Preparations heighten for Fashion Art Fusion

As preparations for the second edition of Fashion Art Fusion (FAF) is in top gear, organisers say it will be another opportunity for fans to enjoy a rare combination of art, spoken word, alternative music and fashion.

The event which is billed to hold at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, Lagos will, for its second edition, feature local designers such as Luzol, Queen Ahniva Ahniva, Ejiro Tafari and Ade Bakare, who are expected to showcase their best designs of the moment.

Organisers say this year’s edition of FAF will also feature three students from the Yaba College of Technology’s Fashion Design department, as a way of encouraging young and upcoming designers.

To spice things up, dance mavericks such as Dayo Liadi (Ijodee) and Squad One are also expected to grace the occasion.

Convener of the show and CEO of Luzol Sounds, Austin Aimankhu, noted that FAF is designed to make young talents attain their full potentials.

“The vision of this fashion show is not only about the runway, but a platform that will promote total arts of our country and beyond,” said Aimankhu, who before now catered mainly to fashion needs of corporate clients.

He said “Nigeria has talented artists but they do not have enough platforms to showcase these talents. We want to provide that opportunity to help them reach their full potential,” adding that ‘Wearable Art’ is also going to be promoted during the event which also features an exhibition.

“It would be good to see the human body being turned to a mobile canvas to showcase artwork,” said Aimankhu who studied Law at the University of Benin before veering into fashion. Aimankhu was also the official clothier of the recently held Lagos Arts and Jazz Festival, where he customised fabrics with Appliques of musical instruments.

According to Aimankhu, the event which is being sponsored by Vlisco, GAC Motors and other partners promises to be a kaleidoscope of the creative arts.

“It is a holy matrimony between the runway and visual arts,” he said.

At the last edition of Fashion Art Fusion in November last year, Aimankhu impressed his guests with his trademark, ‘Applique on fabrics’ which had actor Fred Amata among other celebrities that graced the runway.

  • Don calls for early preparations

    Don calls for early preparations

A don, Olutunji Makanjuola, on Wednesday said Nigeria must be proactive in its preparations for major competitions to boost its chances of winning laurels.

Makanjuola, who is a professor of psychology in the University of Lagos(UNILAG), made the remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. He noted that Nigeria had not fully imbibed the culture of early preparations for competitions, and said this attitude must change.

“Let’s take for an example, the Rio 2016 Olympics, it is around the corner and many other countries have started preparations and we have not. Nigeria at the present is reaping from the measure of its investment in sports.

“ If we continue the way we have been doing things, we should not expect a positive result. Our performance in major international events we attended was the reflection of our level of preparation and investment. You do not plant beans and expect to reap rice,’’ he said.

Makanjuola, who is also the chairman of the Lagos State Athletics Association, noted that the way the nation had prepared for the 2012 Olympics, was repeating itself. He said funds for the competition ought to have been released by now, to ensure intense preparations.

“To me if the money is not released on time, then it means that the money was not meant for Nigeria to prepare for the Games; but to participate, and in a jamboree. Nigeria recorded the highest number of government officials at the Games, even more than the number of athletes, which makes it a jamboree, he said.

The don listed other factors militating against Nigeria’s sports development to include poor facilities, incentives for athletes, lack of exposure, inadequate attention to sports at the grassroots and poor administration.

Our pre-season preparations have paid off — Emodi

Okey Emordi, Coach of Rangers International FC of Enugu, on Wednesday attributed the team’s brilliant start in the 2012/2013 Nigeria Professional League Season (NPFL) and the CAF Champions League to their pre-season preparations.

Emordi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on telephone that the club would not relent in its performance.

“We had a brilliant start in our NPFL season opening match against Enyimba FC of Aba, and the CAF champion’s league match against Vital’ O FC in Burundi. I want to attribute this to the hard work we had put into our preparations in the off-season period, and we are banking on that to come out tops,” he said.

The coach added that Rangers was able to secure the draw in Bujumbura, in spite of the absence of some of their key signings for the season. Emordi, who won the CAF Champions League as a coach with Enyimba in 2004, told NAN that Rangers currently parades young and skillful players.

“I am blessed with a lot of young skilful players, who are committed and ready to deliver at all times. Currently all plans are geared towards the return leg of the match on which we plan to record a resounding success. We are depending on these players and with God on our side, we will be triumphant,” he said.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has mapped out plans to commence preparation for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games immediately after the forthcoming Eko 2012 National Sports Festival (NSF) holding in Lagos from November 29 to December 9.

The statement added that the NSC Chairman/Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, has directed that “henceforth, only athletes who have shown enough will and zeal to compete in our national colours will be given consideration in the formation of a new-look Team Nigeria.

“The minister has also directed that the various sports associations must henceforth endeavour to take part in all national and international competitions available as that would keep the teams competitive in the build-up to the Olympics.”

Meanwhile, the minister has directed that the various Sports Zones created by the NSC be empowered to scout for and develop talents in their domains, while particular attention should be paid to such sports as taekwondo, judo, wrestling, weightlifting and athletics.
