Easten Bar adopts candidates as Wike preaches peace

As Christians join others around the world to celebrate Christmas, the Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Buruji Kashamu has called for love as a prelude to the entrenchment of sustainable peace in the country.

In his goodwill message at Christmas, Kashamu  urged Nigerians to also see the season as an opportunity to reach out to fellow Nigerians irrespective of tribe, religion and other cleavages.

The statement reads:  “The annual commemoration of the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ is a most auspicious time for us, as individuals and as a nation, to rededicate ourselves to the virtues and ideals which the Messiah preached and exemplified during his earthly ministry.

“Christmas is not only about the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is also the celebration of the greatest gift to mankind. Therefore, let us seize this moment to reach out to fellow Nigerians. Let us promote the things that unite us as a people rather than those that divide The Us along ethnic, religious and party lines.

“I enjoin us all to resolve this Christmas to make the ideals of peace, harmony, tolerance, love and goodwill to all even more manifest in our interactions with others. The season of Christmas is one that exemplifies the virtues of love and peaceful co-existence. We must continue to extend a hand of love, kindness and live as one big family irrespective of our  beliefs and leanings. We must also continue to respect one another; respect for one another is a key element for national peace and growth.”

  • Akintola preaches peace

Legal practitioner Adeniyi Akintola (SAN) has enjoined Nigerians to embrace the virtues of love and peaceful co-existence that this season symbolises.

In a Christmas message issued yesterday, Akintola, a leading Oyo State All Progressives Congress (APC)  urged Nigerians to seize the moment to reach out to fellow Nigerians in need.

He said: “The season of Christmas is one that exemplifies the virtues of love and peaceful co-existence. We must continue to extend a hand of love, benevolence and live as one family, irrespective of our faith or tradition. We must also continue to respect each other’s right to live freely and peacefully.

“Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ who is the symbol of Christianity and the harbinger of peace, love and good tidings and there is no better way to celebrate the season than by showing love and being our brother’s keeper.

”Let us cultivate the habit of giving to those who need our help at this time, it would go a long way to put smiles on their faces.”

He urged continuous support for the Abiola Ajimobi administration’s policies and programmes, and expressed the hope that the developmental strides would continue to spread across the state.

  • Gowon preaches unity

    Gowon preaches unity

Former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon has urged Nigerians to put aside ethnic differences.

He spoke as guest of honour at the 18th valedictory service and graduation ceremony of Jextoban High School, Ibafo, Ogun State, over the weekend.

Gen. Gowon said next month would make it 50 years since his regime called for peace and togetherness in the face of incessant crises rocking the nation.

He said: “My hope and prayer, after the Civil War where we disagreed with one another and had to go into a fight, is that Nigerians would now continue to love themselves and that we do not continue to raise our arms against one another. But with love and charity amongst us, we can be able to build the country to the sort of country that we want it to be.”

Gen. Gowon cautioned lawmakers against selfishness in their call for the restructuring of the nation.

“People are saying restructuring, what type of restructuring are they talking about? As long as it is something that is of good of Nigerians, not restructuring to their way of doing things. I think we have to be careful when we talk about restructuring. If it is something good, I am sure the people would be able to give it their blessing. But it must not be restructuring for personal or group interest,” he said.

Advising the graduates, the 82-year-old major general recalled that when he became Head of State at the age of 32, he had never imagined such responsibility would be thrust upon him, but he rose to the occasion.

The proprietor of the school, Mr Adedayo Ojo, counselled the pupils.

Ojo said: “You, our outgoing students, must always remember the sons or daughters of whom you are. You read in the papers everyday how the mighty have fallen… there are people who got to their peak in life through hard work, transparency, honesty and total dependence on God. Such I say you should emulate. Any pursuit of fame, riches or academic success built on false foundation of dishonesty, or corruption is bound to collapse disastrously. Learn to be content with whatever you have, never try to cut corners to get to the top, become the promising leaders that will effect the real change we are yearning for in our nation and build on the Christian values you have learnt.”

  • Akume preaches love

    Akume preaches love

Senate Minority leader George Akume yesterday called for love and peace in the spirit of Easter.

In a message, Akume said: “My heart is filled with immense happiness and I give gratitude to God as I congratulate all Christians, the people of Benue North-West Senatorial District, supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the people of this nation on this year’s commemoration of the death and resurrection of our Lord.

“I am thankful to God for his enduring mercy over us as individuals and as a nation and I also want to appreciate Nigerians for their steadfastness and patriotism in the face of unpredictable political atmosphere. As our Lord Jesus is our spiritual hero by his death and resurrection, so also Nigerians have distinguished themselves not just in the choices they made in the presidential and parliamentary elections, but also in the way and manner they conducted themselves.

“As we celebrate the death and resurrection of our Saviour, we should not be carried away by the festivities, but take out time to reflect deeply on the most important principles of all religious faith, which include love, tolerance and selflessness, and continue to imbibe and practise same in all our interactions among ourselves and with God.

“That we are devoted to the celebration of Easter is an indication that we are conscious of our obligations to the Almighty.  I urge all Nigerians to show the same level of religious zeal and take the sacred responsibility of participating constructively in nation-building.

“The death and resurrection of our Lord should act as a reminder and as a stimulant that will make all of us join hands with the emerging agents of positive change as we strive to ensure that Nigeria becomes great in the shortest possible time.

“I wish all of us a very memorably Easter and I advise that we celebrate it with love, restraint and respect for our differences, where such exist.”

  • Cleric preaches Godliness

The General Evangelist of the Christ Apostolic Mission Church (CAMC) a.k.a Oke Igbala, Ilupeju, Lagos State, Remi Adebayo, yesterday admonished Nigerians and their leaders to shun materialism and live for God.

His admonition came on the heels of the death of a former Minister of Information, Prof Dora Akunyili, last Saturday, and the demise of a devout member of the church, Deaconess Obadare, on June 1.

“Whenever a person dies, his or her time is up; it is God’s will and there is nothing anybody can do about it since no mortal can query Him. He is our Creator and He reserve the licence to call us whenever He so wishes. What we need do is to prepare for it with our day-to-day activities.

“Look at all the accomplishments of the woman (Akunyili). Look at her contributions to national development. Look at the passion of Deaconess Obadare for the work of God. Both never knew they would not know today. One lesson we must learn when people like that die is the fact that we must live every second as if it is our last. We must fine-tune our relationships with God through the way we relate with our fellow human beings. We must behave like the true images of God in piety. Once we can internalise the fact that God can call us anytime, any day, we will walk in His ways for His glory.”

  • Pastor preaches holiness

    Pastor preaches holiness

A pastor, Samson Oluwamodede, has warned students against committing sin, urging them to embrace holiness.

Oluwamodede gave the warning during a prayer session organised by the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) last Sunday.

The prayer was held at the university’s Relaxation Centre. The man of God is the founder of the Prayer Centre Church of God Worldwide. He said he was in the institution to pray for the students to be successful and to warn them against certain sinful acts, which were in contrast with the standard of God.

The prophet told the students that everything they needed to be successful in life was in Christ Jesus, adding: “all that is expected of you is holiness.”

He said: “God will come at anytime to harvest the world; there is grace and mercy for you this time, be holy as our God is holy.”

Oluwamodede, who warned the students against indulging in fornication, advised students to desist from prostitution and cultism.

He said: “Always remember the son of whom you are.” He noted that those who partook in unholy acts would not be part of the the Kingdom of God. “Malice, greed, fornication, putting on trousers and artificial hair-do by ladies can lead one to the hell fire,” he said.

Quoting 1st Corinthians 11 vs 6, the pastor warned students against worshiping in churches where female do not cover their heads and wear trousers, saying that God is not present in such churches.

He said prayer for students and management. He prayed for peace to continue to reign and rebuke the spirits of untimely death that might be hovering on every student and member of staff.

The cleric promised to always visit the school every last Sunday of the month to pray for the students. Some of the students who spoke with CAMPUSLIFE described the prayer as timely as the first semster examination approaches.
