  • 2019: I’ll reward hardwork, loyalty this time — Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday assured his supporters that their handwork and loyalty would be adequately rewarded.

Buhari gave the assurance in Abuja while delivering a speech at the inauguration of his support group tagged, “ Together Nigeria’’.

The event was organised by the Buhari Support Organisation.

Buhari, who expressed gratitude to the organisation, said, “some individuals and organisations might be feeling disappointed because we have not been able to please everyone.

“I would like to assure you that this time, handwork and loyalty will be rewarded adequately.’’

According to the President, the event reminds him of the political struggle and support he has been enjoying from the group over the years.

He, therefore, endorsed the plan put in place by the Buhari Support Organisation to reposition the organisation and strategise towards success in the next election and beyond.

“This once again gives me further encouragement, hope and optimism in our political journey,” Buhari said.

While acknowledging the overwhelming nationwide support he has been enjoying over the years, Buhari said his administration was already celebrating the landmark achievements so far recorded.

He expressed gratitude to the group for sensitising Nigerians to the successes recorded by the governing All Progressive Congress (APC).

He also expressed appreciation to the Nigerian celebrities for their contributions to the growth of the country’s entertainment industry as well as projecting the good image of Nigeria abroad.

“I would like to thank our celebrities for projecting the image of Nigeria globally and your contributions to our entertainment industry,’’ he said.

The leaders in attendance include, Gen. Alani Akinrinade (Rtd.), former vice chairman (South West) of the All Progressives Congress. Sola Akinwumi, former Osun State chairman of APC, Elder Adebiyi Adelowo, Prof. Anthony Onipede, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Senator Biyi Durojaye representing Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Chief Akin Fasae representing Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, Prof. Bayo Ademola, Otunba Akin Oluwadere, and Hon. Bayo Aina, noted that the Buhari’s administration has granted autonomy to the judiciary and legislature as well as local government administration.

They said all steps to ensure survival of institutions of government by the current Federal Government are necessary to the attainment of restructuring goal.

The leaders hailed the governors and people of the South West for their abiding commitment to Nigeria and efforts for restructuring.

In a communique signed by Senator Ayo Fasanmi, among other leaders after the meeting, they advised Nigerians to stand by Buhari and return him to office in 2019 for the next generation to be empowered and enjoin the gains of the fight against corruption.

The leaders said support for Buhari will create an opportunity for the next generation to be strengthened and to be able to chart a prosperous course for Nigeria from 2019 and beyond.

The leaders also said the summit of the Yoruba people holding in Ibadan, Oyo State capital on January 2019 will address strategy to protect interest of the South West geo-political zone ahead of 2019 general elections.

They said the summit would further address issues and plans to ensure victory for the All Progressives Congress which the leaders said will guarantee lives in abundance for Yoruba people and Nigerians.

  • PDP to Buhari: Stop shielding corrupt relatives

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to demonstrate his much touted integrity by allowing an open investigation of his associates and close relatives, who were mentioned in alleged looting of public resources.

The opposition party accused Presidency officials of concealing malpractices by the President’s relatives with the recent attempts by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) to gag a suspect who claimed to have engaged in illegal transactions with one Mariatu, a sister to the First Lady.

One Amina Mohammed, who was paraded by the DSS about two weeks ago, had also mentioned name of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. David Babachir Lawal as a beneficiary of the alleged illegal deals.

“Having reviewed all these issues, including the lame denials by those mentioned by the suspect, as well as the failure of the security agency to allow the suspect to complete her open confession, the PDP challenges President Buhari to order an open hearing into the matter, if, indeed, the Presidency has nothing to hide”, a the statement by PDP spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan said.

The party also challenged President Buhari to immediately make public the report of the investigation of the former aide of the First Lady, Mr. Baba-Inna, who was arrested in September this year, over accusations of receiving N2.5 billion as donations from politicians, businessmen and women on behalf of the First Lady, Aisha Buhari.

The statement continued, “Our party holds that President Buhari cannot be parading himself as Mr. Integrity while condoning acts of corruption by his associates and close relatives as well as a cabal in his presidency, which the First Lady had even alluded to, if he is not directly benefiting from those sleazes

“The PDP also dares President Buhari to make public the official report allegedly indicting his Presidency on the siphoning of over N11 trillion in the petroleum sector, including the N9 trillion oil sleaze detailed in the leaked memo at the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

“Furthermore, the Buhari Presidency should allow an open inquest into the alleged diversion of defence funds, including part of the $1 billion drawn from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) for purchase of military hardware and welfare of our soldiers, to fund his ill-fated re-election campaign.

“The PDP also challenges President Buhari to make public the report of the looting of over N33 billion meant for the purchase of food for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) as well as another N18 billion IDP fund, discovered by the Senate, to have been diverted to APC interests.

“It is unfortunate that President Buhari has allowed the festering of sundry racketeering and abuse of fiscal process in his presidency, a situation, which casts a long shadow on his acclaimed integrity as a leader.

“Unless President Buhari allows an open inquest on his associates and close relatives involved in alleged treasury looting, he lacks all moral standing to seek re-election by Nigerians, who have been bearing the brunt of his misrule in the last three and half years”.

  • Poverty alleviation versus 2019

The President Muhammadu Buhari administration last week Wednesday introduced a new measure aimed at alleviating the sufferings of Nigerians, especially students and their parents.

It announced a reduction in the examination registration fees for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and National Examination Council (NECO) examinations for Senior Secondary and Basic Education Certificate Examination from January 2019.

After the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, also claimed that the reductions were not specifically aimed at garnering more votes for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general elections, despite starting it a month to the elections.

According to him, it is part of government’s plans to alleviate the poverty of Nigerians especially as the agencies were not revenue generating bodies.

To buttress his points, he even pointed out that the past high examination fees were unnecessary as they were mostly siphoned into private pockets.

He said, “Since the new administration came into office and a change in management and prudent management by JAMB, we have been able to see that most of what have been charged doesn’t have to be because a lot of it have been siphoned by corrupt officials.

“So, in answer to yearnings by parents, Mr. President directed that we should look into the possibility of reducing the charges.

“So accordingly, from January 2019, JAMB fees will be from N5,000 to N3,500 for the UTME, Senior Secondary Certificate charged by National Examination Council (NECO) from 11,350 to N9,850 and Basic Education Certificate handled by NECO is reduced from N5,500 to N4,000.”

While some Nigerians have hailed the Federal Government for the reduction, others have criticised it as being too insignificant.

Those in support of the new measure went further to call on all state governors to urgently cut the cost of education in their states and improve access to quality education for children from poor and disadvantaged background.

But those against the reductions argued that the reductions may not have the desired impact as they were not even up to 50% reduction from the original prices.

They also faulted the timing of the reduction in prices, stressing that they have everything to do with the coming general elections.

Also of recent, the Buhari’s administration newly introduced TraderMoni was seen by critics as moves by the ruling party to get more support and votes in the 2019 general elections.

But speaking on why the government is focusing on the welfare of the common man through TraderMoni and other programmes, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo last week Tuesday in Jigawa State, said, “Mr President’s sole concern is that the resources of our country must be used for the man and woman who need it the most, the people in our society who are working hard, the

farmers, the traders, and all of the young people who need jobs, that is the focus of Mr. President’s entire economic policy.

“It is on giving the common man hope so that they can live decent lives, they can provide shelter for themselves, feed and live well.

“If the money of our people was not stolen, there would be enough for us to do what we want to do, the money that we make as a country must not be stolen by a few people.

“Under the Trader Moni Scheme, we are giving 2million people across Nigeria, N10,000 collateral-free loans with the possibility of increasing the amount within six months.

“Here in Jigawa, we have given 30,000 petty traders and only today, we gave extra 2,000 to 5,000 traders, and all together, we have given about 35,000 people the loans in Jigawa alone.

“We also have the Market Moni scheme which is another initiative for traders that are bigger than the petty traders and we start from N50,000 to N350,000.

“This is the state where we have given the largest number of people, we have given 37,000 beneficiaries in this state, and every month these people receive the transfers.”

“Under the School feeding programme, 434,000 children are being fed every day as 4000 cooks have been engaged to prepare the meals while 14,368 graduates have been engaged under the N-Power job creation scheme.

“The Jigawa State Government is supporting all of the Federal Government programmes, it has given out motorcycles to those supervising the various programmes, it has also given them 100 android phones,” he added.

Not done with its people-oriented programmes, the Buhari’s administration again last Saturday announced that it will soon compensate farmers and fishermen in the country, who were adversely affected by flooding which resulted from heavy rainfall during the year.

In a message to Farmers’ Day 2018 held on Saturday at Yenagoa, capital of Bayelsa State, and organized by Nigeria AGIP Oil Company for farmers in Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Imo States, the President stated “Two weeks ago, the National Food Security Council met and we approved a compensation package for all flood impacted farmers and fishermen.

“I want to assure all flood affected farmers and fishermen that you will be helped.

“This government is with you in your time of need. As I speak to you now,  the modalities for this compensation programme are being finalized and very soon, we shall start implementation,” he said.

Recognising youths’ important roles in agricultural development as bedrock of the economy, the President added “Our future economic prosperity hinges to a large extent on how we modernize and expand our agriculture.

“Youths account for some 62% of our population. This group, full of energy and drive, are the catalyst that will steer Nigeria in the direction that will make us realize our full potential.

“For many years, our God-given resources have been abandoned, under-utilized or mismanaged. This is very apparent in the field of agriculture. In the past three years, we aggressively pushed the agricultural agenda with special emphasis on youth empowerment.

“Across many value chains, we are supporting meaningful projects in partnership with private sector players. This is the only way Nigeria can feed itself in a sustainable manner.

“We are working very hard to enable the youths actively participate in this agricultural revolution, and I take this opportunity to congratulate you all on responding positively to this call.

“Floods are a natural phenomenon that man cannot control. I want to appeal

to you all not to be dispirited, but to rise to the challenges,” he said.

While all these goodies are expected by a majority of Nigerians to materialise soon, there are also claims in some quarters that the government is also planning to crash the pump price of petrol in the country.

Bringing down the price significantly until the proposed refineries become operational, whether for political reasons or otherwise, will really go a long way to ameliorate the sufferings of Nigerians.

This is because many businesses’ costs have skyrocketed with the increased of pump price of petrol to maximum ceiling of N145 per litre, among other factors.

But it is really hoped that all these poverty alleviation measures and those to come later will live beyond the 2019 general elections.

The welfare of Nigerians, at all times, should always be the ultimate aim of any government.

  • Buhari inaugurates panel to check drug, substance abuse

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday inaugurated two-tier Presidential Intervention Structure on the Elimination of Drug and Substance Abuse.

He also called for collective action to help those enslaved by drugs in order to build a new life.

The President inaugurated members of the Presidential Intervention Structure of the Ministerial Committee and Presidential Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Drug Abuse at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to him, the challenges associated with drug abuse have grown to become a major public health problem in the country.

Nigeria, which was considered as a transit nation for illicit drugs before 2013, he noted had now been internationally recognized as a user nation.

He recalled the worrisome statistics of several reports including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency which revealed that about three million codeine syrups bottles were consumed daily in Kano and twice that amount in the North-West region of Nigeria alone.

He said “This is a situation of emergency and we must face and address it as such,’’

He also pointed out that the use and abuse of drugs by adolescents have become one of the most disturbing health related phenomena in Nigeria and other parts of the world.

“Many schools going adolescents experience mental health issues, either temporarily or for a long period of time. Some become insane, cannot remain in schools and eventually drop out.

“Drug and alcohol abuse are also major occupational hazards among Nigerian workers, professionals, notably drivers, which contribute to making Nigerian roads particularly dangerous. The drugs that are commonly abused include but not limited to alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine, Tramadol, codeine, etc.

“Today marks the beginning of another milestone in correcting the root cause of some of the ills of today’s society in order to safeguard our common existence and guarantee a brighter future for our current generation and those yet on born.

“The role is specifically targeted at decimating the disastrous havoc that drug abuse could cause on the very fabric of our society,’’ he said.

He commended his wife for demonstrating passion and commitment to the cause by galvanizing the participation of First Ladies from the states through the Governors’ Wives Forum in conducting an assessment of the challenge in their respective domains, with the view to proffering measures to combat the menace.

“The appointment of the Wives of the President and the Vice-President as well as the Chairpersons of the North and South Governors’ Wives Forum as members of this committee is in recognition of their concerted efforts to the course of eradicating the menace of drug abuse from our society.

“Additionally, the participation of the First Ladies is meant to spur further involvement of women and mothers in particular, in view of the significant role they play in parenting and care.

“It is therefore expected that Governors’ Wives across the federation will take the lead in replicating this intervention structure at the states and local government levels,’’ he said.

The presidential structure at the federal level, he said, would facilitate implementation of government’s programmes and projects for effective delivery of policies, while a third level structure was proposed for the States, given the national spread of the malaise and the need for quick action at the root of the scourge.

The President revealed that the State Implementation Committee (SIC) would be established in all states of the federation to complement federal government’s efforts nationwide.

He said the High-Level Ministerial Steering Committee would be chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation while the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Drug Abuse would be chaired by retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa.

Members of the Presidential Advisory Committee include Wives of the President and the Vice-President, representatives of Governors’ Wives Forum (North and South), Nigeria Custom Service, NAFDAC, NDLEA, Police and others.

The ministerial steering is charged with the responsibilities of integrating drug abuse issue into extant government policies and new initiatives and provides strategic direction and guidance on drug issues.

It is also to serve as a linkage between the federal government and other entities; synchronize and translate government policies into implementation plan and promote necessary executive/legislative actions.

In his remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha described drug abuse epidemic as “a national emergency that calls for concerted and collaborative actions by all tiers of government, Non-Governmental Organisations, Development Partners, Civil Society Organisations and religious and traditional leaders.’’

He warned that the menace if not tackled expeditiously and firmly, it would in the long term, be more dangerous than any other challenges facing the nation, including the insurgency.

“We are now faced with a situation where multiple generations of the same family have become victims,’’ he noted.

  • PDP: In character and integrity, Buhari is no match for Atiku

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organization (PPCO) has replied the All Progressives Congress (APC) stating that President Muhammadu Buhari isn’t a match for its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in character, integrity, competence and public acceptance.

The PPCO noted that the APC, in raising the issue of personal character of candidates in its statement, has unwittingly sunk President Buhari’s campaign by opening a flank that ultimately exposes him to public opprobrium.

A statement Monday by the spokesman for the PDP campaign, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the PDP is committed to issue-based campaign and finding solutions to the myriad of problems the “incompetent, divisive and extremely corrupt” Buhari administration has plunged the nation into.

However, the party maintained that it would not hesitate to take on the APC, any time, any day on issues of personal character and integrity, which it said; President Buhari was in clear deficit before Atiku Abubakar.

The statement said, “It is on record that nothing incriminatory has ever been found on Atiku Abubakar, despite being the most investigated politician in our country, particularly by the Buhari Presidency; but can such be said of President Buhari, who has been jittery over Atiku Abubakar’s soaring popularity and acceptance across the board, ahead of the 2019 general election.

“In the interim, between President Buhari and Atiku Abubakar, Nigerians know the leader, who is bugged by integrity issues and under whose watch our Presidency became “fantastically corrupt”, with issues of certificate forgery and allegations of sundry frauds in which family members and close relatives are being mentioned.

“Nigerians are aware of the leader under whose direct watch, over N11 trillion has been stolen from our petroleum sector and billons of naira frittered away from our National Health Insurance Fund (NHIS) and other revenue agencies in the last three and half years.

“They are aware of the leader, who has reneged in all his campaign promises; who stays aloof always to the plights of the people and only parades as pro-poor, just to win their votes.

“On the issue of achievement, the whole world knows the Nigerian leader whose corrupt administration plunged our nation into economic recession and who cannot point to any development project he initiated and completed in any part of the country or any personal contribution he has made to the development of our nation, either in office or as a private citizen.

“Since the APC has raised the issue of character, it should be ready to face the debate when the heat is on”.

  • Secondus alleges plots to arrest Atiku, Obi, Saraki, Dogara

The national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus has raised the alarm, alleging plots by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest some key leaders of the opposition party on trump up charges.

Secondus listed the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar; his running mate, Peter Obi; President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and other leaders of the party as some of those marked for arrest.

In a statement issued on Monday by Secondus media aide, Ike Abonyi, the party chairman warned that the country would explode any moment if the EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Magu continued with such impunity.

Alleging plots to prefer frame up charges against the PDP chieftains, the main opposition party chairman further warned that the country is presently sitting on a gunpowder.

Prince Secondus further cautioned the EFCC chairman, saying that he won’t get away with the hatchet job he has taken upon himself by using instruments of state to harass and intimidate opposition figures.

Regretting that Magu has made himself a willing tool for oppression, Secondus said available intelligence indicated that the EFCC chairman was working in cahoots with some prominent chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“They are presiding over clandestine meetings and developing strategies for the APC, which is aimed at caging and crushing critical leaders of the opposition”, Secondus said.

The party chairman said aside arrest and detention of the targeted opposition leaders, their family members and business associates have also been lined up for intimidation and harassment, including freezing their business interests and their bank accounts.

He described as an afterthought fabrication, the EFCC’s statement that the two sons of Atiku, whose residence was raided by operatives on the Commission on Saturday, were not the target of the raid.

Prince Secondus recalled the security search on Atiku on November 11, when he arrived in the country from Dubai, saying the country has gone into full blown dictatorship.

“After that embarrassment and harassment which was aimed at intimidating the candidate and nothing incriminating was found on him, no apology was extended to him as a former number two citizen.

“They followed it up with the freezing of the bank accounts of our vice presidential candidate as well as that of his friends and family members as part of a large scheme to keep the party distracted from its focus of regaining power in 2019”, the statement added.

The PDP chairman said the script being played by the ruling party was meant to bring key opposition leaders to their knees, with a view to grounding them, framing them up and putting them behind bars before the 2019 elections.

He called on all lovers of democracy and rule of law, especially the international community to rein in President Muhammadu Buhari, Magu and the APC to observe the tenets of democracy that respect the sanctity of the opposition and human rights.

  • ‘Nigeria still very corrupt despite Buhari’s anti-corruption war’

Despite the anti-corruption posture of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, Nigeria is still perceived as an extremely corrupt country, the Uyo Zonal Head of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Abdulkarim Chukkul has said.

Chukkul, who made this known Monday at the commission’s office during a press briefing in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, said the 2017 corruption perception index scored the country low when compared with the 2016 perception report.

Read Also:Vote buying a threat to Nigeria’s democracy – Saraki, Dogara

“Despite the frantic efforts by the government to tackle corruption, the 2017 corruption perception scored Nigeria low compare with the 2016 perception report. Nigeria slipped in the country-ranking by 12 position in 2017, which shows that Nigeria is still perceived as
    extremely corrupt “, he said.

He expressed frustration over the National Assembly’s refusal to pass into law some major bills presented to it by the agency, saying that the situation has stifled the commission’s mandate of tackling corruption.

“Beneficial ownership register is nowhere near completion and crucial asset recovery legislation such as the proceeds of Crime Bill has been stalled in the National Assembly.

“The pledge to work towards full implementation of the Open Contracting Data Standard has not resulted in tangible actions and the much needed public procurement reform is stalled as key appointments for National Procurement Council (NPC) have not commenced, ” he said.

Chukkul said that, at the state level, lack of procurement law has resulted in shady contracting leading to non-implementation of projects and outright abandoning of even the ones initiated, he also said that the increasing level of abandon projects across Nigeria has made the citizens not to benefit from the trillions of naira budgeted yearly for development.

“According to the findings of our monitoring activities, 70 percent of government projects are abandoned. This is the evident as the number of abandoned projects scattering across the state. The increasing level of abandon projects across Nigeria has deprived the citizens the benefit of the trillions of naira budgeted yearly for development

“While the citizens are deprived the benefit of governance, some few persons who are politically exposed see the opportunity of budget implementation to drain the nation of its resources,” he added.

  • The wonder called Jubril al-Sudani

The ‘Cabal’ in Aso Rock don’t always get the credit they deserve. We say the most uncomplimentary things about them when, actually, the guys are geniuses. Over the Jubril Aminu al-Sudani saga, they have gone and outdone themselves.

Now the whole world is talking about us and comedians on late night American TV shows are making jokes about President Muhammadu Buhari.

Just think of the breath-taking conception of the Jubril project and the flawless execution. It is unbelievable that Nigerians, long derided as serial bunglers, could have pulled this off.

God works in mysterious ways but to have created a Jubril who has Buhari’s almost exact physical attributes – such that he can pass for the president without raising curiosity – must be the 8th wonder of the world.

When I contemplate how many months the Sudanese impostor has been embedded in the Presidential Villa, I break out in cold sweat at night.

But what I find most impressive is how the Cabal managed to track down this doppelganger in some dark corner of Africa, ready and willing to be pressed into service in Nigeria without much ado. This surely rates as the 9th wonder.

Credit for that must go to Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu for providing the intelligence. Never mind that not too long ago he was calling leading lights of the Cabal zoo keepers. In the dark, shadowy world of espionage anything can happen: even bitter foes can swap information when conditions permit.

Remember that shortly before vanishing form these shores Kanu constituted the Biafran Intelligence Services or something in that general direction. With such resources and far-flung network it would have been a piece of cake scooping the CIA, KGB, MOSSAD, SSS, NIA, MI6 and media – Western and local – to what was, until he blew it open, the world’s best kept secret.

Truly, Jubril is a wonder who deserves an Oscar for his amazing acting skills. He managed in a matter of months to perfectly replicate Buhari’s mannerisms, idiosyncrasies and speech patterns, developed over 75 years without anyone being the wiser.

Imagine, he successfully fooled members of the Federal Executive Council who regularly interact with him and even sometimes travel overseas with him. He managed to pull wool over the eyes of the likes of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, APC national chairman Adams Oshiomhole, governors and the like.

Aside Osinbajo, I accept he could have beguiled these other gentlemen because of their irregular interaction with the president. What I find incredible is that Governors Ibikunle Amosun and Rochas Okorocha fell for his tricks! Given that they virtually moved into Aso Rock in pursuit of lost gubernatorial tickets, you would think they would have noticed something fishy.

Come to think of it, the real Buhari would have simply ordered Oshiomhole to hand the APC tickets to the governors’ chosen ones – given how close they are to him. Only a Sudanese could have been so obdurate, as to be taking orders from a mere party chairman. So, if you needed further evidence that there’s more to this Jubril business than meets the eye, this is it.

Jubril and the Cabal are a wonder to have successfully procured the cooperation of First Lady Aisha Buhari – a noted straight talker who shoots from the hip and would not have any truck with monkey business.

Someone who just nearly outed two unnamed powerful men who have grounded her husband’s administration, is not the sort of figure to casually acquiesce in such a grand conspiracy without turning whistle-blower. To have secured her silence is the 10th wonder of the world.

Let’s not forget that Aisha and the Cabal have not always been the best of pals. Her outburst against them back in the day, forced Buhari to openly assure the international community that her influence was limited to the “other room.” But then in power circles there are no permanent friends or foes, only permanent or common interests.

Jubril and the Cabal are a wonder because in their rush to install the usurper, they forgot to put in place an exit strategy. Would the man retire to farm life in Daura or would he be shipped back to the Sudan in a crate in 2023 when Buhari’s second term – assuming he wins in 2019 – expires?

We’ve only been given sketchy outlines of the complicated deal that would keep Jubril in power, presiding over our commonwealth ad infinitum. The only way that would happen is by passing a constitutional amendment that takes away the executive’s two-term limit.

For this to work, Senate President Bukola Saraki, would have to be co-opted. But I doubt that the man, still embittered at his treatment in APC, would play ball. The sheer prospect of another four years of Buhari, or of Jubril carrying on his policies, would surely have the Kwara strongman grinding his teeth in rage. That would leave the Jubril project in grave danger of implosion. Surely, the Cabal wouldn’t want that.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. There’s still the little matter of 2019 and how the outing of the impostor from the Horn of Africa could affect the outcome of the polls.

An influential church leader has already preached an explosive sermon on the matter demanding answers. It didn’t matter that Buhari had just told Nigerians in Poland that he was not a clone: it was really him in flesh and blood.

Rather than douse the fire, the president’s use of the word ‘clone’ inflamed things. The suspicious insist they never raised cloning but talked about an impostor who is in situ in the seat of power running things. All talk of cloning was simply a clever attempt to muddy the waters!

On social media, diehard believers in the legend of Jubril would have none of the president’s explanations. As one post sagely put it: what do you expect him to say? Did you really think he would admit to being the Sudanese mystery man?

After digesting the comments, it suddenly dawned on me why over 40 million Nigerians have mental disorders according to the Federal Ministry of Health. But the more this saga rumbles on, the more I am convinced that even this figure is a grievous undercount.

As for the PDP, it has not come out to say it believes its presidential candidate would be running against a foreign impostor. I suspect that at the right moment it would raise the grave constitutional implications of the matter and call on INEC to declare force majeure.

What they have said, however, is that the Jubril saga would not have arisen had there been greater openness at a time Buhari was hospitalised in London for over 100 days. Flowing from that, the president is being bashed over the head for making Nigeria the butt of jokes internationally.

But let me respectfully disagree. Even if there was livestreaming of Buhari’s 100 days in London, people would still believe what they want. And that is not unique to Nigeria.

America has one of the highest literacy rates in the world but despite their supposed enlightenment, the cancer of racism caused the Birther Movement to thrive for much of Barack Obama’s presidency. One of the key promoters of the suggestion that the US’ first black president might be a foreigner born in Kenya or Indonesia, is the incumbent Donald Trump.

Even after the official birth certificate showing that Obama was born in Hawaii surfaced, many chose not to believe. Instead, another round of conspiracy theories flared with many carefully scrutinising the document to point out supposed flaws suggesting it was faked.

As far as 2019 is concerned, I would say that Buhari might just be the luckiest man in politics. Given the state of the economy you would expect his foes to focus on that and the security challenges in different parts of the country to embarrass him.

Instead, those who say they want to conduct issue-based campaigns are allowing themselves to get sucked into celebrating the Yusuf story in the vain hope that it would somehow hurt the incumbent and the ruling party.

Unfortunately for them, outlandish stories never toppled anybody in these parts. In the late 80s the activist Tai Solarin got himself into trouble by lending his distinguished voice to the rumour that a certain $2.8billion oil proceeds had evaporated from the federation account. The story was part of the fuel that fired up the SAP riots at the time.

After he was grilled by a panel of inquiry as to the source of this weighty allegation, he said he picked it up from Ebony magazine. Sadly, there was nothing of the sort ever published by the paper. He equally said he heard it in the Molue bus! The Ibrahim Babangida regime ruled for several years thereafter, while a respected and honourable man was ridiculed and humiliated.

The opposition can continue offering Nigerians comic relief by giving life to the Yusuf tale by moonlight. But they may wake up on Election Day to discover that they have wasted time chasing shadows and have not offered the electorate a reason to oust the incumbent.

On the other hand, they could get back to the serious business of discussing the challenges facing our people and make this a competitive race.

The choice is theirs. They may be presently enjoying the jokes of American comedians Jimmy Kimmel and Trevor Noah, but what matters is who laughs last come February.
