    JUST IN: Policeman slumps, dies in Umuahia

    A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) attached to the Zone 9 Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) slumped and died on Thursday while having a meal at an eatery within the command premises in Umuahia, Abia state. 

    Sources revealed that the officer had just returned from an investigative operation with his team and decided to eat before resuming his duties.

    However, he reportedly began behaving strangely while eating and collapsed moments later. 

    His colleagues rushed him to the police clinic at the Central Police Station on Bende Road, Umuahia North Local Government Area, but found no medical personnel on duty.

    This prompted them to transfer him to the Federal Medical Center (FMC), Umuahia, where he was confirmed dead. 

    His body has been deposited at the FMC morgue.

    As of the time of this report, Zone 9 Headquarters has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.

    Soldier arrested for killing policeman

    The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of a soldier who allegedly stabbed a policeman to death in Lagos.

    The unnamed soldier was apprehended yesterday for allegedly killing Inspector Saka Ganiyu with AP/No 223409, attached to the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (TASKFORCE) around 7am, at the Volks area of Ojo.

    It was gathered that the Inspector who was on lawful enforcement duty, stopped the soldier alleged to have driven a white T4 commercial bus against traffic.

    The Nation learnt that the driver of the bus, who was later identified as a military personnel, was not in uniform and created a scene when the enforcement team tried to impound the bus.

    He was said to have put up a resistance, became violent before stabbing the Police Inspector on his right thigh.

    Spokesman for the Taskforce, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, confirmed the incident in a statement, adding that the policeman was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead.

    “Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Inspector Ganiyu was tragically pronounced dead.

    “The Lagos State Taskforce condemns this brutal and unwarranted attack on law enforcement officers who were dutifully carrying out their legal responsibilities to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and maintain public order in the state.

    “The incident has been escalated to the state Police Command for immediate investigation, and justice will be pursued for the loss of our dedicated officer.

    “The Lagos State Taskforce extends its deepest condolences to the family of Inspector Saka Ganiyu during this difficult time,” he said.

    Reacting to the incident, the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army said the soldier had been arrested.

    It said the incident was being investigated, describing it as unfortunate.

    Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Olabisi Ayeni, who confirmed the soldier’s arrest, said he had been handed over to the military police for investigation and further disciplinary procedures.

    “The incident is highly regrettable, given the division’s commitment to the Nigerian Army Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement.

    “The Nigerian Army has continuously sensitised its personnel not to engage in activities that would tarnish its image and bridge the trust with other security agencies as well as the civil populace. 

    “The General Officer Commanding 81 Division NA commiserates with the family of the deceased and the Nigeria Police on this unfortunate incident.

    “The division reassures the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken to ensure that justice is served.

    “We will continue to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure security of lives and property in line with the constitutional mandate of the Nigerian Army.”

    The mobile police officer, who was abducted around Kampani community in Bashar District of Wase local government area of Plateau State, has been found dead.

    The policeman was reportedly part of a security team fighting bandits in the area when he was ambushed and taken away.

    A soldier, who was also part of the team, managed to escape the attack.

    The abduction and subsequent murder of the policeman is the latest in a series of attacks by bandits in the Wase local government area.

    The police command is yet to react to the development as of the time of filing this report.

    Policeman arrested for alleged defilement of girl

    The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one of its officers for allegedly defiling a 17-year-old girl.

    The Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, has ordered an investigation into the accusation.

    In a statement, the commissioner assured the public that there would be no cover-up in the matter, emphasising that such actions are contrary to the Police’s code of conduct and professional ethics.

     “We assure Nigerians that the officer in question will face the full extent of police regulations and the law if found culpable,” he said.

    The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, reinforced the Command’s commitment to justice and ethical conduct. “We are dedicated to ensuring that justice is served, and the officer will be dealt with according to the law if found guilty,” he said.

    He further stated that the case has attracted significant public attention and concern, highlighting the importance of accountability within the police force. The public is keenly awaiting the outcome of the investigation, hoping for a just resolution to these disturbing allegations.

    “The Lagos State Police Command has promised to keep the public informed as the investigation progresses,” he said.

    Edo commissioner visits hospitalized soldiers, policeman shot by cultists

    Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, on Sunday, June 9, visited the Military Hospital in Benin to see the two soldiers and a policeman who were shot last week by suspected cultists in Okomu, Ovia Southwest Local Government Area of Edo.

    He also warned the criminals, particularly cultists terrorizing Edo residents, to cease their activities immediately or face the full weight of the law.

    Nehikhare pledged that the Edo state government would cover the medical expenses of the injured security operatives.

    He said: “It is not right in any way for security personnel to be attacked in any community in Edo State. A few weeks ago, we were all aware of what happened in neighboring Delta State, where many soldiers were killed by some youths. In Edo State, we have a bad case of cultism.

    “One of the shot soldiers is in a critical condition in the hospital. The gunboat that the security operatives were in, were destroyed and riddled with bullets. We do not want a situation where we will be losing soldiers and other security personnel to civilians or the reckless and dangerous cult groups.

    “We plead with our leaders, especially in Edo South Senatorial District, to rein in their children and wards, because the arms they are using are kept somewhere, and they are provided by somebody. 

    “It is a serious matter, and all Edo people, irrespective of political  affiliations, must support the state government in the fight against cultism and killings going on. Since January till date, we have lost 150 people in cult-related violence in Edo State.”

    He also urged residents of the state to continue to give peace a chance, and support the focused administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki, in order to finish well and strong on November 12 this year.

    Policeman kills colleague, commits suicide

    An Inspector of Police attached to the Rivers State Command, Nelson Abuante, has committed suicide after he reportedly killed his colleague, Monday Gbaramana.

    Inspector Abuante reportedly shot his colleague on Sunday at Nyogor-Lueku, Khana Local Government Area of the state.

    Both of them had gone to arrest a suspect in the community. Trouble however started when the suspect, Akere Akpobari, resisted arrest.

    In the ensuing melee, Inspector Abuante accidentally shot Inspector Gbaramana.

    Gbaramana sustained injuries and was immediately rushed to the hospital. The matter worsened when the vehicle conveying them ran out of petrol, leading to Gbaramana’s death.

    Once he realised this, Abuante turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.

    Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko said ‘the bodies have been deposited at the mortuary while investigations are on’.

  • How Osun Speaker was duped of N38m, by policeman

    A witness yesterday gave an account of how Osun State House of Assembly Speaker Timothy Owoeye was duped of N38 million by fraudsters.

    The witness, Police Sergeant Adetunji Adejare, gave the account at a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, the state capital.

    Adejare told the court that eight accused persons implicated in the matter – Kazeem Agbabiaka, AbdulRasheed Ojonla, Oyebode Femi, Babatunde Oluajo, Adebiyi Kehinde, Oyebamiji Oyeniyi, Ismaila Azeez and Awodunmola Kehinde – were arrested with a telephone tracker.

    The witness further testified that the investigation took the police to Imesi-Ile in Ekiti State, as well as Lagos and Abuja, the nation’s capital.

    Adejare, who works in the State Intelligent Bureau of the police command, said the investigative team were led to the shrine of one of the defendants at Arubiidi, Ile-Ife and Olojabala via Osunjela, where the complainant was subjected to “inhuman treatment”.

    The policeman told the court that the defendants explained the sharing formula of the ransom in their confessional statements.

    He said: “The complainant submitted a petition bordering on advanced fee fraud (419), conspiracy and threat to life to the Osun State Police Command on July 10, last year. We started investigation with tracking of the phone number of the first, second, third and fifth defendants.

    “We went to Oke-Imesi Ekiti, where the first defendant was arrested. He later led us to Ado-Ekiti, where the second respondent was arrested. We proceeded to Lagos State for the arrest of the third respondent, who had travelled to Abuja by flight. The Intelligent Response Team in Abuja eventually arrested him with a tracker.

    “The first defendant claimed to have bought a Toyota Highlander Jeep and the second defendant confessed to have used his own share to purchase the same type of Jeep but had not been delivered to him.”

    The police sergeant said Bamidele Tosin, who was said to be a motor dealer, was arrested through the help of the Director of AMK Motors in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

    He added: “The motor dealer confessed that the fourth defendant, Babatunde Oluajo, paid him in US dollars for the two jeeps of the first and second defendants.”

    The witness explained how the investigative team recovered dollar and naira, unregistered Toyota Highlander Jeep, single-barrelled gun, cartridges and other items in the home of the first, second, third and fourth defendants.

    He added that the sixth defendant was arrested for his role in the threat to life of the complainant and the sending of his nude video to police Sergeant Arawole Jimoh, who volunteered a statement that led to the arrest of the seventh and eighth defendants who had been using the video to extort money from friends and associates of the complainant.

    But attempt by the prosecution counsel, Moses Faremi, to tender the statements of the defendants was opposed by counsel tot eh accused persons.

    Messrs Kazeem Badmus, J. P. Jones, O. U. Yusuf and Chief A. Olodo, said the statements were signed by their clients under duress.

    The court adjourned the matter till July 1 for trial-within-trial.

     

  • Breaking: Abducted policeman found dead in forest

    The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Godwin Oshiogbuwe, that was abducted at Ubiaja, Esan South East local government has been found dead.

    His body was found in a forest on Ubiaja-Ewohimi-Agbor road by a police tactical team in a pursuit of the kidnappers.

    Police sources said he was killed because the kidnappers discovered him to be a policeman through his police identification card and pictures in his mobile phone.

    Late DSP Oshiogbuwe hails from Auchi in Edo state and served in Abuja before his death.

    It was learnt that the recovered body has since been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.

    Edo Police spokesman, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, said it was a search party that discovered the body of the slain policeman at Emu-Oken bush.

  • Mobile policeman rapes ATM user at gun point

    A mobile policeman in Anambra State, has been detained for allegedly defiling a 35-year-old lady in the premises of one of the new generation banks.

    The victim (name withheld) was said to have gone to make some transactions at the bank’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in the night when the incident occurred.

    Confirming the report, Commissioner of police, Rabiu Ladodo, said the command was still investigating the matter.

    He said the command would make the report public after investigation being handled by the state Criminal investigation Department CID, Awka.

    The Nation gathered that the suspect, employed as a security guard to the bank, had approached the victim, demanding to have sexual intercourse with her.

    An employee of the bank, who pleaded anonymity, said the victim had initially refused the request until she was threatened with a gun by the suspect.

    According to the source: “With her life threatened, and nobody around to rescue her, she submitted and he had his way”

    The source further revealed that the victim stormed the bank the following day with some policemen who arrested the suspect.

    Ladodo said: “Soon after the police received complaint of the alleged rape from the victim, operatives were dispatched and the suspect was quickly arrested and placed under detention.”

    But he said that preliminary investigation was yet to establish whether the victim was raped during the incident.

    Ladodo however assured that the suspect would face necessary punishment if found guilty.

  • No bus driver killed by policeman in Lagos

    The Lagos State Police Command yesterday denied its operatives shot a commercial bus driver dead at Ayobo on Friday.

    It said the person reported dead in an online video only pretended to be dead when policemen on anti-crime patrol were attacked by a gang of suspected cultists led by one Lekan Isiaka. Social media reports with video, had later alleged policemen killed a driver at Mosan Okunola area of Ayobo, Ipaja, following the latter’s refusal to part with money they had demanded from him.

    According to the online report, the policemen also released sporadic gunshots to scare onlookers as they made to escape after allegedly killing the driver, but two members of the team were chased and caught by passers by. It was gathered that the crowd and the bus conductor disarmed the two policemen they caught who were later taken alongside the body by a reinforced team comprising officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and policemen, to Area P, Ayobo.

    The operatives, witnesses alleged, harassed those recording the incident, seized their phones, arrested the conductor and a few others. But in a statement signed by police spokesman, Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP), the command said: “The incident took place at Mosan Okunola Community in Ayobo area of the state where a team of anti crime policemen on routine patrol, led by Inspector Oloruntoba Gbenga, was attacked by a gang of youths suspected to be members of an unlawful society led by one Lekan Isiaka.

    “The said Lekan Isiaka while trying to snatch a rifle assigned to  Inspector Frank Ikpokpo,  stabbed him on the head. The rest of the team resisted the criminal gang and made a distress call to their Area Command Headquarters  in Ayobo following which a team of policemen were dispatched to the scene on rescue mission. The rescue team succeeded in arresting the notorious Lekan Isiaka who pretended to be dead in the video being circulated alongside his partners in crime, namely: Precious Bassey, Anayo Ugwu, Adewale Fatai, Samuel Akande, Matthew Ogbede, Adewunmi Idowu, Chukwuka Oshele and Kunle Adeola. Inspector Frank Ikpokpo is in the Intensive Care Unit of a private hospital.
