•President Jonathan must reassess his ties to Senator Ali Modu Sheriff

It is often said that eternal vigilance is the price of victory. Given the very serious security challenges currently being confronted by Nigeria, it is surprising that the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan has persistently refused to take this wisdom to heart.

Quite apart from the Federal Government’s inability to rally cross-party support for its anti-terror campaign, increasing disquiet at its dubious arms-procurement processes, as well as the uncertain morale of the armed forces, there are its inexplicably close connections to individuals suspected of contributing significantly to the rise of insurgent groups like Boko Haram.

The most prominent of these links is that between the Jonathan administration and the former governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff. Ever since his defection to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in July, and even before it, Sheriff has been the beneficiary of courtesies and preferential protocol arrangements that would be more appropriate to a sitting head of state.

When Maiduguri Airport was closed in June in response to military directives, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, the governor of Borno State, and 286 pilgrims on their way to perform the lesser Hajj in Mecca were forced to comply. However, the airport was reopened in July for the sole reason of allowing Sheriff’s private jet to land, allegedly to facilitate his intention of declaring for the PDP. Why would the Federal Government override security concerns and extend a courtesy to an ex-governor that it had denied his successor?

Then there is the controversial appearance of Sheriff at a meeting between Presidents Jonathan and his Chadian counterpart, Idris Deby, on September 8. Sheriff was not only in the official Chadian delegation which welcomed Jonathan at the airport, he was also at Deby’s formal reception for Jonathan. Although the president’s media aides have been at pains to stress that Sheriff was not on Nigeria’s official entourage, the fact that he was able to meet the president without any apparent hindrance does not inspire confidence in government’s vaunted attempts to combat Boko Haram.

The latest demonstration of Senator Sheriff’s “most-favoured person” status was the 200-man close protection detail that attended him when he recently visited Maiduguri to pay his condolences to a bereaved friend. This security escort far exceeds that of any governor, and can only be rivalled by that of the president himself. Significantly, Sheriff’s escort comprised soldiers rather than policemen who usually provide security cover for non-military VIPs. In effect, soldiers who could have been employed far more usefully against insurgents were deployed to protect an individual suspected of a major role in the creation and sustenance of the very same insurgents they should have been fighting!

The Jonathan administration must realise that such displays of moral ambivalence are far more disadvantageous to its credibility than any perceived gain. It strengthens growing perceptions that the Federal Government is more interested in manipulating the insurgency than in fighting it. It weakens national resolve to unite against terror. It gives heart to individuals who sponsor terrorism and provide succour for those who perpetrate it. Perhaps most distressing of all, it poisons all aspects of social, political and economic life by destroying trust, ruining nationalist fervour and degrading patriotic obligation.

If indeed the Federal Government is assiduously fighting terrorism, it cannot be seen to be cozying up to individuals like Sheriff, whose innocence in insurgency-related matters is yet to be established. It should expedite the process of thoroughly investigating his activities in order to determine his culpability or otherwise, and in the meantime should seek to distance itself from his like.

Let’s shun corrupt practices – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday urged Nigerians rid the country of all forms of corrupt practices, saying this is a sure way of setting the nation on a path of greatness.

The President made the call at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Annual National Management Conference of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) held in Warri, Delta state.

He said his administration’s Transformation Agenda is aimed at leaving lasting legacies behind.

President Jonathan, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Aviation, Mr. Yemi Adelekun, also charged the NIM to sustain its current drive to ensure professionalism among its practitioners.

He said, ”To set this country on the path of greatness and prosperity, complete elimination of all forms of corrupt practices must be in the front burner of our collective consciousness always.

”The Transformation Agenda, you will agree with me, is a clear demonstration of my administration’s sincere intention to leave a lasting legacy that will be a reference point for subsequent administrations.

Corps member donates N10,000 to President’s re-election bid

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday said that he will continue to count on the support, goodwill and prayers of patriotic Nigerians as he strives to give the best possible leadership for the country.

In a letter to a young Nigerian who sent a donation of N10, 000 as a humble contribution to the President’s re-election bid, President Jonathan said that he was deeply touched and encouraged by the immense support his administration receives from young Nigerians from all parts of the country.

Jonathan, according to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said: “Your gracious gesture is particularly gratifying, coming as it does from one of our nation’s vibrant and gifted youth who are our successor generation and for whom our administration is unequivocally committed to providing the requisite environment to optimally realize their tremendous creative and productive potentials.

“As I carry on with the task of positively transforming our country for its God-ordained greatness and prosperity, I will continue to count on the goodwill as well as the practical and prayerful support of committed patriots like you.”

The President thanked Ezemagu Sunday Nnamdi, who is a youth corps member for the donation which was sent before the Peoples’ Democratic Party adopted him as its sole candidate for the 2015 presidential election.

He also welcomed his expression of faith in the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria for sustained growth and development.

President Jonathan assured Nnamdi and other young Nigerians that he will continue to do his best in the service of the nation in keeping with their trust and expectations.

In the letter forwarding his donation, the corps member assured the President of the continued support of patriotic Nigerians and urged him to seek re-election in 2015.

“Nigerians are behind you. We see your good works in power, transportation, education, housing, ICT, sports, electoral reforms, observation of the principle of federal character and the creation of investment opportunities.

“The insurgents who are trying to destabilize your administration are enemies of peace and progress. You will surely defeat them,” he wrote.

  • ‘Why PDP adopted Jonathan for 2015 election’

‘Why PDP adopted Jonathan for 2015 election’

Fresh facts emerged on Friday on why major stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) adopted President Goodluck Jonathan as their sole candidate for 2015 presidential election.

A PDP chief told our correspondent that the decision was taken after critically reviewing the radical change in the country’s body polity since the advent of a strong opposition party – the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The source who pleaded for anonymity said with APC on board, internal rancour was the last thing PDP needed ahead of the 2015 poll.

He said the PDP stakeholders after analysing the political situation critically were of the opinion that the already existing North-South divide in the party would aggravate if other candidates were allowed to contest against the President in a primary election.

Besides, he said the party leaders gave Jonathan a clean bill of health to enable PDP capitalise on the power of incumbency to retain the Presidency in 2015.

He said a lot of horse trading and lobbying were used to woo persons nursing presidential ambition in the party to support Jonathan.

“We are in an era of strong political opposition and we cannot afford internal rancour ahead of the 2015.

“We discovered that with the APC on board, having a competitive primary will further divide the party and place PDP on the path of losing the Presidency.

“Right now the country especially the North is sharply divided between APC and PDP and we cannot afford to make a mistake that will further reduce our population,” he said.

According to the source, having skipped the hurdle, PDP is united and better prepared to confront APC.

He said PDP was also waiting to benefit from the internal rift that could arise from APC after its primary election.

“There are many political gladiators in APC who are not willing to make sacrifices and take decision on consensus like the PDP.

“The former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar is in the party and he is nursing a presidential ambition. The former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and the Governor Kwankwaso are all there looking for the same Presidential ticket.

“More people will also join the race in APC. None of these can step down for another and we know APC will soon be thrown into crisis because of these presidential ambitions.”

  • PDP NEC adopts Jonathan for 2015 election

PDP NEC adopts Jonathan for 2015 election

... We will end terrorism by mid-October – President

The National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has unanimously adopted President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s sole candidate for the 2015 presidential election.

The decision, which was taken at the party’s NEC meeting in Abuja on Thursday, is expected to be ratified at the party’s national convention billed to hold on December 6.

The NEC is the highest decision making organ of the party.

Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, set the ball rolling when he announced that governors elected on the platform of the party had decided to adopt Jonathan as the party’s sole candidate for the election.

Aliyu said the governors unanimously took the decision without reservation, adding that the decision was informed by the need for the party to go into the 2015 elections with a united front.

Aliyu created a mild drama when he beckoned on the Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, to attest to and identify with the governors’ position.

Lamido, with a broad smile, got up from his seat, nodded in agreement and gave Jonathan a thump up.

Until Thursday, Lamido’s had been the lone voice within the PDP challenging the President’s re-election bid. Judging by his disposition at the meeting, he appeared to have caved in.

The Vice chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Alhaji Shuabu Oyedokun, who stood in for the chairman, spoke on behalf of the trustees.

According to him, the BoT decided to adopt the President for the stability of the party.

President of the Senate, David Mark, who also conveyed the endorsement of the National Assembly caucus of the party, said the legislature preaches and believes in continuity.

Mark informed the gathering that the lawmakers had met and taken a decision on the matter days before.

“It’s a legacy we have decided to lay for the party. He is a sitting and performing President; we should allow him to go ahead. We unanimously adopt him as our sole presidential candidate for the 2015 election.

Mrs. Justina Eze spoke in similar vein on behalf of the party’s women folk, saying the women had also taken the decision in the interest of the party.

Thereafter, a former Acting National chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Haliru Bello Mohammed, moved the motion for the adoption.

He said there was no reason to change a winning formula, adding that the President had performed well enough to deserve a second term.

Former governor of the old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo, who seconded the motion, also said the Jonathan team had done well and deserved a second term. The motion received an overwhelming affirmative voice vote.

Responding, Jonathan expressed appreciation for the adoption, saying he was overwhelmed by the show of support and encouragement by the party members.

“I am so overwhelmed that I lack the words to express my appreciation. For you to have that confidence in me, I will not disappoint you.”

The President there and then gave the assurance that terrorism that is currently ravaging the country, which he described as secession plot, would be brought to an end by mid October.

“Things must change by the middle of October. We will bring terrorism to an end no matter what it takes,” he said emphatically.

He however gave no reasons for the optimism.

2015: Jonathan, PDP caucus meet on party guidelines

President Goodluck Jonathan and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caucus on Tuesday night met on amendments to be made to the party’s guidelines before the 2015 general election.

The new guidelines would be approved at the National Executive Committee meeting slated for Thursday at the party’s National Headquarters in Abuja.

Briefing State House correspondents at the end of the Caucus meeting which ended few minutes to midnight on Tuesday, Delta State Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, said the party’s election guidelines towards 2015 general election dominated discussions at the meeting.

He said: “Most of the discussions were centred on the 2015 elections, that is, preparations of the party for the 2015 elections. There were presentations by the National Working Committee. You know we will have our National Executive Committee meeting on Thursday, and the guidelines for the party were discussed.”

“But most of the decisions will be taken at the NEC meeting on Thursday.”

“What we did here was to brainstorm on certain issues that will be presented at the NEC meeting. So, it is on that Thursday that a several decisions that will guide us for the 2015 elections will be taken.”

In the same vein, Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, said the PDP election guidelines would be tabled before the NEC meeting on Thursday.

On the Caucus meeting, he said: “To take critically look at the guidelines of the party and make amendments that will be passed to NEC next tomorrow.”

Among those present at the Caucus meeting that started at 8.37pm on Tuesday are – Vice President Namadi Sambo; the President of the Senate, Sen. David Mark, and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha.

Others are – the Leader of the Senate, Victor Ndoma-Egba; the Deputy Senate Leader, Abdul Ningi; the PDP Chairman, Adamu Muazu; the Deputy National Chairman, Uche Secondus, and a former PDP Chairman, Ahmadu Ali.

Governors at the meeting are –  Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta), Jonah Jang (Plateau), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom) and Theodore Orji (Abia).

The BoT meeting of the party is expected to hold at the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday night.

  • PDP denies Jonathan, Dickson’s feud

The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said on Wednesday that there was no cold war between the Governor of the state, Mr. Seriake Dickson and President Goodluck Jonathan.

The state Secretary of the Party, Mr. Godspower Keku, said members of the party were united and solidly behind the aspirations of President Jonathan and Dickson.

There have been speculations of frosty relationship between Dickson and the President.

Members of the party were also said to be divided between the two blocs of Abuja-based politicians led by Dame Patience, the wife of President Jonathan and a home-based camp led by Dickson.

But Keku said: “As officials of PDP at the state level, we have never had any problem. There is unity of purpose in the party. PDP has grown to an extent beyond what you think because this is Mr. President’s state.

“There is unity between the Governor and Mr. President. There is unity between the Governor and the people of the state.

“All the projects are all around that is why the party is growing. There is no problem within the party. There is no problem and there shall never be any problem.”

Keku denied the existence of Abuja-based politicians, insisting that party members were working together to move the state forward.

  • Nigerians will support Jonathan’s 2015 bid – Maku

Nigerians will support Jonathan’s 2015 bid – Maku

The Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, said on Thursday that President Goodluck Jonathan would get up to 95 per cent of votes from Nasarawa State in the 2015 presidential election.

Maku made this known to journalists after Peoples’ Democratic Party’s stakeholders’ consultative forum in Akwanga, Nassarawa State.

He said that Jonathan had immensely improved the lot of the state by establishing a university in the state, a Central Bank building, Court of Appeal, Federal Secretariat, roads and bridges.

“If you look at what is happening in Nigeria today, there is no reason for the people of Nigeria not to rise in support of Mr. President.

“If you look at what this President has done in Nassarawa State, in 2015 the president should expect 95 per cent of the votes in the presidential election in Nassarawa State.

“As you have seen here, the youth are saying it must be Goodluck, the women are saying it must be Goodluck, the elders are saying it must be Goodluck.

“It is clear to every Nigerian that if election is conducted today, the President will take 70 per cent of the votes in the south, what we saw in Ibadan was very clear,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the minister as saying at the forum.

He said the people of the state had insisted that rotation of the presidency was usually after eight years and as such, Mr. President must be supported to complete the remaining four-year term of the South-South.

Maku said the South-South had never ruled the nation before even though that region is the main source of the nation’s wealth, adding that power would return to the north by 2019.

He said that sitting president or governors should not be compelled to go for party primaries, but should emerge automatically as consensus candidates.

  • Jonathan denies taking Sheriff to Chad

Jonathan denies taking Sheriff to Chad

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday denied the allegation that he took the former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, to Chad.

Sherif has been named as one of the sponsors of the Boko Haram sect. He is being investigated in order to know the true position.

The former governor was spotted with President Jonathan when he held talks with the Chadian President, Idriss Deby, in N’Djamena on Tuesday.

But briefing State House correspondents, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Dr. Reuben Abati, said that Sheriff was not on the President’s delegation to Chad.

He said, “We have noted with surprise, the unnecessary hue and cry raised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other bigoted critics of the Jonathan administration over the claim that the President is “hobnobbing” with the former governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, who was recently accused by the Australian, Stephen Davis of being one of the chief sponsors of the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

“The totally erroneous basis for that charge was the spurious claim that Senator Sheriff accompanied President Jonathan on his recent trip to N’Djamena as a member of his entourage.”

“Although Senator Sheriff himself has already given the lie to that claim through his Media Adviser, the Presidency wishes to affirm, for the purpose of emphasis, that the former Borno State governor was not on President Jonathan’s delegation to Chad.”

He went on: “In keeping with President Jonathan’s commitment to transparency and openness in the conduct of government business, names of the key members of his delegation were announced a day before his trip to N’Djamena.

“They included the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), the Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed and the Director-General of National Space Research and Development Agency, Prof. Seidu Mohammed.”

“As can be easily verified from the complete list of members of the Presidential entourage to Chad which was also circulated on Sunday and never changed, Senator Sheriff’s name was not on it. The only other persons on the list were the President’s aides, security personnel and journalists.

“The APC and others who rushed to condemn President Jonathan for a non-existent indiscretion would have found, if they took the least trouble to double-check, that there was absolutely no factual basis for their accusation.

“Those who associate with Senator Sheriff know that he has longstanding interests in Chad and often spends a lot of his time there.

He explained that Sheriff happened to be in N’Djamena at the time of President Jonathan’s visit and joined other Nigerian residents of the Chadian capital in coming to the airport to welcome their President.

  • Jonathan seeks more African participation in digital revolution

Jonathan seeks more African participation in digital revolution

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday in Ndjamena called on all African countries to become more active participants in the digital revolution going on across the world.

Jonathan made the call at an international conference on information and communications technology held in the Chadian capital.

Because of the strong correlation between the efficient deployment of ICTs and socio-economic development, he said that Nigeria and other African countries stand to gain a lot from the effective adoption of the new technologies.

He said: “Africa and Africans must be active participants in the digital revolution that is taking place all around the world.  We must in fact be at the forefront of that revolution, creating information societies and knowledge based economies.

“African governments must facilitate and support the deployment of the necessary ICT infrastructure required to connect our citizens to each other and the rest of the world. We need to educate our citizens on ICTs and make them digitally literate so they can actively participate in this revolution. We need to encourage the development of our local ICT industries, creating companies to drive added domestic economic value, create jobs and support sustainable growth in GDP.”
