TUC urges Wike to recall sacked poly workers

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) yesterday urged Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike to recall the 344 lecturers and other employees of the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori.

In a statement by its President, Bobboi Bala Kaigama, and Secretary General Musa Lawal, TUC said: “If the reported cases of mass sack of 344 lecturers and others employed at the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori, since September 2014 by the past administration, led by Chibuike Amaechi, and the disbandment of the Rivers State Road Traffic Management Authority (TIMA-RIV) are anything to go by, then the union might be tempted to believe that Wike is out to play politics of vendetta.”

The TUC noted that such action would not be in tandem with the nation’s wish and Rivers interest.

It decried the sack, especially with the grave consequences it portends to the affected workers, their dependants and the society.

The union  said the governor’s actions were most likely the fallout of the political acrimony that characterised the period before and during the general elections in the state.

It said such considerations ought to have gone with that period.

The statement said: “Right now, good governance should be the governor’s priority.”

“They should always keep watch over their children, call them regularly and where they don’t see them, they should quickly report to the police.

“If we had received this report on time, we would have been able to trace this lady. By the time we got the report, we now started scouting for information, only to arrest the okada man (motorcyclist) that brought her to the Shrine.

“It was from that okada man that we were able to know that she was taken to this area and by discreet investigation, we were able to discover this shrine.

Though established in November 2002, it was the first convocation to be organised by the institution.

The graduates, he said, stand a chance to become instruments of sustainable growth for the nation.

“You are now fully empowered to become instruments of sustainable development and to impact on a larger canvas. Remember that only those, who dare to dream and care to achieve have seen their destiny fulfilled,” he said.

Uduaghan said the polytechnics was set up by the state to capture youths early and provide them with quality education.

He said the targets were being achieved and the polytechnics have become a success story and a model to reckon with nationally.

“This Polytechnic is a success story among higher education institutions of the country with a social objective to bring home quality engineering and management education for the benefit of our youths, thereby addressing equity and digital divide,” he said.

Dr Uduaghan urged institutions of higher learning to organise annual convocation for their graduating students because it encourages students to strive towards competitiveness and completing the academic works with their mates.

“I urge management of higher institutions, especially management of this institution, to make the convocation ceremony an annual event so that graduating students can look forward to it,” he said.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Mr Charles Emetulu, said by organising the convocation, the institution had restored the ego of its graduates.

  • Scrap poly now, says don

Polytechnic education should be expunged from the  educational system to boost technical education in Nigeria and breaking into the world’s economy, a Chief Lecturer in the Department of Office Technology Management, Auchi Polytechnic, Dr Peter Iredia, has said.

Iredia delivered the fourth inaugural lecture at the institution’s new auditorium.

He spoke on the topic: The tripod of liberal, vocational and technical education: Politics of dichotomy in Nigeria.

He said: “The only sure way to do this is the development of technology via qualitative and functional education. It is on this basis that this lecture is strongly recommending that polytechnic education should be expunged from the Nigerian education system.

“All the premier polytechnics in Nigeria, i.e Yaba College of Technology, Lagos; The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Auchi, Polytechnic Auchi; Kaduna Polytechnic Kaduna; Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu; and few others that meet the required standards should be converted to universities of technology immediately to award Bachelors of Technology (B.Tech), Masters of Technology (M.Tech) and Doctors of Technology (D.Tech) degrees, with the rest polytechnics affiliated to the nearest Universities of Technology,” Iredia added.

If done, Iredia believes the development will give a boost to technology education and place qualifications obtained from them on the same pedestal as other university qualifications so much that recipients will not only be psychologically satisfies but would also be recognised in the public service and labour market.

He said to further plug the dichotomy between polytechnic and university education, some advanced countries are converting some polytechnics into universities.

He bemoaned government’s apathy towards the secretarial profession, noting that modifications in its name and curriculum to correct poor perception of the profession have gone unnoticed by the appropriate authorities.

He denounced some perceptions that inaugural lectures are meant for only universities, citing some polytechnics in Nigeria and overseas that also hold inaugural lectures.

The Rector, Dr Philipa Idogho, said  the lecture challenges Iredia’s contemporaries to prepare for their inaugural lectures because Auchi Polytechnic would be a model in that regard.

She said hard work, creativity and innovation has placed the institution high above its peers.

Congratulating Iredia, she urged all to be focused on the objective of academic excellence.
