    Poly Ibadan renaming: Oyo deputy governor, officials meet student leaders behind closed doors

    Oyo State Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal is currently meeting behind closed doors with the leadership of the student union of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, following a protest over the recent renaming of the institution by Governor Seyi Makinde.

    The meeting, taking place at the Conference Room of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), was convened by the state government in response to Monday’s protest, which disrupted academic and administrative activities on campus.

    Also in attendance are key government officials, including the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security, CP Sunday Odukoya (rtd); Commissioner for Education, Prof. Soliu Abdulwaheed Adelabu; Chairman of the Oyo State Youth Development Agency, Prince Falana Adebowale; and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Victor Olojede.

    The protest saw students locking the institution’s main gates and demanding a reversal of the name change, describing it as insensitive and poorly communicated.

    As the dialogue continues, it remains uncertain whether a resolution will be reached immediately, especially as Governor Makinde is currently out of the state on official duties.

    UPDATED: Activities paralysed as students protest renaming Poly Ibadan after late Olunloyo

    Academic and other activities were on Tuesday morning put on hold at the main campus of The Polytechnic Ibadan as the students took to the streets to protest the renaming of The institution to Victor Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic Ibadan by Governor Seyi Makinde.

    The Nation reports the Governor, while speaking at the interdenominational service in honour of Late Ex-Governor Omololu Olunloyo, announced the renaming of the institution after the former Governor for his contribution to the growth of the education sector in the state and the country as a whole 

    Olunloyo was the first Rector of the Institution as well as the Commissioner in the old Western region.

    However, the decision of the Governor to name the institution after him has been trail with controversies.

    While some sections of the public applauded the Governor for his decision others vehemently opposed it.

    Aside the students, the Alumni are also divided over the action of the government.

    This development has reliably gathered led to the decision of the enraged students to paralyze the academic and other related activities on the campus.

    It was gathered that, the South and North campus gates of the Institution were put under lock and key as at the time of this report.

    The development has deprived the people access to the institution.

    Commuters and motorists were subjected to untold hardship as they were forced to trek a long distance.

    The enraged students have insisted that the situation would remain the same until the governor reverse his decision.

    Also, the students staged a roadblock at Sango Junction, thereby obstructing vehicular movement

    As at the time of this report, the students have stormed the Oyo State Government Secretariat with placards and singing solidarity songs to expressed their displeasure.

    The students also forced security operatives to shut the entrance gates of the state Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

    As at the time of this report, the protesting students stil lay siege at the Secretariat.

    Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan have trooped out en mass to protest the decision of Governor Seyi Makinde to rename the institution after one of his predecessors, late Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo.

    Hundreds of commuters plying the ever-busy Sango-Eleyele Road in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, were stranded as a result of the protest.

    Makinde has few days ago renamed The Polytechnic Ibadan Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan.

    Olunloyo was the first Ibadan person to serve as the Governor of old Oyo State.

    He served between October and December 1983.

    The students in the early hours of Tuesday blocked the entrance gates of the institution.

    They also blocked the ever busy Sango -Eleyele Road.

    This made many commuters, residents and travellers plying the road to be stranded.

    Some staff are also stranded as the majority of them were unable to gain access to the institution.

    The Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency (OYTMA) in a statement by the Executive Chairman, Maj. Adekoya Rtd. enjoined commuters to use alternative routes for their movements pending temporary blockage of the roads.

    He wrote: “The general public are hereby informed of an ongoing student protest at The Polytechnic Ibadan, main Gate, the road in front of the school gate has been temporarily blocked.

    “Motorists heading towards Eleyele, Apete, Ijokodo, and nearby areas axis  from Sango and vice visa are advised to take alternative routes through Dugbe, Mokola or Ajibode to avoid delays and unnecessary confrontation.

    “We appeal to all road users to remain calm, cooperate with traffic officers, and follow all traffic  diversion signs.

    “Thank you for your understanding.“

    Poly Ibadan SUG president begs Makinde to intervene in ongoing strike

    The Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Comrade Oladipupo Olamide Daniel, has made an urgent appeal to Governor Seyi Makinde, expressing deep concern over the indefinite strike declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Oyo State-Owned Tertiary Institutions.

    In a letter written on behalf of the student body, the SUG President lamented the disruption of the academic calendar, the suspension of examinations, and the growing uncertainty faced by thousands of students.

    “Your Excellency, we are frustrated and deeply worried about the situation. We acknowledge the right of our lecturers and school workers to demand for their requests to be attained, but we, the students, are the ones suffering the most from this impasse,” the letter read.

    The letter further emphasized the repeated disruptions in the institution’s academic activities, which have prolonged students’ time in school far beyond the expected duration.

    At the time the strike was declared, The Polytechnic, Ibadan, was in the middle of conducting examinations, making the situation even more devastating for students.

    “There is no joy in spending all of our youthful years being just students; situations like these prevent us from growing in other areas of our lives. Education is the foundation of progress, and a disruption like this only sets us back,” the letter continued.

    The students urged Governor Makinde to urgently intervene and engage with the staff unions to find a lasting resolution to the crisis, ensuring that students can return to their classrooms and continue their examinations without further delay.

    “Our education, our dreams, and our future must not be sacrificed in this dispute. Please let us return to our classrooms to continue our exams,” the letter pleaded.

    The Polytechnic Ibadan is among the institutions affected by the strike action, which was called due to unresolved demands by the JAC.

    As students await the government’s response, many hope that Governor Makinde will take swift action to restore academic activities and ensure that their educational journey continues without further setbacks.

    Poly Ibadan Mass Comm alumni body unveils 20th-anniversary activities

    The old students of the Mass Communication department of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, have unveiled plans to mark their 20th anniversary union.

    The group, known as the Ascom Class of Presidents (Ascom CoP) 1998/2004 set, will inaugurate a solar-powered system for their department as part of activities marking the reunion.

    A statement by Yekeen Akinwale, head of the anniversary media committee, quoted Tunde Muraina, chairman of the central working committee (CWC), as saying that the group will also extend a similar gesture to the Mass Communication department at The Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa, which used to be the satellite campus of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, where they completed their National Diploma (ND) programme.

    The chairman said the committee has organised a series of activities to celebrate their years of camaraderie and learning legacy, saying that different sub-committees have been inaugurated to drive these activities.

    The CWC chairman disclosed that the reunion would include activities such as health clinics and talks, capacity-building sessions, business promotions, and a thanksgiving event.

    He added that there would also be awards and recognitions for deserving members who have excelled in their careers, former lecturers, and deceased colleagues.

    Muraina said the theme of the reunion is: “Ascom Class of Presidents 20th Anniversary Reunion: Today, Tomorrow, Together.”

    He noted that the association would also use the reunion to implement various welfare programmes to support its members.

    The timeline for the events began in March 2024 and is expected to conclude in August 2024 with a grand finale and the inauguration of a new executive team to steer the association forward.

    Poly Ibadan gets Acting Registrar, Bursar

    The Oyo State Government has appointed Mr Adewunmi Ogunjimi as Acting Registrar and Mr David Taiwo as Acting Bursar of The Polytechnic, Ibadan. 

    The appointment letters of the duo conveying the approval of the Oyo Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology on behalf of the State Government, dated 8th April was signed by the Acting Rector of the Institution, Dr Taiwo Lasisi.

    Ogunjimi, a seasoned Administrator, until his acting appointment was the Deputy Registrar, Directorate of Academic Affairs of The Polytechnic.

    He is a 1986 graduate of the University of Ife now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife where he bagged a B.Sc degree in Psychology and capped it in 2005 with a MSc in Industrial Psychology at the Premier University, University of Ibadan. For his secondary school education, he attended Prospect High School, Aba Nla between 1973 and 1978.

    An administrative Wizard, Ogunjimi who joined the services of The Polytechnic, Ibadan as Administrative Officer II rose through the ranks and along the line occupied several positions of responsibility ranging from Asst. Registrar; Senior Staff Establishment (1996-1997), Senior Asst. Registrar; Admissions Unit (1997-1999), Faculty Officer, Business and Communication Studies (2000-3003), Faculty Officer; Financial Management Studies (2003-2006), Principal Asst. Registrar; Students’ Affairs (2007-2008), Deputy Registrar; Students’ Affairs (2008-2010), Head of Registry Department, Adeseun Ogundoyin Campus now Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa (2010-2014).

    A doyen of Staff and Students, Ogunjimi is a member of many professional bodies and has several honorary awards to his credit. The Acting Registrar is happily married and blessed with children.

    The Acting Bursar, Mr David Taiwo was until his appointment a Chief Accountant with The Polytechnic, Ibadan. 

    He joined the services of The Polytechnic, Ibadan from the Nigerian Brewery PLC in March 1994 as an Accountant II. He rose through the ranks to the position of Chief Accountant in 2015. Mr David Taiwo holds HND, B.Sc and MSc in Accounting. He is a Fellow Chattered Accountant (FCE).

    He had held several positions of responsibility within the Bursary Department such as Head of Treasury Unit and until his appointment, Head of Final Accounts Unit. He is happily married and blessed with responsible children.

  • Poly Ibadan suspends student union, shuts institution

    The management of The Polytechnic Ibadan yesterday suspend activities of institution’s Student Union Government.

    The institution’s management also directed all students to proceed on mid-semester break with immediate effect.

    Announcing the management’s decision, the institution’s spokesperson, Mr. Adewole Soladoye, said the suspension became necessary as the student union body had failed to obey and follow the rules guiding its activities on campus.

    According to him, the management directed the immediate suspension because of the ongoing football competition, which had been disturbing the peace of the institution ahead of next week’s examination.

    He urged the students to stay committed to their examination, which begins shortly.

    He added that the management would not hesitate to punish anyone, who flouts the rules guiding the institution.

    In a statement yesterday and signed by the institution’s Registrar, Mrs. Modupe Fawale, the management said the police have been invited to ensure smooth vacation of the students from the campus to prevent breach of peace.

    The statement directed the students to report back for studies on April 10, 2019, urging parents and guardians to requests their children to return home.

    The marketing students of the Polytechnic of Ibadan 1987—1992 set would reunite on Saturday at the Pentorise event centre, Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo state capital.

    The administrator, Dele Oyadotun, in a statement said important issues regarding members and the institution will be discussed.

    The reunion, he said, is organised by Nigeria-based and marketers’ mates in the diaspora. He said it would bring about unity and progress in social, politics and economic life of the members and the school in general.

    Group empowers UI, Poly Ibadan students

    Inspired by the need to equip youths to be self-employed and innovative, The Better Nigeria Initiative (BNI), a youth-focused organisation at the University of Ibadan, organised a five-day Youth Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Livelihood Project (YES-LIP).

    The graduation of 40 students of the UI and The Polytechnic, Ibadan, who participated in the training, held  at the Kunle Adepeju Student Union Building of UI.

    Aside skills acquisition in areas, such as baking, bag and shoe making, photography, graphics design and sewing, participants learnt about entrepreneurship from seasoned professionals from the Bank of Industry (BoI) and the Ibadan Business School.

    Addressing the participants, the BNI Executive Coordinator, Mr John Oluwadero, advised the participants to further improve on the skills they acquired and charged them be solutions to the needs of their immediate society.

    “The YES-LIP Project is specially designed to empower young people with entrepreneurial skills and competence that will enhance their sustainable livelihood”, he said.

    Mr Pacqueen Irabor, the Manager, BoI, Ibadan, who spoke on funding start ups, challenged the beneficiaries to pursue their passion relentlessly till they add value to themselves and the nation.

    The event also featured the induction of new members and the investiture of Miss. Gbemi Adebowale as the President of the UI Chapter of BNI.

    Mr. Tomiwa Adeyemo, BNI outgoing president, advised the new members and executive to be committed to the objectives of the organisation as service to humanity is the best work of life.

    Other guests at the event included the former President, UI Students’ Union, Tokunbo Salako, Femi Babatunde, and Mr Yemi Adekunle, a pharmacist.
