FCCPC, Police, traders clash at Lagos market

A team of Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) officials, accompanied by armed police and reporters, yesterday faced resistance from traders at the Daleko market in Mushin, Lagos.

Relying on intelligence reports, the FCCPC team had aimed to crack down on traders allegedly rebaging rice in various brand names and reproducing rice bags from firms that have left Nigeria since 2015, including Royal Stallion and Caprice rice.

The FCCPC alleged that rice bagged in the names of Royal Stallion, Mama Gold and Caprice companies were still being sold

FCCPC said: “Our surveillance has revealed this deceptive practice is potentially misleading consumers and violating consumer protection law.”

Despite evidence of alleged offences, the traders refused to cooperate with FCCPC officials, citing lack of notification to the market leader.

The resistance highlighted tensions between regulators and market stakeholders.

But, despite the resistance, the FCCPC team sealed a shop involved in the reproduction.

FCCPC Lagos Southwest Zonal Coordinator, Mrs. Magret Aboluwade, expressed disappointment at the illegal activities and vowed that the law would take its course.

Mrs. Aboluwade emphasised the commission’s commitment to protecting consumer rights, adding: FCCPC will continue to perform its duties, ensuring compliance with consumer protection laws.”

Similarly, the FCCPC sealed 10 shops in Abuja recently over rebagging of local rice as foreign brands and over unfair pricing .

According to the Commission, this practice is not only exploitative but also infringes on consumer rights and undermines economic integrity.

The FCCPC warned consumers to avoid purchasing these products as they are either expired or deceptively rebagged local rice sold at exorbitant price.

Operatives of the Bayelsa State Police Command have arrested six suspects in connection with the vandalism and theft of solar-powered street lights across the state.

The suspects were reportedly apprehended with stolen solar panels and iron-cutting tools. They are currently assisting the police with investigations to uncover those allegedly involved in purchasing the stolen items.

Speaking on the development, the State Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, confirmed the arrests and warned that the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

Delta police bust notorious kidnap gang, recover 247 rounds of live ammunition

In compliance with the directives of the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, on intelligence-led operations and proactive policing, the command said it has recorded significant operational success in dismantling a high-profile criminal syndicate with cross-border operations across Delta and Edo states.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, Superintendent of Police (SP) Bright Edafe, said on Thursday that in response to a series of intelligence reports regarding a planned abduction of high-profile individuals in Sapele, Oghara, and surrounding areas of the state, the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) executed a strategic operation against a notorious criminal syndicate led by Owei Abebo, alias Adusa.

He said this suspect had been under surveillance since 2021.

The PPRO said on July 19, 2025, in the early hours, operatives led by ASP Julius Robinson arrested Peter Benson, a 35-year-old suspect from Kwale in the Ndokwa Local Government Area of the state.

Benson is believed to be a spiritual herbalist involved in ritual preparations for the criminal gang.

Edafe said following intensive interrogation, Benson provided information that led the operatives to Joseph Saniyo, a 63-year-old from Ajakorama Community in Ovia South-West LGA, Edo State.

He said Saniyo was identified as the primary spiritualist for the syndicate and was found in possession of three live tortoises and various fetish items used in criminal rituals.

The spokesman said acting on leads from Benson and Saniyo, CP-SAT operatives proceeded to Oghara, where they successfully apprehended the ring leader, Owei Abebo (42), along with his accomplices: Ebi Maye (41) from Poloborbor Community, Warri North LGA, Delta State and Happy Obegha (39) from Aakoroma Community, Ovia North-East LGA, Edo State

He said during a thorough search of their hideouts, the operatives recovered 247 rounds of live ammunition for a Submachine Gun (SMG).

He said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were plotting coordinated kidnappings across Sapele and Oghara, which were successfully thwarted following their arrest.

He asserted that this operation demonstrated a proactive approach by law enforcement to dismantle a criminal syndicate and prevent potential kidnappings, ensuring the safety of high-profile individuals in the affected regions.

“Further investigations are ongoing to uncover additional details and potential accomplices linked to the syndicate,” Edafe said.

In another operation, the spokesman said the command, in a combined effort with the Nigerian Army, recorded a significant breakthrough in the fight against Internet fraud and other cyber-related offences.

Edafe said on July 21 2025, at about 17:45 hours, operatives of Ekpan Division, acting on credible intelligence in a combined effort with the Nigerian Army, carried out a coordinated raid on a location within Post Housing Estate, Effurun, where suspected Internet fraud and terrorism financing activities were taking place.

He said the operation resulted in the arrest of one Kelvin Odini, aged 33, and one hundred and eighty-three (183) others engaged in online fraud-related activities.

Edafe stated, “Items recovered from the suspects include: Two hundred and seventy-three (273) assorted laptops, Ninety-seven (97) assorted smartphones, one (1) iPad, one (1) table phone, nine (9) laptop chargers, and two (2) Wi-Fi routers.

“All suspects and exhibits have been taken into custody as investigations intensify to unravel the extent of their operations and apprehend other accomplices.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, commends the gallant officers involved in these operations for their professionalism, bravery, and swift response to credible intelligence.

“He reiterates the command’s readiness to intensify intelligence operations, surveillance, and community engagement to ensure that Delta State remains uninhabitable for criminal syndicates and individuals engaged in activities inimical to peace and development.”

Police pension protest: Operators seek salary increase, promotion

With threats by embattled police retirees to continue their protest against poor pension by August 1, the Pension Fund Operators Association of Nigeria (PenOp) has recommended better work conditions and improved pay packages and promotions for police personnel as a way to boost their pension income at retirement.

According to PenOp, the solution to improving pension payout of retirees of the Nigeria Police Force lies not in leaving the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) but in strengthening their work conditions.

PenOp Chief Executive Officer, Oguche Agudah, told The Nation that more recommendations have been made to the police authority to ensure better welfare of police when they retire.

He said: “The conversation around police pensions must shift from simply questioning the CPS to examining the underlying root causes of dissatisfaction. If we are serious about securing better retirement outcomes for our police officers, then some main issues must be addressed.

“There must be a comprehensive review of police remuneration, saying this is overdue. Higher salaries would naturally lead to higher pension contributions and better retirement benefits under the CPS.

“The promotion system within the force must be reformed to ensure that officers move up the ranks faster, leading to increased earnings throughout their careers.

“Officers need to understand how the pension system works, the benefits of compounding, and how personal savings and voluntary contributions can complement their mandatory CPS savings.

“The government and police force can explore structured additional benefit schemes as is done by other self-funding agencies to reduce the contribution burden for the police force, while increasing their payout in retirement.”

He stressed that it is important to remember that any pension system must rest on three pillars which include adequacy, affordability, and sustainability.

“The Defined Benefit Scheme failed on all three fronts, we have experienced their failure before and seen its consequences. Pensions when, unpaid, the system became unaffordable, and it ultimately collapsed under its own weight. The CPS, while not perfect, stands tall on these three pillars. It is sustainable, transparent, and provides room for adequacy if supported with the right policies.

“The desire for a secure and dignified retirement for members of the Nigerian Police Force is valid and urgent. However, the way forward is not to abandon a working system, but rather to improve the factors that determine its success. Policymakers must engage with facts, fiscal realities, and the lived experiences of officers, not just sentiment. In doing so, Nigeria can strengthen the retirement experience for its workers and provide its police officers with the dignity they deserve both in service and in retirement,” he added.

Police, Immigration pledge enhanced collaboration against criminality

To ensure that wanted or suspected criminals do not evade justice by fleeing from the country, the Lagos Police Command and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in the state have pledged enhanced collaboration.

Specifically, both agencies committed to improved intelligence sharing to prevent fugitives of the law from using Lagos as an escape route from the country.

The renewed commitment was made at the command headquarters in Ikeja when the Lagos State Comptroller of NIS, Aliyu Akadri, who assumed duty recently, visited the Commissioner of Police (CP) Olohundare Jimoh.

Speaking at the event, Akadri said the federal government has provided the NIS with sophisticated equipment to monitor movements.

“Once we get an order from the court that a criminal is wanted or they are looking for a person, we remain on alert.

“The government has assisted us in so many ways by making our job very easy. There is no way a criminal can sneak out of the country now that we have acquired some new systems.

“Any criminal that has a mind of fleeing the country should better have a rethink because he will surely be apprehended, even if he or she takes the illegal route,” he said.

On his visit to the Police Command, the NIS boss acknowledged the need for cooperation and collaboration among security agencies.

“If there’s any intelligence report we gather from ourselves, I can easily send it to my brother. If there’s anything that you can assist us with, at least my brother can call me.

“We are working for the same goal. The goal is to protect Nigeria.”

In his response, CP Jimoh noted that both agencies have been working together for decades, assuring Akadri of his support.

“I want to equally assure you that during your time, we are going to strengthen that cordial working relationship to take it to a higher level and ensure that we achieve the objective for which the government has set us up. We will equally ensure that the policy and programme of government on internal security are fully implemented.

“Working together, we are going to push coordination between us to ensure that the people of Lagos and visitors enjoy the best of security cooperation between the two agencies.

“We are on the same page as foot soldiers to work together in a collaborative manner. The police will collaborate with you. So, there is not going to be anything different. Anything that you are going to see that will be different is an improvement in what we have on the ground.

“I want to assure you that your tour of duty here will be very successful, building on the existing cordial relationship that we have been enjoying with each other,” he said.

Police arrest suspected cultist for shooting football fans in Ondo

A suspected cultist who allegedly opened fire on football fans in Ondo town has been arrested by operatives of the Ondo State Police Command.

The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, who disclosed this on Tuesday in Akure, said the suspect was apprehended at his hideout following sustained intelligence gathering and a tactical operation by the command.

Although the suspect’s identity remains undisclosed due to ongoing investigations, preliminary findings link him to a violent cult clash earlier this year, which resulted in the deaths of rival group members in Ondo town.

The CP further revealed that the suspect was involved in the July 13, 2025, shooting at Template Bar and Club, Ondo, during the live broadcast of the FIFA Club World Cup final match between Chelsea and PSG.

The suspect, now in custody, is said to be cooperating with investigators as police intensify efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang.
