Police confirm killing of DPO in Rivers

Rivers Police command, has confirmed the killing of the DIvisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Ahoada East Local Government of the Bako Angbashim, a Superintendent of Police(SP).

Angbashim was killed by suspected members of Iceland Cult group in Odemude area of the council where he served.

The incident reportedly happened between 6pm and 7pm on Friday.

Confirming the gruesome murder in a statement on Saturday, Rivers police spokesman, Grace Eringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police(SP), said the DPO was ambushed by the criminal gangsters after dislodging a notorious criminal hideout in the area.

She said the galant officer was shot and killed after his team members exhausted their ammunition during gun battle with the cult group who took away his body to unknown destination.

The police blamed darkness for inability to go for the body of the Officer after military reinforcement.

They vowed to investigate and smoke out Angbashim’s killers to make them face the consequences of their actions.

In the statement titled, “Rivers killing: We will not rest until justice is served”, the Command said:
“In an unfortunate incident on 8th of September 8, 2023, the DPO of Ahoada Division, SP Bako Angbashim, displayed exemplary courage during a mission to combat criminal activities in the Odumude Area of Ahoada East Local Government Area in Rivers State.

“SP Bako Angbashim, alongside his dedicated team, embarked on a raid of known criminal blackspots in the region. The operation led to a pursuit of criminals from their concealed hideouts.

“Tragically, as they were returning from this operation, they were ambushed by a significant number of criminals who opened fire on the brave officers.

“In the face of this adversity, SP Bako Angbashim valiantly held his ground, while his men, depleted of ammunition, made a tactical retreat. Regrettably, during this engagement, SP Bako Angbashim sustained fatal injuries, and one of his informants was also injured, currently receiving medical care for a gunshot wound.

“The criminals seized the body of SP Bako Angbashim, forcing the remaining officers to return to their base for reinforcement. Efforts were made to rescue and recover the DPO’s body, with assistance sought from the Army teams stationed at FOB Base Etraco. However, the operation proved challenging due to the extremely dark conditions within the dense bush.

“The Rivers State Commissioner of Policel( CP) Nwonyi Polycarp, PhD, has expressed deep determination to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to justice.

“An extensive investigation is underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family of SP Bako Angbashim and all those affected by this distressing incident.” It said.

  • Eight-hour shift requires additional 300,000 policemen, says ex-IGP Arase

A former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Solomon Arase, has said the new eight-hour shift for the police may need 300,000 additional officers to succeed.

Speaking with The Nation at the weekend in Abuja, the nation’s capital, he said: “The figure is difficult to prescribe because if you have a strength of 300,000, you are looking at having additional 300,000 again. And that’s not feasible within the space of four years. This is because you have to start recruiting about 10,000 officers per recruitment exercise over a period of time. Even if you recruit 10,000 men each time, how long will that take you? And the (training) schools can’t accommodate the recruits.

“The main thing is thinking out of the box by having more of technical platform, using intelligence, using motorised patrols. All these are the issues they should be talking about.”

Arase suggested redeployment of redundant officers at the Force Headquarters, the zonal formations and other commands to fill the quota for the new shift work proposed by IGP Mohammed Adamu. He added: “They could push them into operations. He (Adamu) can take them to areas of need. That could be an interim arrangement.”

According to the ex-IGP and lawyer, the police have about 350,000 operational personnel, a percentage of which protects private individuals. Arase said modern policing is not about numerical strength but the deployment of technology.

He said: “If you look at most of the crises that have happened across the world, the detection of those crises was dependent on how robust the technical platform was.”

  • Policemen, others to die for kidnapping woman

Three policemen and four others are to die for kidnapping a woman, a court ruled yesterday.

The State High Court, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, presided over by Justice Joy Unwana, sentenced the convicts — three policemen, a woman and three others— to death by hanging.

The woman was hired by the gang of kidnappers for N50, 000, to cook for their victim, Deaconess Ime Anietie Ekanem, while they negotiated for ransom.

The state instituted the suit against eight members of the gang in 2012.

They are: Cpl Emmanuel Charlie, Ekaette Edet Moses, Fidelis Emmanson Jeremiah, Cpl Bassey Sunday (377812), PC Mfon Bassey (478463), Ndu Okon Johnny, Unyime Edem Etukakpan and Itohowo Godwin Akpakwa.

They were convicted on all three-count charges of conspiracy to commit felony, kidnapping, and concealing, aiding and sponsoring kidnapping.

Justice Unwana said: “The decision of the court to pass the death sentence is in tandem with the anti-kidnapping law of Akwa Ibom State. It is loud statement to the country that the crime of kidnapping is grievous offence in the state and punishable by death. I hope it will discourage those planning to engage in the crime to steer clear off Akwa Ibom.”

The eighth accused, Mrs. Akpakwa, in her statement which was admitted as exhibit, confessed to visiting her friend in a bar at Idakeyop Aka, where she gave the seventh accused, Etukakpan, money to buy medicine for his ill-health.

Though Mrs. Akpakwa denied knowledge of the plot to kidnap her friend and neighbour, no fewer than three other members of the gang told the court that they did not know her name when she attended the final meeting at Aka.

They insisted that she was the one who identified her friend and gave the direction to her house in Obio Etoi village, Uyo.

It was learnt that the victim was dragged out of the Toyota Sienna car driven by her husband, in front of the family house at about 6.30pm and whisked away in a Volvo Wagon car to Afaha Udoeyop in Ibesikpo Asutan council area, where she was kept, under armed guards, in an isolated building pending agreement and payment of ransom.

The anti-kidnapping unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) swung into action as telephone negotiations between the kidnappers and the victim’s husband brought down the initial demand from more than N20 million to about N1.8 million to be paid in two installments.

Security operatives of the SCID in mufti were shocked to discover that the first two persons who approached the Afaha Ibesikpo Market square venue for the ransom delivery were their colleagues.

Shortly after the encounter, the change in venue for delivery of the ransom was relayed to the husband of the victim by phone.

A police investigation report, it was gathered, indicated that after thrice changing the venue, the first installment of N800, 000 was delivered at Itam in another local government area.

From the totality of evidence before the court, it was observed that the gang might have got away with the crime had the proceeds been shared equitably.

It was also revealed that a disagreement in sharing the money led to friction.

A member of the gang, who at the time of sharing was in Uyo Prison on a different criminal matter, returned home to discover that he had been short-changed.

He then gave details of the plot and how it was carried out to the police, and later became the star witness for the state.

The eighth and the only accused who escaped the capital punishment, Mrs. Itohowo Akpakwa- a member of the staff of the University of Uyo, had earlier been granted bail.

  • Three feared killed, policemen injured in Lagos clash

Three persons were yesterday feared killed and many others, including policemen, injured after violence broke out at Alaba Rago in Lagos State.

It was gathered that violence erupted at Okokomaiko before noon when some youths celebrated the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in last Saturday’s election on the expressway.

Sources said the youths, armed with cutlasses and bottles, sang songs of victory from Alaba Rago and marched towards Okokomaiko, blocking the expressway and challenging other road users.

They were said to have resorted to violence at Okokomaiko, attacking traders and destroying their shops.

A woman, who identified herself as Blessing, said: “They came from Alaba Rago and were celebrating President Buhari’s victory. They shouted Sai Baba and marched towards Okokomaiko.

“When they got to Okokomaiko, they started destroying traders’ goods and this made them (traders) to run for fear.

“The hoodlums went to Okokomaiko Police Division and the officers tried to stop them, but they were violent. They attacked the officers and injured some of the policemen.

“We heard gunshots and later news started spreading that they killed one of the policemen. Parents ran to schools to take their children.

“Vehicles were not moving on this busy road because the youths also burnt tyres. It was terrible. Soldiers later came to restore peace.”

A meat seller, Sule, condemned the violence, saying it made it impossible for him to sell.

“I am from the North and those who caused this violence are also from the North. I have not sold anything since morning. What will I do with this meat now?” he said.

A motorcyclist said policemen arrested some people when they got to the scene. He, however, alleged that those arrested were innocent bystanders and not the perpetrators of the violence.

At the time of this report, policemen from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and soldiers were still on the scene. An RRS helicopter was hovering over the area.

The police yesterday morning averted a clash between hoodlums on Lagos Island after a faction attempted to prevent traders from opening their shops.

The Nation learnt that hoodlums stormed Oluwole, Nnamdi Azikwe, Tinubu, Bamgbose and Alli streets around 9am, accusing traders of not voting for their candidates during last Saturday’s elections.

They were, however, confronted by another faction, who found their actions to be provocative.

Policemen from Area ‘A’ Command intervened to stem a potential crisis.

Police spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP), said 37 suspects were arrested at Alaba Rago, adding that investigation had begun.

He confirmed that the hoodlums attacked police vehicles and injured personnel who attempted to take them off the highway.

Oti said: “Some youths blocked the highway and information was sent to the police. Policemen on traffic control duty were deployed and they tried to make them to leave the road, but they attacked the policemen. Some policemen sustained injuries. Reinforcement was dispatched to the scene and 37 persons were arrested. Investigation is on.

“There was no crisis on Lagos Island. What happened was that hoodlums were about to confront themselves and policemen were quickly deployed to avoid clash.”
