Seventeen suspects, including a 28-year-old man who threatened to kidnap a bishop in Benin City, were yesterday paraded by the police in Edo State.

Among them were Emmanuel Okosun (aka Fedeko), who admitted to have been involved in several kidnap cases.

Okosun said he was arrested on April 16, two days after a kidnap operation fetched him N700,000, which was displayed with him.

He said though he was not involved in ransom negotiation and collection, his gang members told him that their victim paid N5 million.

The police said the bishop complained of receiving calls and messages from a strange number, threatening to kidnap him.

Prompt investigation led to the arrest of Roland Joshua Ejomafunwe Aregbo last Friday.

Aregbo said: “I sent a threat message to Bishop Peter Imasuen, demanding N5 million, I was later arrested and brought here to the police headquarters.”

On why he sent the message, the suspect said: “I don’t know when I even sent the message my brother e get as e bi.”

Also paraded were Kelvin Igbinosa(27), Segun Omonigho(28), Eseiwi Osakwe (26), Meshack Adolor(23) and James Ogaga(29).

  • Police Officers’ wives protest killing of spouses

Wives of policemen killed in Nasarawa State by a militia group on Thursday took to the streets to protest the murder of their spouses.

The Nasarawa State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Michael Ada, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) the protesting women had blocked the Akwanga–Lafia Federal Highway at the Squadron 38 Mopol base axis in Akwanga.

According to him, the women are demanding to know what actually happened to their spouses and had called on the government to ensure that justice was done and the killers arrested and brought to book.

Adah said the Commissioner of Police, Mr Abayomi Akeremale, had directed the Akwanga Area Commander to appeal to the women to be calm.

He said the death of the officers was a big blow not just to the police, but the country at large and assured their spouses that the police would do all within its power to ensure that the death of the gallant officers was not in vain.

According to eye witnesses held in traffic as a result of the protest, the women, who came out in large number, set fire along the highway with many of them wailing uncontrollably and raining curses.

  • Police absolve Adebajo, two others of allegations

The Police have absolved Justice Adeniyi Adebajo of a Lagos High Court, Igbosere and two of his siblings, Gboyega and Wemimo, of the allegations made against him in several petitions allegedly signed by his mother, Mrs Irene Alake Adebajo and some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for want of evidence.

The Police said “it perceived the petitions to be frivolous and would not be taken serious for want of evidence”.

The report of the examination of the document signed by the Forensic document Examiner, Assistant Superintendent of Police(ASP) R.A. Onwuzuligbo dated April 16, 2013, sources said, indicated that the petitions purportedly signed by the mother of Justice Adebajo may have been written two persons.

The petitions have alleged that Justice Adebajo and two of his siblings, Gboyega and Wemimo, assaulted, brutalised and threatened the life of their mother, Mrs Irene Adebajo, with intent to cause her bodily harm among others.

In all, about nine petitions dated between November 2, 2011 and March 20, 2013, against Justice Adebajo were examined by the Forensic Science Laboratory, D’ department(Force C.I.D.), Nigeria Police Force, Ikoyi ,Lagos. They were marked “A, A1, B,C,D,E,F,G, and H” and examined and compared on whether they were signed by one signatory. All the petitions were referred to the X-Squad section for discreet investigation.

According to the report,  the “scientific examination and comparison via video spectral comparator (VSC-5000) and other distinguished apparatus carried out on the written signatures in the relevant columns of the documents marked ‘A,B,C,D,E,F,G and H’ revealed inherent features of disparity between signatures on documents marked ‘A-A1’ and signatures on documents marked ‘B-H’”.

The Police said “the written signatures in the columns of ‘Irene Alake Adebajo (Mrs.) and deponent on documents marked ‘A’ and ‘A1’ were written by one writer. “Written signatures in the columns of ‘Mrs Irene alake Adebajo’ and Olori Irene Alake Adebajo’ on documents marked “B,C,D,E,F,G and H’ were written by one writer. “The writer of written signatures in the relevant columns of documents marked ‘A’ and ‘A1’ is different to the writer of written signatures in the relevant columns of document marked ‘B,C,d,E,F,G and H’, the police forensic examiner stated.

Another report signed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police (Admininstration), Ngozi Ilo, on behalf of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, according to sources, stated that investigations conducted further revealed that the issues involved was a family matter.

“Besides, the allegations made could not be substantiated with proofs as the petitioner refused to turn up on invitation to buttress her claim.

“From the foregoing, it can be established from the available findings that it is more of a family issue as the petitioner is of age and her only daughter, one Princess Gloria Adebajo-Fraser took custody of her because of her state of health due to old age, though without the consent of her brothers or other members of the family and this development caused disharmony in the relationship between them which resulted in the allegations,” it added.

  • Police kill two, arrest three in foiled bureau de change robbery

Police kill two, arrest three in foiled bureau de change robbery

It was a black day for armed robbers in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, yesterday as the police foiled attempts to rob a bureau de change shop, killing three and arresting three other armed robbery suspects.

The suspects, who rode on motorcycles to the bureau de change in Sabo area of the city around 5:30 pm, swooped on the shop and ordered the customers and operators to surrender all currencies in their possession.

A member of the gang, who manned the entrance of the shop, was said to have fired a shot into the air to scare off neighbours and passers-by, forcing them to scamper for safety.

But the gunshot confirmed to residents an armed robbery was taking place, forcing them to contact the police.

The command swiftly mobilised members of a special task force code named Skynet from the nearby Mokola Police Division, who cordoned off the shop.

On sighting the police, the armed bandits were said to have made attempts to escape by engaging them in a gun duel.

Two of the five-member gang were killed in the crossfire while three others were arrested.

The gun duel caused pandemonium in the Sabo/Mokola area as residents, passers-by and motorists scampered for safety.

While shop owners and customers ran for cover, motorists abandoned their vehicles.

The development also caused a terrible traffic snarl in the area

The bandits’ eventual defeat triggered jubilation among residents in the area and restored normalcy.

Residents, traders and motorists hailed the police for a job well done.

The corpses and three suspects were taken to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) headquarters in Iyaganku.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Mrs. Olabisi Ilobanafor, confirmed the incident.

Ilobanafor, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) said: “I want to use this medium to express gratitude to residents of Mokola.

“They joined hands with the police to bring these robbers to their kneel. They gave the police necessary backing. We implore other residents to emulate them. Security is everybody’s business.”

She warned criminals to stay away from the state, saying the command was battle-ready for them.

  • NSCDC Inspector held for posting nude picture on facebook

NSCDC Inspector held for posting nude picture on facebook

A Senior Inspector in the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr Bayo Onifade, of the Oyo State Command has been arrested by the police for posting a nude picture of his mistress on facebook after their relationship collapsed.

It was gathered that Onifade and the married woman started their private love affair in December last year in Saki, a major town in the northern part of Oyo State.

While the relationship lasted, Onifade was said to have taken his lover to a location in the town where he took her nude photograph with his mobile phone.

But disagreement  broke out when the woman decided to stop the relationship in March. The decision did not go down well with the NSCDC Senior Inspector. He was said to have pleaded with her to continue with the secret affair but the 27-year old mother of two declined.

It was learnt that Onifade  consequently posted the nude photo of the woman on facebook .

Facebook users  close to the woman’s husband were said to have drawn his attention to it, a development that made him send his wife packing.

Onifade, 32, has since been arrested by police.

It was learnt that  Onifade was arrested for defamation of character and indecent assault of the woman.

The State NSCDC Public Relations Officer (PRO) , Mr Olusegun Oluwole, confirmed the incident and said that Onifade has been suspended pending resolution of the case.

  • Police kill robbery suspects in Port Harcourt

Rivers Police Command said its men had shot dead three armed robbery suspects who tried to escape after being arrested in the course of their operation in Eleme.

Mr Ben Ugwuegbulam, the command’s Spokesman, stated this in Port Harcourt on Thursday in a text message he sent to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said the suspects were initially arrested by the Anti-robbery patrol team in Eleme Local Government.

The spokesman said the patrol team arrested the suspects following a distress call that a gang of the armed robbers had attacked a residential house in Eleme town.

Ugwuegbulam said the patrol team rushed to the scene and intercepted the suspects on a Qlink motorbike as they were speeding out of the building.

The spokesman said that the suspects were searched and one locally-made revolver pistol, .9mm ammunition and one expended bullet shell were recovered from the gang.

Ugwuegbulam said that the anti-robbery team was taking the gang to the police station in their patrol vehicle when they ‘’jumped down from the vehicle.

‘’They were given a hot chase by the patrol team and when it was impossible to re-arrest them, they were fired at to stop them from escaping,’’ he said.

  • Before police bungle Funsho Williams case

Before police bungle Funsho Williams case

The public outcry against his murder was awesome. The public was aghast that he could be killed right inside his bedroom with his police aides not too far away. Where were the policemen when their charge was killed? Were they in the know of the dastardly act? Who could have done it and why? These were some of the questions people asked. We also asked the same questions in this column on August 1, 2006, five days after Funsho Williams was killed in his Ikoyi, Lagos home.

We warned then that the case should not be allowed to go the way of similar murders like those of Chief Bola Ige and Dele Giwa, to mention a few. Seven years down the line, what we are now hearing about the case from the police is not edifying at all. Despite our warning six years ago, the police may fail to bring the suspected killers to book, going by the latest development in their trial. On Monday, the police told Justice Adeniyi Adebajo of the Lagos High Court that some evidence vital to the prosecution of the case had been destroyed. How?

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ovie Oyokomino, who is in charge of forensics at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, told the court: ‘’The perishable evidence such as blood samples as well as the vitreous humour of the eye went bad due to interrupted power supply in the course of refrigerating’’. What a way of prosecuting a case. The police like every other establishment in this country know that we don’t have a reliable power system. This is why organisations rely on generators in carrying out their operations. So, the police should have looked for alternative means of preserving this vital evidence. Why rely on the unreliable public power system when they could have used generator 24/7 to preserve this proof?

What the police have done shows that they are not serious about unmasking the killers. They are just paying lip-service to the matter so that the world will see them as working. For God sake, this is a murder case, which should be proved beyond all reasonable doubts. The police should not give room for any doubt, because any iota of doubt will be resolved in the favour of the accused. If tomorrow, the court frees the accused, we know who to hold responsible. As if we knew, we warned against toying with this case in this piece entitled : Who killed Funsho Williams? Seven years ago :

The outrage against his assassination is understandable. In his lifetime, Funsho Williams, an engineer and politician, was a gentleman to the core. He was one of the few politicians around who played the game according to the rules: no hard tackles and no mudslinging. His disposition made many wonder what he was doing in the shark – infested pool of Nigeria politics. Williams was always cool, calm and calculated. Where many were losing their heads, he usually kept his. He was a perfect gentleman who gave a lie to the claim that politics is not for refined people.

A well – heeled gentleman who reached the apogee of his career as permanent secretary in the Lagos State Ministry of Works before he retired, Williams’ ambition was to govern the state. But each time he tried to achieve this dream, he failed. These failures did not deter him, rather they emboldened him to pursue his ambition with renewed vigour. His passion to govern the state of his origin knew no bounds. Williams was not ready to allow any other post stand between him and the office of governor. No other office mattered to him. Because of his passion for the gubernatorial seat, he rejected offers of senatorial seat and ministerial appointment. That was the extent of his love for the governorship post.

As a patient person, Williams was ready to wait for God’s appointed time to be governor. This was why when he lost the governorship ticket of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in 1999, he refused to accept any form of compensation when elders of the party locked both men up in a room and asked them to resolve their differences. Where some in his position would have come up with a long list of demands, Williams reportedly asked Tinubu for nothing. He was said to have maintained that the only thing he wanted was to become the governor of the state. When Tinubu reported the outcome of their meeting to AD elders, they advised that he should make some of Williams’ supporters commissioners. And this was how Dr. Leke Pitan and Mrs Kemi Nelson found their way into Tinubu’s cabinet.

Another politician who benefited immensely from his relationship with Williams was former Works Minister, Mr Seye Ogunlewe. Williams had after losing to Tinubu been offered a senatorial seat. Expectedly, he turned it down and asked that Ogunlewe should take up the offer. In 2003 when he again lost to Tinubu in that year’s governorship election, Williams was offered ministerial appointment. Again and not quiet surprisingly, he rejected the offer.

The lot again fell on Ogunlewe to pick up the job. Williams’ was not prepared to allow any other position distract him. Perhaps his dream might have come true in 2007. Nobody can say. Suffice to say now that this is not going to be as Williams was killed last Thursday in his Ikoyi, Lagos home.

His assassination falls into the same pattern of killings that we have witnesssed in the country in the past five years. Bola Ige. Marshall Harry. Aminasoari Dikibo. Barnabas and Amaka Igwe. A common thread runs through the way these people were killed. Their killers finished them off and just vanished into thin air. Up till today, the killers remain at large and these assassinations remain unresolved. Will Williams’ case go the same way? The police are in a better position to answer this poser. This, however, should not be another unresolved murder case.

The only honour we can do the memory of Williams is to find his killers and the earlier this is done the better. By October 19, this year, it will be 20 years that Dele Giwa was killed by parcel bomb and we are still asking: who killed Dele Giwa? We hope we will not be asking who killed Williams 20 years after?

    Jonathan vs governors

May is going to be an interesting month. It is the month we have been waiting for to see how President Goodluck Jonathan and the governors will resolve their differences. Jonathan wants a change of guards at the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) led by Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State. The president is not hiding the fact that he no longer wants Amaechi in the saddle.

He has some governors with him, but they don’t have the number with which to achieve the president’s aim. Many of the governors are with Amaechi, at least, up to this moment. Amaechi enjoys the confidence of his colleagues, whether of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or of the opposition parties. For now, the president is finding it difficult to get all the governors, especially of the PDP on his side.

The opposition governors have made it clear that they are for Amaechi, come what may. The president is not relenting. So, it is going to be battle royale if the NGF election holds. Will it hold or will Amaechi be allowed to serve a second term without standing for election just as his predecessor, former Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki? Well, we wait to see what happens. Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu has given us an insight into what to expect.

He was quoted by a paper as telling his colleagues who are backing the president to remove Amaechi that : ‘’Let me tell you, 10 of you, even 20 of you cannot remove Amaechi. Go and tell him’’. You and I know who the him is. It is no other person than the president. As the adage goes, if you wish to talk to the deaf, you do so through his child, just as Muazu has done in this instance. But will the governors walk the talk or will they chicken out when the chips are down?

  • Police Commands to get surveillance helicopter – Jonathan

Towards reforming the Nigeria Police, the Federal Government has proposed to equip every State Police Command with helicopter in order to boost their air surveillance operations.

President Goodluck Jonathan made the promise while speaking at the 2013 Police week and commissioning of some police equipment at the Eagles Square, Abuja.
Stressing that the equipment will go a long way in checking criminal activities like armed robbery, kidnapping and facilitate prompt responses during emergencies, he charged the Police to ensure maintenance of the equipment and regular staff training in order to meet up with the current security challenges.

He also urged the policemen to respect the citizens while discharging their functions of protecting lives and property and fighting crimes.

Jonathan said: “I expect that these facilities will enhance police capability in prevention of crimes, and improving response time in emergency situation. It shall be instruments of justice and protection of all men of goodwill given as it will be deployed and utilised strategically to achieve and accelerate utmost result.”

“For us to continue to use these equipment, one thing I urge the police to do is the issue of maintenance. As a nation, we are not too good in maintaining what we have. Presently, that aspect is improving because my reaction to the arm forces, the navy, and the air force, we have gotten a very formidable team that are now maintaining their equipment.”

“The police should do the same so that these equipment will last the time they expected to last. Also, we must emphasise the need to train. For you to remain gallant, for you to remain functional in whatever you do, and especially in security tactics, training is vital.”

He went on: “You must train on the job, you must train with the equipment so that our men and women in police force will have confidence in themselves so that they will continue to operate as gallant men and women.”

“The police must be well equipped and kitted to protect us while on land, while in water and also in the air. Of course you see the helicopter we commission and I believe my commitment is that every state command must have a helicopter.”

“You have seen the commitment of government that is why we set up the special fund. A situation where armed robbers could takeover a place and operating for hours and no challenge must be a thing of the past. And that is why we want to invest in air power for the Nigerian police.” He added

The equipment commissioned yesterday include seven helicopters, 13  Amoured Personnel Carriers (APC), 275 patrol vehicles and  20 Toyota helux armoured pickup vans and other gadgets.

Extending condolences to the families of police men and women who lost their lives while on duty of securing the nation, President Jonathan, at the occasion, also presented Presidential awards to those who distinguished themselves in terms of courage, merit and post houmous awards.
