Investor foresees emerging economic triangle along PH, Uyo, Aba axis

A real estate investor in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, My-ACE China (aka Mayor of Housing), has foreseen emerging massive “economic triangle” along Rivers/Akwa Ibom/Abia states corridors in their states.

China, who drew the attention of the governors of the concerned states to the emerging potential, urged them to take steps to accelerate the economic triangle.

He made the statement while speaking to newsmen in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital at the conclusion of his business trip to the state, at the weekend.

According to him, the massive land, blue economy and huge deposits of oil mineral in the State hold great potential and immense economic advantage for them, adding that if well harnessed, and managed, it might surpass that of Lagos state.

The real estate mogul who is the Managing Director of the Housing and Construction Mayor Limited, said the envisaged economic corridor would compete favourably with the Lagos economic hub or even better.

He said, “Talking about ‘Economic Triangle’, the only place that can wrest economic power from Lagos is Akwa Ibom, Abia, and Rivers states axis or corridor. This corridor contains more than Lagos has, if they can be interconnected with smooth roads, ports, and if their blue potentials are unlocked. They will not only wrest power from Lagos but would be more lucrative.”

The investor who is behind the emerging Alesa Highlands Green Smart City in Eleme near Port Harcourt, said the new ‘Economic Triangle’ has a bigger potential due to massive land assets with the corridor plus blue economy and the existing hydrocarbon industry.

Explaining, he said Aba, in Abia State, provides the biggest fabrication capacity in West Africa to supply goods to the Gulf of Guinea; Port Harcourt provides access to the Gulf of Guinea for off-taking Aba products, and the Uyo provides deep sea port at Ibaka and international airport facilities as well as forest reserves for massive agro-economy.

  • Port Harcourt estate to attract high net worth executives

Port Harcourt estate to attract high net worth executives

A mini-city within the Garden City to be known as the PH-AirportCity has been unveiled in the Rivers State capital. The estate located near the Port Harcourt International Airport in the Omagwa area of the state is said to be a piece of investment initiative to attract back topmost executives most of whom fled the Garden City in recent years in the wake of threats of insecurity.

The mini-city, PH-AirportCity is planned to commence with 2000 houses which is to be implemented in phases. The scheme is a partnership between the Rivers State Government through the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority (GPCDA) and Masta Services Company Limited ably superintended by Ugo Ohuabunwa, a renowned and career professional builder with 40 years of experience in the design, construction, engineering and building profession.

The project is propelled by a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) known as Masta-Rivers Development Company Limited with 70% to the private equity holder (Masta Services Company Limited) and 30% to the GPCDA on behalf of the Rivers State government.

The unveiling attracted a large audience that filled the Royal Hall at the exotic Hotel Presidential in the state capital during the PH-AIRPORTCITY Project launch and unveiling of the Masta Services Limited Partnership with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).

The mini city within the larger Greater Port Harcourt City, with area of approximately 1, 900 square kilometres (40, 000 Hectares of land) and spanning eight Local Government Areas, with a projected population of about two (2) Million people planned to be an extension of the old Port Harcourt City while guaranteeing urban growth and gradual integrating of both cities as one single unit. Hence, the referencing of PH-Airport City as ‘A City within a city’ planned to be Port Harcourt’s most visionary development, a city that connects Luxury Living with modern infrastructure and investment opportunities is to sit on 80 hectares of land with Certificates ready for investors, according to Ade Adeoshun, Consultant (Brands & Marketing) who spoke at the event. Adeoshun has already described the day as a great dawn in Rivers State, saying what has just happened to the state was no easy breakthrough considering its hugely unlocked oil and gas concentrates potentials of the Nigerian economy.

In his master presentation, Ugo Ohuabunwa, the Managing Director and CEO of Masta Services, who is doubles as the Managing Partner of Masta-Rivers Development Company Ltd, said concerned developers were aggrieved that the city was undergoing infrastructure decay, requiring urgent action, hence, the idea of a mini-city within the city.

Saying Port Harcourt was unique in Africa, Ohuabunwa, described as a construction personality of 40 years standing whose siblings of the illustrious Ohuabunwa dynasty are top players in various industrial sectors, reminded investors that Port Harcourt was a unique city connected to Aba (Abia State), Uyo (Akwa Ibom State), Owerri (Imo State), Onitsha (Anambra State), and Yenagoa (Bayelsa State) in a matter of between an hour or two.

He asserted that people fled Port Harcourt not only because of insecurity but due to a lack of world class residential homes for the top-most executives who work hard. He said such people deserved a decent location of residence to rest and feel safe.

“We want to change that; we want to create a mini city in the main city for the highest class. This will free space for the middle class. The new city is deliberately located close to the Port Harcourt International Airport and will become the first aerotropolis, which is an urban area where the airport is the central economic driver, with infrastructure, land use, and economy structured around it. This concept expands beyond a typical airport city to include a wide range of connected developments, such as commercial, residential, logistics, and entertainment areas, all feeding off the airport’s global connectivity.”, he asserted.

He mentioned affordability as a key strategy, saying luxury is affordable. To achieve the initiative, Ohuabunwa said the company got land directly from the government partner, loan opportunities for buyers from the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), and further funding from the Stanbic IBTC Mortgage company.

On what the mini-city and the modern houses boast of, the CEO said the houses range from one-bedroom affairs to five-bedroom classes with e-security, CCTV system, malls, road network, storm water drainage, central sewage system, gas to power, gas for cooking, fibre optics, four fire stations, etc. The minimum rate may be N32m. He said this has not been done in Nigeria because the buyer’s money is not needed at the initial stage to build the houses.

Speaking earlier, Melody Ukwa, the Port Harcourt branch manager of the FMBN, confirmed the narrative, saying they have different types of mortgage offerings. “There is the category of Rent-to-Ownership scheme; there is renovation scheme; there is individual construction loan, there is Diaspora fund; there is National Housing Fund, etc.” All loans are for not more than 30 years.

Bennett Chu, Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority, told newsmen in an interview that the state government was keen to provide massive housing opportunities. He said the Authority was both a regulator and partner in the project, saying every single proposition was carefully verified. He added that the Authority suggested some of the features in the SPV because the state wanted the best for buyers and investors.

  • FEC approves concession of Port Harcourt International Airport

FEC approves concession of Port Harcourt International Airport

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Thursday approved the concession of the Port Harcourt International Airport to private investors for more efficient management and improved service delivery.

Meanwhile, the Council also approved the long-awaited contract for the provision of engineering infrastructure in Maitama 2 District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Management, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the State House, Abuja, shortly after the meeting, which was presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He, however, assured aviation workers that the concession would not result in job losses, stressing that the government remains committed to protecting workers’ rights while pursuing reforms to make the aviation sector more viable.

“We have two major airports now that we have approvals in terms of the business case to begin to finalise with private investors. One of them is the Port Harcourt International Airport. Let me assure the unions that nobody will lose his job as a result of these concessions. I am pro-union, pro-workers, and I will engage them to ensure they are comfortable with the process, Keyamo said.

The Minister noted that the move was part of government’s effort to ensure that airports operate sustainably.

He explained that many airports currently run at a loss, with revenue from Lagos, Abuja, and Kano used to subsidise others.

“Before we came in, Port Harcourt was a no-go area — no investor was interested. But today, because of the activities of this government, it has become the beautiful bride. Over six investors competed to manage the airport,” he said.

Keyamo also listed other aviation-related approvals secured from FEC, including contracts for the maintenance and support services for airport management solutions across Nigeria’s five international airports; Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu, as well as the procurement and installation of advanced tertiary power systems and navigational aids.

Additionally, the Council approved the purchase of 15 airport rescue and firefighting vehicles to meet International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards and the construction of a permanent headquarters for the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) in Abuja.

Another significant approval was the exclusion of all Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) residential properties within and around airports from sale to private individuals, a move aimed at preserving operational safety and security within airport environments.

FEC also approved the concession of biometric verification systems at airports to integrate passengers’ National Identification Numbers (NIN) into boarding processes, enhance aviation security, and curb the use of fake identities.

Keyamo said the ministry also secured approvals for contracts under its 2024 budget to improve lighting systems at airports, enabling night operations and helping local airlines increase passenger capacity and revenue.

“These reforms are designed to make our airports safer, more efficient, and commercially sustainable. We are bringing them to global standards,” the minister affirmed.

Also speaking, Minister of the FCT, Chief Nyesom Wike, disclosed that the Council approved the long-awaited contract for the provision of engineering infrastructure in Maitama 2 District of the FCT.

Wike said the Maitama 2 project, which covers an estimated 786 hectares of land, had stalled for nearly five years after it was first awarded, until the current administration took decisive steps to revive it.

“This contract was awarded about five years ago but did not take off. When Mr. President came, the Federal Executive Council terminated that contract. Today, FEC has approved a fresh contract for the engineering infrastructure of Maitama 2,” the Minister stated.

He explained that Maitama 2 would serve as a new residential and commercial district in Abuja, adding that the project aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to expanding development across the FCT.

“Many people had been allocated land in Maitama 2 before this administration, but there was no provision of infrastructure. This is a very ambitious project, and we are determined to give it all the attention it deserves to open up that district,” Wike said.

The Minister also announced FEC’s ratification of contracts for the design and construction of official residences for the heads of key courts, including the President of the Court of Appeal, the President of the National Industrial Court, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, and the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court.

According to him, the move reflects the administration’s recognition of the judiciary as a vital pillar of governance and its commitment to improving the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers.

In addition, Wike revealed that the Council approved the provision of water supply to several satellite towns, including Karu, Karshi, Orozo, and Bwari.

He recalled that President Tinubu had earlier inaugurated the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project, with a promise to extend it to surrounding communities.

“We have flagged off that project, and by the grace of God, we believe that by May next year, it will be inaugurated,” he said.

He further noted that the Council ratified the emergency rehabilitation works recently carried out at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, which was completed in time for the inauguration of the ECOWAS Parliament earlier this year.

“That project was awarded under emergency when Mr. President directed that the Conference Centre should meet international standards. To the glory of God, it has now been fully rehabilitated and inaugurated,” he said.

Wike assured residents of continued infrastructural development across the FCT under the Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing that Abuja would remain a model city for modern urban planning and governance.

  • Port Harcourt Airport’s revenue hits N21b

Port Harcourt Airport’s revenue hits N21b

Regional General Manager, South South and Airport Manager of Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo International Airport (PHIA), Omagwa, Mrs. Ifesinachi Lynda Ezike, has stated the airport generated a total revenue of N21.41 billion or about $631,479  between 2021 and 2024.

In a presentation titled :”  Investment Opportunities In Airport Public-Private Partnerships”, Ezike  said the airport generated N2,141,273,717.79 ($109,949.39) in 2021 and N10,643,614,713.83 ($ 71,112.08) in 2024. According to her, a total of N 7,465,086,663.73 ($171,668.78), representing 70 per cent of total 2024 revenue has been generated between January and June 2025 (a six month period). N1,988,772,170.57 ($4,073.52) was generated in January and N1,284,877,729.02 ($ 11,668.20) in June 2025.

She said the Port Harcourt International Airport established in 1978 was designed to bolster connectivity in Rivers State and underpin economic expansion and has undergone significant modernisation, now serving approximately 1.5 million passengers annually across domestic and international routes. It supports 64 daily flights with major airlines like Lufthansa and Qatar Airways.

In her analysis , Ezike identified the strength of the airport to its  strategic location in Nigeria’s economic hub, growing air travel demand in Nigeria and Africa, world-class international passenger and cargo terminals.

She listed other attractions of the airport to include its annual passenger traffic capacity of about 1 million and extensive land mass of over 2,687 hectares for expansion.

On its challenges , she said the managers are  contending with ageing infrastructure and inadequate facilities, reliance on manual operations and high operational costs, limited international airline operations : only four  international  carriers ,heavy dependence on aviation-related income and aging staff demographic and need for continuous training.

She highlighted opportunities in the airport to include: diversification into non-aeronautical revenue like hotels, technology adoption for efficiency and passenger experience, the potential to become a regional aviation hub for West Africa.

Others she said include:  expanding cargo handling to capitalize on e-commerce and available land for airline home base facilities.

Ezike said: There are threats like economic downturn impacts traffic and purchasing power, increasing competition from other regional airports, security challenges impacting operations and safety, cost and availability of spare parts for operations and fuel price volatility affecting airline profitability.

“Port Harcourt International Airport has met over 75 per cent of the NCAA requirements for aerodrome certification, with the aerodrome manual and SOPs already developed and appropriate implements to close gaps on order for the aerodrome license to be acquired.

“ There is a need for the  construction of a taxiway lane to the isolated aircraft parking bay, implementation of airfield lighting CAT 2, installation of conventional taxiway lighting and construction of a ground handling equipment bay.”

She further said the rationale for the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Model of airport development has become imperative in order to achieve improved Infrastructure.

She said: “PPPs enable project delivery without sole reliance on public funds. This will bring about increased efficiency since private sector expertise enhances project efficiency and quality, sharing of risks distributed by PPPs thereby reducing the burden on governments, innovation and cost savings. Private involvement drives innovation, technology, and cost efficiencies. The other one is enhanced service delivery.

“Port Harcourt International Airport stands as a gateway to economic transformation for Rivers State and Nigeria at large. The airport has witnessed significant infrastructural improvements and service enhancements, laying a strong foundation for future growth.

Diverse investment opportunities exist across non-aeronautical revenue streams, infrastructure development, and service optimization.

“The adoption of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models offers a strategic path to sustainable development, innovation, and financial viability. By embracing effective governance models and transparent implementation processes, stakeholders can unlock immense value while enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency,” she concluded.

  • Lagos, Port Harcourt get smart air quality monitoring

Lagos, Port Harcourt get smart air quality monitoring

A pioneering 18-month environmental initiative has been launched to tackle rising air pollution in Lagos and Port Harcourt, deploying a network of low-cost sensors (LCS) and artificialintelligence (AI) to monitor PM2.5 dangerous fine particulate matter commonly linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

The project, titled “PM2.5 Monitoring and Policy Recommendations for Lagos and Port Harcourt Transport Systems Using Low-Cost Sensors and Artificial Intelligence,” officially commenced on February 1, 2025, with funding from the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC).

With Nigeria’s limited air quality monitoring infrastructure, the initiative represents a critical step toward data-driven transport and environmental health policies, particularly in urban centres where pollution levels remain largely undocumented.

The Project Lead and Associate Professor of Environmental Chemistry at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Dr. Rose Alani, said “This project is designed to fill a long-standing data gap. For too long, decisions have been made without reliable data on pollution from urban transport. We aim to change that, starting with Lagos and Port Harcourt”

A statement listed the major objectives of the project to include: 15 Low-Cost Sensors: 10 deployed in Lagos, five in Port Harcourt; 12-month continuous monitoring of PM2.5 along key transport routes; AI analysis to forecast pollution trends and inform policy; and Open-access data to increase transparency and public engagement.

Lagos, one of Africa’s most populous cities, grapples with daily gridlock and vehicular emissions, while Port Harcourt faces additional threats from industrial activities and black carbon pollution. Both cities are high-priority zones for robust air quality interventions.

Director of Weather Forecasting Services at NiMet and Professor of Atmospheric Science at the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Vincent Weli, said: “Port Harcourt’s air quality is further compromised by oil-related industrial emission. This initiative will help establish a scientific baseline for action.”

Weli said “The project leverages artificial intelligence to not only track pollution in real time but also forecast future trends based on variables like traffic density, weather patterns, and urban development”.

“AI offers forecasting precision that has been missing in Nigeria’s air quality management,” explained Dr. Davies Rene Segera, an AI and Environmental Data Specialist from the University of Nairobi. “It moves us from reactive policies to proactive, data-driven interventions.”

The General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, said “At LASEPA, we are committed to ensuring environmental data leads to real outcomes,” said “With localized, reliable data, we can advocate more effectively for clean transport policies that safeguard public health.”

Mr. Abdul Muizz Ogbara, Research and Evaluation Specialist at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), added “This aligns perfectly with our vision for a more sustainable and efficient transport network. Evidence-based policymaking is critical to that mission.”

Beyond Lagos and Port Harcourt, the initiative will map existing air quality efforts across Nigeria and produce a national report to guide future investments and coordination, building long-term capacity for environmental data management.

“This is a model of how data science and environmental science can work together to solve urgent public health challenges,” said Richard Sserunjogi of the AirQo team, which is providing technical support and data visualization platforms.

Funded by EPIC at the University of Chicago—a global leader in energy and environmental policy—the project offers a scalable solution to Nigeria’s urban pollution crisis, setting a precedent for smart, science-driven interventions across the continent.
