Post UTME: UI to admit 3,700 from 8,992 candidates

The Vice-Chancellor of University of Ibadan (UI), Prof Isaac Adewole Tuesday disclosed that the institution would only admit 3,700 candidates out of 8,992 that wrote the post University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) last weekend.

He also added that five candidates who scored highest scores will be given scholarship by the premier institution.

‎Prof. Adewole who was represented by the Deputy-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emilolorun Ayelari‎ while addressing journalist yesterday disclosed that the result is now available at the institution’s website for candidates to view.

The candidates are: Adetunji AbdulRaham-55328333ED, scored 86, Law; Amaji Obinna Charles, 55110959DE scored 86, Medicine and Surgery, Adebiyi Tijesunimi-55361970BC, scored 85, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Oke Dorcas-55974720AJ, 83, Medicine and Surgery and Olowosulu Cassandra Olawumi-56630251JB, 83 and also of Medicine and Surgery.

‎Adewole said:”23,200 candidates scored above 200 in UTME, 20,800 applied for the post UTME in our institution and only 19,268 took the screening and examination. Our new method of admitting students with the O’levels and UTME result has really reduced students from withdrawing at the first year due to poor performances.

“The performance of the five best candidates that were given automatic scholarship from this institution will b monitored and they may be retained after their studies here” he said.

Adewole warned members of the public not to influence the institutions admission officials for admission into the institution.”

The UI VC also admonished parents and guardians not to force courses of their choice on the children and wards but should allow them to study courses that they have the ability to cope with.

  • 65,000 candidates to sit for Unilorin Post-UTME exam

65,000 candidates to sit for Unilorin Post-UTME exam

The University of Ilorin has cleared 65, 000 candidates for the 2015/2016 post UTME screening which begins today.

The Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs of the institution, Mr Kunle Akogun, who made this known in a statement in Ilorin on Sunday said the weeklong exercise would hold simultaneously in Ilorin and Lagos.

Akogun said only candidates who scored a minimum of 180 marks in the 2015 UTME and made the University their first choice would take part in the computer-based test (CBT).

He advised candidates to bring along to their respective centres printed copies of their examination schedules indicating that they were slated to write the examination at a particular date and time.

Akogun said this became necessary as there were many batches for the examination daily.

He also advised prospective candidates to bring along with them payment receipts generated from the students’ portal of the University’s website.

He warned that the accreditation team would insist on the receipt from the varsity’s website to verify candidate’s identity— through pictures that tally with the face of each candidate.

He said that only registered candidates for the screening exercise would be allowed into the screening premises.

Akogun cautioned the candidates against indecent dressing and bringing of cell phones or any electronic appliance into the examination hall.

“Candidates for the pre-admission screening exercise are also advised to be decently dressed, as candidates with indecent dressing will not be allowed into the screening premises.

“Also, phones and all other forms of mobile communication, electronic devices, bags and luggage are not allowed within the screening premises, he said.

Seventy three thousand, two hundred and fifty of the over 107,000 candidates that applied for admission into the University this year scored 180 marks and above at the UTME.

By the close of the portal yesterday, only 65, 000 out of the 73, 250 qualified candidates registered for the post UMTE.

  • Still on the UNILAG post-UTME conundrum

PROFESSOR Dibu Ojerinde is, no doubt, one of the most popular men in Nigeria at the moment. He is the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). He holds the fate of over 1.4 million candidates who sat for the 2015/2016 JAMB examination in his hands, and that is a big deal.

For many students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), going to school the past two days has been very hectic. Parents, well-wishers and candidates have been flooding the school gate and amphitheatre premises to protest the new policy of being sent to other schools for the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Needless to say, this has helped in intensifying the traffic at the school gate.

I read somewhere that the University of Lagos is the 5th most sought-after university this year with over 62,472 candidates that sat for this year’s UTME examination. Going by unofficial statistics, about 70 per cent of the candidates got 180 and 200 as their score and that is roughly about 43,730 candidates clamouring to write the post-UTME exams. This is still a far cry compared to the about 6,500 candidates UNILAG will eventually get to admit later this year. I cannot even begin to imagine the situation at the University of Ilorin, which has over 107,488 applicants.

I really do not know why JAMB didn’t communicate all these changes to the applicants before now. Many had already gone ahead to buy change of course forms and now they have to deal with this too. It makes one wonder if all these decisions are being made and implemented spontaneously. The importance of communication cannot be overemphasized. These changes ought to have been communicated to these candidates as soon as they were made, along with other vital information. There was so much confusion among the candidates who weren’t shortlisted for the post-UTME exercise in UNILAG and there is no way for them to know the new school their details have been sent to.

Some conspiracy theories have also been making the rounds of  Ojerinde having had secret meetings with the owners of some private schools in Nigeria who have solicited for more students which led him to think up the new policy of sending these ‘unfortunate’ candidates to private schools for their post-UTME exams. There’s no evidence to confirm this suggestion but this wouldn’t necessarily be a bad idea if only the tuition fees of these schools were actually affordable. But that’s obviously not the case. The average Nigerian parent would be expected to sell their body parts and still take bank loans to afford it.

I lost faith in JAMB after my third or fourth attempt at gaining admission and failing yet again. I had to resort to taking direct entry classes and exams to finally gain my admission. It is apparently not an easy route, but it’s a much healthier method of getting admitted into the university of first choice without partaking in all the stress and confusion that come from writing UTME examinations.

  • Applicants write essay before post-UTME at FUNAAB

Applicants write essay before post-UTME at FUNAAB

No fewer than 6,000 applicants sat for the 2014/2015 post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). The exercise was held in the e-Exam Hall.

Before the computer-based test, applicants were mandated to write essays of 500-word long on the topics: “The future I see for myself”; “The impacts that I want to make through my life”; “Things that are most important to me in life and “What I intend to do with the course I want to study at FUNAAB”.

As the applicants went into the hall for the test, Michael Adetola, one of them, shared his thoughts on the essay he wrote. He said: “Since my passion is in Electrical Electronics Engineering, I want to be a solution to the nation’s epileptic electricity.”

The applicants were told to submit the essay before entering the hall as part of the requisite to participate in the exams. The candidates were required to answer 60 questions in 30 minutes.

Mayowa Samson, an applicant, said: “The exam was good but it was more of English. I am confident that God would grant me admission this year.”

There were no hitches recorded during the test, unlike the previous year which had more than 35,000 applicants on campus. Students were barred from entering the campus to prevent malpractice and cheating.

The school buses were available to convey the applicants in and out of campus. The results were released the following day.

  • 2,000 write post-UTME at Abia varsity

2,000 write post-UTME at Abia varsity

Uturu town in Abia State came alive last week when the Abia State University (ABSU) conducted its third post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

A staff member of the university, who pleaded not to be named, said the examination was conducted to fill vacant admission slots. He noted that the number of admission seekers into the university dropped because of high fee.

“A lot of people are discouraged from seeking admission here because of the rising school fees. Many of them have taken solace in the neighboring institutions where tuition is relatively affordable,” he said.

Some of the candidates who spoke to CAMPUSLIFE said they were not happy with the conduct of the examination. Nwafor Cynthia, a candidate of Microbiology, said the screening was her last resort, adding that she has lost hope of gaining admission this year.

She said: “I am very happy with my chances of being admitted into the university this year. I had lost hope earlier. I was already preparing for the 2014 UTME when the news of this examination got to me.”

Another applicant, Okeke Obinna said: “I am optimistic that I will be offered admission into this university. From the way I fared in the examination, I believe my chances are high.”

However, some candidates lamented the inadequate time allotted to them by the invigilators. Nwaokoro Chukwuemeka, who applied to study Public Administration, said: “The questions were not particularly difficult. But I could not finish because they gave us insufficient time.”

Ike Ngozi commended the management for successfully managing the screening. “Even though members of the Man O’ War were not around to help in conducting the test, the management did well in organising the process. The invigilators handled every stage of the exercise with a high level of commitment,” she said.

  • ‘ASUU cannot invalidate Post-UTME’

THE Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU)has no power to invalidate the Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) conducted by any institution, the Deputy Vice Chancellor(Academics) of the Federal University Technology (FUT), Minna, Professor Abdullahi Bala, has declared.

Bala was reacting to threats by ASUU not to recognise the outcome of the Post-UTME being conducted in various universities due to its four- week old strike.

ASUU argued that conducting an examination is the duty of academic staff, warning students not to sit for the tests.

But Bala dismissed the threat, saying the conduct of Post- UTME is the exclusive responsibility of the office of the Vice Chancellor, not ASUU.

Arguing that Vice Chancellors are the chief admission officers of their institutions, Bala explained that Post-UTME candidates are not yet consideredbonafide students of any university.

He insisted ASUU can only lay claim to students that have already been admitted.

Justifying the 2-day conduct of Post-UTME test for over 4,000 prospective candidates of FUT at GidanKwano campus in Minna, the DVC told reporters the management of the university recognises and appreciates ASUU’s plight in the on-going strike.

He however warned that the body should not go beyond its limit, stressing that admission is purely an administrative matter.

Bala disclosed that for successful conduct of the test in the institution, a committee of senior staff, who are not expected to join the industrial action, was set up for the exercise while non-academic staff supervised it.

The DVC assured the candidates not to exercise fears over ASUU threats, saying the examination being conducted has not fallen short of any law capable of leading to its cancellation or invalidation.

The Academic Staff Union of the institution had threatened not to recognise the candidates if the authority went ahead with the exercise, which kicked off last Friday.

Over 4,000 candidates are undergoing screening at the university under the supervision of non- academic staff.

    The exercise ends on Tuesday.

  • ASUU to students: write post-UTME at your risk

Striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that successful students in the various 2013 post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in government-owned universities may not be recognised, if offered admission through the exercise.

The union also described as cheap “political statement” the alleged pronouncement by Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam that the strike would be over today.

The union said the strike would only be called off when the government implements all the components in the 2009 Federal Government/ASUU agreement and the 2012 memorandum of understanding (MoU).

Speaking yesterday at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, the chapter’s ASUU Chairman, Dr. Abdulfatai Jimoh, said none of its members would be involved in the conduct the examination for the over 3,000 candidates expected to take it tomorrow and Saturday in the institution.

Jimoh, who addressed reporters on the level of compliance by his members to the strike, warned that “any student admitted through the ongoing post-UTME is on his or her own, because we will not recognise or teach such students”.
