esther Akwaji was recovered and deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy, to determine the exact cause of death.

    “Discreet investigations have commenced and efforts are currently ongoing to trace and apprehend the alleged boyfriend, who is presently on the run”.

    Adeh assured members of the public of police’s unwavering commitment to a thorough investigation and to ensuring that all persons found culpable are brought to justice.

    She added that further developments will be communicated during the cause of investigation.

    Delta State Police Command has arrested 10 kidnap and armed robbery suspects on the Jeddo/Ughoton-Warri axis.

    Operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime Squad (SAKCCS) of the command arrested the suspects, following reported cases of kidnapping and armed robbery in Obinoba, Obiaruku, Abraka, Orerokpe and neighbouring communities.

    Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Bright Edafe, in a statement, said the operatives trailed a suspect to a notorious criminal hideout allegedly operated by Oke Jerry Ekokodjie and one Ibori (surname unknown).

    During the raid, the two principal suspects and three others were arrested, while some gang members escaped through nearby creeks, Edafe stated.

    Recovered exhibits include a local Beretta pistol with three rounds of 9mm ammunition, another local pistol, a black Mercedes-Benz GLK vehicle, a battle axe, illicit substances in commercial quantity and a Point-of-Sale (POS) machine.

    The Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola: “Our operatives acted with professionalism and precision, leveraging actionable intelligence to achieve this success.     In another operation, the spokesman said operatives from Obiaruku Division raided a suspected cultists’ hideout at Amai Community, Ndokwa East Local Government Area.

    He said during the operation, which took place about 0256 hours yesterday, five suspects were arrested.

    The arrested suspects were Frank Etiyemonu, 36; Chinedu Emeka, 25; Festus Nwadiche, 26; Azuju Onowu, 29 and Ozor Blessing, 29.

    The Police Command in Lagos State has warned the public against spreading false information, following distress messages sent to two private school officials in Ikeja from an unknown source.

    The state Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Olohundare Jimoh, issued the warning in a statement yesterday by the command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Abimbola Adebisi.

    Jimoh’s warning came after false information was circulated to two private schools, alleging the presence of improvised explosive devices on the premises.

    Adebisi said the Human Resources Manager and Chief Security Officer of the affected schools independently reported the incident to the Ikeja Divisional Police Headquarters.

    “The reports were made about 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday after they received threatening WhatsApp messages from the same unidentified phone number.

    “Upon receiving the reports, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Olohundare Jimoh, immediately mobilised a high-powered security team and personally led operatives to the schools for an on-the-spot assessment.

    “The team comprised personnel from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), and other tactical units of the command, ” she said.

    Adebisi said that a thorough and painstaking security sweep of the school premises was conducted by EOD-CBRN experts.

    “The operation covered classrooms, administrative offices, halls, playgrounds, and surrounding areas to rule out the presence of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) or other dangerous materials.

    “No explosive or hazardous items were found, and the schools were subsequently declared safe for continued academic and administrative activities,” she said.

    The spokesperson said the CP frowned upon the false information, and had ordered an intensified investigation to trace, identify, and apprehend the individual or individuals behind the threat messages, with a view to bringing them to justice in accordance with the law.

    The image maker said that combined teams of police personnel had been strategically deployed on a permanent basis to the schools to ensure round-the-clock security of students, staff, and facilities.

    She reassured parents, guardians, school authorities, and the public of the command’s commitment to the protection of lives and property across the state.

    Adebisi urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines.

    It would be recalled that upon receiving the threats of attack by unknown persons, the secondary schools which are based in Ikeja GRA, sent their pupils home temporarily.

    To ensure safety of pupils and teachers, The Nation gathered that both schools contacted parents and told them to keep their wards at home over an alleged bomb scare until the coast was clear.

    Threats of attack by unknown persons have forced two popular secondary schools in Ikeja GRA, Lagos, to send pupils home temporarily.

    The threats were received by both schools on Tuesday, prompting a report to the Lagos State Police Command.

    To ensure the safety of pupils and teachers, The Nation gathered that both schools contacted parents and told them to keep their wards at home over an alleged fire scare.

    A parent whose children attend one of the schools confirmed that they have been at home, adding that the school told them there was an issue that needed resolution to prevent a fire outbreak.

    “Yes, my kids have been home. We were told there is a fire scare or something that needs to be resolved, and so the children should stay home until it is solved.”

    During a visit to the schools on Thursday, it was observed that specialised operatives from the command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN), the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), other specialised units, and soldiers from the 9Brigade Nigerian Army were on the ground.

    Residents confirmed that the Commissioner of Police (CP) Olohundare Jimoh was at the schools on Wednesday, adding that anti-bomb experts swept the entire premises to ensure there was no threat.

    They also confirmed that the Brigade Commander and his soldiers visited the schools on Wednesday, adding that surveillance had continued since the threat was reported to the police.

    Confirming the threat, the Lagos Police Command said an investigation was underway to fish out those behind the messages.

    A statement by the spokesperson for the command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that anti-bomb experts swept the schools and no threats were discovered.

    “The Lagos State Police Command has once again demonstrated its commitment to the protection of lives and property following a swift, intelligence-led response to a security threat directed at some prominent private schools in Ikeja.

    “On Tuesday, 21st January, 2026, at about 16:00 hrs, the Human Resources Manager and the Chief Security Officer of both schools, situated within Ikeja, independently reported to Ikeja Divisional Headquarters that they received distress WhatsApp messages from the same unknown number.

    “Upon receipt of the reports, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, immediately mobilised and personally led a team of police operatives, including experts from the command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN), the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), and other tactical teams, to the school premises for on-the-spot assessment and security reinforcement.

    “A painstaking and comprehensive sweep of the entire school environment, including classrooms, administrative offices, halls, playgrounds, and surrounding premises, was conducted by the EOD-CBRN experts to rule out the presence of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) or any other dangerous or suspicious materials. The operation yielded no explosive or hazardous device, and the schools were consequently declared safe for continued academic and administrative activities.

    “The Commissioner of Police has directed that the investigation be intensified to trace, identify, and apprehend the sender(s) of the threat message with a view to bringing them to justice, while combined teams of police personnel have been strategically deployed on a permanent basis to the affected schools to ensure round-the-clock safety of students, staff, and school facilities.

    “The Lagos State Police Command assures parents, guardians, school authorities, and the general public that the command remains proactive, responsive, and fully committed to maintaining peace, safety, and public order across the state.

    “Members of the public are enjoined to remain calm, vigilant, and continue with their lawful activities, while promptly reporting any suspicious activity or security concern to the nearest police station or through emergency numbers: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, 08039344870 and 09168630929,” said the police command.

    The Delta State Police Command has revealed that 10 suspects, including five members of a kidnapping/armed robbery syndicate and five cultists, have been arrested by operatives of the command.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, revealed this in a statement on Thursday.

    Edafe said that on January 20, 2026, at about 0430 hours, operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime Squad (SAKCCS), acting on credible intelligence, carried out a coordinated follow-up operation in connection with reported cases of kidnapping and armed robbery across Obinoba, Obiaruku, Abraka, Ororokpe, and neighbouring communities.

    He said the intelligence-driven operation, executed along the Jedo/Ugboton–Warri axis, involved the discreet trailing of a suspect to a notorious criminal hideout allegedly operated by one Oke Jerry Ekokodjie (male) and one Ibori (surname unknown).

    He said upon storming the location, the principal suspects, Oke Jerry Ekokodjie and Ibori, alongside three (3) other gang members, were successfully arrested.

    However, he said some members of the syndicate escaped through adjoining creeks and waterways.

    The spokesman said a thorough search of the premises led to the recovery of one (1) locally fabricated Beretta-style pistol, three (3) rounds of 9mm live ammunition, one (1) Mercedes-Benz GLK vehicle (black colour), one (1) battle axe, illicit substances in commercial quantity and one (1) Point-of-Sale (POS) machine.

    Edafe said the arrested suspects were currently in police custody undergoing further investigation.

    He stated that efforts were ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing members of the criminal syndicate.

    In another operation, the spokesman said operatives from Obiaruku Division carried out a targeted raid on a suspected cultist’s hideout at Amai Community, Ndokwa East Local Government Area of the state.

    He said during the operation, which took place on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at about 0256 hours, five (5) suspects were arrested.

    The arrested suspects were Frank Etiyemonu (male, 36 years), Chinedu Emeka (male, 25 years), Festus Nwadiche (male, 26 years), Azuju Onowu (male, 29 years), and Ozor Blessing (male, 29 years).

    Edafe stated, “A search of the hideout resulted in the recovery of: one (1) locally made pistol, two (2) battle axes, quantities of Indian hemp and other suspected hard drugs, and other dangerous weapons.

    “The suspects are currently in police custody while investigations continue.”

    Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Aina Adesola, has commended the operatives for their professionalism and effective deployment of actionable intelligence.

    He reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to rid Delta State of criminal elements through sustained, proactive, and intelligence-led policing.

    Recovered exhibits include a locally fabricated Beretta-style pistol with three rounds of 9mm live ammunition, another locally made pistol, a black Mercedes-Benz GLK vehicle, a battle axe, illicit substances in commercial quantity, and a Point-of-Sale (POS) machine.

    Commending the operatives, the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, said the arrests underscored the Command’s resolve to dismantle criminal networks across the state.

    “Our operatives acted with professionalism and precision, leveraging actionable intelligence to achieve this success. We remain unwavering in our commitment to rid Delta State of criminal elements through sustained, proactive, and intelligence-led policing,” the CP said.
