The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old cybercrime suspect known as Umar Yau, a.k.a. Snake, following a high-tech manhunt that exposed his online fraud activities and identity theft operations dating back to 2019.

The arrest came after an online businesswoman, Mrs. Fatimah Faiz Ali Bawahab, petitioned the police, alleging persistent impersonation and online scams conducted using her name and photographs.

The fraudster had reportedly been duping unsuspecting victims through fake Facebook accounts and fraudulent bank details.

In 2022, a man identified as Nafiu Muhd first raised the alarm when he was swindled after transferring money to a First Bank account bearing the name Hansatu Yau.

Following the transaction, he was blocked, prompting suspicion of a notorious scam ring.

Matters worsened in early 2023 when several individuals contacted Mrs. Bawahab, claiming they had been defrauded by a Facebook account using her identity.

Payments were traced back to the same Hansatu Yau bank account, confirming a pattern of coordinated impersonation and fraud.

The Ondo State Police Command on Thursday said it had apprehended no fewer than 46 youths over an alleged cult related clash in Ondo town.

In a statement issued by the police public relations officer in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, said that the arrest came after the killing of an alleged drug baron in the town, Bode Akinsiku, whose gruesome murder had now been linked to cult war.

Ayanlade explained that intelligence gathering indicated that the late Akinsiku had been using proceeds from his illicit drug trade to finance cult activities, sponsor initiations, and supply arms to cult groups, thereby fueling violence in Ondo town.

According to him, the suspects were arrested during a raid of some areas in the town.

  • NIWA boss denies meeting with police to destabilise Osun

NIWA boss denies meeting with police to destabilise Osun

The Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Asiwaju Bola Oyebamiji, has denied meeting with the police to destabilise Osun State ahead of the 2026 guber poll.

Oyebamiji, one of the leading guber aspirants within the All Progressives Congress(APC), reacting to alleged meeting with one ACP Adekunle Ige of MOPOL 39 Commander, described the allegation as outright falsehood to smear him.

A statement by his campaign coordinator, Adebayo Adedeji on Thursday said he was not planning to heat up the polity of Osun State using the police as reported in some sections of the media.

“The accusation is false and is part of the grand plot to distract Oyebamiji from his lofty 2026 project of delivering the state from the doldrum it was plunged into by the clumsy government in Abeere.

“We equally sense that the power mongers have seen the 2026 defeat staring themselves in the face, thus preparing the ground of excuse for the outcome of the failure awaiting them next year.”

He said that since Oyebamiji declared his gubernatorial intention, the NIWA boss has come under false attacks from the camp of the incumbent governor of Osun State.

“Oyebamiji did not meet the named police officer, or any officer for that matter, for any purpose or for the purpose of further breaching the fragile security architecture in the state or withdrawing the security Details of the Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs) in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun as touted by the news outlet.

“It is glaring that the evil forces behind the smear campaign against Oyebamiji are those either being haunted by the cruelty of their immediate past or troubled by the towering profile of our political megastar whose resolve, to set Osun loose from the manacles of the economic plunderers feeding fat on the commonwealth of the people of the state, is daily strengthened by the enthusiastic citizens.”

He told The Nation that part of the security deployment was stop-and-search points at strategic locations to identify vehicles that might want to move around with incriminating items.

“We are also carrying out special raids of criminal hideouts and black spots, as well as a show of force involving joint police patrol

“All these actions are not to scare law abiding citizens but to let criminals know that security in Lagos is awake and ready to protect the state.

“As at 8am, the state was calm and no protesters have been seen at any of the locations. Citizens are going about their lawful businesses without hindrance.

“We shall continue to carry out vehicular patrols of the nooks and crannies of the state while waterway patrols by the Marine Police are also ongoing.

“I can tell you that Lagos State so far is calm and peaceful. Our meeting yesterday with the leadership of some of the CSOs was fruitful,” he said.

While some of the groups in the interest of peace and security agreed to withdraw from the planned subversive protest and rejoice with the rest of the masses, others insisted they would carry on with their agitations but promised it would be peaceful.

The meeting, according to the command, was part of its pro-active measures and sensitization of the promoters of the protest on the evil associated with attempts to subvert the government.

“It was agreed that all the groups must ensure concern for public safety and security in their activities during the Democracy Day celebration. Half of the CSOs present at the meeting assured the command that they were going to celebrate with all Nigerians on the occasion of June 12 Democracy Day, while others affirmed that they will carry out the protest in an orderly manner without disturbance to public peace and safety.

Operatives of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, have arrested a self-proclaimed blogger, Nurudeen Adegbenro, in Lagos for allegedly blackmailing the chairman of Agege local government, Alhaji Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi.

Adegbenro was arrested on Wednesday morning in Agege shortly after leading early morning Muslim prayers as an Imam at a mosque on Oredapo Street, where he resides.

The arrest followed a petition submitted on June 2, 2025, by T.C. Eze Chambers on behalf of Chief Egunjobi.

Speaking on the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer at FCID Alagbon, Superintendent Mayegun Aminat, said the petition alleged cyberstalking, bullying, scandalous publications, threats to life, incitement of the public, and conduct likely to cause a breakdown of law and order.

The petition accused Adegbenro and other unnamed individuals of operating multiple Facebook and Instagram accounts—either directly or through proxies—to malign, threaten, and defame the council chairman.

She wrote: “A detailed written petition was submitted to the AIG, FCID Annex, on the 2nd of June 2025 by T.C. Eze Chambers, acting on behalf of Chief Ganiu Kola Egunjobi. The petition concerns a case involving cyberstalking, bullying, scandalous publications, threats to life, incitement of the public, and conduct likely to cause a breakdown of law and order.

“The allegations are made against Mr. Adegbenro Nurudeen and other unidentified individuals, who are said to be using various Facebook and Instagram accounts—as well as those operated by their proxies—to malign, scandalize, threaten, and bully Chief Egunjobi.

“It is further stated in the petition that the cyberstalking began after Mr. Adegbenro allegedly approached Chief Egunjobi, seeking an appointment as his media assistant, which the Chief declined. Following the escalation of these incidents, the matter was referred to the Public Relations Office, and Mr. Adegbenro was subsequently invited for questioning.”

Investigations revealed that the online attacks began after Adegbenro allegedly approached Egunjobi for a media assistant position, which the chairman declined.

Sources within the council disclosed that background checks by the local government’s information office found Adegbenro’s claims to be fraudulent. The website in question later published a disclaimer disowning him.

“He used a letterhead from hotnewsnaija.ng to solicit funds, but verification showed he had no official link to the platform. In fact, there is now a disclaimer on the site exposing him,” one official said.

Police said investigations are ongoing to identify other individuals potentially connected to the alleged blackmail and cyberstalking campaign.
