    • Scores in Watford draw with Everton

Super Eagles forward Odion Ighalo began the new season on scoring note, grabbing the second goal for Premier League returnees Watford on Saturday at the Goodison Park. Although Odion’s strike failed to hand Watford victory, it nonetheless saved the team from beginning the season on a losing note.

Ighalo who was in action for only 16 minutes after coming in as substitute for José Manuel, was only 10minutes old on the pitch before netting the all-important goal that gave Watford a 1-2 lead. The jubilation for Coach Lloyd Doyley tutored Watford was however shortlived as Everton grabbed an equalizer three minutes later to level scores at 2-2. Mother luck appear to have favored the visitors as the final result did not represent their below average (35%) possession as against Everton’s domineering display. Ighalo who joined Watford in 2014, has so far made 27 appearances for the side with 17 goals to show for his effort. Saturday’s goal marks his first Premier League goal for the side.

The statement reads in part: “I thought this would never happen but it is time for me to say goodbye to Chelsea Football Club. • Says Enyimba, Pillars, others have made enquiries about Nasarawa Utd players

Nasarawa United head coach Mohammed Babaganaru has hinted that some of his players are being courted by Enyimba and Kano Pillars ahead of the next Glo Premier League season.

Babaganaru led the Solid Miners to fifth position with 59 points from 38 matches and has almost sealed a new deal to stay with Nasarawa United in the next soccer season.

The former Kano Pillars’ tactician has expressed that the club’s failure to qualify for CAF inter club next year is taking its toll on his team as some top clubs have been contacting his players and that they are being swayed with continental opportunities.

The coach revealed to SportingLife that he rued his inability to take the Solid Miners to the CAF Confederation Cup when they were very close to nicking a ticket only to lose it to Warri Wolves adding that a place on the continent would have kept some of his best players.

Despite the seeming depletion of his side ahead of the next season, Babaganaru has disclosed to SportingLife that he was very certain that he would produce a team that would be better than last season even though he may have to make do with getting new players to fill the void to be left by departing players.

“We didn’t build the team around any individual player and so we will still be a force to reckon with in the League next season. I’m aware Enyimba and Kano Pillars are in talks with some of my players but I am very convinced we will raise another formidable squad that will even perform better than the last season.

“I have already agreed in principle to continue working with Nasarawa United but I am yet to sign. It is not an issue because I have made up my mind to stick with Nasarawa United for another season. I will like us to build on what we achieved last season. We were very close to qualify for the continent but we missed out narrowly.

“Had it been we qualified for CAF Confederation Cup, this would have made some of my best players to stay but irrespective of their decision, we are going to get better players to replace those that have signalled intention to go to another club,” Babaganaru told SportingLife.

  • Leke James sure of Premier League survival

Leke James sure of Premier League survival

After scoring his sixth goal of the season against Stabæk last weekend, Aalesund striker Leke James reckons that the 3 – 0 victory has all but guaranteed his team Premier League survival.

For most part of the ongoing campaign, the Colour Line Stadium outfit have flirted with relegation, but they are now one of the form teams in the Tippeligaen, having garnered 10 points from their last five games.

“It was not an easy game but the spirit in the team at the moment is high as it used to be.

“We corrected some few mistakes after the first half, got ourselves motivated and came into the second half dominating the game.

“I think we can start thinking of ending in a good or comfortable position,” Leke James told allnigeriasoccer.com.

Leke James has suited up 17 times in the Premier League this season, with 1,491 minutes of playing time under his belt.

Tenth on the table AaFK have five points more than SK Brann, who occupy the last relegation spot.

  • NFF: No suspension of Premier League matches

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has urged all stakeholders to discountenance a statement from the League Management Company that matches of the Nigeria Premier League are being suspended.

“It has come to our notice that the League Management Company has been issuing notices to clubs in the Premier League that matches are being suspended from this weekend.

“This is totally untrue. If the LMC received a notice from the Nigeria Referees Association about purported withdrawal of referees, the LMC should have brought this to the notice of the NFF and not to take a decision to suspend the League on its own,” NFF President, Ambassador Chris Giwa, said in Abuja on Thursday.

Giwa expressed his unhappiness with the Nigeria Referees Association for the threat to withdraw referees from the Premier League, and said the NFF would not take the matter lightly.

“As the owners of the League, the Nigeria Football Federation is hereby making it clear that Premier League matches are not being suspended. Matches scheduled for this weekend will definitely take place,” Giwa affirmed.

The NFF has therefore called on all referees appointed for this weekend’s matches to go for their matches.

  • ‘Our mission is to play in advertising’s premier league’

‘Our mission is to play in advertising’s premier league’

CEO of  marketing communication agency, Noah’s Ark, Lanre Adisa, in this interview with Bukola Afolabi reflects on  issues in the industry, such as introduction of pitch fees, ability to survive current industry challenges, the onslaught of digital advertising, APCON reform and his organisation’s philosophy.

Between last year and the first quarter, the creative industry is still crying over issues ranging from pitch fee, dwindling creative spark as well as unhealthy financial status of agencies. Why is the industry still in the woods?

The issue of pitch fee is an ongoing thing. Successful implementation will depend on the individual agencies and their disposition to the collective industry stand on such matters vis-a-vis what they consider to be in the best interest of their business at every point in time. Considering what agencies put into pitches, paying pitch fees is one way of ensuring that clients don’t abuse the pitch process. Going by the overall performance at the last LAIF Awards, those of us in the creative business know that there’s more work to be done to get our work to a desirable standard that can compete favourably anywhere in the world. I believe that process has started with the formation of the Creative Directors Circle (CDC). We only need to rev up the pace.

Recently, top industry stakeholder, Gorge Thorpe, complained that most agencies are not rich while he also noted that multinational accounts are not really juicy as people often report. Are agencies truly poor?

You can say that our industry is going through a phase at the moment. While this is not the best of times for some, this is not necessarily the same for others. Like any entity, there will be challenges. That is not an issue. What matters is how we rise up to the challenge.

How resilient are we as an industry?

I won’t say agencies are poor in absolute terms. I think on the average, we are in survival mode. How we bounce back is the most important thing now. And that may not depend solely on the individual entities. We need to apply the creativity we sell to clients to our own business and I think there’s a lot in the APCON reforms that can get us going stronger as an industry.

In the era where people believe digital advertising will overtake traditional advertising, how will the creative industry survive?

I’m glad you mentioned the creative industry. It is not the channel that matters; it’s how we stay relevant as creative entrepreneurs. I don’t think we should fear digital. There will always be a role for traditional and digital advertising. As long as we remain in the creative business, our job is to see how we master all the possible tools in the best interest of our clients. In any case, digital is yet to really take off in Nigeria. What we have is more of media in the digital space as opposed to mould-breaking digital thinking. So there’s a big space there for any thinking agency that is ready to redefine itself. Come to think of it, there was a time when television was the new kid on the block that was revered the same way everyone talks about the internet today.

Many creative agencies now use 3Ds to design their artwork but it is assumed that the technology hardly portrays originality? Which school of thought do you belong to?

We don’t subscribe to a house style. We’d rather stick with a house discipline. That way, our execution is driven by the thrust of the idea as opposed to taking a cue from the style of the execution.

Your agency recently embarked on a campaign on child education but the creative concept sparked fear which made some media houses to reject publishing the advert. What’s the intention of the agency?

We are not in business just to make a living. We are all responsible for the little corner we’ve been given and whatever talent we’ve been blessed with. We thought at a time when there was so much hush about the menace that had taken over our land, our industry could help stir some reawakening and start a conversation on a possible way out of the terrorism menace from the point of view of the future of the Nigerian child. It’s almost clairvoyant in a way if you consider the global attention the Chibok abduction has sparked.

Your agency has always come up with creative concepts that try to break taboo. What’s Noah’s Ark creative philosophy?

Curiosity and courage are two out of our five creeds. It means that we go wherever the idea takes us as long as it’s in the best interest of the brands in our care.

How will you assess the creative industry in the light of the APCON reform?

I think it’s still early days in terms of the effect of the reform on the industry. A lot will depend on the will to implement the contents of the reform. I don’t expect to see change overnight, but if we are persistent and truly committed to change, we will see a difference in our business.

Some groups of people believe protectionism will not help industry growth?

I believe the intention is not to stifle growth. It behoves every country, every industry to find a way of ensuring a future for its stakeholders. In an increasingly global world, that throws up some kind of challenge. You want participation from outsiders, but then you also don’t want to leave your flank so open to the point that you get run over. We need some kind of balance and I think that will evolve with time.

With the current crisis hitting the Publicis/Omnicom merger, what is your opinion on the effect on global advertising and the Nigerian market?

There’s a whole lot of ego that plays out at the top of the chain. The hope is that the clients will benefit from these super structures. But then again, is that what we get? The whole world thought the merger was bound to wobble or collapse at some point. Only thing is no one thought it would be this early. As far as Nigeria is concerned, I don’t foresee any major change.

You agency is yet to have a foreign affiliation. Are you not a believer of foreign partnership/idea?

Every organisation will embark on things that are of strategic relevance to its interests. We are not against foreign affiliation as long as we know that it in line with our vision. Having a foreign tag to your name is not a mandatory for our business. Beyond affiliation, there is collaboration. We collaborate with other agencies in other parts of the world and that works for us. If we think affiliation will help our cause, we’ll surely consider it.

What is the total billing of the creative industry?

One of the banes of our business is the paucity or sometimes absence of data. Different sources will offer different estimates of the industry. As at last year, the general belief is that the industry is worth 300 billion naira. One can’t be really sure.

What is the mission of Noah’s Ark and how far have you achieved your mission since you started out?

Our vision is to play in the premier league of advertising, to earn the respect of clients and our peers wherever in the world they may be. It is even more important to earn that respect first in Africa. Every other region in Africa has left some imprint on the world in one way or the other except West Africa. We hope to change that story and join the conversation. From our modest achievements in the past six years of existence, we believe we are on our way to achieving that goal.

Nigerian ad agencies aspire to get the Cannes Lion award but none has been able. Why are we not there yet?

You can’t win the World Cup through mere aspiration. We need to work harder at it. It is possible and we shouldn’t give up trying. The consciousness to make it happen is stronger now than when I started my career when it was non-existent. We need to up our game and remain alive to the key issues in our industry beyond our shores.

OPERATION PREMIER LEAGUE RETURN: 3SC raid Premier League for players

    • Bayelsa, Nembe, Wolves, Enyimba and Kano Pillars’ players train with Oluyole Warriors
    • Club to play Kwara United in friendly match today in Ilorin

3SC of Ibadan are not taking the issue of their return to the premier league at the end of the 2013/2014 Nigeria National League(NNL) season with kid’s gloves.

The Oluyole Warriors have approached top elite clubs like Enyimba, Kano Pillars, Warri Wolves, Nembe City and Bayelsa United for fortification of players ahead of life in the NNL next season.

Despite finishing bottom of the Premier League last season with 46 points from 38 games, 3SC is still a beautiful bride which top players in the premier league still want to play for irrespective of the cadre the Ibadan based club would be playing next season.

The Oluyole Warriors’ Media Officer, Jubril Arowolo told SportingLife that the Nigerian football circle would be shocked at the quality of players under the stable of 3SC by the time the club releases their names ahead of the NNL season which starts on January 25th.

“We have players from Enyimba, Warri Wolves, Kano Pillars, Nembe City and even Bayelsa United training with us and they are all quality players. You will be shocked at the names of players we are going to be registering for the NNL season.

“Despite campaigning in the lower league, players are still willing to come to Ibadan to play for us. It shows our seriousness to return to the premier league at the end of the season, which is our priority,” Arowolo told SportingLife.

The club’s spokesman has also come out to correct the news making the rounds that 3SC played 21 players on transfer. He said the report is untrue and never came out from his desk as the club’s mouthpiece.

Arowolo said that only five players were transferred listed at the end of the last season’s campaign while six left the club for greener pasture. He also added that 10 players were suspended for various unsporting activities.

He also listed the names of the suspended players as Mutiu Adegoke, Olabisi Samuel, Chima Akas, Eke Jacob, Azeez Shobowale, Philip Asuquo, Osagona Ighodaro, Tony Edjomariegwe, Ismaila Gata and Laide Okanlawon.

Arowolo said he came out to correct the erroneous report so that the clubs they are currently training with can come to them for their transfer negotiations since they are still bonafide players of Oluyole Warriors. He noted that he doesn’t want a repeat of the Emmanuel Daniel saga again this term.

He gave the names of players that have been sold to other clubs as Morenikeji Akanbi, Tare Okeh, Lati Adigun, Musa Raphael, Akindele Toluwase and Charles Etuwe.

Arowolo also added that Oladapo Olufemi, Kingsley Eduwo, Gabriel Adikwu, David Amanyi and Richard Ocheayi left 3SC for greener pastures.

Arsenal craves fresh vigor for United trip

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, is concerned that his flying team may lose some of their intensity as their “big month” continues with a trip to Old Trafford on Sunday (1610 GMT). The Premier League leaders face champions Manchester United hot on the heels of beating Liverpool 2-0 at the Emirates, and overcoming Borussia Dortmund 1-0 away in the Champions League, with midfielder Aaron Ramsey especially on fire. Arsenal’s victory over Liverpool last weekend put them five points clear at the top for their biggest lead since February 2008. The Gunners have lost only once in the league this season, a 3-1 opening day home defeat by Aston Villa. “We passed (the test against Liverpool) in a convincing way,” Wenger told Arsenal Players. “The focus of the team and the togetherness you could feel from the outside, they refused to lose this game and you could feel that from the start. “You could not have predicted that after the first game (Villa) so let’s enjoy it, take a lot of encouragement from it and continue to develop as a team,” Wenger added. “And as well be cautious and be on our toes, because we changed it in an emphatic way, so let’s make sure we continue to grow and not think ‘OK let’s have a little breather’.” The tables have turned since a beleaguered Arsenal were humiliated 8-2 by United, which included a Wayne Rooney hat-trick in August 2011, in a low point for Wenger. Arsenal, who have not won silverware since 2005, are now eight points ahead of a United side still adapting to manager David Moyes’ methods, following Alex Ferguson’s retirement. “At the moment, with 10 games played, you can say 25 per cent of the season (has gone). You see, the first tendencies and trends but it’s still not settled,” Wenger said. “By the end of November, you will have a clearer idea.” (Reuters/NAN)
