FULL LIST: New rules fans need to know about as 2025–26 EPL season begins

The 2025–26 Premier League season kicked off on Friday, August 15, with defending champions Liverpool hosting Bournemouth. Alongside the football, fans will also notice a number of new laws and rule adjustments introduced by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) that will shape the campaign.

For supporters, nothing is more frustrating than seeing your team punished by a rule you didn’t even know existed. Last season, for example, stricter enforcement of “delaying the restart” laws meant players could be booked for something as simple as kicking the ball away in frustration. With this year’s changes, the focus shifts again—this time with significant updates for goalkeepers, penalties, and player behaviour.

Here’s a full list of the key changes:

    1. Approaching Referees – “Captain Only” Rule

Referees now have the option to invoke a “Captain Only” law during matches. When this happens, only one player per team—the captain—may approach the referee to discuss decisions.

If the captain is a goalkeeper, the team must designate an outfield representative during the coin toss.

Referees and players can still engage in conversation, but this rule reinforces the Participant Behaviour Charter introduced in 2023, aiming to reduce crowding around officials.

    2. The Goalkeeper’s ‘Eight-Second Rule’

Aimed at cutting down time-wasting, goalkeepers may now only control the ball with their hands or arms inside the penalty area for a maximum of eight seconds.

    Control includes:

    Holding the ball between hands/arms

Resting the ball on an outstretched hand

    Bouncing it on the ground

    Tossing it into the air

    How it works:

    Referees decide when possession begins.

For the final five seconds, referees raise a hand as a countdown signal.

If an opponent unfairly prevents the goalkeeper from releasing the ball, an indirect free kick is awarded.

If the goalkeeper exceeds eight seconds:

First offence: Corner kick to the opposition (from the nearest side).

    Second offence: Warning.

    Third offence: Yellow card.

    3. Drop Ball Restarts

If play is stopped inside the penalty area → the ball is dropped to the goalkeeper.

If play is stopped outside the penalty area → the ball is dropped at the stoppage point to whichever team had, or would have had, possession.

    4. Double-Touch Penalties

After the Julián Álvarez incident in last season’s Champions League:

An accidental double-touch during a penalty = retake, no matter the outcome.

A deliberate double-touch = free kick for the defending team.

    5. Inadvertent Interference

If someone off the field (substitute, sent-off player, coach, or even an injured player temporarily off) accidentally touches the ball while it is already leaving play:

The restart is an indirect free kick, with no sanction.

If the interference is clear, deliberate, and impactful:

Restart is a direct free kick or penalty.

The offender (manager, coach, or staff) may also be shown a red card.

    6. Referee Positions During Penalties

During penalty kicks, the assistant referee will stay on the touchline in line with the penalty mark.

VAR will be solely responsible for monitoring goalkeeper encroachment.

With these changes, the Premier League hopes to reduce wasted time, improve player discipline, and bring greater consistency to officiating. Fans and players alike would do well to keep these rules in mind—because a small detail could decide a big game.

Sunderland beat West Hamon Premier League return

Sunderland made a winning start to their first Premier League campaign since 2016-17 as they deservedly beat West Ham at a raucous Stadium of Light.

Eliezer Mayenda, who scored in the Championship play-off final in May, nodded substitute Omar Alderete’s delivery into the corner shortly after the hour mark to spark wild scenes of jubilation among the home supporters.

It was another play-off hero who doubled Sunderland’s lead as Dan Ballard – who rescued Regis le Bris’ team in the semi-final first leg against Coventry – guided his header into the corner.

And Wilson Isidor put the icing on the cake in added time, beating Hermansen with a well-placed shot into the far corner.

  • How are Premier League fixtures decided?

How are Premier League fixtures decided?

According to the Premier League, putting together the fixture schedule takes up to six months.

The process is managed by multinational IT company Atos, which has its headquarters just outside of Paris.

A slew of information about the football calendar – international dates, European matchweeks, and the scheduling of the lower leagues – is inputted into the system so it can generate a list which functions.

Further information such as policing capacity and geographical proximity are also taken into account. For example, the system is told that Liverpool and Everton cannot play at home on the same weekend, because doing so would put too much on strain on police resources and transport infrastructure in one city.

The same goes for other closely situated rivals, like Manchester United and Manchester City, but the rules are more relaxed in London owing to the prevalence of top-flight clubs in the capital.

Clubs can also make requests in case there is a potential stadium clash. For example, Old Trafford will host the Super League Grand Final on Saturday, 11 October 2025, so Manchester United are likely to request their fixture is away that weekend.

Once all of the background information has been inputted, clubs are put in a pairing grid, which defines when they will play at home and when they will play away. From there, the system generates a randomised set of fixtures.

The fixture list is manually verified by Atos staff and representatives from the Premier League and Football League. If any issues are spotted, the process is repeated again and a new

  • Salah wins Premier League player of season award

Salah wins Premier League player of season award

Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah has been named Premier League player of the season.

It is the second time the 32-year-old Egyptian has won the award, which is decided after votes from the public are combined with those from a panel of football experts, having also claimed it in the 2017-18 campaign.

Salah, who led the Reds to the Premier League title this season, beat off the challenge from team-mates Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch, who was named young player of the season.

Dutchman Gravenberch, 23, leads all Premier League midfielders this season for interceptions with 59, and ranks top among Liverpool players for the times he has won possession.

Also shortlisted for the main honour were Arsenal’s Declan Rice, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, and Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood.

It is the first time since 2018-19 that a Manchester City player has not won the award.

Liam Delap (Ipswich), Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest), Dean Huijsen (Bournemouth), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Joao Pedro (Brighton), Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa) and William Saliba (Arsenal) were also on the young player shortlist.

Going into Sunday’s final game of the season against Crystal Palace, Salah has 28 league goals – five more than anyone else – as well as 18 assists – six more than any other player and two off the record of 20 held by Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne.

This season he also became the highest-scoring overseas player in Premier League history, overtaking Sergio Aguero’s 184 goals, and signed a new two-year contract to stay at Anfield until 2027.

This month Salah was named Football Writers’ Association footballer of the year for the third time after receiving more than 90% of the votes.

Arteta mulls Arsenal’s second spot target in Premier League

Mikel Arteta said he has no regrets over Arsenal’s season despite missing out on silverware again and wants to finish as the “best of the rest” in the Premier League.

The Gunners, who face third-placed Newcastle tomorrow, have been the closest challengers to champions Liverpool all season.

But their league form has tailed off in recent weeks, with just one win in their past six games, either side of a Champions League semi-final exit to Paris Saint-Germain.

If Newcastle win at the Emirates they would leapfrog Arsenal into second with a single game remaining, though both clubs are likely to finish in the top five and qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Arteta said his injury-hit team, runners-up to Manchester City for the previous two seasons, had been “phenomenal”.

“You probably have regrets in your life and anything that you do in professional life as well when you haven’t done your best,” he said. “I can guarantee and give you my word that we have all tried our very best. If you ask if we wanted a different outcome, especially with how close we’ve come again, then the answer is ‘yes’. But that doesn’t undermine a lot of incredible things that this team has done again in the context that we play, against the opposition that we play, with the circumstances that we had. It’s impossible to undermine.”
