Naira remains firm against the dollar, pound sterling

The Nigerian currency, the naira, at the weekend, traded on a stable platform against two major international currencies, the dollar and the pound sterling, as transactions ended for the week.

Investigation revealed that the dollar and the pound sterling were sold at N155.72 and N170, respectively, at the official and bureau de change since Jan. 6.

At the black market, the naira was exchanged for the dollar at N170, while the pound sterling went for N270.

A breakdown of weekend’s transactions showed that the naira appreciated marginally by 10k, against the pound, trading at N254.08 from N254.09 at the official market.

The naira, however, remained firm against the pound sterling at both the Bureau de Change and the Black market, as it had sold at N270 since Jan. 6.

At the official market, the Naira lost 28 kobo, trading at N210.48 to the Euro, compared with N210.20 on Jan. 6.

Overall, the naira in the week under review, gained 50k against the Euro, to close at N230.50k, compared with the opening figure of N230 at the bureau de change market on Friday.

  • Mid-day rain pounds Lagos

Rain pounded some parts of Lagos again yesterday, leaving a tale of woes. Some roads were flooded and commuters stranded.

The rain resumed about noon after stopping six hours earlier. It rained all-night in some communities.

Motorists had a hectic time wading through the flood. Some vehicles got stuck. Area boys made brisk business pushing those vehicles. Many commuters were stranded endlessly at bus stops.

Parts of Ogba, Ojodu-Berger, Ikeja, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway and Oshodi were flooded.

It was cloudy in Mushin, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Gbagada and Oworonsoki were cloudy.

Traders hurriedly packed their wares and shut their shops.

A trader, Mrs Basirat Muhammed, who deals in gift items at Agege Market near Isokoko Police Station, said the rain “spoilt business for the day”.

“Since the rain began, I have had to pack my wares and even if the rain stops now, it will be difficult to bring my wares out for display again,” she said.

Mr Emmanuel Akindele, who works in a manufacturing company at Ikeja, said his problem was how to return home, especially the situation he would meet his flood-prone apartment.

Akindele, who lives at Aboru, a Lagos suburb, said the Aboru terrain was water-logged.

  • Osaze’s West Brom mate use pounds as toilet roll

Osaze’s West Brom mate use pounds as toilet roll

IT’S a photo that will enrage hard-working football fans across Britain after Super Eagles ace, Osaze Odemwingie’s West Brom teammate Liam Ridgewell, 28, squats over a toilet and wipes his backside with a wad of £20 notes.

Scattered on the floor in front of him are dozens more £20 notes, totalling almost £1,000.

The Premier League star, who earns at least £20,000 a week, is apparently using the cash instead of toilet roll.

He claims the sick stunt was simply a “joke” to wind up a friend — but it will infuriate more than just his pal.

Ridgewell’s weekly wage is equivalent to the average annual salary in the West Midlands — one of the most deprived areas in the country.

The disgraceful snap — taken in the bathroom of Ridgewell’s £1.5million home in Barnt Green, Birmingham — was sent to The Sun by a West Brom fan who asked not to be named.

He said: “The people of West Bromwich earn a fraction of what this idiot earns yet he makes a mockery of his good fortune like this. It makes me sick.

“We’ve always thought footballers were arrogant, overpaid buffoons and this just proves it.”

Ridgewell, an unused sub in his side’s 1-0 defeat to Stoke Saturday, apologised Saturday night.

He said: “The photo was taken in the privacy of my home around eight months ago as a joke to wind up a mate, who I had just won a personal bet with.

“I only intended him to see the photo but now it’s public, I can understand how it will be viewed. I am sorry for any offence it causes.”

A spokesman for West Brom, currently fifth in the Premier League, said: “This is a private issue for Liam that has become public.

“It does not put the club in a good light and we will deal with the matter internally. Since Liam joined us 11 months ago, his conduct on club duty has been exemplary.”

West Brom fans at Saturday’s home game at The Hawthorns were shown the picture — and most reacted with disbelief.
