  • PDP alleges plot to rig Plateau council polls

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of planning to rig the February 17 local government elections.

The chairman, Damishi Sang, who addressed a news conference in his office at Yakubu Gowan Way, Jos, yesterday, said: “With two weeks to the council polls, the State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has not deemed it necessary to display the voters’ register.

“Under the PLASIEC law 2017, the voters’ register collected from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be on display at least one month to the date of election. But with just two weeks to go, PLASIEC is yet to display the list. Therefore, we are not sure of those qualified to cast their votes on February 17.

“Under normal circumstances, recruitment of ad hoc workers should be properly advertised, but we are witnessing a secret recruitment handled by the state APC Chairman.

“Worse of all, there is no existing law to govern the administration and functions of those to be elected. We are aware the House of Assembly passed the local government laws, which takes care of tenure and general administration five months ago. However, the governor is yet to assent to the law.

“It is evident from these observations that the absence of the local government law is a deliberate attempt on the part of the governor Simon Lalong-led administration to build a house without a foundation, thereby creating loopholes for the collapse of the local government system, thereby allowing the governor to continue to impose caretaker committees to run the councils.

“The non-display of voters’ register, as provided for by the law, is intended to disenfranchise our supporters, as we suspect the list is being doctored.

“We wish to state that while we have worked hard to contain our supporter’s apprehension, we urge the government and PLASIEC to come clear on the issues raised.

“However, despite the shortcomings mentioned above, PDP is fully ready for the February 17 elections.”

  • Delta: Violence, irregularities mar council polls

Delta: Violence, irregularities mar council polls

The 2018 Delta state local council elections, across the 25 council areas of the state, started out on Saturday on a violent note as unknown armed men set the State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) office in the Ughelli council Secretariat on fire.
The situation was not less volatile in other council areas, especially in the Delta Central District. There were reports of violent attacks, leaving more than two persons hospitalised in Ughelli.
There also reports of malpractices in the distribution of election materials, leading to mass resistance by voters in both Ughelli South and Udu council areas.
Although the take off of the exercise in Warri South and Uvwie council areas was relatively peaceful as DSIEC officials and party representatives were seen going about the distribution processes, the situation in many other parts of the state was opposite.
However, the chairmanship candidate of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) in Uvwie council area, Ufuoma Okenini, has raised the alarm over alleged intimidation and threat to the lives of members and supporters of his party by those he described as “thugs of the PDP”.
In Ughelli, as at about 8:30am, sources in Ughelli, the headquarters of Ughelli North council area of the state, said while the DSIEC, party representatives and security officers were distributing materials to various units, some armed men invaded the Secretariat, shooting sporadically and left the DSIEC office ablaze.
A source told the Nation that the atmosphere in the council Secretariat was tense as the attackers carried out their mission. Although there was no report of death, it was learned that many persons sustained various degrees of injuries.
“At about 8:30am this morning, while the security agencies were on ground waiting for election materials at the Ughelli secretariat, some armed men bust into the place , shooting very rapidly.
“As we speak, the secretariat has been set ablaze while all on ground are looking for where to hide. Some comrades monitoring the election have run into the bush for hiding,” the source said.
In Udu council area, the exercise did not go peacefully as voters and officials of opposition parties refused to allow distribution of election materials after finding out that the returning officer allegedly ran away with the original result sheets.
The rancorous situation persisted until well after 11:20am when some persons, said to be officials of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), under the cover of  local vigilante men and policemen, pushed their way through the angry crowd, loaded the remaining materials and sped away.
In the neighbouring Ughelli South council area, election materials were still holed up in the Divisional Police Station at the council headquarters in Otu-Jeremi as at noon. The Nation gathered that voters and members of opposition parties, including the APC, had kept vigil around the police station after realising that sensitive materials, including result sheets, were missing from the available materials.
Things, however turned bloody in the early hours of the day when some armed vigilante men, allegedly working with the ruling party, attacked some members of the APC, shooting two, in an attempt to scare people away and make way for easy get away with remaining materials.
A chieftain of the APC in Otu-Jeremi, Ifeanyi Adjekota, called for a rescheduling of the election in the council area, noting that there was no way election would hold and be seen as free and fair any longer. He said trouble started when voters sensed foul play in materials brought, adding that the returning officer allegedly ran away with some sensitive materials.
  • Delta Council polls: Voters comply with restriction order in Warri

There was almost full compliance in Warri and environs with the restriction of movement order by the Delta Government as the council polls began on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that only very few persons and vehicles on special duties were seen on the ever busy major roads in Warri and environs.

However, there were security operatives stationed at strategic locations like the Refinery junction in Ekpan and Airport road to enforce compliance.

Though shops were not opened for businesses, traders of food items in Okere market in Warri South were selling to customers.

However, election materials started leaving the Delta Independent Electoral Commission’s (DESIEC) office in Warri South Local Government Area to the various wards  and units as at 8:24 a.m.

The Electoral Officer in Warri South, Mr Tedeye Omagba, said the exercise had been very peaceful.

“You can see the presence of heavy security men around.

“The people have been very orderly and I assure you everything will end peacefully,” he said.

Also, Mr Kelly Otuedon, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman in Uvwie Local Government Area, said the party had done a lot of grassroots campaign to guarantee the party’s victory at the poll.

Otuedon, who is also the Senior Special Adviser to Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa on Security Matters, dismissed the claim that the party imposed candidates on the people in the council.

“We did not impose any candidate on the people, they chose their candidates and are ready to defend their choice today at the poll.

“So far the exercise has been so peaceful,” he said.

NAN reported that voting materials had not been evacuatef from the Uvwie Council as at 9:30 a.m.

The DESIEC office in Ughelli North has, however, been reportedly set ablaze by suspected hoodlums.(NAN)

  • 30,000 ad hoc workers for Kano council polls

30,000 ad hoc workers for Kano council polls

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State has removed Majority Leader of the House of Assembly, Ibrahim Dandodo.

Dandodo, who represents Rijau Constituency, will be replaced with Nura Garba (Kontagora I).

The sack was contained in a letter to the Assembly, where the party requested it to recognise Dandodo’s removal.

However, some lawmakers have resisted this move, saying only lawmakers have the powers to elect their leaders.

This development  has caused a cold war between the party leadership and lawmakers, as the party threatened to deny them tickets in 2019 if they refuse to act upon the letter.

The lawmakers are standing on the House of Assembly Standing Order, Page 6, which states that the election of the Speaker and his deputy is the responsibility of members, while the rules of the House gives power to lawmakers to select their leaders.

A lawmaker, who pleaded for anonymity, confirmed the receipt of the letter.

He said the APC lawmakers were neither consulted nor involved in the decision.

Efforts to get party’s secretary, Mohammed Liman, to comment were unsuccessful.

    •APC rejects results

The Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of last Saturday’s local government election.

PDP won the 31 chairmanship and 329 councillorship seats in the election.

  • ‘Obiano a beneficiary of Buhari’s commitment to free, fair polls’

‘Obiano a beneficiary of Buhari’s commitment to free, fair polls’

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr. Osita Okechukwu, has said the winner of Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State, Governor Willy Piano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), is a beneficiary of President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to free and fair elections.

Reacting to the outcome of the November 18 poll, Okechukwu, who was an observer during the election, said: “Governor Willie Obiano benefited handsomely from President Buhari’s commitment to free, fair and transparent elections. This is a case of democracy convert, someone who behaved better than old democrats. Otherwise, he couldn’t have allowed Obiano to manipulate the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies against his party’s candidate.”

He added: “Yes, free and fair, but one does not know how Obiano will cope with governance as per finance, when he overbids other candidates. In our local parlance, he used all the firewood. It was more or less a cash and carry election.

“Can you imagine that the chairman of our great party, Emeka Ibe, was arrested by the security agency on the eve of the election because of some flimsy allegations? In the days of yore, a federal ruling party chairman would be parading the town with soldiers and policemen. A lot of our canvassers and sundry officials were harassed and hounded. It was the theatre of the absurd.”

  • 2018 Polls: Ekiti elders back Ojudu

2018 Polls: Ekiti elders back Ojudu

A group, Ekiti Elders Forum (EEF), has passed a vote of confidence on gubernatorial hopeful and Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu. Receiving Ojudu at Igbara Odo, EEF pronounced its confidence in Ojudu’s ability to deliver the state from the present state of rot.

The elders, led by Chief George Akosile, lamented the sorry state Ekiti is currently enmeshed and said there is need for a vibrant leader who could brave the odds and rescue the sinking state while also pleading for cohesion among those competing for the Ekiti top job so as to be able to present a formidable front to take power from the current government.

Speaking at the occasion, Akosile, who presided over the meeting, received Ojudu into the fold, saying the elders need his closeness at this crucial stage to galvanise the state to optimum speed in development. According to him, the need for the progressive minded Ekiti indigenes to come together to form a common front to liberate the state from the grip of poverty, squalor and dwindling reputation has become a must.

“We have made a costly mistake by voting a wrong person to take over the driving seat in piloting the affairs of the state and we have all paid dearly for it. Today we are at a crossroad. All we need to do now is to find a way to correct the grievous errors of the past.
