  • APA to Buhari: don’t forget your promise to run inclusive govt

The Vice Presidential candidate of the African People’s Alliance (APA), Prince Adesoji Adeleke Masilo, has reminded President Mohammadu Buhari not to forget his campaign promise to run an all-inclusive government.

Advising him not see his victory as a “winner takes all,” he said he must live up to his promise to give appointments to members of other political parties, particularly those that supported him and the All Progressives Congress to achieve victory.

Masilo, who commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in a statement made available to The Nation, for conducting free, fair and credible general elections, said the military and the legal profession backgrounds of Buhari and Osinbajo, will help Nigeria overcome insecurity and imbibe democratic values.

According to him, the re-election of the President Mohammadu Buhari and his vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, is a perfect combination for the nation’s solid foundation for good governance.

He expressed confidence in all candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) recently elected during the February and March general elections, including the governors-elect, to support the Buhari/Osinbajo administration in taking the nation out of the woods.

He said: “President Buhari’s background in the military and that of his vice, Osinbajo, in the legal profession will help the nation’s re-establish discipline and respect for human dignity long lost in this nation. Both of them, no doubt, will give us necessary development, dividends of democracy and also take us to the next level.”

Masilo commended INEC for “technically sorting out issues in very critical and volatile states, where there had been established electoral infractions.”

  • Will Buhari sit on his hands once again?

FOR the life of me, I want to believe that the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Affairs, Senator Ita Enang, was merely playing to the gallery when he reportedly expressed his principal’s unwillingness to play any crucial role in the process leading to the emergence of a new leadership for the incoming 9th Assembly. It is either the ex-lawmaker was speaking for himself without the mandate of Aso Rock or he is the proverbial fifth columnist parading the corridors of power. Ita Enang, in case he actually wants us to believe this joke, must have taken us for a fool. I would have labeled him the crooked firewood that spoils the broth. But I doubt if that was the intention of this fine gentleman. How on earth would President Muhammadu Buhari – knowing the magnitude of after-effects that followed his inaction and the surprise emergence of a scheming Sarako in 2015 – now sit on his hands and allow those characters in the legislature to berth another calamitous treachery that would further inflict irreparable damage on his ailing government? For, if we must say the obvious truth, that was exactly the leeway that a gang of selfish bandits exploited to invade and hijack the 8th National Assembly and then, force a twist in the tale of the executive/legislature relationship that proved deadly for the ruling All Progressives Congress which then found itself dining on the same table with its worst foes.

Listen to Enang spewing hollow patter: “The principle of President Buhari is that each arm of government should function according to what the Constitution says which is that every person in government should do the right thing. He will not go beyond what the constitution allows him and every arm of government should stick to its responsibilities.”

Now that is pure balderdash and Enang, a serial winner of the House of Representatives’ ticket from his Akwa Ibom State Senatorial district before his emergence as Senator, should know this for a fact. Yes, due respect must be given to the principles of separation of power as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution. But nothing stops the leadership of a ruling party to take steps that would help it in the smooth implementation of policies by having the right persons in key positions in a critical arm like the highest law-making body in the land. It is called lobbying in other democracies and it is legal. It doesn’t have to come through the force of state power but it can be orchestrated through persuasion and appeal to commonsense. What makes democracy tick, by the way, is not the absence of conflict or divergence of opinions. Instead, it is the synergy that exists among the various arms that often disagree to agree or, sometimes agree to disagree. And if I may ask, how many of such did we see in practice in the present dispensation under the adversarial leadership of a certain Senator Bukola Saraki and his counterpart in the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara?

Yoked under the burden of a putrefying and choking air of mutual distrust, the Buhari administration’s faltering steps started manifesting immediately the Saraki/Dogara legislative coup was hatched. Of course, it was not helped by the fact that Saraki had to concede the seat of the Deputy Senate President to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party despite the fact that the APC had the upper hand in terms of number. It was a complete sell out. A shambolic one at that. In his confessional statement afterwards, Saraki, I remember, revealed certain details that suggested that he was ready to damn the consequence in his vaunting ambition to become the President of the Senate. He said he slept in one of the rickety cars in the National Assembly car lot and sneaked into the chambers whilst some of his party loyalists had gone to the International Conference Centre to attend a meeting summoned by Buhari and the APC leadership with the aim of reaching a concrete agreement on the candidates for the positions. The meeting had barely started before news filtered in that this gang of coup plotters had hatched the most treacherous trick on everyone. At that point, Buhari had no option than to succumb to the blackmail, waxing lyrical about his preparedness to work with whatever political miscalculations emanated from the Saraki coup. Well, it turned out to be the biggest mistake of his life and we are all living witnesses to that misjudgment by this neophyte in politics!

Should Buhari allow thunder to strike him twice by sitting idle while another band of self-conceited sadists is allowed to seize the gavel of legislative impunity, the joke would be on him this time. There should be a limit to how one wrings one’s hands in stupefaction amid the rot in a broken nation. Buhari and the party oligarch should rein in the errant irritants in their fold. Nigeria cannot afford another four years of executive/legislative feud in which sheer ego defines the currency of political cum economic decision making process. Let me, for emphasis sake, crave your indulgence to rehash some paragraphs from an earlier piece titled “The emergence of Saraki, Dogara and the Buhari Presidency” which was published on June 2015. The short piece forecasts the grim realities that awaited the Buhari administration and most of the things did come to pass.

“Of course, there is no denying the fact that egos have been bruised on both sides of the divide and it would take a lot of political maturity and understanding to weave a web of unity round the betrayal. As things stand today, the task before President Buhari is how to put into practical reality his promise to work with any leadership put in place by the lawmakers without his interference. He must realise that he is now being described in some quarters as “ baba go slow”, equating him with a one- time governor of Lagos state, late Chief Michael Otedola whose administration was criticized for its tardiness and inaction. Almost two weeks after his inauguration, he is yet to appoint key officials like Secretary to the Government, Chief of Staff, Political Adviser, nor has he given any clear direction of where he is headed.

“Nigerians are yearning for action, they are tired of promises. The President would also need to mend the broken walls within his party if he must prevent an anticipated encroachment by the PDP which now wields enormous influence in the legislature and may make his work difficult if it so wishes. Being a coalition of strange bedfellows, the APC leadership should not delude itself that it has the overriding power over the NASS leadership as presently constituted. If anything, it should be at the forefront of calming frayed nerves by accepting the choices made by the lawmakers in a democratic setting. Doing anything contrary to this may throw the party into further crisis or even decimate its membership. Since Buhari has declared his intention to work harmoniously with any leadership that emerged, the party needs to respect that decision in order to foster democratic values.”

Well, we all know how things played out and the consequences of the President’s action and inaction then.  Besides, Buhari cannot afford to sit on the fence and allow some powerful forces to foist a leadership on the National Assembly that could jeopardise the unwritten code of geo-political balancing that is needed for justice and equity. Would he, for example, be comfortable with a legislature whose leadership is picked solely from his geo-political zone all in the guise of non-interference in the affairs of the legislature? Does he know that a region like the South-South deserves to be compensated with a key position in the Senate having been denied of any such privilege since this democratic journey began on May 29, 2019? And does he know that these things matter because our brand of home-grown democracy survives on this unwritten code of delicate balancing? How then can Enang be speaking for a man whose fingers were almost burnt beyond recognition some years back for daring to dine with enemies within? How? Must leaders fail to learn from history and thereby run the people they lead into a ditch or cul-de-sac one more time, causing regrets for all?

  • NIPCAC to lift economy with tax credit scheme

The Nigeria Industrial Policy and Competitiveness Advisory Council (NIPCAC) will rely on the Federal Government’s   Executive Order 007 2019 signed by President Mohammadu Buhari to implement Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme.

The scheme will help the Federal Government leverage private sector funding for the construction or refurbishment of roads.

It also focuses on the development of eligible road infrastructure projects in an efficient and effective manner that creates value for money through private sector discipline; and guarantees participants in the scheme timely and full recovery of funds provided for the construction or refurbishment of eligible road infrastructure projects through tax credits.

This Executive Order is one of the initiatives midwifed by the Policy and Regulation Subcommittee of the Industrial Council, which is focused on implementing initiatives to incentivise investment; and reduce smuggling.

It is an initiative which time has come because as industrialists in the Council expressed their willingness to intervene in road rehabilitation and construction in their areas of operation in a through a transparent process that ensures the cost of construction/rehabilitation can be recouped, the Federal Ministry of Finance had conceived the idea. It promptly proposed the scheme for the Industrial Council to develop.

The Scheme is widely viewed by stakeholders who have been engaged in the public and private sectors as a quick-win in road construction and enjoys wide-spread acceptance as a means of accelerating growth within industrial clusters.

In the pilot phase, six companies will construct 19 roads covering 794.4km. The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, who listed the roads at the signing ceremony said the scheme is the outcome of efforts to think outside of the box and deploy new techniques to develop critical road infrastructure in the country.

The six companies to construct the 19 road projects for the pilot phase, totaling 794.4km in 11 states across each of the six geo-political zones, are Dangote Industries Limited; Lafarge Africa Plc; Unilever Nigeria Plc; Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc among others.

  • Details of loots will alarm Nigerians -Rep

A member of the House of Representatives, Ehiozuwa Agbonnayima, has said that Nigerians would be alarmed with details of loot if released by President Mohammadu Buhari.

Agbonayima, a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for Ikpoba-Okha/Egor Constituency in the House, stated this in an interview with newsmen in Benin on Monday.

He said Nigerians would be so alarmed that they would want to kill some of the looters.

Agbonnayima said it was worrisome that Nigerians failed to realise that it was not Buhari that stole their money.

He said those fighting against Buhari’s re-election were doing so because their oil wells licenses would not be renewed.

He alleged that there were some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in Buhari’s cabinet that do not want him to succeed because the credit would go to the ruling APC.

Agbonnayima disclosed that a foreign lawyer engaged by the Nigeria government told him that some Nigerian lawyers engaged by same government were working against their own country to sabotage the return of stolen fund.

According to him, this election is about development. If Buhari decides to release names of looters, Nigerians will want to kill them.
“The U.S. gave us comprehensive details of the crude oil that left the country illegally.

“We invited the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and they brought bags full of evidence. In all those documents from the NNPC, there was no record of any oil transaction being taken to the U.S.

“It was as if nothing left the country but the U.S., Custom gave us what landed through the Port of Houston.

“We have documents of who brought the oil, who bought it and the bank through which the money was paid.

“Former Vice President Abubakar Atiku should tell Nigerians the business he has done. He has only been a custom officer and Vice President of the country.

“He said he is an investor but he took INTEL that belonged to Nigerians. Congressman Jefferson has been jailed in the U.S. and the document the U.S. Attorney General sent to former President Olusegun Obasanjo to investigate Atiku is there,” he said.

Agbonnayima added:”Who committed same crime with Jefferson want to become president whereas his accomplice has been jailed. We must shine our eyes.

“I do not think I have an opponent. Go and look at my last antecedent. Let them bring their records if they really care about the people.

“I am in APC because Buhari is not corrupt. That is the simple reason I stand with Buhari,” he said.(NAN)

  • Of unruly and shameless legislators

You would not but wonder how we come to have these types for leaders.

President Mohammadu Buhari this past week, once again demonstrated why, whether amongst his rambunctious or supine predecessors, or among the indistinguishable assortment of humanity now ogling his office, he will always be the pick of thinking Nigerians who, happily, are in the majority in this country today.

After continuously running helter skelter, adjourning the business of the legislative branch out of a fear of being swept off their giddy offices, our legislators finally came back few weeks ago and were scheduled to receive the 2019 budget from the President at a joint sitting of the two chambers, which happened in a most riotous fashion on Wednesday, 19 December, 2018.

    Thank God for little mercies.

Nobody who knows former President Olusegun Obasanjo or his deputy, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, well enough, could have doubted that neither would have tolerated the jeering, the idiocy and the outright rudeness which were targeted at the President as he attempted to perform that solemn constitutional function.

Of course, suffused with tree climbers and sundry liars, and given that  the days of Ghana Must Go bags, full of freshly minted U. S dollars in exchange for budget passage were long gone,  now permanently buried in the bowels of history , their shameful behaviour was not totally unexpected.

But in the days of yore, if Atiku could at all be restrained, there was no way you could have stopped his boss from planting his palms on the cheeks of cheeky legislators like Diri Duoye (Bayelsa, PDP), Johnbull Shekarau (Plateau, PDP), Boma Goodhead (Rivers, PDP), Kingsley Chinda (Rivers PDP) and Chukwuka Onyema (Anambra, PDP), to mention only a few of the jeering gang.

But not so Buhari who you would never see fight the piggy fight.

As The Nation emphasised in its analysis of the thoroughly shameful event: “Buhari stood before them in honour and dignity of an anti-corruption crusader, a reformist and ‘no-to-business-as usual’ leader. He was kingly as he towered above his tormentors and noisemakers, not only in height, but also in responsibility” and, of course, decency. But the pungent analysis was not done as it continued: “National Assembly was a House of Babel yesterday. Decorum was sacrificed on the altar of partisanship. President Muhammadu Buhari and the nation were embarrassed. The parliament became a laughing stock. The legislative/executive feud assumed a new dimension. Hope of cordial relations dimmed. Nigerians were taken aback. Many observers asked in bewilderment: is the Senate and House of Representatives worthy of national pride? His message was ignored, not because it lacked potency. The budget speech fell on deaf ears of many legislators, who may be acting a script. (undoubtedly,  a Dubai pre-planned  conspiracy or isn’t  Saraki Atiku’s campaign Director –General  wanting  anything to embarrass Buhari as if such rascality is capable of winning election) The President’s remarks were interrupted. Some lawmakers were shouting on top of their voices, to the consternation of constituents who viewed the unruly behaviour on television. As President Buhari reeled out his achievements across the sectors, shouts of “no, no no” and “lie, lie lie” filled the air. For the president, it was a test of emotional stability. President Buhari kept his cool. But, as the irritation persisted, he urged calm. As a statesman, he patiently cautioned the unrepentant legislators. “May I appeal to the honourable members that the world is watching us…we are supposed to be above this.” When they would not listen, he added: “You are only messing up yourselves.” A thoroughly well deserved spanking of the unruly adults.

Rather than take part in their un-parliamentary behaviour, the president became a preacher of sorts; a moral force and an exemplar, bringing back to their senses, those unruly few who did not realise they were being captured  live by the international media.

You would not but wonder how we come to have these types for leaders. But you do not wonder for too long. Blame Saraki, Atiku etal who plotted the crisis in the Senate from day one. The unfeeling legislature continues to treat its striking workers with disdain even  when they  haul home about N14M monthly  while all  their miserable workers ask for is a  mere pittance, a small fraction  of their wardrobe allowance. It even got so bad one of them who is in jail, carted home over N80M as allowances in the six months since being jailed. Their response to that reprehensible act has been nothing short of sabre rattling. I hope the Attorney –General would  immediately put in place the process of recovering that  humongous amount of money and making everybody complicit, no matter how seemingly important, answerable.

But far worse is the fact that Saraki has since gone lyrical, lecturing Nigerians you would think he just came back from Harvard Business School. Hear the aspiring ‘Nobel Laureate’ in chicanery:

“The last three-and-a-half years have been eventful ones at the global level and in our domestic economy. From dips in oil prices to major shifts in the economic landscape, crude oil production shut-ins and security challenges, the economy and Nigerians have been directly impacted by these events.

“Many businesses closed down and many people lost their jobs during the recent recession. In the same period, we lost innocent citizens to the insurgency in parts of the North East, thousands were displaced, and many lives also lost due to clashes between farmers and herders, in addition to the general hardship unleashed by unstable economic winds.

“The recovery from the recession is still fragile. The fundamentals underlying the recovery remain weak, and if unchecked, can lead to dire consequences. The economy still runs on oil and very little progress has been made in terms of diversification.

“As a result, the expansionary budget policy in effect since 2016, which was aimed at raising spending and stimulating growth in the economy, was not matched by achievable revenue targets. The corollary is a higher and rising deficit as well as a considerable debt burden, all due to an unsustainable fiscal stance.

“The under-performance of independent revenues is straining government’s ability to meet its expenditure, especially investments in critical infrastructure. This further exposes the government to higher deficit levels which have been largely financed by borrowing.”

Not anywhere in this lengthy thesis would you see him mention anything about a N3.5 billion allegedly laundered from the Paris Club Loan Refund by elements who are no state actors and you wonder how this came through their ever itchy fingers, ordering hundreds of thousands dollar jewellery from Dubai but yet having the Godlessness to talk about poverty in Nigeria. Neither  were we regaled with anything pertaining to  the bloodiest ever bank robbery in Nigeria which saw 33 Nigerians murdered  in cold blood by blood hounds who have since allegedly implicated Mr Lecturer as their armourer. When did the wise saying that you should first remove the log in your eyes before helping to remove the spec in another’s eyes go out of fashion?

Here is the most perfidious party man ever who thought nothing of selling off his party and thus set off the most intractable executive-legislative disharmony ever in Nigeria. Were Saraki wise, or given to introspection, he should by now be on his knees, begging God for forgiveness, and pleading with Nigerians for pardon.

One only hopes he will one day, sooner or later, come to the realisation of his heinous crime against fatherland.

  • OUR LIVES IN DANGER!

    • Residents of Anambra community cry out after invasion by hoodlums
    • Send SOS to Buhari, Obiano

For the people of Ubaru, Igbariam community, Anambra East Local Government Area, Anambra State, their bond of unity has broken and things have fallen apart. The situation is such that the residents have petitioned President Mohammadu Buhari and the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, to save them from the hoodlums in the area.

Their cry to the federal and state governments came as a result of the mayhem unleashed in the community by some hoodlums on Friday last week when no fewer than eight buildings were destroyed in a midnight attack.

The arrest of 84-year-old Michael Ezike and 18 others by security agents has also heightened tension in the community.

Following the destruction that took place in the village, more than 100 residents have relocated to neighbouring communities and other states in the country for fear of being harmed.

The buildings destroyed included that of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture in Anambra State, Dr. Edwin Ezinando.

Since the crisis erupted, the area has become a ghost town, while the residents now live in fear of the unknown.

The Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, Haruna Mohammed, said the arrests made in the community were not carried out by the state command

He also said the police command was not aware of the matter and, therefore, would not speak on it.

The Nation gathered that the police command had deployed enough security in the community to avoid further break down of law and order, despite the command’s claim that it is not aware of the crisis.

One of the victims of the mayhem, Nnalue Iloegbune, whose building was destroyed by those who invaded the community, said they were living in fear.

He called on both the state and federal governments to come to the aid of the community before things could get out of hand.

Iloegbune recalled that trouble began when one of the leaders in the community wanted to intimidate the people by converting a communal land to his own.

He said it was agreed that the said land would be shared to the seven villages while the remaining portion would be used for the development of the community. The leader was, however, said not to be favourably disposed to the idea, hence he allegedly connived with another top shot in the community to harass and intimidate the people.

The land in question covers about 360.085 hectares. While each village was allotted 900 plots, the said leader was said to have maintained that he would take the remaining 407 plots. The idea was resisted by the people, culminating in the mayhem.

An 81-year-old widow, Madam Agnes Atomba, said the hoodlums had stormed her house at 2: 00 am that Friday and allegedly made away with the sum of N200,000 her children had sent to her for medication.

She said the hoodlums had introduced themselves as policemen and ‘Bakassi boys’, beating up the entire household and destroying the building.

She said: “They came in commando style, broke into my house at 2: 00 am and ordered the entire household to get out. They kept asking about Gilbert, my son, who lives in Lagos.

“I have been sick. The entire money my children sent to me, totalling N200,000, they took everything, destroyed our property and took away other items in the house, not minding my health status and my age.

“I will not curse them because I know that they are from this community, but God will do so for a poor aged widow like me.”

Another hapless resident, Mrs Catherine Ogini, said that church money kept with her totalling more than N200,000 was taken away by the hoodlums, while their building was also destroyed.

She said most of the people in the area are now forced to sleep outside their homes, while the youth, who she said were the main targets, had all run away from the community.

Narrating his ordeal, Christian Iloegbune said the youth were being hunted by the hoodlums, but the former, according to her,  had all relocated to unknown places.

Some red-eyed young men seen inside the palace of the monarch of the community, Igwe Nzekwe Kelly, told our reporter that the traditional ruler had travelled out of town, when we attempted to seek his reaction to the crisis in his domain.

  • ‘Give Buhari another chance’

The National Coordinator of the Buhari Support Organization, Dr Mahmood Abubakar on Friday called on Nigerians to give their supports to the reelection bid of President Mohammadu Buhari, saying things would be better if reelected.
The group chairman, Mahmood said this at the launch of the Southwest branch of the Buhari Support Organization in Ibadan.
According to him, the major problems confronted by the current administration were inherited and commending President Buhari for turning around things in the country.
“If you objectively analyse the state of the nation before the advent of Buhari, you would know the president has achieved a lot. The major problems confronting the state were all inherited. People talk about recession not knowing that our country has been plunged into recession before Buhari came on board. He did all he could and now we are out it. We must understand that nothing comes easy. A house destroyed in hours can’t be built in hours. We must understand that it will take time to get Nigeria to where it ought to” he said.
“this administration has fought the menace of corruption which has made the country a fertile ground for people to come and invest. What we now have is an improved health care, Infrastructure, foreign reserve has increased. What we have now is a better country than we had before”.
Reacting to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku’s promise on restructuring, the BSO chairman described as deceitful the promise to restructure the country in 6 months.
He further assured that the organization would not relent on its effort to get the president reelected come 2019.
The southwest Coordinator of the group Prince Felix Awofisayo said the decision to support the reelection of President Buhari was within the historical current of thought and political action in Yorubaland.

The Southwest coordinator stressed that the region had benefited with the various programmes of the present administration.
“everyone irrespective of their region, religion and circumstances of birth have not been left behind in his programmes. Social intervention programmes such as the home grown school feeding has not only led to increased in school enrollment but also to the development of human capacity development both in the region and the country at large” he said.
“the gains of Buhari’s administration must be protected from the ravages of those who want to scrap them. The presidential election is a contest between the forces of retrogression and those of progress assured the president that members of the southwest BSO were battle ready to deliver the region 100 percent to him”.
Also the River State coordinator, Jerry Johnson likened the era of the PDP at centre with the days of Egypt, stating that Nigerians were not willing to return to that dark era.
He said the South south were solidly behind the reelection of  President Buhari  because of his integrity,
  • Ogun wins national productivity merit award

Ogun State has topped the Productivity Merit Award list, as a result of high priority placed on health sector by Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led administration.

The Merit Award, which was presented by President Mohammadu Buhari to Dr. Somade Taofeek of the State’s Hospitals Management Board in Abuja, was said to have followed due process, where nominees were finally picked from the 36 states of the federation, with Ogun State topping the list.

The Permanent Secretary, Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Adesanya Ayinde, commended the recipient of the award for his dedication and hard work, which he said had paved way for his selection as the most outstanding officer, even as he urged other members of staff of the board to redouble their efforts and commitments to efficient service delivery.

Dr. Ayinde, according to the Press Officer, Ogun State Hospital Management Board, Mrs. Busayo Malaolu, described the National Merit Award as a credit to the present administration’s passion in providing efficient health care service to its citizens, since inception.

Responding, the recipient of the award, who is the Head of General Hospital, Ifo, Dr. Somade Osuolale, appreciated the state government for the opportunity given him to serve the people, which qualified him for nomination and eventual conferment of the award.

While attributing the success to the team work exhibited by the workers at the hospital, he appreciated his subordinates for their supports, saying working as a team pays, especially in the public service.

“You need not be afraid of doing the right thing at the right time. If you are productive, people will listen to you and support what you are doing, which will ultimately help in achieving your goal’’, Somade said.

The recipient noted that the honour would spur him to do more, as ‘’reward for hard work is more work’’.
