Police uncover another self-kidnap case in Ekpoma

Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have uncovered another case of self-kidnapping in Ekpoma, Esan West local government area.

Last week, the police arrested one Obehi Odine for demanding N10m ransom after she abducted herself.

The feat was recorded after the Police Commissioner, Monday Agbonika, reorganised the Ekpoma Police Division.

Edo Police spokesman, Eno Ikoedem, said the new self-kidnapping case was recorded in Emaudo, Ekpoma, where a vulcanizer, 34-year-old Idris Isiaka, staged his own kidnap.

Ikoedem said the suspect used a blogger to circulate news of his abduction and demanded a ransom of ₦12m.

She said Idris’ brother sold his property and paid part of the ransom money, which Idris shared with his accomplices, Mohammed Saliu and Godwin Mohammed.

The accomplices, according to Ikoedem, are currently at large while the suspect has confessed to the crime.

She said Idris would be arraigned in court after the investigation.

According to her, “The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of this growing trend of individuals staging their own kidnapping and making false ransom demands, particularly within Ekpoma and its environs. In response, the Command has intensified intelligence-led investigations and enforcement actions to curb this disturbing development.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, strongly warns individuals engaging or contemplating self-kidnapping, false abduction claims, or ransom-related frauds to desist from such acts as they not only constitute serious criminal offences, but also create unnecessary panic and divert critical, scarce security resources from genuine complaints.  The Edo State Police Command is committed to stamping out this ugly trend. Anyone who engages in such callous acts will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.”

  • SEC, police forge alliance to tackle ₦100tn market fraudsters

SEC, police forge alliance to tackle ₦100tn market fraudsters

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has sounded a stern warning against “shadow” financial predators who deceive citizens with promises of 200% returns within 30 days.

This alert came as the Commission secured a strategic partnership with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to safeguard the nation’s capital market, which recently hit a historic ₦100 trillion capitalization milestone.

During a high-level meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, the Director General of the SEC, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, met with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to address the rising tide of sophisticated investment scams. Dr. Agama pointed out that these bad actors often hide their fraudulent intentions behind complex financial jargon.

“They cloak their deceit in the glamorous but misunderstood language of cryptocurrency and forex trading. They target the vulnerable, the optimistic, and the simply unsuspecting, leaving behind a trail of shattered lives, depleted pensions, and broken trust. This is not just a financial crime; it is a social menace that erodes public confidence in our entire financial system,” Dr. Agama said.

The Director General described the SEC as the “sentinel at the gate” of the formal markets but noted that regulatory oversight alone is insufficient to stop criminals who operate outside legal boundaries. He indicated that a gap exists between identifying these scammers and bringing them to justice, a space that the new partnership aims to eliminate.

“This is where our authority, as the SEC, meets its necessary complement: your power, your reach, and your mandate. The Nigeria Police Force is the primary law enforcement agency with the national presence, the investigative muscle, and the constitutional authority to track, apprehend, and bring these criminals to justice. Where we identify the illegality and the regulatory breach, you possess the apparatus for criminal investigation, arrest, and prosecution,” he told the IGP.

To modernize the fight against these syndicates, the SEC proposed a collaborative framework built on joint intelligence, capacity building, and a national public awareness campaign. Dr. Agama specifically called for a dedicated SEC-NPF task force to act as a “rapid-response unit” against emerging frauds. He also requested a formal Memorandum of Understanding with the Police Cyber Security Unit to monitor digital threats.

“Mr. Inspector General, the fight against financial crime is a fight for the soul of our economy. It is a fight for the widow who has lost her savings, the youth lured by fake crypto promises, and the retiree seeking a safe return. The SEC cannot win this fight alone. The Police should not have to decipher these complex schemes without specialist support. Together, however, we form an impenetrable shield,” the SEC DG added.

Responding to the proposal, IGP Kayode Egbetokun expressed the full readiness of the Force to back the Commission’s enforcement drive. He acknowledged that the SEC’s success is a pillar of the broader national economic recovery strategy.

“Your role in the Securities and Exchange Commission is very crucial to the Nigerian Economy, and with our supervision and support from the government, we will ensure economic recovery and growth. If the police unit in SEC is strengthened, it is going to make so much impact in your enforcement drive,” the IGP stated.

The Police Chief also took the opportunity to celebrate the capital market’s recent performance, noting that the crossing of the ₦100 trillion market capitalization mark is a monumental achievement for the country.

“That is a very huge one, and on behalf of the entire police force, I congratulate you on this great achievement. I am happy to also hear from you that you are ready to strengthen the police enforcement unit that are attached to the SEC. On this note, I approve the collaboration with the Cyber Security Centre of the NPF,” Egbetokun concluded.

The meeting ended with a mutual pledge to send a clear message to scammers that Nigeria’s investors are now under a unified shield of protection.

Police deploy marine, land patrols, gadgets to secure Third Mainland Bridge

To ensure real-time surveillance, detection, and prevention of crimes on the Third Mainland Bridge and surroundings, the Lagos State Police Command has deployed marine and ground forces for 24-hour patrols.

The patrol teams would work with the state-of-the-art control room built and donated to the police command by the Federal Ministry of Works.

Test-running the facilities on Wednesday, which have been integrated into the state’s security communication architecture, the Commissioner of Police (CP) Olohundare Jimoh, said it would aid in real-time prevention and detection of crimes, including traffic-related offences, acts of vandalism underneath or on top of the bridge.

CP Jimoh said the deployment of advanced cameras with a range upto Victoria Island and parts of the mainland would further enhance safety and security in the state, warning those who might want to jump into the lagoon, and reckless drivers to desist from such acts as they would be caught.

According to the police boss, the control centre, though the fifth in Lagos, has hi-tech equipment that enables integrated policing capable of addressing contemporary security challenges.

According to him, a network of high-tech cameras has been installed at strategic locations across the state and is being monitored from a central control room by specially trained officers.

“The system enables real-time monitoring of public spaces, major roads, transport corridors, and critical infrastructure. Once suspicious activity is detected, information is relayed in real-time to officers on the ground for swift response.

“We now operate a dedicated control group where activities are monitored continuously. Once anything unusual is noticed, whether on the road, in public transport areas, or within sensitive facilities, our teams are alerted instantly to take action,” he said.

To further enhance operational capacity, Jimoh said that the command had taken delivery and deployed two new patrol vehicles, donated by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund.

“These vehicles are expected to improve response time and mobility during emergencies,” he said, demonstrating how the vehicles, patrol boats, and control room work in synergy for seamless operation.

CP Jimoh said marine security had received a major boost with the deployment of a fully equipped patrol boat from the Federal Government to secure Lagos waterways, terminals, and waterfront facilities.

“The boats, supported by police personnel and surveillance technology including drones, will operate round the clock to deter criminal activities on water,” he said.

In addition, the commissioner highlighted the effectiveness of the upgraded radio communication network, which allows officers to respond promptly to distress calls and coordinate operations more efficiently across the state.

The police boss expressed gratitude to the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for donating the control room facility to the command, and for his pledge to provide maintenance support to keep the place functioning.

He also thanked the Lagos State Government, especially Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Executive Secretary (ES) LSSTF, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan, for their continued support in providing critical security infrastructure, which has placed the state at the forefront of internal security preparedness in Nigeria.

“Our capacity to protect life and property has significantly improved.

These cameras, vehicles, boats, and communication systems represent a major step forward in the security architecture of Lagos State and, by extension, Nigeria,” he said.

The Commissioner assured residents that the command remained committed to professionalism, effective service delivery, and the continuous use of modern technology to make Lagos safer for all.

Abayomi said the arrest followed an intense investigation into a suspected trafficking syndicate operating at the Oda town in Akure South Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, trouble began in June 2024 when a 30-year-old Togolese national, John Apiah, relocated to Oda to work as a hair stylist.

He said Apiah was said to have met two young women, Blessings Assiah, 22, and Laro Larisa, 21, with whom he later rented a one-room and parlour self-contained apartment belonging to a 40-year-old landlord, Owoeye.

Kidnapping: Police arrest suspected kidnappers after overhauling Ekpoma Division

Men of the Edo State Police Command have made have made a breakthrough in the bid to cleanse Ekpoma of kidnappers after the reorganisation of the Ekpoma Division.

Edo Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, who relocated to Ekpoma for the past five days approved the posting of CSP Tomofe Nwabueze to assume office as the new Divisional Police Officer (DPO).

Violent protest broke out in Ekpoma last weekend over incessant kidnappings and killings by kidnappers.

Edo Police Spokesman, Eno Ikoedem, said the first breakthrough was the arrest of an 18-year- old girl, Obehi Odine, who kidnapped herself and demanded N10m ransom.

She said the suspect was kidnapped Monday along Old INEC Road, Ekpoma, on January 12th and the new DPO swung into action, deployed operational resources to track the caller.

Ikoedem said technical intelligence and field investigations led to the arrest of the suspect, which later revealed a case of self-kidnapping.

“The suspect, one Obehi Odine ‘F’, aged 18, was arrested for staging her own kidnapping and demanding a ransom of Ten Million Naira (₦10,000,000). She has confessed to the crime, admitting that the incident was deliberately fabricated to extort money.”

Ikoedem said a bush combing operation in Ubiaja, revealed a concealed forest enclave.

She said the a suspected kidnapping and logistics base, was stormed and 11 male suspects believed to be members of an organised kidnapping syndicate were arrested.

Exhibits recovered, according to her, were 24 dane guns, 17 cutlasses, three battle axes, gun powder, torchlights, mobile phones, solar panels, assorted charms, one Daylong motorcycle, and the sum of ₦209,700.00 cash.

  • Police intensify clampdown on digital crimes, upskill detectives

Police intensify clampdown on digital crimes, upskill detectives

To equip investigators with the right skills to detect latest digital and cybercrimes that undermine national security, the Nigeria Police Force yesterday began a three-day training for specialised units.

The training, being conducted in partnership with a private firm, HFM, drew partiticoants from Cybercrime Unit, Anti-Fraud Section, INTERPOL National Central Bureau, Anti-Money Laundering Units, Police Special Fraud Unit, forensic and intelligence components, as well as state and zonal criminal investigation departments.

Officers involved in counter-terrorism financing and ransom payment tracking were also drafted in reflecting the links between financial crimes and violent offences.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, who declared the training open, said the training was critical to national security.

He noted that financial crimes were fuelling terrorism, kidnapping, cyber fraud and other organised criminal activities.

The IGP, who was represented by the Commissioner of Police (CP), Training at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, Edwin Eloho, said the rapid growth of digital trading platforms, online forex markets and cross-border transactions had created new opportunities for fraud, illicit financial flows and organised crime, making specialised investigative skills indispensable.

“Financial crime is a major enabler of violent crime. Terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, arms trafficking and transnational organised crime all depend on illicit financial flows for recruitment, logistics and operations,” said Egbetokun.

He stressed that enhanced capacity to investigate digital trading abuses, forex fraud, money laundering and Ponzi schemes was a direct investment in public safety and national security.

Egbetokun explained that the training was designed to equip officers with a practical understanding of the digital financial ecosystem, legitimate trading practices, emerging fraud typologies and key investigative red flags, to help distinguish lawful investment activity from criminal deception.

He described the programme as part of the NPF’s broader policing reforms, which place manpower development and technological competence at the centre of operational effectiveness in a rapidly digitalising crime environment.

“Over the three days, participants will be trained in digital trading systems, forex market operations, fraud detection techniques, investigative methodologies, intelligence analysis and inter-agency collaboration,” he said, urging participants to apply the knowledge gained to real-life cases and to cascade the expertise within their respective units to improve investigative outcomes and public confidence.

Egbetokun also commended HF Markets Nigeria Limited for supporting the initiative and for its commitment to regulatory compliance, transparency and investor education, noting that effective policing in modern financial systems required structured public-private collaboration in line with global anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing standards.

Earlier, HFM’s Managing Director, Ope Abiola, said the training was conceived to address the gap between the rapid evolution of financial markets and public understanding, which often complicates investigations.

Abiola noted that digital trading and forex transactions frequently sit at the intersection of finance, technology and human behaviour, making related disputes complex and rarely straightforward.

“The objective is to provide clarity on how digital trading systems work, distinguish legitimate market loss from criminal deception, and define the responsibilities of traders, brokers and other market participants,” he said.

The programme, he said, was structured to be neutral and evidence-based, focusing on practical frameworks rather than opinions, to help investigators avoid criminalising legitimate market activity while identifying genuine wrongdoing.

The training, he added, would be deemed successful if participants left with clearer tools for separating fraud from failure and evidence from allegation.

  • Police summon ex-Rivers SSG Danagogo over alleged plot to assassinate Wike

Police summon ex-Rivers SSG Danagogo over alleged plot to assassinate Wike

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has invited a former Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Tammy Wenike Danagogo, to Abuja for questioning over an alleged plot to assassinate the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The invitation, issued by the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), followed a leaked phone conversation allegedly linked to the purported assassination plan.

An invitation letter dated January 9 from the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team, Force Intelligence Department, Abuja, directed Danagogo to appear at the IRT complex in the Guzape District on Thursday, January 15, at 10 a.m. He is expected to report to CSP Hillary Ugwuanyi and his team.

“This office is inviting you over an ongoing investigation, to appear in person to shed light on some information,” the letter read.

The development comes days after operatives of the Inspector-General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team arrested a Port Harcourt–based medical doctor and pastor, Dr. Tombari Joseph Gbeneol, in connection with the alleged plot.

Security sources said Gbeneol, founder of Life Forte Chapel Church, was apprehended after investigators intercepted a recorded phone conversation purportedly between him and Danagogo.

The discussion reportedly referenced plans to engage Israeli nationals to execute the assassination and allegedly included suggestions to seek funding from Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

“The content of the call was considered a grave national security threat,” a senior security source said, adding that the intelligence prompted immediate action by the IRT.

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the case.

“He is in our custody. Investigation is ongoing,” the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said on Monday.

The police described the summons as a fact-finding exercise, citing Section 53(2)(c) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, as the legal basis for the invitation.

Although the invitation letter did not mention Wike by name or provide details of the alleged offence, sources familiar with the investigation said the invitation was connected to a viral audio recording that has heightened political tensions in Rivers State.

Danagogo, a close ally of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, previously served as Secretary to the State Government during the political crisis in the state.

Online reports have linked him to the leaked audio purportedly discussing a plan to eliminate Wike, his long-time political rival.

While the police declined to disclose the identity of the suspect or provide further details, sources said detectives are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged plot and identify possible accomplices.

Sources also said the Police is taking the investigation seriously following the political crisis in Rivers State.
