  • APC to Ikpeazu: identify your projects with posters

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State has told Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to paste his posters only on projects executed by his administration.

Ikpeazu had urged anyone contesting for any position, especially governorship, to identify projects executed by him/her by pasting posters on such projects.

The APC, which toured some projects executed by the Ikpeazu-led government, was apparently irked by what it met on ground. It thus told Ikpeazu to fulfill his promise by directing his supporters to paste his posters on projects his government executed.

The Publicity Secretary, Comrade Benedict Godson, who addressed reporters in Umuahia, noted that the government has resorted to media hype of incomplete, abandoned and substandard projects.

According to Godson, the party was baffled with the fact that most of the projects were only done and completed on radio, even as he wondered why the Ikpeazu-led government has embraced deceit rather than deliver dividends of democracy to the people.

The spokesman said most of the projects the government is claiming to have attracted or executed were awarded by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). He said it was laughable that someone who has nothing to offer the people would make boastful claims that will ridicule his government.

Godson said the APC will the narrative of PDP’s misgovernance in the state, and enjoined Abians to voted out all the PDP candidates in February and March.

  • Elections and the graffiti of posters

Sir: Politics accounts for the high number of campaign posters, paintings and sign boards within the environment especially during electioneering periods. No political party will want to be left out in the contest. Everyone is trying to prove a point ahead of the general elections come next year. Printing presses are springing up due to the high demand of politicians and their respective parties. They spend huge sum of money on posters and sign boards to be able to present something that can be appreciable by the public. Posters are used to showcase candidates or to promote an individual or party.

The question on people’s mind is how safe and hygienic are these political posters and sign boards to the environment and its inhabitants. Almost all the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are loaded with campaign posters. For instance, walls of public buildings are covered with posters and one may ask when walls of schools, electric poles, street and traffic light become places for placing posters for campaign.

Mounting huge posters and bill boards in major roads especially round about pose a serious danger to commuters using the road. Roundabout take up to four major route where vehicles meet and take the appropriate way to their destinations. What I want point out here is; when roads are covered with huge posters and signboards, they become a source of distraction to the road users as their attention may be diverted while driving in such a busy road. Accidents could occur because some of the posters obstruct drivers’ views.

The issues arising with these campaign posters and sign boards are enormous because those responsible do it without putting into consideration the need to keep the environment clean and safe. We have beautiful cities with good architectural designs but in times of election campaigns, the cities are often deformed with posters. From doors of people, electricity poles, traffic lights, trees and every space available are taken up in a graffiti of posters.

Worse still, these posters are not removed after the campaigns are over thus living towns and cities bearing what becomes the ugly mark of politics. It is our environment that suffers in the long run. It is hoped that laws can be made to curb the indiscriminate use of posters and boards during elections.

PDP cautions on Ugwuanyi’s 2019 posters

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State has cautioned those pasting posters for Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuayi’s re-election in 2019 to direct their energy towards mobilisation.
The Chairman, Augustine Nnamani, in a statement, said: “The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Enugu State Chapter, has been drawn to the solidarity posters in Enugu metropolis from a group known as “Mbakwe Gburugburu for Continuity 2019”.
“The said posters, which have the photograph of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, also displayed the logo of the PDP, with inscriptions, such as “No Vacancy in 2019”.
“The party appreciates the goodwill and solidarity of the group, and other related associations, but wishes to state that what is ultimate in its agenda at the moment is total mobilisation of eligible voters to register with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the general elections.
“The party, therefore, appeals to the groups to channel their efforts towards the Voters Registration which would ensure the actualisation of our ultimate goal in 2019.”

Obaseki accuses PDP of destroying his posters, bill boards

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Godwin Obaseki, has accused supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of destroying his bill boards and posters.

Obaseki, who spoke through the Director-General of his campaign organization, Osarodion Ogie, said the APC has uncovered plots by the PDP to mobilise thugs to start destroying the posters and bill boards under the guise of protesting local government workers.

Ogie warned that any attempt to destroy the APC campaign posters would be resisted.

He said genuine pensioners were receiving their pensions regularly, while aggrieved local government workers know where to go and what to do.

He added; “Last Saturday, we woke up and found out that our posters and bill boards around Sapele Road and Ikpoba Hill were destroyed by PDP supporters.

“Apart from that we have it on good authority that they have recruited some hoodlums under the guise that they are local government workers who are protesting for their pensions and gratuities.

“The idea is for them to go out and destroy our posters under the guise of protest. This is a workers’ friendly government; this is the only state that raised its minimum wage from N18,000 to N25,000.

“This is not about politics; it is real. So, we are using this opportunity to alert security agents to watch out for these people, because we are ready for a peaceful election. They intend to coerce us into violence, but we will not. Edo will be calm for this election because we have no opposition.

“PDP leaders should be warned; they must stop destroying our posters for the interest of peace. They should know that nobody has monopoly of violence, but we will continue to remain calm because victory is sure.”

  • FCT frowns at indiscriminate posters’ pasting

Henceforth, anyone or organisation found pasting posters indiscriminately will be prosecuted, the Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) has said.

This warning was issued by the Director of the FCTA’s Department of Outdoor Advertisement and Signage (DOAS), Mallam Ibrahim Yusuf at the commissioning of GEMSROCK, a new ultramodern electronic billboard in Abuja’s Wuse 2 district.

Yusuf said his department has already taken measures to control the rash of posters and billboards in the city, saying they had approached religious organizations, political parties and businesses to bring the situation under control.

“There is no way you can solve this problem without going to the source. So we have visited churches and other religious organisations as well as business owners to talk to their members about pasting posters in Abuja,” he said.

The director said for now they are giving a period of grace after which they will take drastic measures to curtail the trend.

“If they continue we will soon start to prosecute them,” he said.

Instead of defacing the city with posters, Mal. Yusuf urged members of the public to engage the services of the many electronic billboards to showcase their products and services.

While commissioning the installation, the director commended the management of GEMS Communications LTD for installing the ultramodern digital billboard, saying it is at par with what is obtainable in some of the world’s foremost capitals.

Speaking earlier, the Managing Director of GEMS Communications, Mr. Atilola Odudare said the company invested so much to install the electronic billboard in an attempt to “redefine outdoor by blending emerging technology with the art which is environmentally friendly and enhances the looks of Abuja.”

He said the electronic billboard built in the shape of a rock and located in the Wuse 2 business hub is designed to complement both the business and aesthetic angles of the capital and called on businesses to take advantage of this by having their products advertised on it.

According to him, “the billboard is proposed to be the first user friendly billboard in Nigeria and will be interactive with the immediate environment.  It is the first if its kind in out-of-the-box outdoor advertising.”

Odudare added that, “the product gives users of outdoor exposure to ‘budget as it is programmed’ to deliver time sharing with all accompanying flexibility. It is also web-based product and eliminates the rigors of physical visit to the site by the client; they can view the exposure delivery of the products on their palms.”

Suspected thugs destroy Umeh’s billboards, posters

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, has alleged that suspected hoodlums have destroyed his billboards and posters in Anambra Central.

He is the party’s candidate for Anambra Central senatorial zone.

When The Nation went round the zone at the weekend, Umeh’s 27 billboards had been destroyed. His posters were either torn or defaced at Agukwu Nri, Amawbia, Agulu, Adazi ani, Nkpor and Borromeo roundabout.

Umeh’s campaign Director- General, Obele Chuka Obele, said what happened was a bad precedent in Anambra politics.

The APGA senatorial candidate at the weekend visited the monarch of Obosi in Idemili North Local Government, Igwe Chidubem Iweka, who assured him of his subjects’ support.

Umeh said he was not in the race for selfish reasons, but to give the people the dividends of democracy.

  • ‘Leave my posters alone’

    ‘Leave my posters alone’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate in Ogun Central, Dr. Bisola Sodipo-Clark, has called on her opponents to desist from flushing, defacing or tampering with her campaign posters.

She said it might be due to her growing popularity and acceptance among the electorate that has forced her main challenger to commission thugs to deface or tear down her posters.

In a statement in Abeokuta, the Director of her campaign organisation, Segun Sowunmi, said: “Political thugs have been sighted at many locations tearing off our posters. This is unbecoming of persons I hitherto thought were above board. This is in bad taste, callous and reprehensible. Politics should not be a do or die affair.

“Politics should be for sharing of ideas on how to improve the lives of our people. If these people put any value on anything at all, they should realise that the posters were printed with money, therefore has value.

“Ours is a ‘live and let live’ environment. We understand that our opponents are from the party governing the state, but they must allow all Ogun residents the right to free and fair electioneering including the liberty to campaign with publicity materials. If they are jittery over posters what will they do when we flag off our mass rallies?”

2015 elections: Lamido-Amaechi presidential posters flood Minna

Promoters of the Alhaji Sule Lamido and Rotimi Amaechi presidential ticket in 2015 has taken their campaign to Minna, the Niger State capital, where the streets are flooded with the duo’s posters.

Lamido and Amaechi are incumbent governors of Jigawa and Rivers states. They have denied any plan to run.

Residents of the town woke up to find in strategic places the A2 size intimidating posters.

The posters appealed for Nigerians’ support for the Lamido/Amaechi ticket.

The posters, which have the logo of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also carries the photographs of Lamido and Amaechi.

It reads: ‘’Support Alhaji Sule Lamido and Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi for President 2015.’’

Efforts to get the sponsors of the posters were fruitless as nobody in the PDP was ready to own up to pasting them.

When contacted on phone, the state Secretary of the PDP, Malam Aminu Yusuf, claimed that the state branch of the party was ignorant of the poster.

‘’As I am talking to you now, I am in Kontagora attending a zonal meeting of our party. We don’t know anything about any poster. Whose poster are you talking about?’’ he queried.

IN its bid to rid Oyo State of dirt, the state government has warned against indiscriminate pasting of posters within the metropolis.

The Director General of the Oyo State Signage and Advertising Agency (OYSAA), Mr. Yinka Adepoju, stated this yesterday while speaking with journalists during a sanitation exercise at Sango/Iwo-Road area of Ibadan.

He vowed the state will continue to pursue the existing zero tolerance policy on indiscriminate use of posters.

Adepoju emphasised that the warning should serve as a reminder to all religious organisations, companies, schools and other multinational companies to refrain from the indiscriminate use of posters in Oyo State.

He frowned against the non-compliance of the members of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), churches and schools with the policies of Oyo State Signage Agency and Advertisement Agency.
