    A renewed calmness and sense of  ‘renewed passion for polo’ now pervade  the Garden City of Port Harcourt as Henry Agbojan, Dolapo Attoni, Ikenna Nebolisa among others take over the leadership of the foremost polo heaven and the flagship of Niger Delta.

    The new management committee was put in place to pilot the affairs of the club after a peaceful and a successful election held at the Club House of the club on June 30, 2024 following the gentlemanly decision of the incumbent President, Ebi Diriyal to step down voluntarily.

    Former Vice President of Port Harcourt Polo Club, Henry Agbodjan, has been elected to lead the new management committee of the foremost club as the new President.

    Agbodjan was elected at the just concluded polls that picked a new management committee that would run the affairs of the polo club for the 2024/2025 season.

    Others who were elected into the new management committee  were Barrister Dolapo Attoni who emerged the Vice President, the former Deputy Tournament Manager, Dr. Ikenna Nebolisa who is the new Captain, Raphael Olowu as the Treasurer and Kester Buzugbe as secretary.

    Other elected officers of the12- member New Management Committee include Victor Ojum, Austin Onimisi, Alfred Okubo, Manasis Adams, Peter Batuba, Tito Ifejika and Madam Nnene Onouha who serves as Membership Secretary of the club.

    In his acceptance speech, Agbojan stated that as the new President , he will always have deep respect for the immediate past President, Ebi pledging that his passion for the noble game that has become the biggest and the most popular sporting activities in Port Harcourt would receive his utmost commitment.

    He further reached out to all the playing and non-playing members assuring them of that new management committee under his leadership upturn every stone to improve upon the legacies of Port Harcourt Polo Club, usher in a renewed passion for the noble game and continue to fly high the Niger Delta flag internationally and within the Nigerian polo fraternity.

    He also pleaded for the support of members to accord each other dignity and respect and invariably make the club a more hospitable and desirable club for its members and the polo family.

    Both the Vice President, Attoni and the Captain, Dr. Ikenna are optimistic that a new chapter has been ushered into the Port Harcourt polo and they would use the extensive networks to raise the standard of the club.

    They pledged in a chat that they would work hard to ensure that the reputed Niger Delta Polo Festival hosted annually by Port Harcourt Polo Club revered as the flagship of polo in the South South and the South East geo-political regions of the country reaches new heights.

    They both plead for the support of members to accord each other dignity and respect and invariably make the club a more hospitable and desirable club for members and the polo family.

    Before the latest election however, the Garden City polo family had  been celebrating one of their own as their former President and one of the biggest polo patrons, Captain Iynene , was elected as the President of the Nigeria Polo Association in Ibadan  few months ago.

    Others elected into the new national management committee include Abba Dantata as the Vice President, Yemi Alakija as Secretary, Edozie Onwuli as Treasurer and Nigeria’s top rated professional, Bello Buba who would take charge as the Pony Welfare Officer, among others.

    Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, Emirs of Katsina, Zauzza, members of the National Assembly and former governors have heaped praises on Access Bank Group and its two partners, Fifth Chukker Polo & Country Polo Club and UNICEF for their leading campaign alleviating the plights of vulnerable and orphaned children in Kaduna state and its environs.

    Governor Ododo who was the Special Guest of Honour at the finals of the just concluded 2024 edition of the international charity polo tournament in Kaduna, lauded Access Bank and its partners for using the fund-raising polo platform to enhance the educational and health wellbeing of underprivileged children.

    “There is an important need for both private and public sectors to do a lot more in support of the Nigerian child, particularly the orphans and vulnerable children to enable them to look forward to a better tomorrow,” the Kogi State governor who was a first-time visitor to the charity event, pointed out.

    Recall that the commissioning of the first 60 classrooms school complex unveiling and the ground-breaking of another complex by the Kaduna State Governor Senator Uba Sani and the inauguration of Herbert Wigwe Memorial Cup, were some of the major highlights of the prestigious polo extravaganza.

    Governor Sani who paid a glowing tribute to Herbert Wigwe for his love for children and education across the country, declared that the Charity Shield polo platform has over the past two decades been a pivotal project for Kaduna State Government’s drive to give the millions of out-of-school children life lines for the future.

    Both Emirs of Katsina, HRH Abdulmumuni Usman Kabir and his Zauza counterpart, HRH Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli who were the royal fathers of the day, admonished parents particularly mothers across the country , to stop their children from street trading, begging, and other exploitative tendencies.

    Meanwhile, two former Kaduna State Governors Ahmed Makarfi and Ramalan Yero as well as the immediate past Niger State Governor, Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, have all applauded the Charity Shield for giving the teeming orphans and vulnerable children roaming the urban and rural communities great hope for better lives.

    The international charity polo has witnessed by a high-profile crowd that included UNICEF Officials, diplomats, and thousands of polo buffs from within and outside the country, produced five deserving champions finals in the low, intermediate, medium, and high goals categories.

    This term, home favourite, the Fifth Chukker polo team, produced another spectacular double feat by defending the Charity Shield title and becoming the first team to win the inaugural Herbert Wigwe Memorial Cup, edging tough opposition from Malcomines polo team from Jos in the final game.

    Other proud winners of the ten days of the exciting charity polo campaigns include two debutants Crown Polo team from Jos and the Mangal Cement team from Katsina who displayed exceptional throughout the event, clinching the Access Bank Cup and the UNICEF Cup on the first attempt.

    The Jos-based side defeated title holders, the Access Bank team 10½ -10 to clinch the event’s second biggest prize, the Access Bank Cup, while Katsina Mangal Cement secured a narrow 6-5 win against Kano MSR Bua team to cart home the UNICEF Cup. Kaduna Barbedos completed the list of winners, edging Lagos MSD Baby Bear to claim the Usman Dantata Cup.

    The Nigerian edition of the tournament is the first phase of the series while the second phase comes up in the United Kingdom in a few months’ time before the final leg later v the year in South Africa with the Access Bank Polo Day fiesta.

    As the countdown to the much anticipated Access Bank UNICEF Charity Shield Polo Tournament  gets underway , the Children’s  Day Anniversary  on Monday, May 27, has been listed as the first major event that would kick-start the fiesta  in Kaduna.

    Expectedly, over 150 school pupils and their teachers are  to spend the whole day at the foremost Fifth Chukker Polo & Country Club in Kaduna   where  they will engage  in various sporting activities, drawing and paintings with inscriptions such as:  Stop Child Abuse; Childhood Isn’t Meant To Be A Nightmare; Let’s Start Fighting For The Kids and among others.      

    Presentations of songs, dance and drama would be made by the various school children from Adamu Atta Primary School, which remains the pilot school for the UNICEF programmes.

    In recent times other schools like Kaduna International Schools, Al-Amanah Academy, Rage Gem Academy French International School and others have had the opportunity of marking the Children Day at the resort.

    The Children’s Day that has grown to become a popular item on the annual calendar of the fundraising polo fiesta, recently received high profile commendation as an occasion that enables children to cherish their freedom and reawaken their potentialities.

    Emir of Bauchi, HRH Dr. Rilwanu Sulieman Adamu, who made this commendation in Kaduna, hailed the Access Bank, UNICEF and Fifth Chukker for providing the platform during the charity polo tournament for the Nigerian children to mark the Children Day in a most special way.

    The royal father who was the Special Guest of Honour at the last Children’s  Day Special encouraged Access Bank and their partners to further deepen their commitment to the welfare of the Nigerian child, while urging other corporate organizations to key into the initiative that protects the future of the country.

    “There is an important need for both private and public sectors to do a lot more in support of the Nigerian child, particularly the orphans and vulnerable children to enable them look forward to a better tomorrow,” the Emir added.

    The exciting children are expected to round up the day watching two polo teams displaying their skill in an exhibition match to end the day on high ahead of the tournament proper that gallops-off May 28.

    One of the major highlights of the opening stage of the annual charity event last year was the Children’s Day celebration with the former First Lady of Kaduna State, Hajia Aisha Ummi EL-Rufai as the Mother of the Day.

    The other was the commission of class work by the Deputy Governor of Kaduna State in the 60 classrooms block school complex built and furnished by Access Bank and the Charity Shield partners.

     According to the organisers, the opening week of the 2024 Access Bank UNICEF Charity polo extravaganza will feature over 14 teams vying for honours in the race for the event’s second most wanted prize, the Access Bank Cup and the UNICEF Cup respectively.

    The second and the grand finale stage  holding  between  June 4 and 9, promises to be one of the most exciting in years, pitching title holders,  Access Bank/Fifth Chukker, Jos Malcomines and six other determined regulars in a winner-takes-all chase for the Usman Dantata Cup and tournament top prize, the Charity Shield respectively.

    Regarded as biggest charity polo tournament  in Africa, its  seventh year of Access Bank exclusive sponsorship of the event with  more than N700 million for UNICEF in support  for the alleviation of the plights of the underprivileged children in Kaduna State and its environs.

    Defending champions, Access Bank polo team, former champions, Fifth Chukker and serial runners-up, Jos Malcomines, top the list of 25 teams to compete for top honours in the prestigious Charity Shield to be held between  May 28 and June 9 at the foremost Fifth Chukker Polo & Country Club in Kaduna.

    According to the tournament draw, the highly-fortified Access Bank polo kings are billed to defend their Charity Shield title against the ambitious Malcomines team from Jos, Plateau State, and former champions Fifth Chukker.

    Further  checks revealed that the other ambitious 22 teams  dominated by regulars and newcomers drawn from all the major polo centres  across the country would be seeking  charity polo fame in the event’s second most wanted prize, the Access Bank Cup, the UNICEF Cup and the Usman Dantata Cup respectively.

    Regarded  as one of the biggest charity polo platforms in the world, the Access Bank-UNICEF polo extravaganza will be decided in two stages, with teams battling for the UNICEF Cup and the events’ second most wanted prize, The Access Bank Cup in the first stage. .

     “This year’s tournament is more than an affirmation of that commitment to socio-economic wellbeing of mankind and acknowledgement of the impact the initiative has had on the lives of the orphaned and vulnerable children in northern Nigeria especially in Kaduna state,” the statement said.

    The event, which is in its over seventeen years  of Access Bank exclusive sponsorship, is a reaffirmation of the importance the financial power house attaches to the lives of the orphaned and vulnerable children in Nigeria.

    Meanwhile, UNICEF  has commended the platform partners for their commitment even as they expressed delight that the Access Bank UNICEF Charity Shield is archiving its main objective of reaching out to the less privileged children in the society.

    “We have been working in Kaduna, in collaboration with Access Bank and Fifth Chukker Polo & Country Resort to elevate quality of lives.”” We need to do a lot more in support of these orphans and vulnerable children to enable them to look forward to a better tomorrow,” UNICEF added.

    The Charity Shield began in 2003 as a platform to support local charity organizations in Kaduna. Since 2006 this humanitarian effort has been geared exclusively towards UNICEF intervention projects for orphans and vulnerable children in Kaduna State.

    In 2008, the UNICEF Charity Shield received a major boost when Access Bank agreed to a multi-year sponsorship deal, making the tournament one of the best-supported events in the history of Nigerian sport. The event is very well attended by high ranking government dignitaries such as diplomats, Senators, governors, corporate chieftains and traditional emirs.

    Income generated from gate takings and donations is channelled to UNICEF in support of meeting the needs of orphans and vulnerable children in their care, including providing healthcare and education supplies.

    It also provides additional training for children and caregivers and aims to increase knowledge and skills around nutrition, healthcare, hygiene and psycho-social support, with additional life skills and civic education for older children.

    Ahead of the  commencement of the second phase of the national polo tour, Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State, is warming up for its grandest moment of the year as the old  city prepare to host the 2024 Ibadan International Polo Tournament

     The prestigious annual polo festival that stands alone as the biggest sporting cum tourism attraction to the ancient Oyo Kingdom is billed to gallop off on May 20  through  May 26  at its traditional Eleyele Polo Ground in Ibadan.

    An official of thee Ibadan Polo Club  who disclosed this, stated that the club’s President, Koyin Owoeye has already ordered that all relevant committees of the tournament start early preparations ahead of what promises to be one of the most exciting Ibadan tournaments in years.

     “We tournament date has been confirmed by the Nigeria Polo Association (NPA) and we are indeed working full blast toward hosting a very special Ibadan tournament this year that would match and surpass all records in all fronts,” he declared.

    “Work is already ongoing to put the ground in perfect order and as we are discussing, our marketing and fund raising and other committees are exploring new avenues to add real values to our partners and sponsors both traditional and prospective ones,” he added.

    Further checks reveal that the Tournament Committee has started reaching out stakeholders to intimate them with plans to host the 2024 edition of the Ibadan international polo fiesta, just as letters of invitation to participating clubs and teams would be dispatched by the end of April.

    The Ibadan polo tournament has over the years set a unique example as one of the most exciting polo events in the country and we are putting together a package that would make the tournament the most exciting in years.

    The highly revered international polo festival has over the decades, offers the glittering Ibadan Cup as its biggest prize. The Ibadan top was presented in the early 1930s by Colonel R. Petit of the 9th Lancer of the then British colonial masters.

    Other major prizes to be won during the fiesta include the Rotimi Cup, Ade Alakija Cup played in memory of the former Ibadan Polo Captain, and The GOC Cup as well as a handful selected prizes and awards.

    Last year, the prestigious 2023 Ibadan International Polo Tournament ended on high for Lagos, Kano and Jos contingents as visiting Lagos GDF, Kano Golden Alchemy and the long travelling Red Crown from Jos, Plateau State sweeping top laurels on offer.

    After seven days of bumper polo actions pitting top teams with all the big names in the noble game of kings and professionals from Argentina, Lagos GDF Global team and its arch rivals, Lagos MSD Bear  team emerged winners and runners-up champions respectively in their quest for the Ibadan Cup.

    Kano Golden Alchemy defeated all comers to clinch the Gen. Rotimi Cup, while Lagos Workstation finished runners-up in the medium-goal competition that attracted six equally matched teams.

    The Sammy Nasredeen powered Red Crown team from Jos won the Governor’s Cup  (popularly called (Omi Tun-Tun Cup) on first attempt and  earned their third successive Ade Alakija Cup runners-up crown , after narrowly losing to their Lagos Tharwa opponents 4-5 in the final.

    It was equally confirmed that the Ibadan event that would conclude the southern tour of the glamorous road tour of the noble game of kings would signal the beginning of the northern leg of the tour with Kaduna and Keffi queuing to take the first and second slots.

    The exciting national polo tour that went on  break due to the  Easter and Ramadan fasting period  would expectedly  resume its road tour next month with Ibadan and Kaduna being  the first two port of calls as  queuing the second half of the 2024 polo season begin in earnest.

    The second leg of the tour that spans over eight months on the road, will take the train through the North Central, North West, North East and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) before climaxing with fanfare in Jos in December.

    The season is  expected to resume in the South West with the 2024 Ibadan international polo tournament  after it has  anchored  since  the month -long 2024 Lagos international polo tournament.

    It was  gathered from the polo ruling authority that the first part of the tour that started with the Niger Delta Polo Festival in Port Harcourt last January, will have to round up its southern leg before moving up north, and the Ibadan tournament  is the next  online.

    Reputed for its cutting edge competition, the national tour  on resumption would take  the cream of Nigerian polo stars through  Argungu,  Minna, Kano, Bauchi,  Yola, Kaduna,  Abuja, Jos and Port Harcourt, before making a splashing landfall in Lagos where the king of sports was first played way back in 1904.

    The first phase of the tour  which took off on a blistering pace last August in the ancient kingdom of Katsina, was rounded off with fanfare last February during the Lagos International Polo fiesta that saw Leighton Kings out pacing a robust field to retain the event’s biggest crown, The Majekodunmi Cup for another year.

    The break that traditionally allows the battle weary players and the ponies time to rest, is usually a shopping period opportunity  for the patrons to  rejuvenate their various stables and double their horse powers ahead of the next leg of the tour.

    If the standing at the end of the first leg of the tour is anything to go by, then the teams to watch out for as the May resumption date beckons are Jos Malcomines, Kaduna EL-Amin  and Abuja Rubicon that made a splashing return to Lagos this year.

    While the tour lasted, the game of royalties and societal affluence did make some startling in-roads as one of the biggest corporate sports in the country, drawing new followers in their droves and adding a few new tournaments along the road.

    One such significant addition during the period was the ground-breaking  inauguration of the Crown Club Polo Resort in Jos, Plateau State. The other being the inaugural edition of the Renewed Hope Cup contested for in Kaduna and in Yola last year.

    With the Easter and Ramadan festivities out of the way, the Nigerian polo buffs are upbeat for another exciting moment in the nation’s capital city as the preparations are on by the Rubicon Polo & Turf Club to host an international tournament for the year 2024.

    Proprietor of the Rubicon Turf Club, Senator Hadi Sirika hinted that the polo farm would host a major tournament this year in Abuja, explaining  that  the competition would basically be a medium and low-goal event that seeks to give Nigerian upcoming polo players  opportunity to develop and hone their skills.

    Senator Sirika said as much while speaking at the Guards Polo Resort in Abuja shortly after leading his Rubicon team to clinch the Presidential Cup during the finals of the 2023 Abuja Carnival Polo Tournament that featured over twenty teams from across the country.

    The nail-biting  final match  which pitted defending champions Jos Malcomines against multi- winners Rubicon was witnessed by a capacity crowd that included the special guest of honour, The Sultan of Sokoto, ended 7-7 after extra chukka.

    To separate the winner, Minister of Youths, Jamila Ibrahim stepped  in with a toss that fell in favour of Rubicon to the admiration of their patron who described the final game as equally contested. 

    Senator Sirika lauded his players for their commitment and concentration throughout the week-long tournament that also fetched them the Argentine Ambassador’s Cup.

    Meanwhile, the 2024 Rubicon polo tournament which would be the second since the expansive resort was opened to equestrian activities, may be expanded to include high-goal teams  that would be another  open ended polo event with professionals from Europe, Argentina and South Africa participating.

    “Yes we are looking to host a major tournament this year  and we have started meeting to see the scope of the event  that may last over a week at the Resort  where facilities are being updated ahead of the event,”   one of the organizing committee officials hinted. “The committee is working steadily and surely we would meet with the management of the resort and other stakeholders to fix the dates and the duration of the tournament.”

    Three years ago, the Rubicon Polo & Turf Resort hosted its inaugural 20-goal tourney that featured all the biggest Nigerian polo patrons, top Nigerian players and their foreign counterparts in a five days show-stopper polo rumble in Abuja.

    The participating teams at the historic fiesta held between  September 26 and October 2, 2021 were Kaduna Profile Group team, Kaduna Barbados, Abuja Lintex, Jos Malcomines and Rubicon at Turf nestling off Airport Road, Jabi.

    The week-long event that featured as one of major events  to mark Nigeria’s Independence anniversary,  saw the Kaduna Profile Polo team confirmed their place at the summit of Nigerian polo scene, becoming the first team ever to win the inaugural Rubicon Polo Resort tournament in Abuja.

    Profile defeated city rivals Kaduna Barbedos for the crown in a tense final decided before a full house in the capital city. Lintex, Malcomines and Barbedos, the eventual Runners-up, all ended the round-robin stage with a win and a draw each and had to go into a toss that threw up Barbedos to face Profile in the ultimate final.

    The Mohammad Babangida’s  Profile Big Boys went into the inaugural tournament as outsiders, but made their mark with a breath-taking exhibition of skills, horsemanship and broken-field running, showing off everything that was good about not only their own play but Nigerian polo as a whole.

    As the Nigerian polo fraternity warms up for the resumption of the national polo tour, Fifth Chukker Polo & Country Club has announced its tournament calendar for the 2024 playing season.

    The schedule which spans three continents will see the Nigerian polo club organizing and hosting tournaments in Nigeria, United Kingdoms, South Africa and Argentina in Southern America.

    According to the  release, the 2024 polo season will gallop off next month with the Easter/ Eid polo tournament billed for the lawns of the Kangimi Resort in Kaduna between  April 11 and 14 celebrate the end of the Islam and Christian religious festivities.

    Following on the heels of the religious holiday events, the prestigious polo resort will fling its door open for the Children Day celebration on May 27, before hosting its flagship annual tournament, the Access Bank UNICEF Charity Shield tournament  between  May 28 and  June2.

    The prestigious charity event revered as the biggest and the richest in the continent that has been solely sponsored by Access Bank since 2009 will expertly move to high gears as the charity polo extravaganza hit the United Kingdom with the Access Bank UK Polo Day in London.

     The Charity Shield Polo Tournament that raise fund from sponsors, partners and well spirited members of the public in support of UNICEF campaigns in aid of the less privilege and vulnerable children in Kaduna State and its environs, will climax in South Africa with the Access Bank South Africa Polo Day in December14, 2024.

    It was also  gathered that before the trip to South Africa, Fifth Chucker will host a special tournament on October 1, to mark the 2024 Independence Day Anniversary in a series of activities with the noble game of king at the center stage.

    Between  October 21 and 27, the Kangimi Resort will play host to the best of Nigerian polo patrons and professional players around the world for this year’s Emir of Zazzau African Patrons Cup polo tournament.

    The tournament also supports an awareness campaign against the dreaded Breast Cancer pandemic among women through its Pink Polo component that runs side by side with the Patrons Cup showdown.

    One other foreign tournament will see Fifth Chukker travel to Southern America between  November12 and 24, for the Argentina Polo Experience at Pillar, Argentina, before returning home for the five days back-to-back Christmas Holiday polo tournament  between December 25 and 29 in Kaduna.

    The last tournament in the 2024 polo calendar year to be hosted by the Resort is the New Year Mini Polo Tournament scheduled between December31 and  January 1, 2025 at the expansive club that boasts lush playing turfs, sporting facilities and lots of offerings for a perfect holiday experience.

    With three polo fields, 400 stables, an exercise track, an arena and school, tack & storage rooms and various hiking and horse trekking trails across the Kangimi, Fifth Chukker Polo Club has become quite the hub for equestrian pursuits and leisure activities in Nigeria and Africa.

    Last year, the prestigious 2023 Access Bank UNICEF Charity Shield polo tournament that came to a fitting climax at the Fifth Chukker & Country Polo resort in Kaduna witnessed remarkable performances from Access Bank (1&2) teams; Abuja YBL and Kano Rumbu polo teams all carting home all the four titles on offer.

    The growing popularity of Nigerian polo got  another boost  as the President of Nigeria Polo Federation (NPF), Nura Kangiwa, has been appointed to head African Regional Group  of  the governing board of the International Chovken Federation (ICF).

    This significant milestone was announced recently during General Assembly of the ICF in the capital city of Azerbaijan, where pivotal decisions were made to shape the future of this emerging sport with the endorsement of ICF Chatter of the popular sport that is steeped in tradition.

    The  election of Kangiwa it was gathered,  signifies a concerted effort to ensure equitable representation across continents, thereby fostering inclusivity and global collaboration within the Chovken community.

    The trio of Anna Hall of Great Britain, Zubeyir Bekiroglu of Turkiye, and Moubdi Mohamed of Morocco were elected as vice-presidents, reflecting the federation’s commitment to fostering a diverse leadership cadre and  ensure equitable representation across continents, fostering inclusivity and global collaboration within the Chovken community.

    According to the Nigerian polo governing authority, Chovken is a discipline with roots tracing back centuries that combines elements of martial arts and strategic combat, offering participants a dynamic platform to showcase their skills and athleticism.

    NPF noted that In assuming leadership of the African regional group, Kangiwa will brings to bear his wealth of experience and unwavering commitment to advancing sports development on the continent.

    The Nigerian polo family that celebrated the election of a Nigerian to the council of the global sport expressed confidence that Kangiwa’s presidency signifies not only a personal triumph but also a testament to the strides made by the Nigeria Polo Federation under his stewardship.

    NPF also declared that Kangiwa’s election aligns seamlessly with the overarching goals of the Nigeria Polo Federation, which has long championed initiatives aimed at nurturing emerging talent and enhancing Nigeria’s standing within the global sports community.

     “By leveraging his newfound position within the ICF, Kangiwa is poised to spearhead collaborative efforts to elevate chovken to unprecedented heights, drawing upon the rich tapestry of cultures and traditions that define the African continent,” NPF statement added.

    The Federation congratulated  the  Nura Sani Kangiva on his historic election and pledges its unwavering support as he embarks on this transformative journey.

    “Together, we look forward to championing the cause of chovken, celebrating its rich heritage, and inspiring generations of athletes to reach for new heights on the global stage,” the statement declared.

    It was equally  gathered that Kangiwa’s commitment and vision for chovken extends beyond mere competition; it encompasses a broader mandate of promoting inclusivity, fostering talent, and fostering cultural exchange, thereby enriching the sporting landscape of Africa and beyond.

    Meanwhile, preparations are ongoing by the Nigeria Polo Federation to host the first ever African Nations Polo Championship. The continental polo extravaganza was inaugurated last year in Morocco during the King Mohammed V international polo tournament.

    Secretary of the Nigeria Polo Federation (NPF), Murtala Ahmadu Laushi, who confirmed this in Jos recently, stated that the event that has already been subscribed by many polo playing countries is slated to hold in Abuja later this year.

     “As a major polo playing nation at the global stage, we (Nigeria) has accepted to host the first edition of the African polo event that would showcase polo talents across the continent, harness them and expose them to the international stage,” the  President of Jos Polo Club and Patron of the Jos Malcomines polo team, disclosed.

    Upon further inquiry, it was revealed that Rita Alakija is further propelled in her passion for the sport by her brother, Carl Alakija, who also revels in her passion for the sport.

    Recently, Rita and Carl were all smiles when their team, Ibadan Durante, emerged as champion at Coronation Silver Cup and Sani Dangote Memorial Cup at the Lagos Polo Tournament.
