  • Praises as station marks first anniversary

It was an unbridled outpouring of encomiums as a private radio station in Calabar, the Cross River State capital; Sparkling 92.3 FM marked its first year anniversary.

Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade, who spoke during the station’s inaugural lecture to mark the anniversary in Calabar, said the station added a new vista to broadcasting in the state.

Ayade commended the station, saying they have maintained a high standard in terms of content.

The governor, who spoke through the Permanent Secretary, Dr Aye Henshaw Jnr, said Sparkling FM has also improved the electronic media architecture in the state and created employment for the people.

He said people of Cross River State are beneficiaries and are better off for the station has broadened perspective and it is good people always get all the perspectives they can at all times for development of the society.

The governor praised the station for adding value to the ability of the people to access information, adding that under his administration, private stations have been sprouting, exemplifying the practicing democracy, as it should be.

While wishing them well, he urged the managers of the station to step up and expand their capacity.

Managing Director of the radio station, Mr. Innocent Idiongette, said they had, in the last one year, established themselves as a brand that delivers on the core tenets of broadcasting and journalism.

“This is reflected in our ranking as one of the best radio stations in Cross River State and in just one year as evidenced in the awards and recognitions that we have received from various organisations.

“Interestingly, the journey has just begun and the target is that our station will grow to be a major contributor to policy permutation and implementation, and social trends at all levels in the society,” he said.

In a keynote address by a former Head of Civil Service in the state, Chief Wilfred Inah, it was pointed out that there is no profession without inherent risks in its practice, but the hazards of journalism are immense.

Inah urged that in spite of all odds, the mass media should go ahead and play its role as the Fourth Estate of the Realm and complement the three arms of government, by identifying topical areas and focusing on them as its contribution to governance.

The guest lecturer, Prof. Offiong Ani Offiong, who spoke on the role of the media in national economic development with focus on Cross River, said media stations have strong roles to play in nation-building, even as he called for establishment of more private media outfits. He also urged them to start having television stations in addition to their radio stations.

He noted that before the advent of new private broadcasting stations in the state, development strives were very slow and the government was more lackadaisical, adding that the station has done a lot in checkmating the excesses of government.

Ani said Sparkling FM has won awards in the past one year; showing their dexterous capability in the area of national development using their informative and entertainment skills.

“Just one year after establishing the station, they have been named the radio station of the year in the South-South zone of the country and just two weeks after as the campus choice of the year. They have done well,” he said.

He said the state government and its citizens have been able to benefit from very good broadcasters and journalists working in various media organisations.

General Manager of Sparkling 92.3 FM in Calabar, Mr. Effiong Nyong, said the lecture, which was part of activities to mark the anniversary would continue annually and would be focused on looking at different aspects of society.

He said the maiden edition was focused on the role of the media in national economic development using Cross River State as a case study.

“The essence of this lecture is to help the government and other business stakeholders explore the potential in the media to attain economic prosperity. For anything the government wants to do, the people need to know and understand. But we have a peculiar situation in Nigeria where every other activities of the government are secret.

“Because there is no openness, we have a situation where much of what government achieves is not known by the people. What thrive in the public space are rumours,” he said.

Among other events to mark the anniversary, he said, were a Disc Jockey festival; separate novelty football matches between old boys and current students of Hope Waddell Training Institute and St Patrick’s College; and a visit to the orphanage.

He said: “When the enemies rose in diverse ways against Governor Wike, God stood  by him. God will receive the glory for helping Governor  Wike to deliver in the midst of adversity. We say thank you God.

“It is by the Grace of God that Governor Wike has done all these in 2018. As we enter 2019, we are confident that God will do more for Rivers State.  We lift Rivers and place it in God’s hand.  He will keep the state and do wonderful  works  in  2019”.

The first Bible Reading from Exodus 12: 1-14 was taken by the Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, while the second reading from Luke 4: 14-22 was taken by the deputy governor.

There was another session of prayers that focused on the blessing of God in the lives of the people.  The congregation prayed for God’s blessing and favour in 2019.

The prayer session was led by the Chaplain, Venerable Sunday Opara.

Declarations were made  for God to ensure that the people eat the good of the land, with incoming investments in 2019.

Joining faith with the governor, the leaders spoke peace and security on Rivers, saying peace in the state would enhance development.

For Nigeria, the leaders prayed God to end the suffering by using 2019 to raise a new leadership at the federal level.

In Rivers, the leaders asked God for continuity, because of their satisfaction with Wike.

They prayed for credible elections devoid of manipulation by INEC and security agencies.

In his sermon, Anglican Bishop of Evo Diocese, Rev Innocent Ordu said in 2019, God would take control, protect the people, and help them overcome challenges.

Ordu said to merit God’s blessing, people should add value to humanity  and improve the society.

He said as people receive the grace of God, they should bear fruits for God and mankind.

Rivers, he said, would need fruit-bearing professionals, civil servants, top government officials and key stakeholders  to sustain progress.

As the countdown to 2019 began, the oldest chorister, Amaopusenibo Martindale Mac-Pepple, led a string  of songs that inspired the congregation.

Speaking for the governor, Ipalibo Harry Banigo said in 2019 God would silence enemies of the state as the election would end in Wike’s favour .

The governor said he would continue to deliver projects and remain committed  to the people.

Wike urged the people to continue  to support  his administration as he led his top officials to usher in 2019, with New Year best wishes.

Rev Ordu offered the first prayer in 2019, declaring the blessing of God on Rivers, Wike and the people.

  • Akeredolu praises aide at anniversary

The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu has challenged government appointees to upgrade their skills in line with modern techniques in governance.

Akeredolu, who spoke at the 50th birthday celebration of his Special Adviser on Health, Dr. Ajibayo Adeyeye in Akure, the Ondo State capital, noted that Adeyeye’s versatility made him a pillar of the administration.

According to Akeredolu, the impact of the special adviser on governance could not be underrated, stressing that he relied on him for critical health decisions. He said the combination of Adeyeye and the Health Commissioner, Dr. Wahab Adegbenro has made issues of health management an easy one for him to deal with.

He said while the commissioner is well grounded in medical practice, Adeyeye is well experienced in the area of health management, making their combination a tremendous value.

Also speaking, Ekiti State Governor-elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi described Adeyeye as a brother whose advice on many issues of life over the years is reliable.

He commended the former Lagos State lawmaker for his great service to the Ondo people. Chairman of the occasion and an Ondo High Chief, Chief Olabanji Akingbule described Adeyeye as a true chip of the old block.

Akingbule, who said he was a friend of the celebrator’s late father, said Ajibayo has shown that a good tree cannot produce a bad fruit.

He said: “The people of Ondo enjoyed his father and Ajibayo has stepped into that shoe and it is a special thing of pride to me,” he said.

The former lawmaker in the Lagos State House of Assembly, now aspiring to represent Ondo Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, had earlier empowered about 689 indigent residents of Ondo town with gifts ranging from N10,000 to N25,000.

Speaking, Adeyeye said the event was to thank God for what He has done for him, noting that his plan to affect the lives of the less privilege in his home town when he turns 50 has been in planning for over 10 years.

The event was climax by  the launch of his autobiography, presented by Akeredolu and Fayemi, on the out pouring of love towards him at the birthday celebration.

The medical doctor turn politician said, it was a clear indication that his service to the fatherland was well appreciated and that he was challenged to keep putting in his best whenever the opportunity calls.

  • IYC praises Seifa for releasing DSS detainees

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide yesterday applauded the Director-General, Department of State Sevices (DSS), Matthew Seifa, for releasing detainees held in the agency without trial.

IYC called on the Presidency to confirm the appointment of Seifa and make him the substantive head of DSS.

The Nation reported exclusively that the DSS was in the process of releasing suspects it detained without trial in Abuja.

Seven of the suspects, who were arrested in 2016 in Bayelsa State, were brought to Yenagoa at the weekend.

They were brought from the DSS Headquarters in Abuja to the Office of the DSS in Yenagoa and released to their family and friends, who milled around the agency’s office.

Some of the suspects were shedding tears of joy in the warm embrace of their friends when they marched out of the DSS facility.

The suspects looked unkempt with overgrown bears, rough skin and dirty clothes.

One of them, Clinton Ohaigbofa, confirmed that suspects held without trial were being released across the country.

Clinton, who hails from Ebedebiri in Ogbia Local Government, attributed the development to the disposition of the DSS boss.

He said they were held in underground cells in Abuja for over two years, adding that they suffered greatly.

The  IYC, in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Alfred Kemepado, hailed, describing him as a true democrat.

Kemepado said the release gave hope and value to democracy.

He urged Seifa  to look into the case of high profile detainees like El-zazaky, leader of Shiites and dispense fairness to all.

“IYC has spoken to colleagues from other ethnic nationalities and most have expressed their confidence that Mr. Seiyefa will tackle the humongous security challenges facing Nigeria today; from Boko Haram to the herdsmen palava and to recent activities that threaten our democracy”.

Kemepado thanked  President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Osibanjo for considering a competent son of the South to head the DSS.

“This is positively contrary to our earlier beliefs that the President disrespected us. We want to appeal to President Buhari to confirm Seifa’s appointment as we are willing to work with him and others to sustain the peace in Nigeria and in the Niger Delta, especially.

“We call on all groups to continue to support Seiyefa with information and prayers for the good of all. The  IYC appeals to Seiyefa not to yield to the antics of politicians but to uphold the values of his service and uphold our growing democracy”, he said.

  • Praises, fanfare as aviation activist marks 70th birthday

Glossy skin, radiant appearance and impeccable energy; all of these gave no hint Mrs Adeola Yesufu has clocked 70 years – the biblical yardstick for old age. Beaming with an infectious smile as she stood sprightly in the midst of family members and well wishers, Mrs Yesufu, the Chairman of the Governing Council, College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, cut a picture of a woman in her 50s.

But for her, life has just begun at 70.

It was a splurge of festivities, last weekend at Rosetree Event Centre on Victoria Island in Lagos, where Mrs Yesufu celebrated her birthday. The roll call of guests included family members, friends, top government functionaries and professional colleagues.

The Ekiti State Governor’s wife, Mrs Feyisetan Fayose and former Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Prof Modupe Adelabu, led high-profile dignitaries to the event.

The presence of Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe Aladesanmi, added a royal touch to the occasion, which began with prayers and thanksgiving at All Souls Anglican Church in Lekki Phase 1.

Mrs Yesufu, who retired from Air France, is an active member of Aviation Roundtable, the industry’s watchdog.

In his 13-minute homily during the thanksgiving, the guest minister, Venerable Olusegun Kuti, described Mrs Yesufu as a “special child of covenant”. The clergyman urged the celebrant not to stop appreciating God’s “special grace” in her life, noting that she looked younger than her age and had achieved all the goals she wished to.

Reading from Isaiah 66:8, Ven. Kuti said God’s covenant was divinely placed on anyone born in 1948 – the year which the nation of Israel was created by the United Nations (UN) resolution. He said Israel was created out of God’s covenant to the Israelis to give them a “holy nation”, adding that the birth of the celebrant in the year was an indication of a God’s covenant.

He said: “It was by covenant of God that Mrs Yesufu was born in a chosen generation when a holy nation was created. This is to show, first, the power of God, who has brought her out of her darkness into the most unique and marvelous life. This is why we all must join her today in singing Hallelujah and praises to our King.”

The cleric said Mrs Yesufu’s achievements on the home front and in her professional career was an indication of God’s seal on her personality to attain greatness in life, adding that she led a life worthy of emulation.

Taking the second reading from Jeremiah 29:10, Ven. Kuti urged the celebrant to express God’s power of restoration and visitation in her life. The clergyman said God was speaking to the Mrs Yesufu in Psalm 70:4 to always express divine salvation.

Ven. Kuti said: “It is God, who has given Mrs Yesufu a divine salvation to overcome many difficulties in life. Despite the ups and downs she has gone through in life, God has not given her wrinkles of regrets. She must expect more of God’s visitation and manifestation as He promised the Israelites in Babylon.”

The sermon was followed by hymns of praise rendered by the church’s choristers.

After the service, guests were hosted to an elaborate reception  where they were entertained by a live band.

Mrs Yesufu stood in awe as family members and professional colleagues paid glowing tributes to her.

A former Minister of Health and ex-president of Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce, Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, opened the floodgate of accolades, describing Mrs Yesufu as “one of the prettiest Nigerians”.

He said: “I always call Mrs Yesufu  the ‘Ekiti young girl’ because she is unarguably one of the prettiest Nigerian women of this generation. She is a woman of substance who has made us proud on all fronts with her feats that traverse diverse areas. She is very active in many areas, especially in aviation where she left far-reaching legacies. Because of her unique feats in aviation sector, the French government gave her a special medal of honour.”

Mrs. Adelabu said her friend Mrs Yesufu remains every woman’s pride, adding that she is a prayer warrior who believes in the power of prayers.

Chairman of Aviation Roundtable Mr Gbenga Olowo, who chaired the occasion, said there was no area in the industry in which Mrs. Yesufu  did not have her footprints. He described her as a “thorough-bred professional”.

Frontline lawyer and Chairman of Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) Governing Council, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), said Mrs Yesufu was a good homemaker despite her professional achievements.

Full of joy, Mrs Yesufu acknowledged the tributes, thanking the guests and family members for celebrating with her.

  • Oliseh praises self

    Oliseh praises self

Sunday Oliseh, former Nigerian international and former coach of the Super Eagles, somewhat reminds Hardball of the lizard, in one of Chinua Achebe’s novels.

“The lizard that falls from the high Iroko tree,” goes that saying, “praises itself, even if no one else did”.

And just like the lizard in that tale, Oliseh would sound it loud and clear that the revival that the national team is experiencing, en route to the World Cup in Russia, would not be complete without folks mentioning his part in it.

In a way, that is not untrue.  Yes, Oliseh first invited the duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi, to join the team, after inheriting the rump of the Stephen Keshi team.  The pair would make a definitive contribution to a breezy Mondial qualification, under Gernot Rohr.

Indeed, apart from the two youngsters kickstarting Nigeria’s qualification with a goal each, away to Zambia, Iwobi would make qualification sure with his sweet winner against the same Zambia, even with a match to spare, away to Algeria.

But Oliseh easily forgets — and clearly would also want everyone else to forget — how his needless rift with Vincent Enyeama, team captain and number 1 goalkeeper, and the juvenile manner he passed the captaincy to Ahmed Musa, ruptured the team and, even before the World Cup African zone elimination, rendered the team’s campaign in tatters.

Oliseh himself fled from the gargoyle he had created, resigning most sensationally, if not cowardly, thereby leaving the team in the lurch.

But then came Rohr, who perhaps nobody, maybe except his Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) employers gave a chance; and everything came together for the team.  The rest, they say, is history!

If Oliseh had stayed with that team, with its unity totally shred as it was, would we be talking of a World Cup ticket today?  Nobody can say for sure.  But, except a miracle happened, everything would probably have turned a debacle, given the then ongoing trend.  Still, thank God and thank the NFF, Nigerian ball fans were spared that agony.

Oliseh is a big name in Nigerian football.  He was part of that champagne party that set Africa agog in 1994,before setting USA 94 ablaze, at Nigeria’s debut at the World Cup.  If he had made a good show of his Eagles coaching assignment, he probably would have equalled Stephen Keshi’s record, as both player and coach, to have lifted the African Nations Cup.  But alas, that dream crashed before it took off.

Oliseh has earned his stripes as one of Nigeria’s golden generation of internationally acclaimed footballers, going after to enjoy a rich professional career in Europe.  Though his famed knowledge of the game is not in doubt, being a much sought after pundit and highly respected member of the FIFA technical family, his actual delivery as a coach has been limited.

His flaw has always been his temperament — a tad too stubborn and rigid — and his failure to always build a consensus (preferring instead to ram things down the throat of his players and employers), infuse unity in his team and push that team to greater heights.

That is what he should learn from Rohr who, with a team Oliseh almost doomed, snatched success and fame from the jaws of failure and odium.

Enough of all these self-serving claims!

He further disclosed that the mill has empowered a lot of local farmers, saying “we do not farm rice, but we work with the farmers from seed to harvest to ensure high quality paddy, which we then buy off them. We purchase paddy from up to 50,000 farmers here in Kebbi State”.

As part of the company’s social responsibility efforts, Sadiq said WACOT has focused on women, children, healthcare and nutrition – core pillars of the reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, adolescent, health and nutrition (RMNCAH+N) campaign championed by the  wife of the President Mrs. Aisha Buhari.

  • Group plans 400-hour praises for Buhari’s recovery, independence anniversary

Group plans 400-hour praises for Buhari’s recovery, independence anniversary

TO thank God over the recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari from his ailment, a Christian group, Halleluyah Nigeria, yesterday announced the beginning of a 400-hour praise programme.

The praise programme, being coordinated by the Chaplain of Villa Chapel, Oluseyi Malomo, is scheduled to start tomorrow.

Briefing reporters in Abuja, Malomo said the praise programme, which will last for 16 days, is also to commemorate the 57th independence anniversary of Nigeria slated for October 1st.

The Villa Chaplain noted that similar programme was held last year for 365 hours, which led to answered prayers for the nation’s exit from recession.

He added that the icing on the cake for the answered prayers was the return of the President from his medical trip from the United Kingdom.

Malomo said: “A year after that event, and just a few days ago, we received with cheerful hearts the good news that we are now officially out of recession.

“It is only logical for us to gather together and return our thanks and praise to this God who responds and answers the heartfelt prayers of all Nigerians.”

Malomo said top government functionaries, including the President and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, are expected to attend the programme scheduled to hold at Sharon Ultimate Hotel and at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja.

  • Obasanjo praises Buhari on anti-graft war, Boko Haram

Obasanjo praises Buhari on anti-graft war, Boko Haram

The Buhari administration deserves credit for its war against Boko Haram insurgency and efforts to rid the nation of corruption, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said.

But Obasanjo faulted the Federal Government’s approach to economic revival. He said the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government had not done enough to revive the economy and redeem the country’s image on the international scene.

The ex-president was the guest on HARDtalk, a 30-minute programme on BBC TV, where he was engaged on contemporary challenges facing Africa, including population explosion, corruption and the energy challenge.

Assessing the government’s achievement in the last two years, Obasanjo said: “All I said about Buhari before he got there have not changed. I said Buhari is not strong on the economy; that has not changed. I said Buhari is not strong on foreign affairs, this view has not changed. I said Buhari would fight corruption; he has made attempt to fight corruption. Please, give him that credit. I said Buhari would fight insurgency; he has made attempt to fight insurgency. Give him that credit. If anyone sees pessimism in Buhari’s government, I do not see pessimism. I am optimistic.”

Obasanjo said his administration made effort to reduce the nation’s dependence on crude oil through agricultural reforms and investment in infrastructure. He blamed his successors for abandoning the reforms and programmes initiated by his administration to diversify the nation’s economy and reduce dependence on oil.

He said: “When we came in, cocoa production in Nigeria was 150,000 metric tons. By the time I left as president, it was 400,000 metric tons… I started a 25-year railway programme to connect the whole Nigeria and I started building it. That plan is what they are using today. But, those who took over from me decided they would not go on with it.

“You talked about power. When I came into government in 1999, the price of oil was between $8 and $9 per barrel. By the time it got to $22 per barrel, we started going into power production.”

Obasanjo rejected the notion that his government institutionalised corruption, saying the present crop of national lawmakers who accused him of being a “grandfather of corruption” were talking rubbish. He said he never offered anyone a bribe during his administration, insisting that the National Assembly is a cesspool of corruption.

He said: “When I took over in 1999, the first message the National Assembly members sent to me through my National Security Adviser was that, whenever I was sending a bill to them, I should send it with money. I said no. If I send a bill to them and they don’t pass it, I would still run the affairs of Nigeria. I never gave anybody a bribe to do anything. Never.

“I created the EFCC and ICPC. The EFCC investigated me thoroughly and came out with a report that completely absolved me of corruption. I will keep on lecturing them (National Assembly members) including you (the BBC host) who do check the results of our efforts. The anti-corruption institution that I set did not even take out the report on my government when I was there. It did its report and waited until I left, and then submitted the report to my successor.”

Obasanjo described the increasing African population as his greatest fear, saying the continent is sitting on ticking bomb if the youth are not engaged productively. He said education remained the potent tool to control African population growth.

Asked how many children he has, the ex-president dodged the question, saying his culture does not allow him to openly count his children. Obasanjo, however, admitted that he made a mistake to have given birth to more than 20 children, stressing that he had told his children not to toe his path.
