Jonathan pays surprise visit to troops in Adamawa

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday paid surprise visit to troops in Adamawa, who have been battling the Boko Haram insurgents.

The President reportedly landed at the Yola International Airport at about 11:00am and boarded a helicopter and went off into the hinterland.

Those on the President’s entourage included the service chiefs, the State Governor, James Ngilari, and the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd).

It was gathered that the President and his entourage landed at the 115 battalion Army barracks in Mubi before they were driven to pay a courtesy call on the Emir of Mubi, Alhaji Abubakar Isah Ahmadu.

After private talks with the Emir, the President and the Service Chief visited the home village of the Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh and later flew back to Yola on their way to Abuja.

Adamawa is one of the states in the northeast affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.

Some of the local government areas in the state recaptured from Boko Haram are – Maiha, Mubi South, Mubi North, Hong Gombi and Michika while soldiers are battling to reclaim Madagali.

The President’s visit is therefore seen as a morale booster for the soldiers.

He had also recently paid similar visit to troops in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

  • Elections can’t be won through propaganda – Jonathan

Elections can’t be won through propaganda – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday night declared that it would be impossible for elections to be won by the opposition movement through propaganda.

He spoke through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, during the Presidential Dinner organized in his honour by the University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association.

Jonathan, who was a member of the university pioneer class of 81, could not attend the dinner as he was reportedly weighed down by Tuesday’s suicide blasts in Kano and Yobe.

The President said his administration created room for the opposition movement to exist as a deliberate attempt to deepen democracy in the country.

He said: “Unlike what many people thought, you know when the opposition tries to make so much noise, one thing we know is that you cannot win elections in Nigeria through propaganda.”

According to the President, his objective in politics was not to remain perpetually in power but to expand the political atmosphere for wider participation.

“We created the political opposition movement. The opposition movements owe their existence and activities to our administration. I can assure you that we are determined to deliver the dividends of fundamentals of democracy in Nigeria,’’ he stated.

He also maintained that neither the ruling Peoples Democratic Party nor the administration is scared about the rising opposition movement in the country.

Jonathan set to inaugurate Kashimbila dam next month

President Goodluck Jonathan will commission the Kashimbila multipurpose dam next month, the Director, Dams and Reservoirs, Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Mr. Reginald Ikpeawujo, has said.

The Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe had told reporters last year during an inspection visit to the dam that the dam would be commissioned in the first week of February.

However, Mr. Ikpeawujo, during an interview with The Nation, explained that the President was unavailable due to his electioneering campaigns.

He said that the dam and hydropower project in Taraba State was the largest of all the dams in the country with the capacity to produce 40 megawatts of electricity, provide irrigation for 2,000 hectares of land and water for about 40,000 people.

Mr. Ikpeawujo said: “Kashimbila is ready for commissioning. The dam and the hydro power are ready. You know it is a multipurpose dam. We have requested for the presence of Mr. President for the commissioning. I think this March; the (President Jonathan) has assured us that he will come.”

He also said the government has completed 13 dams across the country.

The director explained that the 13 dams, when operational, would provide jobs for no fewer than 233, 381 Nigerians and boost dry season farming.

According to him, the federal government has spent hug some of money to complete all ongoing dams in the country.

  • Open Letter to President Jonathan

My dear President, it’s with a very heavy heart that I’m writing this letter to you. Sir, whether you are re-elected in the coming Presidential Election rescheduled for March or rejected by the same Nigerians, who massively voted for you in 2011, there is no way the history of Nigeria would be written without a mention of your name on the list of honours. Like an adage says:  ”A good beginning or good ending, only the middle will mend itself,” seems best for a time like this.

You had a good beginning with Nigerians and that was why we stood with you, despite your ‘shoeless’ background; and, like everyone destined to the top, you became the acting President and in 2011, you were elected by nearly all Nigerians wishing for ‘a poor boy’ to become the President. Today, things may not be the same, but, I am strongly persuaded that you can still have a good ending if you allow the current electoral process to go on according to the will of the people. I’m confident that if you so do, whatever misgivings anyone has (and there will always be) against you during the period you served would be taken care of by your act of courage, genuine and evident commitment to fatherland.

ýThis letter is intended to among others, remind you that before now, God had given some other Nigerians opportunities to lead and, like you, and depending on how they used that office, we either celebrated or mourned their exit. Remember, men like the late maximum ruler, Sani Abacha. Today, no public relations efforts will erase the jubilations across the length and breadth of Nigeria at his demise. He ruled for nine years, but the man who took over from him, the gentle AbdulSalam Abubakar, who spent only few months in office, is seen as a hero. He knew this nation does not belong to an individual or group; but to all of us and whoever we have chosen to lead us, must align with the will, wishes and desires of the generality of all of us.

Ibrahim Babangida, (IBB), as he is fondly called, also had his chance to lead us, but because of the way he handled the fate of Nigeria, he is today saddled with the hard task of selling his ideals to Nigerians again. It is sad but the truth is that Nigerians find it difficult to believe and accept him. He acquired an uncomplimentary pitiable nickname, Maradona simply because of his unprecedented inconsistency.

What of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo? He was able to come back as President after he first served as military ruler, simply because he did what the people wanted in his first outing. Nigerians will not forget in a hurry how he almost succumbed to the temptation of Third Term; a move that would have terribly dented his hard-earned reputation. But like all great leaders, he sensed the danger signals of subverting the will of the people and humbly let Nigerians have their way. Today, not only is Nigeria standing when he talks, but African countries as a whole.

In Africa, the picture of Hosni Mubarak, the former President of Egypt, once deified in the political and military history of Egypt, but today treated with little respect and wheeled to court in the most cruel of manner, to face charges of wickedness and corruption, holds sad memories. Often paraded in cage before a court of law, his, is enough lesson to anyone who wants to have his way, like it or not.

These are a few frightening examples nobody, not even an enemy, can wish for a president, who once had ‘no shoes’, but today, has more than enough to serve him for a life time, just because he suddenly sees himself as above the same people who gave him their votes in trust a few years ago. No! I reject it for you; even if you are already thinking of taking a walk on this dangerous path.

I know you have many Bishops and pastors as friends; and have even visited many of them recently. I can guess correctly, too, that they have prayed and probably are still praying for you; and told you nice things any leader would love to hear, but, I want to appeal to your conscience. Nobody wears your conscience; not the pastors or your hordes of aides at Aso Rock or even all those who beat war drums ‘for your sake’ in your home town.  History, when it will be written, will surely not lump you together with them since they were not directly in charge of Nigeria, but, you, alone.

Therefore, my prayer is that you end well; not as meat to the dogs of war as was the case of Samuel Doe, former President of Liberia, former dictator and Libya’s leader, Colonel Ghadaffi or Sadam Hussein; all of who had opportunities to act right and live, but yielded to the lure of office to their peril. Today, the entire world has moved on with their aides, some of whom refused to let them see danger signals, finding new vocations in other governments.

I wonder if it has ever crossed your mind why Nigerians would still want a “performing” President out sharp sharp as shown in the six online polls conducted by Nigerians, two of which were done by your aide and the African Independent Television (AIT) whose owner is probably a card-carrying member of your party.  Have you ever thought why Nigerians are still angry at your government though you say you created over one million jobs? Couldn’t they have shown understanding and trust you to create more jobs when re-elected? ý

It is probably your lack of understanding of the situation of things that has driven Nigerians to want to support an erstwhile dictator rather than, forgive me sir, have a failed leader as they often refer to you behind closed doors. Really, who dares call you that to your face?  For every five Nigerians, four agree that you fanned corruption with everything within you. They point to the pardon you granted to Chief Dieprieye Alamieseigha, your former boss to the point of handing him ticket to run for Senate in your state.  Others point to the Pensions scam, the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) scandal, the money-in-a-South African-bound flight and the several reports of probes gathering dust as the days go by in your cupboard.

Truth is, Nigerians crave a leader they can trust; one with a strong character that transcends ethnic and religious chauvinism. Never forget that your arithmetic of 16 being greater than 19 during the election of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum; suspension of Emir Lamido Sanusi and your elevation of people either indicted or going through trial for corruption are some of your major albatrosses.

Hope is not lost though things look hopeless. The opportunity to change things for the better and make history are still available. That opportunity will come on March 28. How the election is organized; who is used and how your men and the military comport themselves during and after the election, will go a long way in changing the perception of Nigerians about you.  If, as most Nigerians fear, you deploy the military to advantage during the election, you can be sure where you will stand in history. But more than anything else, the reactions that will trail the election will point to how well you have prepared to let the people see you.

  • PRESIDENT JONATHAN Provide language laboratories in schools

PRESIDENT JONATHAN Provide language laboratories in schools

Our official language in Nigeria is English. But our governments, both at the state and federal levels, are not doing much to improve the standard of the language.

Backup_of_42 WriteUrReps 21-02-2015OK.Our students cannot write well. Most of our graduates are incapable of expressing themselves in standard English. They lack basic rules guiding the use of the language.

As a teacher, I advise the state and federal governments to put language laboratories in place in all primary and secondary schools in the country.

If this is done, the standard of English in the country will considerably improve.

  • Open letter to President Jonathan

IR: Dear President, please pardon me for writing you at this tense political moment in our country history, a time when you have serious political campaigning to do. Obviously this is not the best time to write this kind of letter but I feel compelled to write after the postponement of the general elections and the backlash that followed.

In 2010, we watched you do your thing as leader of our republic; and as has been the reality over the past five years of your rule, there are as many people singing your praises as there were those excoriating you for all that is not right with our beloved country. We have been listening to speech after speech from you where you invariably promise us a better life, better leadership, corruption-busting, jobs, a better economy, freedom, justice and a “new” Nigeria where young people can aspire and prosper.

Indeed, our hopes as Nigerians are that we would finally get to have a feel of the good life during your administration, and not endure the pain and indignity of watching our relatives, friends and acquaintances living in other countries doing well and showing off to us. Among other things we hoped for after your historic election in 2011 were: fixing the potholes on our roads, constant electricity supply your promised would be achieved within a few years, among others.

But you failed to meet our aspiration and the pain of the populace has become unbearable, making your departure through the ballot box almost a certainty. But you should leave honourably instead of trying to buy time by postponing the election. The postponement will do you no favour; surely. If the army could not defeat the insurgents in six years, then only a fool would believe six weeks extension will be the answer. Even the super powers have not defeated any kind of rebellion in six weeks.

Dear President, we all remember how you promised to create job opportunities for Nigerians. What you rather did was sending our beloved graduates to their early graves. The immigration recruitment tragedy is something that I will never forget, and the families of the departed souls can’t wait to avenge their loss through the ballot box come March 28. You may want to know that many of my colleagues who graduated same year you were elected president are still unemployed, and they have also failed to secure loans to start their own businesses. Their percentage on the total numbers of eligible voters may be small, but they have resolved to ensure it makes the needed difference come March 28.

Rightly or wrongly, many people see you as the catalyst behind their success or failure, and I understand it could be difficult carrying the burden of having to make the wishes of over 170 million people come true. I do not have much to ask, but that you keep your promise of handing over come May 29, if you lose the election. Our desire is to try something new, something different from the PDP. And no amount of bribery can stop it; we need to save the future of our children and that of the unborn generation.

All eyes are on you this year, as they have been for the past five years, hoping that we finally say goodbye to your government that has brought us so many agonizing and painful experiences; we have had enough of impunity, fake promises, insecurity, and unemployment that has become the trademark of your administration.

  • PRESIDENT JONATHAN Repair Kabba-Obajana Road

I AM appealing to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and Senator Smart Adeyemi to do something about the Kabba-Obajana Road.

The road is not good at all. It is full of potholes and craters. Many Nigerians have lost their lives in the course of travelling on it.

Why am I appealing to both the president and the senator, representing the area at the same time? This is a busy time for the president, and he will not have time for us. But the senator is less busy. He will still have time to put pressure on the president to do our wish.

I am expecting work on the road soon.

    Emmanuel Rotimi,

    Kabba, Kogi State.

  • Jonathan launches three security documents

To check terrorism and cyber crimes in the country, President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday launched three national security documents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The three documents presented by the office of the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, are National Security Strategy, Counter Terrorism Strategy and Cyber Security Plan and Strategy.
He directed all security agencies to adopt the principles enshrined in the documents.

He said, “Today the foremost threat facing us is clearly the terrorism perpetrated by the Boko Harram, the radical Islamic sect, in its bid to further its misguided cause. This cowardly group has continued in wanton disruption of lives and property particularly in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States.

“Boko Haram has systematically targeted the poor and the wealthy, it has employed violence to intimidate and instill fear to the general populace and media propaganda to manipulate the minds of our people.

“The sect, its supporters and allies, seek to undermine our national security. They neither believe in our country nor the sanctity of human lives. The counter terrorism strategy document is a major contribution to our determined national efforts to effectively and comprehensively deal with the challenges posed by Boko Haram and other insurgency groups.”

The President noted that the Maitatsine attack of 1982 was not on the same scale with that of Boko Haram.

According to him, public private sector partnership, multi stakeholder engagement and international cooperation were three key approaches to a successful national cyber security programme.

He called for cooperation among stakeholders to eliminate the security threats.

The President said that the three publications would be of immense benefits to the business community and all in communication.

  • Jonathan assures on $16b Delta gas city

President Goodluck Jonathan has pledged to complete the $16 billion gas city project before the end of his second tenure in office.

According to the President, the gas city project was very important to Nigeria as it will generate several employment opportunities for the youths, while the country’s economy would get a boost from the investments from foreigners and Nigerians.

Jonathan, who was addressing members of the Delta State traditional council shortly after a presidential campaign rally in Asaba, said the gas city project which would be the biggest oil and gas investment in Africa was very important to his administration.

He stated that the project would be flagged off in the next couple of weeks and appealed to the traditional rulers not to relent in their support for his administration.

President Jonathan informed the traditional rulers that he was seeking re-election as the country’s President to complete the projects that his administration initiated for the benefit of the country.

The Obi of Owa, HRM Efeizomor II, who spoke on behalf of the traditional rulers, described President Jonathan as a performer whose projects have transformed the lives of Nigerians and repositioned Nigeria for faster economic growth.

  • Benin monarch to Jonathan: God’s choice is our own

Benin Monarch, Oba Erediauwa, on Thursday stated that the people of Benin would accept whoever God picks to lead the country after the presidential election.

Oba Erediauwa, who spoke when President Goodluck Jonathan visited his Palace as part of his campaign rally, said the ancestors and God know who would be the next president.

The monarch who was represented by the Iyase of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe, called for peaceful elections and campaigns.

He said, “God and our ancestors already know your (President Jonathan) aims, whoever God has chosen is our choice.”

President Jonathan praised the Oba and his chiefs for sustaining peace in the country.

The President said he was at the palace to inform the monarch of his presence in Benin for the presidential rally.
