    Anichebe gets praise from teammate

    England defender Leighton Baines has showered praises on his teammate Victor Anichebe for his inspiring performance this sesaon.

    According to Baines, the presence of the Nigerian striker in the Everton team strikes fears into opposition defenders.

    Anichebe has been a key performer for the Blues this season, scoring seven goals and offering a series of muscular performances after shaking off a catalogue of injury problems.

    Baines believes the 24-year-old forward is now beginning to successfully harness his physical prowess and technical qualities.

    The England defender told evertontv: -We have known it for a while and believed in him for a while and he is starting to believe it himself.

    “We are starting to see the rewards from that self-belief that he has gained.

    “He has been an important player for us this season. He has come up with some important goals and beyond that he has given us something, with his strength that we can play up to. Defenders are starting to fear him as well so he is a big asset to us,”Baines stated.

    Anichebe has not been available for selection in the national team as the striker has publicly stated that his club career comes before national team engagements.

  • Trainees praise Agric minister

    The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has been described as the “best Agriculture Minister ever”.

    Participants reached this conclusion at the end of their four-week training organised by the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, Ibadan, Oyo State.

    Over 250 entrepreneurs participated in the programme on fisheries and poultry. The curriculum included production, marketing, processing, agribusiness and how to access finance.

    Each graduate in the fisheries programme got 400 free fingerlings and feeds.

    One hundred and forty people graduated in the poultry course. Each received free 100 day-old chicks and feeds for three months.

    A participant, Owolabi Idris, said: “Only God can reward him. I thought it was a joke until I got here. The minister has taught me how to fish and has given me fingerlings too. He is the best in the history of Nigeria.”

    Madam Mojisola Ariyo said: “ I came here for the four-week training. They accommodated us; gave me 100 chicks, three months feed and N5, 000 to transport them home. It is as if I am still dreaming.”

    Rashidi Odunaiya pleaded with the government to continue the programme.

    “I want government to continue. A lot of people here are enterprenuers and retirees. The government should continue and find a way of encouraging the youths to show more interest,” he said.

  • LP, ACN, PDP candidates praise voters over conduct

    THE candidates of the three major political parties contesting in the Ondo State governorship election yesterday lauded the electorate in the state for their massive turnout and orderly conduct.

    Gov. Olusegun Mimiko, who voted at about 2:18 p.m at his Ward 7 Unit 20 Polling Unit in Ondo, told newsmen after casting his vote that the turnout for the election was “ decent and unprecedented.’’

    He also said the accreditation of voters across the state was fairly carried out, adding that he would give his final verdict after the election.

    The ACN candidate, Chief Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), also cast his vote at 12:50 pm at his Oke-Ijebu Polling Unit in Owo.

    Akeredolu, who spoke to journalists after casting his vote, said that he was impressed with the turnout and conduct of voters.

    Also, Akeredolu’s wife, Betty, told journalists that she was impressed with the turnout.

    The PDP candidate, Chief Olusola Oke, who cast his vote at 2:25 pm, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the accreditation process was slow.

    Oke, who voted at his Ward 3 Unit 5 Olori/Otunmara in Ilaje Local Government Area, said it took INEC officials an average of 30 minutes to accredit one voter.

    He also said the security arrangement in the riverside communities was not up to the desired expectation while INEC officials were absent in some polling units in the area.

    The PDP flag bearer, however, commended the electorate for their patience and orderly conduct.

    The Cherubim and Seraphim Unification of Nigeria, Olorunsogo Parish, Ese-Ofin, Lagos held its Adult Harvest and Thanksgiving Service penultimate Sunday.

    For the people of Ese-Ofin Village in Lagos, it was jubilation. It didn’t seem like every other day because what has been a serene environment was thrown into singing and dancing.

    It is the hometown of the Lagos State Commissioner for Rural Development, Hon Cornelius Ojelabi, and host of the Cherubim and Seraphim, Olorunshogo Parish which held its Adult Harvest in grand style. It was themed Harvest of Dominion 2012.

    Though a small community, it was a crowd puller on Sunday, October 7.

    That Sunday, it rolled out the drums in celebration, leaving no stone unturned to make the ceremony an elaborate one.

    The boat riders, tricycle and motorcycle operators, popularly known as okada riders had a field day making more money than usual, conveying guests to and fro the church. Guests parked their posh cars and crossed the water to the village, which was a beehive of activities.

    The elderly ones and children stood by the road side and watched as well dressed guests made their way to the church. They lined the road greeting passers-by. Some simply stood and watched in awe. Others whispered that they had not seen such an an array of guests trouping into the towne.

    The drumming and music from the small church echoed through the town. The community bubbled.

    As is the tradition of the C and S, they were dressed in their white robes. The women sang, the men danced. Even the elderly ones couldn’t resist the music, despite their ages. They bent to dance. The women wriggled their waists. It was an exciting harvest and their laughter depicted their joy. They had a swell time; the even sang some Igbo worship songs.

    Ojelabi brought his friends and professional colleagues to make the occasion worth-while. He wasn’t left out as he was dressed in his white robe, too.

    Those in attendance were royal fathers: Olumegbon of Lagos Chief Fatai Lawal; the Ovori of Ibeshe Kingdom, Oba Gausu Rasaki, and the Asiwaju of Festac, High Chief Kole Oboh.

    Others were former member, Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Sodiq Abayomi; Chairman, Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area, Hon Kayode Robert, and the Women leader, Alhaja Amota Sanni; a Director of Finance and Administration in the Lagos State Ministry, Mrs Elizabeth Ashiru; Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Rural Matters, Mr Babatunde Humpe; State Co-dinator, Neighbourhood Watch, Alhaji Kolawale Sanni, and Chairman, Community Development Advisory Council, Prince Gabriel Awomodu.

    When the Spiritual Head, C and S Society Worldwide, Prophet Bola Adeuja, mounted the podium, the worshipers went wiild as they jumped and clapped as if intoxicated.

    Giving the dictionary meaning of dominion, he congratulated them on harvesting their dominion.

    According to the cleric, the blessing is what is the extra icing on the cake.

    “Though it isn’t easy to worship, God wants you and needs you. You have planted and now you are reaping. Do your work consistently and you will eat the fruit of your labour. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” he added.

  • Reps praise Amaechi on security, development

    The House of Representatives has praised Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi for promoting the security of oil firms, lives and property in the state.

    The Chairman, House of Representatives’ Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Hon. Dakuku Peterside, made the remark when he led a delegation of the committee to a courtesy visit at Government House Port Harcourt, on Tuesday.

    Peterside said companies in Rivers State had testified to the resilience of the Amaechi administration to restore and maintain peace.

    “Rivers State is host to two refineries and other multi-nationals which are strategic to our economy, we visited the refineries and they told us that your administration has restored peace and increased our economy, and they have also asked us to commend you,” he said.

    He expressed dismay over the continued vandalisation of pipelines and said the committee is taking concrete steps to eradicate the menace as well as ensure that the Petroleum downstream sector achieve its desired objective to improve the nation’s economy.

    “One of the problems this committee has observed is vandalization of pipelines which caused the refinery to shut down for three months, and this has greatly affected the economy.”

    Amaechi urged the Committee to seek ways of addressing the problem of bunkering in the nation’s waterways.

    The governor called for the prosecution of all those involved in the oil subsidy scandal, adding that subsidy must be removed to enable leaders work within the provisions of the budget.

    “The National Assembly must rise and remove oil subsidy so that we can have money to fund projects for our people and give them the good things of life. “, Amaechi said.

    He explained that if the nation’s funds are properly managed, there would be economic growth which in turn creates employment opportunities and eliminates the tendency of pipeline vandalism.

    His words: “If we grow the economy and people get employed there will be no vandalism of oil pipeline.”

    The committee was in the state as part of its oversight function on some key sectors of the petroleum downstream economy, including the responsibility of monitoring the implementation of the annual budget.

    Meanwhile, Governor Amaechi has urged the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation to prevail on the Federal Government to speedily complete the ongoing reconstruction work at the Port Harcourt International Airport.

    Chairperson of the committee Nkeiruka Onyejeocha said the committee was in the state to inspect some capital projects especially the Port Harcourt International Airport and commend the governor for his laudable achievements.

    “We have come to inspect some capital projects in your state especially the international airport. All that you are doing in Rivers State is well known to us, you are doing well, keep it up, we are proud of you,” she said.
