  • GEMS3 Partners Ojodu LCDA to Launch PoP collection system

The Ojodu Local Council Development Area has taken a bold step in going digital by launching the Point of Payment (PoP) machine which will facilitate the payment of levies and rates within the local council area.

The event which took place at the council’s secretariat had in attendance various stakeholders who all expressed their delight at the initiative and urge the people to embrace the use of the machine as it will aid rapid development of the area.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the council, Mallam Jaji, said that the introduction of the PoP will tackle rouge revenue collectors and ensure that all revenues are paid directly to the purse of the council.

He said, “The main reason why we are here is to make our business transactions very easy for those who are paying into the coffers of the council and the council itself. On this seat, we usually have different experiences when it comes to the issue of revenue collection. Some people have the council rubber stamp; they have the council receipt and documents which they use to defraud unsuspecting members of the public. This is one of the leakages that is affecting the effective generation and accumulation of revenue by the local government.”

“So, if we have this Point of Payment collection, it is to our advantage and it is also to your advantage. We are going to seize this opportunity and make maximum use of it because at the end of the day, we are going to plough back whatever we must have made by extending various amenities to different areas under our local government. So, to that extent, I want to implore you some more to be cooperative with our revenue officers when you see them.

Jaji went further by thanking the brains behind the initiative, Growth and Employment in States (GEMS3), for coming up with such a creative idea that is meant to make things easy for everybody.

He said, “When I first heard about this initiative, I was very sceptical thinking they are one of those contractors that want to make their money but I can tell you categorically that up till now, GEMS3 is yet to demand anything from the council. This is a very unique development in Nigeria. To that extent, we say thank you for this initiative while also asking for more of such from you that can be of benefit to us and the people at large.”

Also speaking at the launch, one of the representatives of Eco Bank which is also a partner of the council on the PoP, Margaret Fawibe, congratulated the people of the council as the introduction of the PoP will finally make life easier for them in terms of payment of levies and rates.

She said, “I have to congratulate you because with this initiative, there is nothing like rogue revenue collectors coming to you to collect revenue on daily basis on behalf of the council which will not be relayed to the council’s account and which might lead to argument and misunderstanding between you and the council. With this, once you make payment, a receipt will be printed out on the spot by the PoP and you can be rest assured that you have indeed made payment, which will go straight into the coffers of the council.”

“This will in turn empower the council to provide the necessary amenities that will make life easy for all and sundry. So, let us cooperate with all the revenue officers. We have launched this in Ikeja local government, Ejigbo local government and two other local governments and it is working very well. You can be rest assured that EcoBank will support the local government, the market women and in fact, everybody to make sure that life is easier for all,” She concluded.

  • Doctors remove Iheanacho’s leg PoP

    Doctors remove Iheanacho’s leg PoP

Flying Eagles Chief coach Manu Garba has revealed that Manchester City FC of England’s doctors removed the Plaster of Paris (POP) in one of Kelechi’s leg last week Thursday.

According to coach Manu Garba, Manchester City’s management called to also express their reservations over the various media reports in Nigeria that they have refused to release the creative midfielder, who won the best player in the last U-17 Championship in United Arab Emirates to join the U-20 team for the 2015 AYC in Senegal.

“Kelechi Iheanacho is a player that can add value to any team. But at present, he has an ankle injury. They had just removed the PoP on Thursday. I spoke with the Man City official who called me that they are receiving negative media reports from here in Nigeria that they are not willing to release the player. He said Kelechi is down with injury, that when he is fit, and there is time, he would join the team”.

Manu Garba further confirmed that the player would surely add value to his team , and that he would not hesitate to invite him as soon as he is fit: ” If Kelechi were to be around in the match we played against Enyimba, he would have added value to the team, because, he is a player who would have converted some of those chances that were thrown away. He would have buried some of them”.

The former junior international boasted that though the Man City player would be valuable in team, but that does not imply that he would have automatic jersey in the team.

“In my team, there is no automatic shirt for anybody or any player. This was obvious when Iheanacho came for the qualifiers against  Tanzania, he could not displace those in the team and he started on the bench. When he comes back, he has to show us what he is capable of doing before he would pick a starting shirt or making the 21-man list”.

The former Gombe United player said: ” We do not rely on individual player. If you recall, during the World Cup when Isaac Success got injured, a lot of Nigerians were worried. They did not know that Taiwo Awoniyi was sitting and waiting for an opportunity and he proved everyone wrong by scoring four goals and a lot of assists. There are a lot of players that did not partake in this team, still waiting for chances and they are as good as any other player,” he said.

  • Six bodies unclaimed in Abuja

Only one of the seven bodies of the job applicants who died in last weekend’s Immigration service recruitment fiasco in Abuja, has been released.

The family of Oyisa Yusuf, a 35-year-old mother of one, has taken her body away.

National Hospital spokesman Tayo Haastrup, a doctor, said six other bodies are yet unclaimed.

He said: “They were about 70 injured initially brought here but reduced to 30 as they were being treated and discharged. And now we have six in the ward, among them are two pregnant women.

“They are now in good condition and have been yearning to go home. It is most likely we will discharge them tomorrow (today).

“What will still be keeping the others is just the POP around their legs and little pains. Nobody died in our custody, the bodies were brought to the National Hospital from the stadium.

“We are still waiting for relations to come and identify bodies and this is followed by proper procedures, like the police report. As soon as all these are done, bodies will be released to the families.”

Haastrup chastised the organisers of the tragic recruitment, saying: “For a programme of this magnitude, there should be a medical team involved so as to forestall this kind of situation.”

Recalling what happened, Folashade Olanrewaju, a six- month- old expectant woman, said: “I got there before 7am. At the main gate, I saw a crowd, as I was trying to enter the stadium. All I knew after that was finding myself in the hospital. A policeman told me I should thank God that I’m alive. They asked me of my husband’s phone member and they called to inform him.”

An Osun State indigene, the woman, added: “I am okay now and I want to be discharged. I only feel little pains. I am still interested in the NIS job since I am still alive. I have a National Diploma certificate in Business Administration from the Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State.”

Another expectant applicant, Endurance Ben, from Benue State, said: “I was also there before 7am on Saturday. The gates were locked and we were asked to jump over the drainage close to the stadium fence.

“Many people jumped and were trapped. I collapsed while waiting for the test to start. I am married with a kid. I studied Business Administration from Benue State Polytechnic. I came from Benue State for this aptitude test. I am okay now. I want to go home.”
