    Cleric nabbed for defiling minor

The police in Ogun have arrested a 38-year-old cleric for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl.

The command’s spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police, Omolola Odutola, said this in a statement in Abeokuta yesterday. The suspect was said to be serving in a branch of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ijebu Igbo.

According to Odutola, the suspect committed the crime under the guise of performing spiritual cleansing for the victim.

She explained that the victim’s mother, a member of the cleric ‘s congregation, reported the incident at the Ijebu Igbo Divisional Police Station. Odutola said the mother had informed the police that the cleric deceitfully convinced her that a spiritual bath was necessary to avert a calamity for her daughter.

The police spokesperson added that during the spiritual bath at a river bank at 2:00 p.m yesterday, the suspect allegedly took advantage of the minor.

”The victim was, however, referred to Medicare Hospital, Ijebu Igbo, where medical evidence is being gathered to aid the ongoing investigation,” she said

Odutola, however, noted that findings indicated a disturbing level of neglect and lack of parental caution as the victim’s mother had entrusted her child to the suspect without due diligence.

She warned parents and guardians to protect their children from questionable persons, especially those who exploit religious beliefs for financial advantage.

Enforcement of third party insurance: FCT Police CP warns against extortion

    • …urges vehicle owners to comply with law

In line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has commenced the enforcement of the mandatory minimum Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance.

The FCT Commissioner of Police (CP), Olatunji Disu has cautioned officers against extortion.

All vehicle owners, the police said are required to possess a valid Third-Party Insurance policy before operating on public roads.

The police advised those without any form of insurance to get insured immediately to avoid penalties.

Third-party Insurance, according to a statement issued on Sunday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh is a mandatory policy designed to protect road users from financial losses due to accidents.

Adeh said: “It covers damages caused to another person’s vehicle, property, or bodily injury resulting from an accident involving the insured vehicle. This policy ensures that accident victims receive necessary compensation while reducing the financial burden on vehicle owners.

“The FCT Police Command warns that non-compliance with this legal requirement will attract strict enforcement measures. The enforcement is part of efforts to ensure adherence to road safety regulations and protect all road users”.

He also emphasized that no form of harassment or extortion of motorists would be tolerated.

    • …as CP FCT advises ladies to exercise caution when meeting unknown persons

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a 25-year-old woman, Promise Eze, from a suspected ritualist at a hotel in Wuse, Abuja.

According to the police, the suspect fled the scene and is currently on the run.

The incident occurred on January 31, 2025, at around 11:30 a.m., following a distress call from the hotel reporting suspicious activity in one of the rooms.

A statement issued on Sunday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh said; “The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has successfully rescued a young woman from the clutches of a suspected armed robber and ritualist, launching an immediate manhunt for the fleeing suspect.

“Responding swiftly, police operatives arrived at the scene and discovered a 25-year-old woman, Promise Eze, from Ebonyi State, tied to a small chair with her mouth covered in plaster. She was found unconscious and in distress. Officers acted immediately, freeing her from captivity and rushing her to Wuse District Hospital, where she was resuscitated.

“Preliminary investigations revealed a disturbing pattern of deception and violence. The victim had checked into the hotel a day earlier, on January 30, 2025, at about 7:00 AM, in the company of a man who identified himself as Emmanuel Okoro from Lagos State”.

However, Adeh said during police questioning, the victim disclosed that she had met the suspect online, where he introduced himself under the alias Michael Prince, claiming to be an oil company employee based in Delta State.

“Initially, he invited her to Delta, but after she declined, they agreed to meet in Abuja.

“Tragically, what was meant to be an innocent meeting turned into a harrowing ordeal. The suspect allegedly brandished a dagger, using it to threaten and subdue the victim before restraining her by tying her hands and legs and taping her mouth shut inside the bathroom.

“He then fled the scene, stealing her two mobile phones. Alarmingly, before escaping, the victim overheard him speaking to suspected accomplices over the phone, informing them that he was on his way to regroup before returning to the hotel to “finish the job.”

“Recognizing the gravity of this heinous act, the FCT Police Command has launched a full-scale manhunt for the suspect and is working tirelessly to ensure his immediate arrest. The Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Olatunji Disu, psc, strongly condemns this act of violence and urges residents—especially young women—to exercise caution when meeting individuals they do not know personally”, Adeh added.

The CP reassured the public that the FCT Police Command remains unwavering in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents.

He also called on anyone with relevant information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest to immediately contact the police through the following:

    Emergency Lines: 08032003913.

    Complaint Response Unit: 08107314192

Adeh said: “The FCT Police Command remains dedicated to safeguarding lives and properties and urges the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and cooperate with law enforcement to keep our communities safe”.

    • Say social media influencers misleading Nigerians on issuance of third party insurance

The police authorities yesterday warned their personnel not to see the enforcement of the Third Party Vehicle Insurance as a source for extorting motorists.

The enforcement commenced in most states yesterday except in a few places like Kano, Abia and Osun.

The Kano State Police Command expects to start its own enforcement later in the week.

The police commissioners in Akwa Ibom, Kwara, Ogun, Imo and Oyo states personally went round their state capitals to monitor compliance by motorists.

Major roads in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, were relatively free yesterday as some motorists, who apparently had not complied, left their vehicles at home to avoid seizure by the police.

The State Police Command had met with stakeholders including the media, labour leaders and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) as part of the sensitization campaign.

Some groups had requested that the enforcement date be shifted from February 1 to a later date to enable the police carry out more enlightenment campaign.

The chairman of Akwa Ibom State branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Sunny James, had requested during the stakeholders meeting convened by the command that the  enforcement date be postponed “until sufficient enlightenment had been undertaken”.

Addressing reporters after monitoring compliance, Commissioner of Police, Mr Baba Mohammed Azare, said the exercise had been seamless.

He warned that motorists without third party insurance would have their vehicles impounded.

His Plateau State counterpart, Emmanuel Adesina, warned his officers and men to avoid extorting motorists in the course of enforcing the order.

He observed that many of the vehicles operating within the state are not insured, saying “this tends to pose a significant challenge to road safety, and accident victims when the need for compensation arise.”

He asked all vehicle owners to immediately obtain a valid third-party insurance to avoid facing legal consequences.

Imo State Police Commissioner Aboki Danjuma warned officers against misconduct, saying severe sanctions awaited those found wanting.

He urged vehicle owners to ensure their insurance documents were up to date.

The enforcement team consists of Divisional Traffic Officers (DTOs), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) members and Imo State Internal Revenue Service staff.

Spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, Mansir Hassan said the enforcement became necessary as the insurance policy provides protection for road users against liabilities arising from accidents involving insured vehicles.

“This initiative aligns with existing laws and regulations governing safety for road users and vehicle insurance in Nigeria.

“The enforcement aims to ensure compliance with the compulsory insurance policy, which provides protection for road users against liabilities arising from accidents involving insured vehicles,” he said.

Oyo State Police Commissioner Ayodele Sonubi and the Area Commanders went round the state to monitor compliance with the directive.

Sonubi urged residents, particularly owners of vehicles within the state, to update all relevant documents, especially their third party insurance status to avoid sanctions.

There was nothing noticeable about the enforcement in Abia State yesterday. Policemen seen in Aba, the commercial nerve centre of the state, went about their normal duties.

The spokesperson of the Command, Maureen Chinaka, could not be reached as her phone rang out several times without any response.

The police in Kano State said they would commence the enforcement of third-party insurance among motorists later this week

Commissioner of Police, Salman Dogo Garba, told The Nation that they had engaged proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of the people of the state, following a threat alert received by the command.

The enforcement of third-party insurance for motorists was poor in Osun State yesterday.

Police presence on the roads, especially in Osogbo, the state capital, was negligible.

Efforts to speak with the Police Command through its spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, were abortive as she did not respond to calls made to her phone.

The Nation gathered that some vehicles were impounded on the first day of the enforcement yesterday owning to non-compliance by motorists.

Social media influencers misleading Nigerians on issuance of insurance policy, say police

Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi last night accused unnamed social media influencers of antagonising the police on the issuance and enforcement of the third party vehicle insurance policy.

Adejobi said that contrary to the allegation of the commentators, the Nigeria Police Force “does not issue third-party insurance.”

He added: “The responsibility for obtaining this mandatory insurance lies with vehicle owners through their respective insurance companies.

“Dissemination of accurate information is vital to avoid misleading the public, while misconceptions can eventually lead to non-compliance and potential legal repercussions for motorists.”

Most of the major roads in Akwa Ibom State have been deserted as the police began the enforcement of the third party insurance scheme on Saturday.

Prior to its enforcement, Akwa Ibom Police Command carried out engagements with stakeholders including the media, labour leaders and members  of the national union of road transport workers as part of the sensitization campaign.

He however directed motorists “to obtain their third-party insurance papers to avoid the impoundment of their vehicles,”  adding that the  enforcement exercise has commenced and is currently ongoing.

Azare explained that the enforcement of the directive by the IGP became necessary to ensure that motor vehicles were road worthy and in line with the laws of the country.
