‘Manufacturers spend N500b yearly on power’

Manufacturers spend about N500billion yearly for maintaining their power plants, the Chairman, Economic Policy Committee (EPC), Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Reginald Ike Odiah, has said.

He lamented that irregular electricity supply was taking a huge toll on manufacturers despite the handover of the 18 successor companies of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) to new core investors under the privatisation about two years ago.

Oduah told The Nation  on  the sideline of the Annual General Meeting of the MAN, in Ikeja that a situation where manufacturers spend a whopping N500billion yearly for fuelling, running and maintaining their power plants, along with other additional costs of providing infrastructural deficiencies,  was not good for business.

Odiah, who is also the Managing Director/CEO, Bennett Industries Limited, said the huge cost of providing alternative electricity is largely responsible for the high production cost for local manufacturing. “Manufacturing cost in Nigeria is twice that of Ghana, four times that of South Africa and Europe, and nine times that of China and Malaysia,” the industrialist said.

The EPC Chairman added that other consequences of high production cost include low Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contribution by the real sector, especially manufacturing to the economy, lack of interest in investing in Nigeria by both local and foreign investors, closure of factories and migration of surviving ones to greener pastures, and others.

Odiah, who spoke on ‘Serious constraints to sustainability of the real sector (from a manufacturer’s perspective)’ said, for instance, Nigeria’s real sector contribution to GDP currently stands at 9.5 per cent, while those of U.S and China stand at 35.6 per cent and 49.5 per cent, respectively.

Continuing, he said Japan, India and Germany boast 38.2 per cent, 38.4 per cent and 35.9 per cent real sector contribution to GDP, respectively. He added that the sector’s low GDP contribution to the local economy caused by lack of basic infrastructure especially electricity is also responsible for the huge losses in tax revenue for the government as well as the high unemployment rate.

He said the nation’s rising unemployment problem was responsible for the prevailing high crime rate and other  vices in the country. These issues arise because of “abject neglect, and lack of attention to the development of our basic infrastructure-roads, railways, electricity supply which has resulted in great difficulties in doing business in Nigeria.”

  • The amazing power of a Spirit-filled girl (IX)

At such a young age, she has not only learnt to build her home on earth, she already has a mansion in heaven.

Are you filled with the spirit of God or you are just an ugly shadow of yourself and the devil’s playground?

Get your soul ignited today and begin to experience your original.

(Excerpt of a poem-”The Amazing Power of A Spirit-Filled Girl)

    DEAR TEMILOLU,

Your column in The Nation on Sunday is always a blessing, may your fountain of knowledge never run dry.

    Dear Aunty Temilolu,

I have been following your articles on “The amazing power of a Spirit-filled girl” and it has been such a blessing to me. I have always wanted to be a spiritual person to surmount the challenges I’ve encountered all my life and I thank God for using you to inspire me and give me the much needed encouragement and leverage. Thanks for being there.

    Esther, Kaduna

    Dear Aunty Temilolu,

I just read your article for the first time and it really helped me. Thank you. Please never stop writing.

My darling sisters and every wonderful fan of this page-God’s page,

I welcome you all to the last month of year 2015; the month that will put an end to your struggles, troubles, fears and anxieties. May God in His infinite mercies change your garment and give you a garment of glory, everlasting joy, praise and thanksgiving even before the very last day of this year in Jesus name.

I ended last week’s article inquiring from you about your usefulness to the kingdom of God. What does God mean to you? Or perhaps who is God to you? Do you see Him as a Father who is meant to be used at will even when you misbehave or you see Him as a Father whom you are committed to more than anything or anyone else in the world and whose kingdom you must propagate? Unfortunately, too many Christians who say they are born again appear to be too busy to propagate the kingdom of God and win souls. Everyone wants to go to heaven some day but they forget they’ll be asked to give an account of what they did on earth to promote the kingdom of God amongst other things. If you truly love God with all your heart, whether He has granted you your requests or not, you’d love to talk about Him in the public bus, in your school and almost anywhere you find yourself. You’d love to rush to church and sweep the floor or clean the chairs before someone else does it. You’d love to carry the things of God on your head and act like it’s your no.1 priority in life. By so doing, you are gathering stars for your destiny, promoting your life – no matter how bad things are for you currently and also building yourself a mansion – a house of glory in heaven. At the same time, you are building a wonderful future for yourself here on earth. There are so many challenges you can never imagine you are bull-dozing by those acts. Even if your life is so down-trodden at the moment and relatives have given up on you – it only takes one move of God for your destiny to be catapulted to where those you always wanted to be like can never even get to. Is He not God?

“And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.” Daniel 12:3

Check out the above scripture – what a good God!

    THE SCRIPTURES ALSO SAY:

“But, as it is written,”What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.  And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.[a]

“The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.  The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one.” 1 Corinthians 2:9-15

What the above scripture implies is that spiritual things must be spiritually discerned including your destiny and entire journey through life. If we do not possess the spirit of God which enables us understand the things given freely to us by God, we cannot possibly possess them neither can we live the glorious and very unique life God has destined for each one of us. You really need to ask yourself this question – Am I my original as created by God or just an ugly shadow of myself and the devil’s playground?

It is my prayer that the mighty power of God rests upon your life and ignites your spirits in Jesus mighty name. AMEN!

  • Ibom Power set for better days, says MD

The Managing Director of Ibom Power Company (IPC), Dr. Victor Udo, has said better days lie ahead for the company.

He added that Governor Udom Emmanuel’s blueprint would revolutionise Akwa Ibom State power sector.

Dr. Udo spoke with reporters in his office. He commended the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for issuing Ibom power plant a licence expansion from 190MW to 685MW.

He said Emmanuel received the licence expansion from NERC on behalf IPC management to kick start the Phase 2 of Ibom power plant. He stated that the Governorhas given the management of IPC the needed support to reposition the company to supply power for the expected industrialisation of the state.

Speaking on the three-pronged activitiesimplemented in the company as directed by the Governor, the MD said: “His Excellency asked me to stabilise the plant operations, build capacity and instill good corporate governance. We have done this in the last one year while summarily making the State a power exporting hub in the federation”.

On the plant stabilisation, he stated that: “Unit 3 which is the biggest in the fleet of three, recently marked 114 days without forced outage. Unit 2 completion and commissioning is expected before 2016. We are proud of these accomplishments”.

He went on: “In the area of capacity building, the company has established a pool of interns and apprentices. A succession plan for all categories of staff is also in place. Therefore, the company is capable of exporting expertise without avoid should other power generation companies across the globe decide to recruit any of our staff.”

Speaking on good corporate governance, the Ibom power boss said his experience from corporate America where he practiced for over 20 years and Emmanuel’s vast background in corporate governance has transformed IPC intoan economic asset.

“We have developed a business plan that employees understand. Our goal is for Ibom Power to be a model for moving AkwaIbom State from civil service and government dependency into Corporate AkwaIbom; a private sector driven society,” he stated.

Addressing the issue of gas supply for the expansion of the plant’s capacity (Phase 2), the MD said: “Ibom power plant will not have gas supply challenges since there is a gas infrastructure with sufficient quantity for both Phase 1 & 2 and other power plants within the region”.

He reiterated the Governor’s appealto the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, to improve its network and refund the sum of $22million Ibom Power spent on the transmission line connecting Ibom power to the rest of the national grid.

The MD also called on Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) to improve on technical and commercial operations to ensure that the impact of Government investments across the power value chain is felt by AkwaIbom people through the provision of steady power supply.

He called on the good people of Akwa Ibom State to continue to support Emmanuel’s vision for the industrialisation of the State and making the State a power exporting hub in the federation.

  • U.S. to assist Nigeria in power sector – Envoy

U.S. to assist Nigeria in power sector – Envoy

Mr James Entwistle, the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria says his country will assist Nigeria to increase its power generation.

Entwistle spoke on Tuesday in Abuja when he visited the Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonannya Onu, in his office.

He said that the U.S. would assist the country through “Power Africa Programme“ to increase power generation, distribution and transmission.

“We are looking for stronger role by private sector in the power industries to support Nigeria for better generation, transmission and distribution.

“We will encourage large private power companies to come and invest in Nigeria because we see the private sector as a solution to many of the energy challenges in Africa,’’ he said.

The ambassador said that the U.S. was also set to collaborate with the ministry to assist in other areas to promote science, technology and innovation toward national development.

Onu expressed gratitude to the envoy for the visit and assured him of his ministry’s readiness to partner with the U.S. government.

“USA is a largest economy in the world which is driven by pronounced innovation.

“We want partnership that will advance the science sector to diversify the economy,“ he said.

  • Ghana launches power ship to boost electricity

Ghana launches power ship to boost electricity

Ghana has taken delivery of a power generating ship which would boost power supply- bringing an end to the chronic blackouts the nation had been thrown into.

Ghana’s Power Minister, Kwabena Donkor, stated this amid anger over the blackouts, which can last for 24 hours at a time, a development that threatens President John Mahama’s chances of re-election next year.

The government contracted the ship from independent Turkish producer, Karpowership, to generate 235 megawatts of electricity daily to help offset a national supply deficit of around 500 megawatts.

“This is only one element in our solution, but it is a very useful element,” Donkor told newsmen in the port of Tema, east of the capital Accra.

“It is a strong signal that we are on course to ending the blackouts and to restoring investors’ confidence in our economy.”

Traditional chiefs welcomed the ship on Sunday by pouring alcoholic spirits onto the ground.

The power blackouts, which have been going on for three years, stem from insufficient rain to operate hydro facilities, obsolete equipment, inefficiency and a long-term failure to add capacity to the grid.

Irregular power has compounded a slowdown in economic growth in a country that, until recently, was investors’ favourite.

Ghana’s economy grew strongly for years through its exports of gold, cocoa and oil, but lower global commodity prices have blunted that expansion and the government began an International Monetary Fund (IMF) aid programme in April.

The generating ship, Aysegul Sultan, should be plugged into the national grid by mid-December and is the first of two plants that will provide a total of 450 megawatts of power under a 10-year contract, Donkor said.

Donkor said an additional supply of up to 250 megawatts was coming next month from the Dubai-based independent producer, Africa, and Middle East Resource Investment.

He added that other projects would deliver about 1,000 megawatts in 2016- that would give Ghana a power-reserve.

The amazing power of a Spirit-filled girl (VIII)

She has seen God’s most wondrous plans for her and she rejoices in it because they just must manifest.

Not only is she a mighty weapon in the hands of God as she is a terror to the kingdom of darkness, she is an invaluable asset to her entire generation and the world at large as her light ignites the stars of others.

(Excerpt of a poem-“The Amazing Power of A Spirit-Filled Girl)

My darling sisters and every wonderful fan of this page-God’s page,

I bring warm greetings to you from the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the ancient of days, the lion of the tribe of Judah and the one who has the final say over your life. He says to tell you

“For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts. And this is but a light thing in the sight of Lord:”

    2 Kings 3:17-18 KJV

That which you have been pining for over the years, I mean your greatest wishes which would give your life a good meaning is hovering over your head, about to land on your laps when you least expect before the end of this very year! Cheer up, be thankful and highly expectant. Congratulations for your restoration and victory at last! I welcome you all to school on Sunday.

As I mentioned last week, without the power of the Holy Spirit it is impossible to see God’s original and wondrous plans for our destiny. What a lot of people see is counterfeit because their souls are polluted by the devil. And you know what? A polluted heart is the devil’s playground while a pure heart is God’s power house. Certainly, there must be a captain steering the ship of your life. You can’t have two masters; it’s either God or the devil who is so damn smart and who knows how to mess around with willing souls. He knows how to confuse great destinies and ruin them by employing raging, mad spirits to infest their lives. These mad spirits are wicked, violent spirits who whisper into souls. These wild spirits are manipulative, they simply remote-control one’s life if they are given just a little space. They are dangerous and destructive and could hang on with one for life. They are behind terrible dream attacks and they are the master planter of evil seeds in dreams. They represent, among other things, wild animals and soldiers who pursue you in your dreams, they are the ones who feed you and contaminate your life, afflicting you with strange illnesses, they are the ones who press down your head etc.

You should know by now that dreams are a blue print of what happens in the physical. They represent our lives in the spiritual realm such that some of these dream attacks are programmed to take effect much later in life while others manifest immediately. These evil seeds are so powerful that they can turn one’s beautiful life upside down within a split second and turn one’s life into a nightmare. Unfortunately, a lot of people are too powerless to fight them immediately with the sword of the spirit – the word of God because they are bereft of it. By the time they rush to their pastors, the deed has been done and the trouble is already established. Why do we have to get ourselves into terrible trouble when we have a free, selfless helper-the Holy Spirit? Psychedelic Christianity cannot get you anywhere in this day and age; you need the raw power of God to achieve everything you want in life.

My friend, it is not enough that you have accepted Jesus Christ as your personal lord and saviour. You not only need a baptism of the Holy Spirit, you need a personal encounter, otherwise I’m afraid you are just wasting your time. You need to be on fire; the devil must recognize you as a trouble-maker and be wary of you. The heavens must recognise your voice as soon as you say …in the name of Jesus. The angels of God must love to be around you 24/7.You need to possess the raw power of God and it must show in your life style. How useful are you for God? A lot of people say they’ve been praying, praying, praying and praying on the same issue but God has refused to answer them. Though, God’s time is the best, are they invaluable and precious in God’s sight and too dear to God to be ignored? Are they too precious to God to be wasted by the enemy? Look, God needs you in His army. He needs you to help rescue lost souls. He needs you to deliver His people and save them from ruin just like He used Esther. Every single Christian ought to be a soldier of Christ. When your mates are talking about sex, cheating, lying, stealing and doing things which are an abomination to God, do you just watch and keep quiet or you correct them not caring whose ox is gored? Perhaps, you are too scared of what will be done to you if you talk. You know the truth and it has set you free and given you the best life ever, are you encouraging others to discover and experience the truth? May you not live a wasted life in Jesus name!

  • The amazing power of a Spirit-filled girl (VII)

The amazing power of a Spirit-filled girl (VII)

She’s more intelligent than her teachers and is wiser than her ancestors. She never experiences heart-breaks because she is already programmed to wait for God’s choice. She has dominion over her destiny because she has subdued her flesh. She never suffers the pain of disappointment of any form because she knows that “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things that God hath prepared for them that love him.”

(Excerpt of a poem-“The Amazing Power of A Spirit-Filled Girl)

My darling sisters and every wonderful fan of this page-God’s page,

I am most delighted to be with you again today, believing sincerely with all my heart that some girl’s life somewhere is finally aligning with God’s divine agenda after reading this series in the last few weeks. I welcome you to school on Sunday!

Last week, I told you that with a massive dose of the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life, you would amongst other things through divine revelation know your examination questions even before they are set and this super power comes from constantly rubbing minds with God by reading the holy bible and living a holy life. No wonder David said

“I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.”

    Psalm 119:99-100

The point is if you are committed to God, He is committed to you, though that doesn’t mean you won’t go through trials. And in any case because you are carrying His presence, more often than not, He would inform you before those trials  begin and  not only tell you how to wade your way through the stormy sea, He would give you power to deal with it all so eventually nothing really takes you by surprise and you are fully armed. I tell you no matter how rough or painful it may be, there will always be one word He has spoken or a revelation He had shown you earlier which would soothe your soul and strengthen you till the end of that precarious situation. Sometimes you see people coming out better even after being badly bruised and battered by life and you begin to wonder how they dealt with the situation- it’s the power of the Holy Spirit.

A lot of our parents, ignorant of this power, took wrong steps early in life which is affecting a lot of youth today and these steps have derailed too many destinies such that it would only take the mighty power of God to move in the life of the average youth and align him to God’s agenda.

“With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding. With Him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.” Job 12:12-13

While coasting through life, we encounter all sorts at every stage. And if you are a child of destiny; a child destined to do exploits and be very great, your life would certainly be under attack by the enemy. It is normal to seek the counsel of people who have been in this world long before us and experienced similar situations. Truly, they may have answers and the wisdom to counsel, however, do they understand the language of your star as God? Do they know why you are passing through that fire? Do they know the actual path God has designed for your destiny to pass through? I doubt. If care is not taken one could be pushed out of the path of one’s destiny. But with the Holy Spirit, you can never miss it. You have the torch light your life needs and no amount of darkness can dim that light and stop it from illuminating your path except you allow it.

So many girls are so in love with their boyfriends that they simply act as though they are in the world just to have a guy drooling over them. And when they get their hearts broken, they almost want to commit suicide. Over what? Today’s girls are so badly distracted; even when they can’t speak good English least of all write a good sentence in English and pass their exams, their boyfriends appear to be their priority. These boyfriends eventually steal what should make them great in life. They steal their precious time and energy which should be spent on studying their books, the word of God, laying a proper spiritual foundation for their future. They steal their virginity, pollute their lives, desecrate them and make them unfit for God’s purpose. It is normal for every girl to desire to be loved. However, there’s time for everything. With the power of the Holy Spirit, you are not interested in whatever is not recommended in the bible. You don’t get heart-broken over a guy. You are led by the spirit of God in everything you do. Or have you ever come across boyfriend in the bible? With the presence of the Holy Spirit, your flesh is subdued and under control. Fleshly lust is a spirit and holiness is a spirit as well. Your holiness and the fire of God burning in you suffocate lust of the flesh. It’s easier for you to resist the devil and his wiles, all you concentrate on is your future and how to amass all what God has planned for you which He constantly shows you. Now, without the Holy Spirit and in a highly competitive and evil world as this, how can you even discern and fight for that which belongs to you?

  • Fed Govt to explore mixed energy sources for power

Fed Govt to explore mixed energy sources for power

The Federal Government is considering a mix of energy sources for electricity supply.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo stated this yesterday while receiving a delegation of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) led by its Director-General, Dr. Erepamo Osaisai, at the Presidential Villa,  Abuja.

Besides working to improve power generation from the national grid, renewable energy is being pursued, he said.

The Vice President said: ‘’The long and short of it is that we definitely need a mix of energy choices because in the next decade such a mix will be imperative.’’

The solar option, he said, is also being considered by the Federal Government.

Dr. Osaisai was in the State House to present a report on the Implementation of Nuclear Power Programme for Nigeria, conducted in partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Director, Nuclear Power at IAEA, Dr. Dohee Hann, told the Vice President that Nigeria as Africa’s leading economy, needs to consider nuclear energy for electricity in order to address the power deficit.

He said the presentation of the report to the Vice President was an important stage in the process, emphasising that the report had articulated how the nation can meet the infrastructural need for nuclear power programme for the country.

Dr Osaisai said Nigeria plans to make each of its nuclear power plants to generate power in excess of 1,200megawatts (Mw),

adding that IAEA conducted an integrated nuclear infrastructure review mission in the country in June and that the nation’s nuclear power energy programme was on course to diversify power sources beyond gas and hydro bases.

“Our nuclear power plants are huge machines. And what we are planning is, each of the power plants will be generating power in excess of 1,200 Mw.

“Nigeria is signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. We are a member of the IAEA and our responsibility as a country is to utilise nuclear power in the safest way possible.

“And what Nigeria is doing, as we can tell, is diversifying our energy generation base beyond gas and hydro to include other sources for which nuclear is also being considered.’’

The chairman said the United Nations (UN) nuclear watchdog made recommendations that could help Nigeria develop its nuclear power projects.

“They (IAEA officials) have made a final report in which there are specific recommendations, suggestions and also identifying good practices in the implementation of our own nuclear power programme in the country.

“That is the report they (we) came to submit to Mr Vice President.

“It’s quite a serious task and responsibility for a country to implement a nuclear power programme and what we do at the NAEC is to take leadership in building the pertinent nuclear power infrastructure.’’

According to Osaisai, NAEC has a nuclear power road map “which is being approved by government and that is what we are implementing’’.

He said in the implementation of the road map, the organisation needed to build critical nuclear power infrastructure and enter into partnerships with international agencies and other technical partners.

“The mission of the agency in June was to assess our level of preparedness and readiness in the building of this national nuclear power infrastructure.

“And we’ve done quite well. I think there are specific recommendations that would also strengthen our own effort in the country.’’

On the commission’s facility in Ile-Ife, the chairman  said it was a “tandem accelerator“ for practical physics, which could be used to implement a number of things including environmental studies.

“That is not directly in the power area, but it is a machine or equipment that will be useful for nuclear education, training, and research as well as for development in the country. We are putting it to good use; it is working fine; we have been able to conduct a number of studies.”

Also, the Federal Government is urgently striving to bring succor to the people of the Northeast whose lives have been affected by the insurgency.

The Vice President while receiving the new World Bank Country Director to Nigeria, Mr. Rachid Benmessaoud, said: “There is the need for immediate action within a short time. We need to deal with the planning and implementation of the projects that will bring succor to the people of the Northeast.”

The World Bank is providing assistance to the Federal Government for the rebuilding of the Northeast.

The new Country Director pledged the bank’s continued support to the government, while also expressing hope to work with the new Federal Executive Council in other areas including economic diversification.

General T. Y. Danjuma, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee in the Northeast initiative (PCNI) attended the meeting alongside the Finance Minister, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun and the Budget and Planning Minister, Mr. Udoma Udo Udoma.

  • Power dips by 480MW as vandals hit Onitsha tower

Power dips by 480MW as vandals hit Onitsha tower

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said that tower no 62, along the Okpai-Onitsha 330kV double circuit transmission line, evacuating power from the Okpai Power Station in Delta State, has been vandalized.

The incident which took place at Asaba Uchi, Ndokwa East Local Government, has resulted in the reduction of available power to the national grid by about 480MW.

According to the release, “at about 4:51 am on Tuesday, 10th November, 2015, the Okpai – Onitsha 330kV transmission line tripped and the cause of the tripping was traced to tower No 62, which had been vandalized. Two of the four legs of the transmission tower were cut by vandals, causing the tower to hang precariously. This poses a major threat to transmission grid integrity as a total collapse of this tower could bring down several other towers along the transmission line route.”

TCN management and its quick response engineering crew inspected the site of the incident, located in the swampy forest of Asaba Uchi, the same day, and have already mobilized a reputable engineering contracting firm to anchor the transmission tower temporarily, to avoid total collapse.

Anchoring the vandalized tower will enable TCN energize one of the circuits on the tower, to enable it recommence partial power evacuation from the Okapi Power Station to the national grid. This is expected to be achieved within a fortnight.

The statement further noted that TCN will construct a new tower to replace the vandalized tower no 62, but that due to the swampy nature of the site, construction can only commence in the dry season when vehicular access is possible.

TCN reassures that it would continue to work towards a robust transmission grid, and pleads with all, especially its host communities, to work with the Company in its fight against the nefarious activities of vandals.

The construction of a new tower it noted will cost the company millions of naira which would have been applied to its grid expansion plans.
