  • Posterity will judge my tenure – Ambode

•As he commissions ultra modern Lagos Theatre in Epe

With less than a week to the end of his tenure, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akimwunmi Ambode at the weekend before his kinsmen at Epe said he has served humanIty to his best and posterity will judge him.

The out-going governor spoke during the inauguration of a 400- seater ultra modern Lagos theatre in his home town Epe.

Ambode expressed gratitude to God for giving him the grace to serve humanity and govern Lagos, expressing fulfillment with the projects executed by his administration within the ancient town of Epe and the adjoining communities.

He said it was particularly fulfilling that he was able to implement a number of projects which changed the outlook of the town and made life further comfortable for the people, as well as improve the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) of the State.

“This is a more fulfillimg day for me. If there is anything for me to say, it is that I am fulfilled that a day like this can come in the history of this town(Epe). I mean four days to go and in four years, we have turned things around”.

“God has given us the grace that I can come back here and actually spend my last weekend of those four years with my people”, expressing delight that among the theatres he established, he has the opportunity  to come and commission the one in Epe.

“We are very delighted that among the Art Theatres that we have established, we have the opportunity to come and commission the one in Epe. The first one – the Lagos Theatre in Oregun was commissioned by Mr President and then followed by the one in Igando. That of Badagry will be commissioned on Monday making four out of the six that we had actually planned. Two to go and believing strongly that the vision to actually bring out the best of the talents of our younger ones is part of this structure that you are seeing here,” Governor Ambode said.

He said the initiative to construct the theatres across the State was borne out of the vision to create a framework to bring out the creativity and innovative skills of talented youths, as well as serving as a platform to scale up communal bonding among the people.

On other initiative in the tourism sector, Ambode said: “We are also renovating Glover Memorial Hall; it’s been fully paid for and in another few months, they should be able to commission it also so that we can have top class tourist attractions in all these locations. People can decide to come and watch a play in Epe and then drive back to Lagos.

“I am  very grateful to God. You never planned what you met on the way. Having had that opportunity to be elected as governor and for four years, one is  able to do it in good health and mind. To God be the glory”.

“The main purpose of governance is giving back to humanity and serve selflessly. All that we put together, I am happy I was able to do that and God gave me the grace. The fact that I am also leaving in good health, is a sort of fulfilment for me”, he enthused.

While describing governance as a continum, Ambode expressed the hope that his successor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu will continue where he will stop.

While thanking people of Epe Division for standing by him and the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ambode urged them to also support the incoming government of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu to further develop the State.

Veteran actress, Joke Silva commended the Governor for the theatres, expressing optimism that the next administration would build on the gains recorded in the sector in the last four years.

Also, Chairman of Epe Local Government, Hon Adedoyin Adesanya said the people of Epe were grateful to Ambode for the projects executed in the division, saying that the theatre would go a long way in boosting tourism and entertainment, as well as create jobs for the people.

Facilities at the theatre include standard furnishing, gallery, artiste changing room, rehearsal hall, restaurant, restrooms, power generating sets and well-laid out car park, among others.

  • Documenting Ooni for posterity

    Documenting Ooni for posterity

Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has celebrated his first anniversary on the throne. A researcher/author Oluwaseun Okunnuga, has written a compendium on the monarch’s efforts to unite the Yoruba. ADEGUNLE OLUGBAMAILA writes on  what inspired Okunnuga.

A researcher, Oluwaseun Okunnuga, has taken note of the efforts of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II to unite the Yoruba race since the monarch mounted the throne over a year ago.
Okunnuga captured the Ooni’s exploits in the last one year in a compendium entitled: Spiritual king of the source: On a mission beyond mortal dream.
The Oonirisa’s ascension to the throne, Okunnuga said, could not be separated from his modest upbringing.
According to him, the Oonirisa’s in just one year, is rewriting the history of the traditional stool. “His gospel of peace and his resilience to unite the troubled Yoruba race continues to reverberate among his kinsmen at the home front and in the Diaspora. He remains focused to his slogan: ‘One people: One tribe’ which continues to earn him accolades among his kinsmen.”
Okunnuga praised the monarch’s diplomacy, saying he often leaves his spiritual abode in Ile-Ife to honour invitations from other kings, and using same avenue to rub minds with them on issues germane to the progress of the Yoruba race. Barely a year in the saddle, the Oonirisa has continued to extend olive branch to even older monarchs, especially across the Southwest region.
According to him, “Yeye, as he was fondly referred to in his boyhood, was a ‘corporate’ cobbler at 14 years. Four years later, he hawked beans and soft drinks on the streets of Ibadan Oyo State. This, he did, to support his struggling parents who were fending for his four other siblings. In his 20S, he struggled to attain the status of a daring entrepreneur. Before hitting 30 however, he already had an agenda with fate which had catapulted him among a handful of successful realtors in Nigeria.
Speaking with The Nation, the author, Okunnuga said the yet-to-be-released compendium contains articles, pictorials, monographs and speeches of Oonirisa from when he was enthroned.
The book, according to Okunnuga, not only highlights Ooni’s quest for unity among the Yoruba, but also his numerous efforts towards reawakening the consciousness of Ile-Ife as the cradle of Yoruba race.
The author said: “It chronicles the distinct, pacifist, and ethereally, yet mystifying actions of the monarch, along with his commendable representations on behalf of the Yoruba empire, the cultural renaissance through various strategic acculturation and social and economic development of Ile-Ife, his mindful efforts that has continued to raise people’s consciousness about the ‘source of civilisation’.”
Okunnuga said the 10-chapter book espouses Oonirisa as both physical and spiritual idol, budding entrepreneur, a personality with humility and candour and an emblem of hope for the black continent. It also beams a searchlight on Ooni’s virtues and various escapades in realising his mission.
Going down memory lane, Okunnuga said owing to illiteracy, many of African oral literature could not be properly documented for posterity. He lamented that worse still, the authenticity of some of those already in print are either being distorted, or contested simply because they were not captured at the time of existence. This, Okunnuga observed, is what his book hopes to correct.”Records are not kept simply to assist the weakness of memory, and to operate as guides to the future. I, therefore, owe it to myself and posterity to ensure that these facts are permanently placed on record; bringing together a compendium of scattered articles, monographs and sophisticated intellectual document, which, if not done now, could have been lost to the dustbin of history,” he said
The author noted that despite the enormity of his power, Oonirisa has remained largely lowly, balancing his authority with social reality and spreading his arms to all regardless of individuals’ social, economic and religious affiliations. Okunnuga praised Oonirisa’s unparalleled generosity is fast reversing the age-long tradition where a king is expected to receive and receive while giving little or nothing back to his subjects.
“He said: “Indeed, within a limited time, he has touched base with his people given his humanitarian activities which have transformed lives within and outside Ile-Ife. The Oonirisa has opened a new vista for unison of his countrymen and by extension the diaspora; but more important than this fact, he has continued to fortify the position of ‘Arole Oodua’ on the tablets of contemporary history as the preeminent keeper of  ‘seal’ of Yoruba nation.
“It is instructive that God, in His infinite grace, got him out of his Lagos abode, crowning and instructing him to promptly reunite the Yoruba race; a mandate to spread Yoruba custom, cultures and their very way of life beneath the blue sky. Inevitably the celestial has further thrust tasks at him, and which he must accomplish. Even now, the cultural renaissance through various strategic acculturation and social economic development in Ile-Ife is unprecedented. His efforts towards building a thriving economy around ‘our enterprising culture’ and monuments has continued to raise people’s consciousness about Ile-Ife, the foremost cultural centre of the world.”
The book, he said, will be ideal to students of History, African Studies and young and old seeking inspiration from individuals who rose to become role models.

  • That ‘Posterity’ advert

SIR: Currently, a nebulous group called ‘Protectors of Nigerian Posterity‘ is running a political campaign advert on major national televisions. In the said advert, the group is placing President Goodluck Jonathan in the mould of international leaders  like Dr Martin Luther King Jnr. of the American civil rights fame, Lee Kuan of Singapore who is reputed for transforming that nation from a third world one to a first rate one. The group is also talking about the legendary Nelson Mandela of South Africa and President Barrack Obama of the United States of America. In the unashamedly sycophantic propaganda, the group speaks of the transformational agenda of the president, saying that those supporting the president are more than those against him and it climbed the political high horse by chorusing that change was not easy to accept.

Of course, it is propaganda, pure and simple. This is deliberate falsehood with the intention to mislead so as to achieve programmed result. And the aim of the Protectors of Nigerian Posterity is that Jonathan is doing a wonderful job in the country and that there is need for people to support him.

And at times like this when the virus of insurgency is chocking the nation, a more understanding leadership would have withdrawn the advert. But not for this administration which is so consumed with the vaulting ambition of retaining power for itself and dispensing political patronage to the army of hangers-on and sycophants. This state of affairs cannot continue and the press must stand up against this political infamy and communication transgressions.

It is true that purposeful, dynamic and goal oriented leadership do not grow on every tree. It is equally true that leadership traits that meet the aspirations of the people are not the products of media propaganda by a sycophantic group that wants part of the national pie under the veneer of media consultancy.  The media handlers of the president are doing a great disservice to the nation and the man. You cannot compare a president that gives nods to corruption under whose watch $20 billion of oil money disappeared to world iconic leaders.  Martin Luther King Jnr stood against white American racism and challenged the status quo and died for that goal. His famous speech: ‘I have a Dream‘ is a political gospel about how unity of purpose propelled America into great heights. That you have a black man in the White House today is because of the civil rights efforts of King Jnr.  It is therefore just scandalous to compare our president to such a person. The case of Lee Kuan is even more inspiring. Bubbling with energy and uncommon drive marked with sacrifice and nationalist stripe, Lee Kuan mobilized his country  men and women and transformed his nation from a third world one to a first world. That is why Singapore is among the world best rated economy with the people enjoying high standard of living. As for Nelson Mandela, it will be a bore to repeat his towering achievements in South Africa. His 27 years in jail, his one term in office and the respect the whole world accorded him during his funeral are the lasting testimonies to his unique style of leadership. This is the icon the pretenders of Protectors of Nigerian Posterity are comparing our president!

The election of President Barrack Obama is like breaking the glass ceiling of American politics. A first term senator became a president because of his grey matters, his unique message and love for his nation. His fight against terrorism that led to the death of Osama Bin Laden and his health care programme are his commitments to improve the lives of the Americans. No amount of political propaganda can place Jonathan in the league of these world leaders. Those behind the political adverts know that they are swimming against the current of events and more interested in the size of their bank accounts.
