She is gone, presidency confirms Betta Edu’s exit

Presidential spokesperson Mr. Bayo Onanuga has said that suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction Betta Edu has been formally relieved of her ministerial duties after President Bola Tinubu’s recent cabinet shuffle.

He said this during an appearance in Sunday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today.

This announcement ended months of conjecture that she might be reinstated to her former position.

The Nation reported Tinubu suspended the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, from office, over an alleged N585m scandal in the Ministry.

The President also directed Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into all aspects of the financial transactions involving the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, as well as one or more agencies thereunder.

Onanuga said on Edu’s permanent exit: “I think there is another person from Cross River in the cabinet. Betta Edu is gone. Don’t forget that she was suspended in January, and this is October.

“No, she is gone. Her position has been taken over by someone else — that’s the man from Plateau (Nentawe) who is now assuming the role. For this government, there is no place for her in the cabinet.”

Onanuga added: “The EFCC has not shared whatever they have, but if you consider the president’s action, it suggests that the EFCC may have submitted something that justified the president’s decision.”

Presidency dismisses ‘T-Pain’ jibe on Tinubu

Presidency yesterday waved off the “T-Pain” moniker directed at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as mischief-driven and a non-issue.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who defended his principal, insisted that Nigeria is on steady path toward recovery and growth.

Onanuga emphasized that President Tinubu remained focused on addressing the challenges facing Nigerians.

He said the President is well aware of the difficulties citizens are experiencing and has consistently acknowledged their struggles, assuring that he is working tirelessly to provide relief and foster prosperity.

Onanuga, who chronicled the government’s accomplishments, countered criticisms about the state of the economy. He spoke on a television programme monitored by this newspaper.

“Despite inflation, we are still recording economic growth,” Onanuga said.

Highlighted the first two quarters of the year, during which the country saw positive economic trends, Onanuga said: “In the first half of this year, we recorded about $9.1 trillion in revenue,” he explained, noting that this achievement was made without significant revenue from oil, a sector traditionally relied upon by the Nigerian economy.

“Mainly, the money collected came from industries, from other sources.”

The Presidential spokesman disagreed that the economy regressing, but rather “improving.”

He pointed to the export figures, which have surpassed imports, a development he termed a “positive sign.”

The special adviser went on: “Look at the stock market -people who invested there are making money. Our stock index has gone up to about 100, 000.”

Acknowledging some of the challenges, Onanuga expressed confidence that upcoming harvests would help bring prices down.

“The CBN has been hiking interest rates because it wants to control inflation. Food inflation is the main driver,” he said.

Beyond the economy, Onanuga also addressed recent criticisms levied against the government, particularly the nickname “T-Pain” given to the President by some citizens on social media – to reflect the economic hardship many feel.

Dismiss the moniker, he said: “The President does not read what is in the social media.”

Emphasising that Tinubu was aware of the country’s difficulties, he said “the name holds little weight”.

“The president has never shied away from telling Nigerians that he feels their pain,” Onanuga said, adding that the president is working diligently to bring relief to the nation.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the two leaders “are fully engaged with the nation’s affairs, even while they are away.”

“President Tinubu left the country on 3 October and is on a two-week working vacation. During this time, he has been busy answering phones and issuing directives on matters of state. He will soon return to the country before the vacation officially expires.

“The vice president departed the country Wednesday for Sweden on an official visit, working for Nigeria.

“All state organs are functioning as usual. The Senate President, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ministers, and Service Chiefs are all in their respective positions, ensuring the smooth operation of the government.

“We had a similar situation in 2022 when former President Buhari and former Vice President Osinbajo were found to be simultaneously out of the country. President Buhari attended UNGA 77, while Osinbajo participated in the burial of Queen Elizabeth ll.

“We have also experienced it during this administration. Between late April and early May this year, while President Tinubu was in London, after visiting the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia, where he attended the World Economic Forum, Vice President Shettima left Nigeria, first of all for Nairobi to attend the International Development Association (IDA21) Heads of State Summit.

“After returning, he left for Dallas, Texas, to attend the US-Africa Business Summit organised by the Corporate Council on Africa. President Tinubu returned home on 8 May. During this time, the government’s machinery did not halt.

“The Constitution, a testament to our adaptability in the virtual age, does not explicitly require the physical presence of either the president or the vice president in the country at all times to fulfil his duties.”
